I think at some point I started saying Hypothalimus and not Hippocampus (lack of coffee).
As explained its the confusion with the physical affects on the Hypothalamus ANS the Hippocampus. Both are physically affected.
In the HPA axis there is increased T4 and neuroephinephrine making you more anxious and prone to startle.
To be clear Im not trying to affect those things (it may not be possible without drugs, I dont know) my focus here is SOLELY the Hippocampus (named for the sea horse shaped part of the brain) that is thought to alter in volume and to be related to memory and emotion.
The research to be read that is the background to the hypothesis I present here. All have very very easy to read abstracts, you dont need to read the full method if you dont want to.
But please... I made a lot of effort to put these concepts together, I dont mind polite debate, but if you post a comment that shows you havent bothered to read the clear abstracts of these 8 papers (takes less than 10 minutes) then I wont be particularly fussed about answering you.
NONE OF THIS IS MEDICAL ADVICE. Do as your doctor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist advises you.
You will NOT replicate the results of the studies by playing Tetris...OBVIOUSLY.
Once the memory is set (no longer malleable) it will have no effect.
You must do the emotional literacy exercise regularly in the hope it generates neuroplasticity and malleability and reactivates the hippocampus.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29489273
"The hippocampus is the "flash drive" of the human brain and often associated with memory consolidation and decision making, but it is far more complex in structure and function than a flash drive."
Thats the science folks, it really is like the hard drive I describe here.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3182008/
Hippocampus SHRINKS in volume and becomes less active.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23021615
The intensity of the ptsd may be the distinguishing factor in brain changes.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21443892
Twin study showing smaller hippocampus of twin with combat ptsd.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5678449/
Tetris and PTSD, I dont know why the title doesnt match the methodology and yet it still got published, lol!. Its not "several days after" in this study it was up to 24 hours after and usually within 6 hours of the event.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14534587
Memories are malleable during the consolidation phase, which is thought to end after approximately six hours.
Ladies and Gents - all the DAMAGE listed is fixable, the Hippocampus can return to full volume and the HPA axis CAN be re regulated.
Take heart, do the work please.

I was about to say I think you mean the hippocampus. There was also a study of taxi drivers in London, they have large hippocampus because they have to use memory to drive around London. It was on a doco on depression I think somewhere on the RUclips.
Thank you for this video and sharing the secret. This explains some stuff that I have been observing about myself lately.
When I first started doing the hand mnemonic it took a couple of days to just remember what to say but after that I started recognising when I was having a flashback. It is life changing. Easy and effective to do.
I am loving the 30 day challenge and the progress I am making so I thank you so much for that too.

The first time I tried the hand mnemonic, last year, my resistance to it was off the scale so dumped it almost immediately. Second time round, and it was the different version you offered: 1. I am not my emotional flashbacks 2. My goal state is calm serenity; powerful agency and emotional regulation 3. I welcome my feelings, they are teaching and guiding me 4. I am comfortable with self interested action, I am happy to put myself first 5. I am my own self, the captain of my own ship. My life is my responsibility, and your life, is yours (personal tweaks added to make it stick!). I've been doing this one since January as a daily practice. It. WORKS. Trust the process, DO it. Thanks so much Richard.

For me, a miracle happened. I am 77 years old (female). I have been in therapy (serious therapy) practically full time since age 30. I also went to a treatment center for alcohol, drugs and SLAA. I have had an eating disorder that seems to be stable now. I also smoked from the age of 14 and quit when I got clean and sober 35 years ago. I am now seeing a psychiatrist that was assigned to me when I ended up at a psychiatric hospital at the end of a five year legal battle with my sister. I continue to see that psychiatrist right up through today. Months ago she started pressing me in a different way as things in my life continued to run out of control. I was wandering around the bottom of the pit. And, about two months ago, I found you on RUclips. (I am in the process of trying to establish a channel on RUclips.) I have watched with total enthusiasm! I did the finger exercises for I think about three weeks. Therapy was getting heavy and so after the finger exercises I didn't watch you for a couple of months. Then about two weeks ago I started watching again and got directly to the emotional literacy information but I couldn't figure out how to get to the part that told me how to do it. Finally I did. I did 4 or 5 days of exercises (which I found really interesting) and then a few days ago I was alone in my car driving when all of a sudden out of the blue the whole family dynamic and my position in it came roaring to life. I saw the whole complete picture for the first time. I started raging at the family, screaming at the top of my lungs saying all the things I guess I always wanted to say. I could just feel this huge mountain lifting off of my shoulders. I got to the store and ran into an old friend who said you look so happy you look just great. With that I burst into tears, tears that I know were for the little girl inside. A huge shift has taken place. It is as if I can finally see it all so clearly now. I understand it all. I can hold all of them responsible for each part they played in using me and in keeping me outside of the family circle. My whole life makes sense. I feel a calm I have never felt before. The rage that was controlling me is now focused solely on the family and it feels contained for the first time. I think I will never suffer road rage again, or suddenly start screaming at some innocent person who did some minor thing. When I watched this video tonight it all made so much sense. The way the process works and why. I cannot thank you enough. I have only wanted to die for the last 57 years. I know I have so much more work to do, but realize how hugely important the emotional literacy exercises are for me. I will continue to do them and to watch you. You have changed my life. I can't thank you enough. If there are times, as I am sure there must be, when you wonder why you are working so hard...well here is one reason why. My life is forever changed. Whatever years I have left will be lived in a kind of peace I didn't know was possible.

Wow, that part towards the end about the post-hypnotic programming explains a lot in relation to abusive relationships as well. After an incidence of physical abuse from my ex, he would then sometimes nurture me and whisper in my ear that he loved me and would never intentionally hurt me, he was a "good guy" etc while i was in shock, programming me repeatedly to believe it was some kind of rare, out-of-character event rather than a cycle or pattern of his behavior that would later reveal itself to me. Excellent video and fascinating ideas!

From one who "stuck right the way through" the vid- wow! Thank you thank you thank you. The shrunken -hypothalamus- hippocampus explains so much, and the idea that it can regenerate through these exercises and maybe give this hopeless person, a formerly very bright and capable human who now has very little agency, is severely depressed, can't seem to get much done, doesn't track very well, has serious short-term memory problems and seemingly very little executive function, isn't coping, is disorganized, has a messy home, and struggles with even small decisions-- maybe there is a way out of this nightmare that my life has turned into? About the "retreiving process" of emotions: I usually have a kind of weird process that works really well for me, I ask myself what do I feel, nothings gets out, then I take a walk or short road trip (music on, blasting sometimes)... and BAM, it gets out !!! 😄😄. But in the begining it seems like nothing is there.. when at the end of the trip actually a LOT of emotion is there. Moving the body helps accessing emotional content, I'm a big believer in that!

This was very good. When on the couch with Freud , he claimed that to pause in the association the patient was not telling the truth and also Freud was much criticized, because he also said that to blurt out quickly was inauthentic. Freud said that he just knew. I feel that I just know that the emotion is absolutely true, when I get a bodily response (sinking, tightening etc) If it doesn't have an associated somatic response, I will question it.

    Hi Richard,
I'm a new subscriber. Right around the time America started shutting down, I confronted the fact that I'd been involved with a narcissistic psychopath (possibly sociopath) for the past few years. The global hysteria and political narcissism coupled with the realization that I'd been psychologically/emotionally abused by the man who was "my person", led me on a profound personal awakening. He wasn't my first narcissist. Here's the thing...I've celebrated 42 rotations around the sun and the majority of them have involved some level of narcissistic abuse. I am resilient and am ready to heal to embrace life and love. I started therapy for C-PTSD and had my first session of EMDR today. It was extremely exhausting in a very positive way. I found you about a month ago and have learned a lot already. I'm a single mom of a 7 year old girl. I want to heal, so that she doesn't have to. I want to do the work. How can I take part in your 30 day challenge? If I'm too late for that, are there certain videos you recommend I watch first?

The intention to heal is everything ... and can be dastardly slippery. You might think you have the intention but if you don't really believe it's possible, you can't form a real intention and without that you cannot reach the goal. The evidence out there for nervous system plasticity is a huge game changer for the traumatized because we now have physiological 'reasons' for our perceived painful reality AND solid evidence that those physiological manifestations of trauma can be reversed. Gotta take heart and do the work. And thank goodness that an honest healer is offering the info without demanding a half year's wages. Right on Grannon!

Thank you so much for explaining all this. It's so helpful to me, a half-intellectual. Logic and being incredibly stubborn about rejecting anything I couldn't track entirely from point A to point Z is 80% of how I survived my childhood without winding up dead or in prison. Watching all your videos from the very first one over the last year or so was completely necessary for me because the toxic superego still had such a stronghold, you couldn't just come right at it. It had the upper hand in a face to face battle, every time. Watching it all in a fairly passive and comfortingly detached way was the giant NLP dance that was required to send anything past the minefield so I could HEAR you tell me what to do. And I'm doing it, and it's working. My life is different just like you said, and the biggest change by far is that I know it will continue to change. The hopelessness left when the majority of the self-loathing was dismantled. Now I'm at a point where the second-biggest change (accepting the idea that messiness is okay and not a failure) has allowed for every chunk of progress to be accepted and celebrated and bolster another chunk in a big lovely accelerating feedback loop of healing. I am so grateful for your simple commands but equally for these detailed explanations. You're amazing, thank you so much Richard.

When the narcissistic abuse finally became clear to me I thought:how in bloody hell are you going to find an EMDR or similar shrink who is going to wipe all of this mess away. So that you can finally perform your maternal obligations and have a life. The therapist search became a huge problem in my mind. It is a task almost as difficult as the healing process. Now I have found this precious toolkit which makes me independent. Thanks so much for it. You and Sam are the best! You have become part of my family at least in my mind.

just rewatched and want to share that I experienced exactly what is said about how practicing consistently develops the self-awareness of emotional states. I thought I was getting it right from the start but after 90 days consistent work with this exercise within the 'Unplug' course I experience there is more coming up and layers that reveal and the 'inside dude' is getting better at getting what I asked for out of the former chaos or at least is getting much better at finding authentic instead of made up ones. it really takes time after decades of chaotic mental state. this is so valuable.

Man, this one is one of the best videos you have done. I started watching your non-Fortress channel about 2.5 years ago on the back end of a painful break-up, exploring CPTSR, and then read Pete Walker at your suggestion (Sad Baby). I just found the Fortress set a couple of days ago. I had some revelations toward the end of this thing regarding my crappy memory (it always has been) and strange inability to associate certain types of information sometimes (though I do have a good long-term memory) This information is spot on. I'm going to have to do the exercises. Very well-explained. Also I had about three belly-laughs at some of the impromptu jokes. Also I'm glad you cuss like a sailor. So do I. (Doesn't everyone???)

You are a rare and precious person. I am an atheist and believe critical thinking and the scientific method is imperative. The ironic part of my life is, I could do and used to do readings and I cannot explain how I could be so detailed. I could explain the red and white checkered curtains in someone's kitchen or the long dirt drive way to a person's house. It has to be scientific in a sense, that we are all part of energy and the universe.

Complex trauma does not require complex system to heal. I know this after seeing doctors and therapists for years who tried different complex ways to deal with my trauma- their 'simple' answer was medication. I'm 51 and had all forms of abuse for 46 years. I'm the biggest cynic you could wish to meet as a result. The system Richard has developed works. I have hope where I didnt have it before but it takes work and conscious attention to keep the flashbacks at bay, to do the mind map, to address the critic when it rears its head. Anything that takes effort can take a while to get used to doing it but it is worth it. Thank you 😊

I’ve been doing the hand mnemonic for at least 60 days now. Still have the alarm on my phone, even though I don’t need it, it helps. At times, the hand exercise is easy, sometimes it is still quite difficult, especially the third finger - BUT that’s the key, I push through it and name the emotions as best I can. Also, I still occasionally drift into negative thought while doing the mnemonic, but I recognize it and get through it. Thank you Richard. It does work.

But the truth is the exact opposite: your situation isn't unique to you (and thank God that there are other people out there who you can sympathise with), and it is treatable. YOU do the work, YOU treat it YOURSELF. You can do it.

But coming to u is very healing, u feel emotionally connected one can trust u cause u feel that u have gone through it ur self and u recognise everything u say and it becomes like an open road straight to healing! "I feel like this is what it is, so that is what it is"
Since I started to emotionally literate myself, I asked me a lot of times: how do I know that I am really feeling that? and I had to convince me hard that my emotions were actual and true just because I was feeling them. That's how disconnected I was from myself, I didn't even trust that what I felt was true. Only the flashbacks were real to me. I was so lost and rusty, exactly how you tell it, I have to laugh hearing you now, I am on the mend and nodding to each of your words.
