I started grass skiing with Horst Locher in 1976 at Bryce Mountain Resort in Virginia which is the home of Grass Skiing in America. We had shirts then that said Ski Your Grass Off at Bryce Mountain Resort. We lubricated the rollers back then with automatic transmission fluid and oil. It made them roll faster. We then cleaned them at the end if the day with palmolive dish soap and a hose sprayer. Helped me carve my turns.
Late last June I skied the "No Trespassing" grass slope at Pepperdine College in Malibu. Great weather and an ocean view. Early July I skied at Presidio Park in San Diego, it was a bit hot. Last Sunday I skied at Emigrant Lake in Ashland Oregon and it was hotter than it should be. There's not enough snow here for our Mt. Ashland ski park to open. Grass skiers are the only skiers in So.OR right now. I have 5 pairs and have introduced 8-9 locals to the sport so far. -We kinda gotta little grass ski thing go'n on! It just adds to the excellent mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, snow sports, disc golf, etc, we do here. Roll on everyone...
When I first saw this clip I surprised by the music. The audio for this segment has been re-recorded. The original "Ski Country" version had different music and a reference to one of the skiers looking like "Fonzie" from Happy Days. BTW, Warren got it wrong... it's Brian McKay, Keith McCarthy, and Greg Vlahikis. Scott and Edgar ended up on the editing room floor.
30+ years after starting, I still grass ski. Hiking up the hills and then blazing down difficult slopes is totally exhilarating... it's scary intense samurai fun. Skiing through slalom gates on mowed grass is a whole different thing. Watch the guy in red with black shorts run the course. Put snow where there's grass and tell me he's not totally killing it. We use to race in Presidio Park in San Diego California in the early 80's. We had a race at a small grass ski park up in Vallejo one year as well. And howsabout that tree covered hill? Don't tell me that's not extreme! Awesome footage, steeper that it looks. Hiking up, and then launching yourself down ungroomed-no-soft-snow hills, isn't for the weak!
I can't believe anyone could be negative about Grass Skiing. I'm thinking those who are, couldn't launch themselves down these un-groomed grassy slopes that are steeper than the vids show, at speeds higher than you think. It's WAY harder than it looks and can be unforgiving if you get it wrong. It's not a poor alternative to snow skiing, it's it's own thing. If you look up at a green hill and think it would be fun to ski it... well... we do it. And, BTW, it was just another thing that we did. We lived close enough to Lake Tahoe to do snow skiing day-trips, we raced moto-cross in the late 70's, we were on the forefront of BMX and mountain biking, plus Ultimate Frisbee, were into karate... and more... how about you haters? Ever do anything of note? Have I seen you in a Warren Miller movie?
Now take any major wipeout done while skiing and put it in this context with no soft snow to fall into... well I guess that's one way to thin the herd. Keep on skiing awesome 80's bros!
I used to be in this scene big time at HILLEND, Edinburgh..... Was a hellva dangerous... lol... but loved it... They eventually stopped it as there were just too many accidents!!
@@anthony3295 Well... actually.. untrue..and only if your not savvy on your avalanche safety.... But I can assure you, Grass Skiing was banned at Hillend after 1 year because of the accidents... I've skied since the age of 5... and for most of my adult years off piste (it's all I do nowadays, no lifts!) but I've only ever been in 1 avalanche.. and that was when I was young and stoopid!! Butby crikey, I bloody hurt every bone in my body whilst grassskiing at Hillend!!! lol
uh huh???!! It's so cool to find ski-able slopes, push thru the barbed-wire fences, hike up, and then ski down. We had 1,500+(?) runs above Milpitas and Fremont in the Nor Cal So.Bay. At least once I parked my car on 280 in Los Altos Hills, with the hood up and a note on the windshield about being out of gas, so I could ski a slope that I had driven by many times.
This may seem like the most Old School Thing you have ever seen but know this, there are still quite a few of us Aces out there on your local Hills. If you see us? Flag us down and engage us in light conversation, we're a Friendly People! But don't stay for too long, we're also a Lonely People. Ciao.
There's a Line Traveling Circus episode where they rent these things. You should check out their channel, if I re-watch a few sometime later (sooo committed ;) ), I'll let you know.
i'd buy if they were always accompanied by this soundtrack
The retro soundtrack while displaying the quirks, skill, and charm of a niche sport pastime is what makes this video Wonderful.
Was actually watching some retro porn last night with similar soundtrack lol

That is the most 80's thing I've seen.

Those are amazing skiers! Skiing down-hill around trees with no snow to break your fall! Good for you! ❤️❤️❤️

It’d be safer than skiing I’d have thought (with protection). No avalanches to worry about..
