Some bowlers have asked me about the mental game. I have mentioned only a touch of the mental game in this presentation. An excellent example of introduction to the mental game can be described in the movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance" with Will Smith and Matt Damon. This movie reminds me of when I crossed with Don Johnson, PBA and USBC Hall of Famer, on the PBA tour. Don would be talking with the audience on any subject they wished, until it was his turn to bowl. When Don got onto the approach, you could see him shutting things down before his delivery. After his delivery, he would return to the audience and continue their discussion as if nothing had happened. What an amazing Hall of Fame bowler.
I struggled for a while after joining my first senior league with my focus. My eyes would drift from my target when bowlers would enter my line of sight. I would let my mind wander about other things instead of the task at hand. I finally realized that if I would remember that I only had to concentrate for 2 to 3 seconds, just 12 feet of approach and look only at my intended target, I would do much better. I took my average from 180 to 210 in a few weeks.
@Dobry Dool I have never tried Piylivern Remarkable Predominance. I guess I'm old fashion and believe hard work in sports for earned merits. I have never taken any drugs; and want to learn and remember each hurdle and/or obstacle to my accomplishments. There are many types of "strikes," the perfect 1-2 and 1-3 pocket hits, Brooklyn hits, straight hits, high hits, low hits, back-up ball hits, direct-on headpin hits and even headpin less hits. Gutter ball hits are not considered strikes because it is declared a dead ball when entering the gutter. Double hooking ball motion strikes are spectacular to witness.
Absolute Gold, Mr. Wong! 🏅 After all these years, I keep finding myself rewatching this video to reinforce fundamentals. I hope you realize how many bowlers you’ve helped out (and how much we appreciate you)!! 🙏🏼
Really an excellent video. I’ve been bowling for years and yet still learned so much. Already I’ve watched it twice. Mr Wong you are very knowledgeable and very generous to share that knowledge.
Thank you for your kind compliments. Its techniques are used on the National PBA tour. I'm glad you are learning something from it and please forward it to your family, friends and other bowlers.
Excellent video...very informative...especially the oil patterns and the minus 31 formula. Nice to see a presentation thats well researched and executed. Thanks a ton.
I’ve been trying to look for vids like this since I just went to a center where there is no range finder. I was so lost and kept looking everywhere. Thank you for this since I would try it next week.
RAY!!!!!!!! This is probably about the 6th time I've reviewed your video. Since I first came across it a couple months ago until now my average came up 17 pins. I just bowl my first 700 series 2 weeks ago and that was right after I watched your video. I cant remember everything but I will pick 2 things to focus on and this has helped me. I will be keeping this one video on my Play List to watch over and over. You covered sooooo much and its VERY Helpful stuff Brudda!!! Blessing~Rudy
WOW!!! Fantastic! I wish I could take credit for your accomplishment, but cannot. You did it all by yourself and you EARNED the recognition. Congrats. Please share the video with your friends and other bowlers. Hopefully, it could help them too.
I shall give the spare shooting as you have presented a try, I have struggled of late with my spares, especially with my left side shots. great video, thank you.
Are you drifting in or out toward the foul line? Are you using a spare or striking ball? Are you missing all pins? There are many approaches as to aligning for spares. Have you tried the 3-6-9 system? My video does not go into detail because bowlers have individual applications to the game. It may be time to approach a qualified bowling instructor/coach to observe and fine tune your game. I had many coaches in my tenure. I was fortunate to have the legendary John Jowdy analyze my game during my rookie year on tour. USBC has trained and certified many excellent coaches today.
I am really out of practice and have not been able to lock in on my spare shooting since I got back into the game. It is hard for me to visualize a proper line. I have been throwing cross lane even for pins on left. Even with my plastic ball I get unpredictable results when crossing over the oil pattern. I seen a pro pick up the 4 pin by staying left and just about throwing straight down the boards. I may try staying left on my left side spares and see if by crossing less boards will give me some accuracy. I do not know if it be best to use a much lighter spare ball for better control.
To build some accuracy, let's take a closer target, like the arrows. Let's try to knock down a pin away from the gutters, like the 5-pin. The object is to hit just that one pin. Let's assume you're a right handed bowler and your practice target is between the 5 and 10 boards, first and second arrows. Between two arrows is a much larger target than trying to hit only that second arrow or 10-board. Hitting one board is very difficult. It's OK to hit those arrows because the 5 to 10 boards are 6 inclusive boards or a 6-inch target at 15 feet. The object is to roll the ball between the first and second arrows 10 out of 10 consecutive times. Then move your target to the second and third arrows. After 10 out of 10 times, move to the third and fourth arrows for another 10 out of 10 times. Move to the other areas and practice with the 4-pin and 6-pin in the same manner. I call this single-pin practice for accuracy, no full racks. Do this routine for a week and I'm sure will start narrowing that target to 4 boards, between the arrows or a 4-inch target. When you reach that 2-inch target, you'll be approaching the Pro ranks. The Pros average within 1-1/2 boards accuracy at 15-feet. Good luck and have fun.
@@wrongway9664 By the way, I forgot to mention that when you reach that 2-board accuracy, start practicing between the gutter and the first arrow. Also, when practicing for that 4-pin, target the areas between the 4th and 5th arrows, the 5th and 6th arrows and then the 6th and 7th arrows. I'm sure by practicing difficult tasks and not always at the strike pocket, you'll become more accurate for spares and strikes will come. This is what I call some parts of AREA targeting. Good luck and have fun.
Great job on the video Ray. I'll be using this as I work with my students and the bowling club I belong to. This video provides a lot of talking points to have in-depth discussions with students. Thanks Ray.
Dove Bar This is exactly what the video was meant to be, in-depth discussions between students and coaches/instructors. There are so many variables and approaches to this game. What amazes me is to watch the blind using the rails to deliver the ball, little kids using the ramps and the physical handicap using wheel chairs or even a walking cane. They are the true bowlers, overtaking difficult obstacles. If the video presentation helps one person acknowledge one thing, I have accomplished my objective. There are many excellent coaches and you seem to fill that shoe in openly discussing different points with your students. Keep up the good work.
Dove Bar - Here's something you can talk about with your discussion group on Ball Motion. The bowling ball can hook more than once during its travel down the lane. I have done it several times when playing on the "wall" or edge of the oil. The ball will slide when in the oil and hook in the dry area, then repeats itself when going back into that oil again. It happens so fast that it can be seen only on that delivery by the person delivering the ball, but that ball will hook twice before hitting the pins. The first time I did it, my bowling buddies told me to empty my pockets so they can count the amount of marbles I had. It is a rare occasion but can and will happen again.
Welcome back. Please call me Ray. We're all in this together, us verses the pins. Any way this video can encourage anyone is a step forward. Please share this video with others and have fun. Mahalo. Ray
Brilliant. I almost never miss my spares now after this instructions video. watch this before every tournament. my avg. has gone from 196 to 212. Thank you
I feel very fortunate to able to present bowling awareness information to bowlers from what I had gathered from my National PBA tour and coaching adventures. Each bowler has their own style and must understand what is out there and be able to communicate with a qualified coach for guidance. Thank you for your comments.
In a word: OUTSTANDING! This really IS a fine presentation that can help just about any bowler. Ray, I was a PBA member back in the 80s (for just 6 years) and totally retired from bowling in 1991. This past Spring, my wife convinced me to try to make a comeback. However, it's been 28 years that I was away from the game, and a lot has changed! I'm now 70 years old. Will I carry a 200+ average again? Probably not. However, if I can shoot a steady 180-190 average, that will be satisfactory. We will be taking a vacation in Hawaii next July, and I hope to meet with you and shake your hand. We are not sure of our itinerary yet, but will be cruising on Pride of America. It will be my wife's 2nd trip to your state, and my first. One inquiry: Do you have a facebook page?
Thanks for your compliments. I'm always happy to help bowlers in the game. Many bowlers of our generation are gone like Earl Anthony, Dick Weber and Don Johnson to name a few. The tour can be strenuous for a 70-year senior to compete with athletes/competitors 20 years younger. I suffered micro trauma in my back on my 8th tour year which made me lay off from all athletic activities for three years. Scoring 180-190 is not enough to be competitive on tour. I'm sorry to admit that I no longer live in Hawaii nor involved with Facebook. I currently manage a senior activity that attracts over 150 bowlers per week and promotes bowling as a competitive exercise with retirement independence to complement their fixed income budget.
Hi Mr. Wong. Wow, it's been 5 years. Maybe time to make a new video. Many young bowlers today, boys and girls, are throwing with 2 handed swings. Belmo helped make this style truly popular. My kid is one and has been very successful with it. There aren't many videos on this style and in my small opinion, this is the future for successful bowling.
This video was constructed for the bowler to be aware of what's on a bowling lane, not one's bowling style, for students and instructors to communicate at an understanding level. Two-handed bowling does not eliminate all odds on the lane. A two-handed bowler should seek an instructor/coach who understands, and studies two-handed bowling as compared to a bowler on a wheelchair or a blind bowler using rails. During my competition days, some tournaments would oil in the early morning and we competed throughout the day to midnight. When we returned, that evening, we were armed with spare balls for everything. The bowler must still have a lane strategy to compete.
Wow I’ve been bowling on and off again since about 16-17 (now almost 32) and just learned as I go in leagues and just for fun games my best has been about 186 avg and 287 high (long time ago) and never had this much info nor it made this simple great vid man
I believe you found the answer. The key to the message of this video is to keep it simple. The simpler you keep the game, the less tense you apply to the game and the more relax you become. Then you begin using weight and leverage to the physics (pendulum swing) of the game. A twitch of any muscle in your delivery can throw your "shot" off.
+Rockness724 How can you still say great or even good when he is just mumbling? No matter how good his presentation is. Mumbling is totally not allowed.
Not all bowling alleys have lanes with range finders so those of us who bowl on lanes without range finders in my opinion are better bowlers because we have to pay more attention to where the ball is exiting the pattern since we don't have a visual sight to move off of. We basically have to guess from shot to shot or have someone look to see where the ball is exiting so we can make a proper adjustment.
Lane Quenemoen This is why I mentioned the use of pin deck light reflection and ball return cover planks. There are also dark and light boards that can be used for targets. This video is strictly awareness information, just in case yoiu bowl on lanes with range finders, you would be aware of what's out there. By having teammates to assist is a very good practice. This is what college team and national competition is all about. Keep helping each other and enjoy the sport of bowling.
I disagree with you here. I'm a fairly decent bowler just beginning league competition last summer. I didn't know what those marks meant until i watched this video just now... Having those marks on the lane mean nothing if you don't know how to use them. I went from a horrible 116 avg to a manageable 160 avg in about 8 months without knowing what a break point was or how to use the marks down lane.
Just watched your video. Been bowling for several years and still learned a few things from your video. I see you noted keeping an eye on the ball through the pin deck. I find little information on controlling the shape of the ball motion. Strikes can be thrown from the wrong ball path... any advice on how to adjust where your ball leaves the pin vice where it is hitting the pocket?
John Rocksvold Yes. Strikes can be made without contacting either the head pin or the strike pocket. Ball motion involves lane condition, core, ball layout, static weights, coverstock & surface preparation and the understanding of ball speed, revolutions, axis tilt & rotation. This subject is very lengthy to explain in this article. A USBC trained Bronze and above coach should be able to explain it to you. Ray
John Rocksvold I've thought more about your question on controlling ball motion. It has so many variables and will depend on the ball you are using, your hand release and the line you are playing. The presentation identifies ball motion in the "3 phases of ball motion" slide. If you stop the video and read what happens and listen to what I'm saying in each ball phase, it may become clear to what you're looking for. The key in the illustration is to allow the ball to get into that roll. That's where the power comes into play. I try to get my ball into that roll about 3 to 5 feet before hitting the pins. You can see it only for an instant before it hits the pins. Imagine a dragster spinning its tires while coming off the line. Nothing happens until the tires start grabbing the strip. That's what happens when a bowling ball grabs the lane. I hope this helps. Good luck. Ray
This message was sent by Lin Hammond: "Your Bowling Lane Strategy video is very good and I haven't seen it all. I'm approaching 60 and I'm feeling the aches and pain with age. Because of that I find it difficult to use the dots or arrows for targeting, have any suggestions? Thank you! Leonard" Hi Leonard - Dots and arrows targets are difficult for many, not only senior bowlers. Approach and lane markings are only guides. To constantly hit one board at any spot of the lane is extremely difficult, even for a professional bowler. I usually suggest to a bowler to aim for a larger target (like an AREA between the first and third arrows or between an adjacent pair of arrows) and roll the ball in that AREA. If you prefer to aim further down the lane, use the range finders (if no range finders, use dark/light boards and envision an AREA). Then roll the ball within that AREA. Use the key pins (4 = left side, 5 = center, 6 = right side) for spare alignments. A larger target (AREA) allows the bowler to become less tensed and more relaxed. Knowing how to relax is a key to this game. As you progress, you can reduce that AREA to improve accuracy. Play AREA targeting, use the fundamentals (keep it simple) and enjoy the game.
Thank you for such a simplified presentation. I bought a Hammer Absolute Curve bowling ball recently and learnt to bowl with a hook for the first time. I started feeling very comfortable with it. Last week I enrolled with a league at another bowling center which seems to have a heavy oil pattern. To my surprise, I could not hook the ball at all. I played my first game at the league with my ball literally behaving as a plastic ball. Any tips ?
The Hammer Absolute Curve seems to be a good Medium reacting ball and obviously did not react as expected on that “heavy oil pattern.” Perhaps a more aggressive ball would have been more appropriate. There are too many variables because I don’t know how you bowl and I can only hope to guess for a solution. Where were other players playing? Did you try adjusting the ball speed, get the ball to go into a roll, lay the ball down sooner or try a different line? There are many fine coaches in this country who can help. You are on the right track to bowl at different centers and under a variety of conditions. Keep that open mind and good luck.
Ray Wong Thanks for the reply. I tried creating more revs by supinating my forearm and wrist more at the start position and it seems to be working well now. I must thank you for your two point tracking system. I always used to wonder how to get more consistent at bowling and with the two point tracking system, I have hit the pocket more often than ever. I did have another question about your video. When you say, stand at 37th board for the 6 pin spare, are you aiming at the 20th board arrow or 25th? Also, do you know of a spare shooting system using the hook ball itself rather than a spare ball? Thanks
Ritz Ram I’m glad to hear that you were able to make adjustments. The purpose of my presentation is to have the bowler observe and think of how to make the next shot. As far as standing on the 37th board for the 6-pin spare is not concrete because every bowler will have their own approach drift pattern to the foul line. The video starting locations and targets are only examples. Another bowler may stand on the 30th board and drift left to the foul line. It is important to know your slide landing location at the foul line in relation to your starting and target points. I currently use a spare (straight) ball for converting most spares. The center arrow (20th board) and the first range finder (on the 15th board on either side) are respectably aligned to the 4 and 6 pins. The 3-6-9 spare system seems to work for most that do not use a spare ball. Once a bowler learns the fundamentals of the system, he/she will develop a system that will work for them. I use a modified version of the 3-6-9 spare system for multi-pin spares because of the two point targeting and my drift pattern. If you don’t use a spare ball, it is best to “dump” (or reverse) the ball with almost no rotation to convert a 10-pin spare. Caution, you may also encounter an “over or under” reaction when converting the 4 or 7-pin spare. I’m assuming you’re a right handed bowler. If not, please mirror my explanations.
Thank you for your video presentation and for sharing your knowledge. I am sure it will benefit bowlers of all experience levels. Mahalo nui loa iā ʻoe; ka maluhia a me ke aloha!
I've been hoping your comments are correct, "will benefit bowlers of all experience levels." I was thinking in line of the student and coach having intelligent conversations of any segment of the game. As you can see, I left the fine points out because each bowler is unique and individualized, and a coach is needed to fine tune the game. I was very fortunate to have the late John Jowdy, PBA players coach, analyze my game. Mahalo.
I have been bowling for 43 years and I got something out of your video, so I truly believe anyone can learn from it. Whether it be new information or a reminder of knowledge gained log ago, this is a great video that can help all bowlers. Be well and thank you!
Ray Great presentation'I have a comment regarding left side spares. when you say left foot in 28 board...are you counting boards from the left gutter or from the right gutter? The reason I asked is because in the slide eye movement for left spares you refer to the secondary target as 15 (you are counting from the left gutter)Thanks and keep up the good work
Since I'm a right handed bowler, I count everything from the right, except the range finders (it's from the nearest gutter). The 4-pin is in line with the center arrow (20th board) and the first range finder on the left while the 6-pin is in line with the center arrow and the first range finder on the right. These lane markings are only guides. The range finders could be addressed as first and second range finder on the left or right. I try to keep it simple and not too technical. I sometimes use the area between the third and fourth arrows to between the first and second range finders for corner spares. Experiment and find what works best for you. Enjoy and have some fun. Ray
Hi Ray, I have a question on the presentation. For left side spares, you said to stand with your left foot on the 28th board and move to the 29th for the 2 pin and the 27th for the 7 pin. Are you counting the boards from left to right. As a righty, that would put me on the left side of the approach, 9 boards right of where the video would have me stand for the 6 pin. Is this correct?
Whoa! Any detailed descriptions I mentioned in this video are only examples. You should use the targets that are comfortable to you. Please back up to where I described the 7 arrow targets, I counted the boards from right to left for right handed bowlers. The object here is to be aware that the center arrow (20th board) and the first right side rangefinder (15th board) are aligned to the 6-pin; and the center arrow (20th board) and the first left side rangefinder (15th board from the left) are aligned to the 4-pin. (The only time I count from the left is when I'm identifying the rangefinders because they mirror each other.) Another thing that is addressed here is wherever you align to the 4-pin, the object is to move one board left for the 2-pin and one board from your 4-pin alignment to the right for the 7-pin. That 4-pin starting position will depend upon your approach drift pattern, slide landing position at the foul line and lane condition (not necessarily the 28th board which is only an example). Be sure to use a spare ball to cancel any possible over/under ball reaction when going for corner pins. This video is an awareness presentation to alert you that something is happening to possibly make an adjustment to your next ball and allow coaches to fine tune the game.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There must be at least a million bowlers in the world today and this video is only one opinion of the game. To me, there are four types of bowlers: RECREATIONAL bowler = Who enjoys the game, loves its social aspects and creates fun ways of bowling. LEAGUE bowler = Who enjoys comradery and team competition. TOURNAMENT bowler = Who enjoys competition. COMPLETE bowler = Who takes one ball to the bowling center. This bowler can make that "one ball" DANCE down the lane. Think of it this way, being one of those million bowlers, there must be at least a million ways to have fun in this game. Please enjoy the fun.
Ray Wong thank you Sir ! I bowl on a Senior league that doesn’t put lane conditioning on the lanes. The head mechanic discovered oil makes his machines dirty. I have a bunch of high performance balls that sit in my house. My dream is to actually bowl on oil again someday. For now I’m the guy that takes that one low performance ball and make it dance.
thanks for a great video ai live in sweden and have play bowling for a long time never get boring but difficult ai have two handikap arms they are hooking right and left so ai cant swing so mutch but stil ai am not the last bowler in ouer 8 teams kfum karlskrona wer ai am bowling and ai can also do 200 250 220 serie some time have very difficult to get 800 serie may best is 799 many yer now have very good spare games difficult to gets strike often get around 700 games when it is right lain condichions good video thank you regards sven karlskrona keep up your bowling
I'm sorry, I don't understand your question, "What kind of equipment are they using?" What kind of equipment who (bowling center or bowler) is using? I don't believe I mentioned any brand of equipment. I guess you must have a bowling ball, a bowling lane with its associated machinery, pins, except the billiard balls. I carry two medium hooking balls and a polyester ball for spares. One hooking ball is drilled with a 4X4X2 layout and the other with a Rico layout. The spare ball is drilled straight up to go straight. You must match the equipment to your bowling style and lane condition. My video left this part open to the coach and pro shop operator to help you decide because everyone and every bowling center are different.
I will never be a professional announcer or speaker because I have a strong Hawaiian Pidgin accent which is not very clear with the English language. I wanted a woman, with a pleasant and clear voice, to narrate the video, but the subject or material would not be coming from me. I made the video on my home computer, not professionally created and it's not perfect. If you're expecting an Oscar winning video, this is not it. This video is for bowlers and I just want to share some bowling awareness information that I learned to help other bowlers. A handicap person on a wheel chair viewed the video and bowled a 266 game the very next day. He liked the two-point targeting concept and didn't have any problem understanding the video. I introduced two-point targeting, but also mentioned seven points to consider when delivering the bowling ball. Another person who began bowling a little over a year ago, currently averaging 157, claims the video helped him to understand on how to play the game. Apparently the video is interesting enough for you to keep viewing it. Just pick up one thing for your game and I have accomplished my goal. There are many fine bowling instruction videos on You-Tube. I have more awareness information to share, but do not have the skills to create that video. I think I may need a graphic artist, or someone who knows how to make movies, and definitely someone else to narrate it, to properly present my views. As I mentioned that this was my only attempt to make an amateur video. I just wanted to present some points, on what a tournament bowler looks at, while in competition (leagues and/or tournaments). Please excuse my monotony Hawaiian Pidgin and I promise never to narrate another video. :-) Ray
That is a shame to promise never to narrate sir. I had absolutely no problem understanding every word that you said and I might add that I retained every thing from listening. One of the best instructional videos that I have seen. Thank you Mr. Wong.
You are so very kind. I'd say that 60% of the video is in narration. I could not explain every detail of each subject because everyone is different and coaches/instructors have a better position to correcting or explaining to the individual bowler. For example - How do you teach the crossover step to a bowler in a wheelchair? Thank you for your positive comment. Ray
Most (not all) beginner bowlers use the spare zone for strikes and any zone for spares. The goal is to knock all the pins down within two balls in a frame and/or bowl a 300 game (with 12 deliveries) or score 20 in a low-ball game (with 20 deliveries). The goal is to bowl on any part of the lane for strikes and spares. This video introduces you to be aware of what to look for while bowling. Oil patterns move as more balls are rolled. A qualified coach or instructor can be helpful in this area because everyone is unique in their own bowling styles. Keep an open mind and keep it simple. Enjoy bowling and have fun.
So basically, your starting position is not deviating more than 3 or 4 boards?? No matter if you're trying to pick up spares on the left or right side??? interesting.
+david peterson Gee, thanks for the compliment. You must have been to the Bowling Alley where I bowl. There are a lot of holes in our lanes because I've been after that Gopher. Yes, I joke a lot while bowling and I wish I was Bill Murray. I'd make bowling a fun game.
Hello Ray, How have you been? I wanted to express that your marvelous presentation is a superhit and certainly deserves way more hits/ views so that many more out there could benefit from it. Your presentation has helped me a lot improve my game and what else is helping me currently is regular visits to a certain forum on bowling: forum.bowlingchat.net This forum has many renowned certified coaches who make their contributions to help players of different levels improve their game. Your video presentation has already created a fan following up there and I have been specially asked by one of the coaches to invite you to the forum. Please check the site and do consider logging in. Any contribution from your expertise will only help the game grow further. Thanks Ritz
Ritz Ram Hi Ryan, I hope the video reaches many bowlers because it introduces points that coaches are teaching within the past decade. USBC and Kegel have been conducting in-depth research in understanding the game. That forum you are participating with is an excellent path to be on. Communication is a key to improvement. If you watch college competition, coaches are emphasizing communication among teammates because the bowler can feel the lane changes, while the coach cannot. This technique can be very useful in competing at the national level.
I was born and raised in Hawaii where many nationalities are mixed. I grew up with a handful of friends who collectively consist of over a dozen nationalities. Not one of us is a thoroughbred of one nationality. Does this now mean that you are trusting me only part of the time? I hope I can influence you to trust whomever is qualified or knowledgeable to teach you on any subject, such as a school teacher, coach or counselor. We are here on earth for only a brief time. Please learn as much as you can from a variety of instructors and enjoy life.
My coaching colleague, John Simanella, has another way to describe my two-point targeting by saying, "in order to be truly accurate, a second target is required for true accuracy. As on a rifle barrel, there is a sight on the front and one on the back - both sights have to be on the target for accuracy." In our case, the back sight is the visual target (arrows, dots or boards in between) and the front sight is the exit point (PL-31).
This is by far the most helpful tool for new bowlers on the internet. Thank You for the knowledge!
Absolute Gold, Mr. Wong! 🏅
After all these years, I keep finding myself rewatching this video to reinforce fundamentals.
I hope you realize how many bowlers you’ve helped out (and how much we appreciate you)!! 🙏🏼
perhaps the best video i have seen in regards to keeping it simple, picking your targets.
This has been the most comprehensive explanation on how to implement the rule of 31 into my game . Thank you so much 😊
This is one of the best bowling lane strategy videos. I've sent the link to several friends. And we all understand you very clearly! Thanks Ray!
Really an excellent video. I’ve been bowling for years and yet still learned so much. Already I’ve watched it twice. Mr Wong you are very knowledgeable and very generous to share that knowledge.
by far one of the most informative and helpful instructional bowling videos out there
Thank you for your kind compliments. Its techniques are used on the National PBA tour. I'm glad you are learning something from it and please forward it to your family, friends and other bowlers.
Thank you for the excellent video Coach Rey! Filled with details but imple and easy to understand. Kudos!
Excellent video...very informative...especially the oil patterns and the minus 31 formula. Nice to see a presentation thats well researched and executed. Thanks a ton.
Akshay Kamath the rule of 31 was one of the few true points
One of the best and informative videos on bowling I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much Ray! Mahalo 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Please pass it on to your relatives, friends and other bowlers. I'd like to help as many bowlers as I can. Enjoy the game.
Thank you very much sir. This has been one of the most informative videos that I have ever seen.
Great summary for beginner and advanced bowler. I liked the plank and light reflection tip for estimating the Exit Point. Thank You Very Much.
Needs more upvote. This helped my game tremendously
Ray Wong, thank you very much Sir for your instructional video, I think it is one of the best videos on RUclips.
Great presentation and explanations. I still have problems lining up for spares.
Thanks Ray.
Dove Bar
This is exactly what the video was meant to be, in-depth discussions between students and coaches/instructors.
Many thanks Ray. I'm so excited to get back into bowling after so many yrs.
This presentation made me to bowl again. Thank you so much, Mr. Wong.
Welcome back. Please call me Ray. We're all in this together, us verses the pins. Any way this video can encourage anyone is a step forward. Please share this video with others and have fun. Mahalo. Ray
Thanks for this! Trying to improve my spare game. I kind of did the Strike part naturally but still good to know.
Great info. makes things a lot easier to understand. been back to bowling after 40yr.
layoff. Mahalo!!!
Brilliant. I almost never miss my spares now after this instructions video. watch this before every tournament. my avg. has gone from 196 to 212. Thank you
Great learning video! You provided some great key points to focus on which I took my or granted.
Thank you so much Ray for your insight and keep it simple approach to the great game of bowling.
Wow Ray. That was an incredible instructional video. Thanks so much for all of your effort! :)
Took a while but I did find your explanation how Kegel arrived at 31 in the formula. Thanks for your time.
Thanks Ray. Not to worry. This video is very helpful to us, amateur bowlers.
Thank you for this, well put together. Great information for new bowlers and people looking to brush up on there bowling knowledge
Thanks for the great presentation. Well Done, Sir!
awesome video, good info I plan on trying this weekend during practice. thank you
Great video wish we had more!
Great presentation! Very well done!!!
Rockness724 Mahalo. Thanks. Ray
+Rockness724 How can you still say great or even good when he is just mumbling? No matter how good his presentation is. Mumbling is totally not allowed.
+Winzal Ahvella Please read my comments I posted a minute ago. Thanks. Ray
Love the video very informative. Thank you Mr. Wong
Great video Ray! Thanks so much!
Would you please explain where the number 31 comes from in the PL-31 formula ! Mahalo !
It is a great video. Thank you for posting it.
I went from a horrible 116 avg to a manageable 160 avg in about 8 months without knowing what a break point was or how to use the marks down lane.
very good, i will use this info as i get ready to compete in this years pba 50 west coast swing thank you
There are many very nice people (bowlers, fans and volunteers) all over the country. Enjoy and good luck on your PBA50 West Coast swing.
Great video!
Very nicely done.
Ball motion involves lane condition, core, ball layout, static weights, coverstock
& surface preparation and the understanding of ball speed, revolutions, axis tilt & rotation.
Good luck. Ray

"Your Bowling Lane Strategy video is very good and I haven't seen it all. I'm approaching 60 and I'm feeling the aches and pain with age. Because of that I find it difficult to use the dots or arrows for targeting, have any suggestions? Thank you! Leonard"
Hi Leonard - Dots and arrows targets are difficult for many, not only senior bowlers.
Thank you for a very informative video!
Ray Wong Thanks again Ryan. You are the best.
Be well and thank you!
this is a great training video im a left handed bowler but get the idea ty very much
Love this video. Thank you.
Terrific Job
Very helpful
Thank you
Great information!!!! Thank you!
Awesome 💯
Thank you. Very well done.
Ray
This video is gold
Hi Ray,
I have a question on the presentation.
Well you did it , you just took all the fun out of it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There must be at least a million bowlers in the world today and this video is only one opinion of the game. To me, there are four types of bowlers:
RECREATIONAL bowler = Who enjoys the game, loves its social aspects and creates fun ways of bowling.
@@harveywallbanger2899 When you become that complete bowler, you can control your destiny and the fun begins.
Ray Wong I will take that to heart thank you Sensei. I’m almost there 🤕
Great video, thank you!
thanks for a great video ai live in sweden and have play bowling for a long time never get boring but difficult ai have two handikap arms they are hooking right and left so ai cant swing so mutch but stil ai am not the last bowler in ouer 8 teams kfum karlskrona wer ai am bowling and ai can also do 200 250 220 serie some time have very difficult to get 800 serie may best is 799 many yer now have very good spare games difficult to gets strike often get around 700 games when it is right lain condichions good video thank you regards sven karlskrona keep up your bowling
Vary good information. THANK-you
I'm sorry, I don't understand your question, "What kind of equipment are they using?" What kind of equipment who (bowling center or bowler) is using? I don't believe I mentioned any brand of equipment. I guess you must have a bowling ball, a bowling lane with its associated machinery, pins, except the billiard balls. I carry two medium hooking balls and a polyester ball for spares. One hooking ball is drilled with a 4X4X2 layout and the other with a Rico layout. The spare ball is drilled straight up to go straight. You must match the equipment to your bowling style and lane condition. My video left this part open to the coach and pro shop operator to help you decide because everyone and every bowling center are different.
I think the spare and strike zone can change depending on speed and revs but overall nice presentation
Absolutely, plus oil application.
Ray
You are much too harsh on yourself. It is a great presentation, Ray! Very easy to understand and very easy to implement on the lanes. Thank you.
Fuck what the haters got to say bro bro Ray Wong
Ray Wong h
very insightful thanks
Great great video
i use spare zone for strikes... and any zone for spares
Enjoy bowling and have fun.
wonderful
thanks ray this is awsome
very informative thank you
Ray Wong this is excellent
yeeeet thanks BROTHER!
Thank you
It's unfortunate i couldnt add more than a single like, good video will consider this tomorrow night
you da man
So basically, your starting position is not deviating more than 3 or 4 boards?? No matter if you're trying to pick up spares on the left or right side??? interesting.
Keep it simple and use the oil to your advantage. Ray
Right! Oil doesn’t come into play with a spare ball 3 6 9 board off your strike mark for single pins spares
*different oil patters*

Hi Ryan, I hope the video reaches many bowlers because it introduces points that coaches are teaching within the past decade.

Bowling lane strategy = put the ball on the lane and kick it......with today's equipment and lane conditions that's all there is to it.
