I kinda wonder why so many of these got cut from the final product. A lot of them actually give useful hints in those spots where I think every first time half life player gets lost or stuck. Plus as they get more hostile it really does create an uneasiness in the overall tone of the game which would have been pretty cool in the final stages, really nailing home the public enemy number 1 status you're assigned early on.
I know that 4 months have passed since you commented, but some dialogues were removed due to changes in location, such as the dialogues of the C3A1 map, since they belong to the chapter of the communications center.
@@elgeneralvicentexpinas8956 I know that a year has passed since you commented, but the C1A2 lines would have been perfect to warn the player of Black Mesa's turrets, those lines honestly add quite a lot to the atmosphere, imo. Definitely should have stayed in.
I kinda thought the cooler lines were cut out. I like that the military is trying to intimidate you with it, when up to that point it just seemed like harmless intercom noise in the game.
It's interesting how you can feel the situation spiralling out of control just via the PA system announcements. And I'm wondering if the announcement system is some text to speech program. It would surely seem inconvenient to say irregular announcements.
I think the PA is a text to speech for Black Mesa controlled via one or multiple stations across Black Mesa, while it isn’t a real TTS I think in canon it is either some kind of Voice Changer or TTS
I do also think that there is an AI for maintaince and most likely quick shortcuts (i.e locations or people) for quicker announcements, but it could most likely say anything if ever needed
No, it's not. He says "super-cooled laser laboratory". Because that's an actual, real term. A super-cooled laser is an actual thing that exists and has a place in a science lab. A "super cool laser" isn't. Also, if you listen better, you can actually _hear_ him say it. Ffs.
Ansatsunin I believe you completely. I was sorta joking about how a lot of people find lasers really interesting or fun to watch or something. The first time I heard VOX say that what I heard was 'super cool laser laboratory' but 'super-cooled' actually makes way more sense in all seriousness.
I imagine that this announcement system isnt really a basic AI. I propose that it is actually a text-to-speech player that is controlled from some central system that automatically generates responses when there are maintenance problems and whatnot, but when military took control, they type what they want to say. its just a theory.....
DizzySecretary either it had the names of all the scientists and staff, or it was a TTS. Everything being manual would, however, explain why it may be talking around certain words.
It could actually canonically work just like it does in game: just prerecorded words and tones that get spliced together to form sentences. Just in-universe the splicing is likely done from a computer in the communications hub, while in-game it's predefined in the sentences list.
I find the announcements for government personnel (agents and military) interesting: "Agent Coomer, report to Topside Tactical Operations Center." "Agent 16, report to Administration Sub Level 2." "Sergeant Bailey, to Topside Checkpoint Bravo." "Coded message for Captain Black, Command and Communication Center." "Sergeant Guthrie, report to Topside Motorpool immediately." I can only imagine that they were all being prepped for the Incident somehow. Interesting how three of them were called to the surface… Perhaps so they could escape right away? Or perhaps so they could rendezvous with the HECU as soon as they arrived? Maybe even help them get inside the complex?
The Wikipedia says that the agents and sergeants are black mesa security guards, and coomer was probably getting a briefing on the experiment they wouldn’t know would go so wrong, the rest were probably going to report to any malfunctioning equipment.
When I first played this game, I remember being so immersed in the story. I was so scared and thrilled. I also remember the first encounter with military I thought the game was broken. I couldn't believe they were trying to kill me. I had believed the VOX announcements and looked forward to finally seeing military forces. I thought we would fight the aliens together.. I remember killing my first squad and thinking, "IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!" No other game has been able to immerse me in the story nearly as successfully as the Half Life series. Having researched online I came to the sad conclusion that there would not be a sequel to the series as the creators knew a sequel would only disappoint fans. This is what happens when a game is actually good. The official sequels stop, but the fan made modifications continue. Most of the voice actors for this game have passed away by now as well.
Half Life 3 has to push new boundaries in gaming just like the previous games did. That boundary is in VR gaming now. Half Life: Alyx was a test. Half Life 3 will come out.
“Dr. Freeman, report to Anomalous Materials Test Laboratory immediately.” Later in “Forget About Freeman!” “Message for Gordon Freeman, you will not escape this time.” Gordon wants to die after hearing that.
I wonder how these unused lines would have influenced the writing of Freeman's Mind if they were left in the game. Somebody needs to put all these lines back in via mod.
He freaked out bad enough when he saw the drawing of his name. If the announcement system would straight up threaten him to surrender and kill himself, he would have gone mental.
@@NickJerrisonI mean he wouldn't have gone mental if you ask me. All those adrenaline and morphine shots basically made him an emotionless unstoppable god.
8:06 Ahaha! Hey-*shoots headcrab* I think that intercom said turret maintenance to center command! I'll bet they have some questions. Like why are our turrets killing our employees? XD
I love how his voice lines are just like old text to speech programs, where they just recorded a bunch of words, then they get pasted together for each line.
At first I was trying to imagine why a lab would have autonomous lethal turrets installed. Then I considered, in HL-world, competitors like Aperture might blink in to steal your fancy rocks, or some unidentified military might drop by for the same.
And then you will learn about the teleportation technology, which, it turns out, was discovered even before the cascade resonance began, and such - indeed, suddenly an alien tripod will come out from the other side.
Any chance of doing another one of these for the Black Mesa remake? I always though it was cool how they decided to change the voice of the VOX after the military takes control. Great video btw!
Warning, biohazard force detected in Lambda Reactor, all personal science evacuate to exit, immediately! Extreme Danger, reactor temperature is critical! Attention, all milirtary personal, extreme atomic biological chemical alert.
What I learned the computer voice had so many words and phrases, and then I learn how to make it say those words and phrases endgame, I must've spent like 10 or 15 minutes just playing with it. I love the way they did synthesized speech, in this game!
8:06 "I think that intercom said Turret Maintenance to Center Command. Yeah, I bet they have some questions. Like why are our turret guns killing everyone in the building?"
When I was in the hospital recovering from covid I was either dreaming or having a bad side effect from whatever drugs they were giving me but I imagined myself fighting for my life in a vector environment(think 3d using vector graphics like the old Star Wars arcade game) and THIS voice was doing the narration.
I don't know why they left many of these out, they actually put more content to the story and gameplay. The Black Mesa falling apart, the military getting extremely angry at Freeman and making him a main target.
Little atmospheric details like this, and those revolving signs, are what made this game so epic. The announcements changed as you progressed and became more menacing adding to the tension.
Imagine having a lunch break away of sector C of Black Mesa and hearing all the warnings and alarms through the VOX, having no idea what the hell happened there
What I like most about the announcements is many of them are referring to now-distant events in recent chapters, some of them wrought by your hand. Makes the universe feel bigger than just the swath you/Freeman is causing.

@@Liamlucid I know that a year has passed since you commented. RUclips says so. That's all. Have a very safe and productive day. c:

@@plazmasyt I know 8 months have passed since you commented, but I hope your day is going good. Have a safe and productive day. :)
best content, HL1 is legendary, so much deep lore and interesting stuff left in the files
@Cory Bernhardt wow, that would be really cool!
@@SourGummyes That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for explaining it. 🙂
It's awesome how a 1998's game can still be able to show us so much *hiden* content XD HALF-LIFER FOREVER!!
SUPER COOL LASER LABORATORY
Fluffy Destroyer super cool indeed
super cooled
Please.
So if half of the vox voice lines are unused so...
Thats why half life is half life?
REPORT TO SUPER COOL LASER LABORATORY
.. No. "Super-cooled laser laboratory". Ffs.
slipAngle Taking that a bit too seriously, mate.
Ansatsunin I heard "super cool" as well, though either is probably true :)
The first time I heard VOX say that what I heard was 'super cool laser laboratory' but 'super-cooled' actually makes way more sense in all seriousness.
did anyone else think "supercooled laser laboratory" was "super cool laser laboratory"
Vox: Rocket launch GOOD
Dr.Freeman: Rocket launch good, is that what he said?
Vox: YES
Rocket launch
*good*
That part literally tortured me with laughter
I imagine that this announcement system isnt really a basic AI. I propose that it is actually a text-to-speech player that is controlled from some central system that automatically generates responses when there are maintenance problems and whatnot, but when military took control, they type what they want to say. its just a theory.....
DizzySecretary either it had the names of all the scientists and staff, or it was a TTS. Everything being manual would, however, explain why it may be talking around certain words.
no shit, you think it's got a protocol telling freeman to surrender?
While GLaDOS is SHODAN, VOX is Xerxes.
Thats not a theory, that is very obviously what the game is throwing in your face, the fact you missed this is concerning.
It could actually canonically work just like it does in game: just prerecorded words and tones that get spliced together to form sentences. Just in-universe the splicing is likely done from a computer in the communications hub, while in-game it's predefined in the sentences list.
15:45 "You are authorized to shoot on sight." You mean they weren't before?
They were also supposed to capture and question but I guess not for Gordon specifically
Probably didn’t think there would be that many aliens there. Not to mention probably discovered what they were doing
I find the announcements for government personnel (agents and military) interesting:
"Agent Coomer, report to Topside Tactical Operations Center."
"Agent 16, report to Administration Sub Level 2."
"Sergeant Bailey, to Topside Checkpoint Bravo."
"Coded message for Captain Black, Command and Communication Center."
"Sergeant Guthrie, report to Topside Motorpool immediately."
I can only imagine that they were all being prepped for the Incident somehow.
That’s Security Personnel.
I remember killing my first squad and thinking, "IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!"
No other game has been able to immerse me in the story nearly as successfully as the Half Life series. Having researched online I came to the sad conclusion that there would not be a sequel to the series as the creators knew a sequel would only disappoint fans. This is what happens when a game is actually good. The official sequels stop, but the fan made modifications continue. Most of the voice actors for this game have passed away by now as well.
Passed away, really?
ah that gives me a lonely feeling ...
they rlly passed away?
Um no they havent passed away. Its only been 20 years, not like HL came out in the 1940s or something. 🙄
Most? No
Half Life 3 has to push new boundaries in gaming just like the previous games did. That boundary is in VR gaming now. Half Life: Alyx was a test. Half Life 3 will come out.
“Dr. Freeman, report to Anomalous Materials Test Laboratory immediately.”
Later in “Forget About Freeman!”
“Message for Gordon Freeman, you will not escape this time.”
Gordon wants to die after hearing that.
The warning sound freaks me the fuck out.
“Great even God wants me dead now!”
**has gone so mad that he thinks VOX is God**
"FREEMAN, WE WILL TERMINATE SCIENCE PERSONAL UNTIL YOU SURRENDER"
"Well sucks to be them. Not my problem"
@@NickJerrisonI mean he wouldn't have gone mental if you ask me. All those adrenaline and morphine shots basically made him an emotionless unstoppable god.
I love this announcement system. It's genuinely unnerving, the voice is super robotic. Enhances an already perfected atmosphere.
I wish we had the original program they used to make these lines, this would be amazing as a text-to-speech voice.
The Renegadist you can edit them in the game files
It sounds pretty similar to Microsoft Sam or some old text-to speech used in 1990s or early 2000s, there weren't many back then.
I totally forgot about Vox! He was like a character in his own right!
9:18 probably the most scary VOX Announcement at Black Mesa
3:18 Goddamn, I wish I was working at the Super Cool Laser Laboratory.
9:17 chills went down my spine
For the longest time, VOX reminded me of Cold War era Russian technology and I never knew why until now:
10:20 the buzzer
VOX is still the most amazing announcement system I've ever seen in a video game.
8:06 Ahaha! Hey-*shoots headcrab* I think that intercom said turret maintenance to center command! I'll bet they have some questions. Like why are our turrets killing our employees? XD
Turrets kill everything.
Soldiers deactivate them.
Freeman's Mind episode 11 reference!
I love how his voice lines are just like old text to speech programs, where they just recorded a bunch of words, then they get pasted together for each line.
19 years and people are still making videos about this game.
And now they're memeing the crap out of HL sfx...what a time to be alive!
0:54 I just imagined that Cave Johnson's relative works at Black mesa.
"super cool laser labratory"
wow. thats amazing
But It's still super cool

Wonder what those military personnel were thinking when they started hearing the continual EXTREME CROSS DIMENSIONAL MALFUNCTIONS, haha.
Wdym? They made the announcements.
Any chance of doing another one of these for the Black Mesa remake? I always though it was cool how they decided to change the voice of the VOX after the military takes control.
Great video btw!
Corey Mcdonough Glad life also changed the voice when under military command, it was just more subtle.

It’s actually supercooled but whatever
I've always loved the way the VOX announcer sounds,It's probably how spooky and sterile it sounds.
What I learned the computer voice had so many words and phrases, and then I learn how to make it say those words and phrases endgame, I must've spent like 10 or 15 minutes just playing with it. I love the way they did synthesized speech, in this game!

"I think that intercom said Turret Maintenance to Center Command. Yeah, I bet they have some questions. Like why are our turret guns killing everyone in the building?"

Thank you for the captions! They make this video so much easier to understand! :)
To this day, I still get chills from hearing these VOX lines..
Man, the announcement system is creepy! And the scariest line was - Message for Gordon Freeman, you will not escape this time.
True, ok the remade black mesa version is cool but the announcments didn't gaved me the chills, if you agree?
For a chapter called "forget about Freeman" this doesn't make sence.
5:47 I never noticed Dr. Newell on the wall before, in clear reference to the head of Valve Gabe Newell, lol.
The voice tone changes once the Military takes control over it. Little details like this is what makes Half-Life 1 epic
3:39 Problems Starts

My god, they've wasted so many expensive story parts
Thanks for this, i always thought this synthesized voice was a masterstroke of game audio design. Very sci-fi, oddly dark...just wonderful!
