Invasion of Sicily 1943, Every Hour

  • Take a look at the Invasion of Sicily by American, Canadian and British troops.
    Details:
    The last days of the invasion are not entirely correct, because I could not find enough accurate information. The days should be right. I also did not find the exact time of occupying the smaller islands around Sicily and they are only approximate (the days are right again).

    The mapping is really impressive. It shows something of note about the occupation: while the Americans were supposed to be in a supporting role to the British, George Patton was having absolutely none of it. The British didn't even get to occupy Messina, which they intended to do at the start of the offensive.

      The Eastern side of Sicily is a lot more hilly, with basically rocky ridgeline after rocky ridgeline. Great territory to defend, a lot more difficult and costly to attack (as both the British/Canadian progress and casualty figures show). Western Sicily is a lot flatter with open spaces - perfect for overwhelming Allied material superiority.

      They definitely did fight back. The Allies had overwhelming firepower, manpower, and air support. The axis never stood a chance. This was after their disaster in Stalingrad as well. After they lost North Africa, Mussolini’s doomed fate was all but sealed. Mussolini’s Italy was going to be destroyed, a landing in Sicily the Allies were now within reach of all Axis cities in Southern and South East Europe to be bombed to smithereens.

    • @thunderbird1921
      @thunderbird1921 Год назад +4

      The Italian Army (at least the pro-Fascist ones among others) DID fight in Sicily, their regime's very survival depended on keeping the Anglo-American coalition from establishing a foothold to invade the peninsula or launch major airstrikes further inland. To be honest, the Battle of Sicily and ESPECIALLY the invasion of the Italian mainland that followed is what brought down both Mussolini AND Hitler. Nazi Germany only had enough troops for one major front in Europe, so once the pressure on the Soviets was relieved, Germany's eventual downfall was likely secured. Hitler's only real chance from late 1943 onwards was either some miraculous shift in fortunes on the Eastern Front or to divide the Allies on reaching peace and making a separate agreement with the western powers (this is apparently part of the reason he launched the Battle of the Bulge, as long a shot as it was). Needless to say, neither situation happened.
