Konami gets a 3rd party to make games for them. They don't develop games or even these remasters themselves anymore. They're just a publisher/IP broker handing out their IPs to studios that want to make something, like way forward with the contra remake or the studio that made the Castlevania Reqeium, Legacy and Advance collections. Heck, they would probably just hand over the Castlevania IP to IGA at this point to make the fabled 1999 game that he's wanted to make since the GBA.

This isn't "minimal work," tons of effort went into these collections like with the megaman legacy collection. The MGS collection is NOT a ROM dump, it's a legit remaster containing over half a dozen games. Plus Konami didn't make this, they're just the publisher. Konami doesn't make games anymore, they just hand out the IP to developers interested to make games or remasters for them. And the collection isn't full price, it's $50 in America and 5000 Yen in Japan. (100 Yen = 1 USD)

Correction, they made Snakes Revenge COMPLETELY without telling Kojima and one day while in the train home a dev working on a completely different project asked him why he wasn't working on the Metal Gear sequel. honestly in this case, i would want v1 to succeed since that would mean the people who refuse to emulate for whatever reason would be able to play the old mgs games, which could eventually lead to them being able to play mgs4 if v1's sales do well enough. and if mgs4 gets ported over to current gen platforms, then that means that the game will have a lot more accessibility on what platform you want to play the game, which will be good for everyone at the end of the day

Sure the collection isn't exactly definitive or premium but the truth is they're being officially preserved and that's better than having the games rot away on old consoles not accessible to modern audiences. Most people don't want to jump through 1000 hoops to emulate games from 20 years ago, which stops games as incredible as the Metal Gear Solid series from being passed on to new audiences for them to enjoy. 2. He assumes you have a gaming PC, that your PC is strong enough to flawlessly handle PS3 emulation, that you can source/rip all the games, and that you WANT to fumble around with menus in 3 or 4 separate emulators to get the games to run properly.
    3. 4K wasn't mainstream until after the final game of the series dropped in 2015, so why does it matter that the games' resolutions are at 1080p? The newest game featured here was originally released in 2004, THREE console generations ago.
    4. These games are ancient and the point of the collection is to preserve the games and have them available on (more) modern hardware. If you want 4K, 120fps Metal Gear, get the remake when it drops.

So for 3 first string games that’s a pretty fair price. In no way is that greedy or unreasonable. Other publishers/developers may release their back catalog at further discounts and overall better deals for the consumer but they are not obligated to do that. It's simple, because they can't be bothered to remake it themselves, and won't release the license to studios that will.

When I saw this, I recalled the story of how Konami fired Hideo Kojima because they favored releasing gambling cash grab games on mobile devices over expensive playable narratives like the metal gear solid series, or what silent hill was supposed to be until it was inevitably cancelled.
I can’t help but wonder if Konami is owned by yakuza at this point, since the yakuza was founded on running gambling rackets hundreds of years ago and still do it to this day.

@craigsampson3386 no, they aren't. Kojima would blatantly copy whatever he could from Western media while demanding that the games he worked on not be localized in any way because it meant that someone else could get a sliver of credit for (among other things) dialogue that was terribly written, and was an egomaniacal tyrant whenever he wasn't chatting up famous people or in front of a camera, all while expecting sole credit for any project that he so much as thought about *and* routinely operating behind schedule and over budget. At the end of the day, no company can afford to humor any single employee that much, especially when they think that they are the only person who matters and/or risk rights holders/other employees bringing legal action against the company. It's just proper risk assessment.

Ever since they fired Kojima ALL their games that have released since then have been crap, hence why they're mainly focusing on pachinko gambling machines, minimum effort and max profit off of gamers nostalgia using MGS to lure them in.
Meanwhile in about only 4 to 5 years Kojima managed to get back on his feet and start a new company, find a location for his company to start working at, find a new game engine to use (because Konami unfortunately own the rights to the FOX engine that KOJIMA made) and then make and release a brand new game in a new franchise, Death Stranding. All in about 5yrs.
Atleast Sony were smart enough to back and partner with Kojima.

You can't reach everyone and tell them not to buy something or how to spend their money. There's always going to be more people buy it than those who choose not to. Same with sports games there are way too many people out there who are still going to buy yearly sports game releases. Not me, but if that's how they choose to spend their money so be it. These company's have become so wealthy and so large not buying their games won't chnage anything because they all have their own fanbases that will buy them no matter what. If I could emulate the games I would, but the MGS collection is my only option so I'll be buying it because those games were awesome as a kid and I'd like to revisit them, as well as play the few I never got to.

I think the reason why Twin Snakes wasn't included is because Konami likely didn't think purchasing the rights from Nintendo would be worth it considering how it's generally considered to be an overall worse version of the original by the fanbase.
That said, good video. I was thinking of passing on this one and this only reaffirms my decision. Probably only gonna get Volume 2 if it actually has MGS4, because that's the only game in the MGS series I haven't managed to play.
Addendum: A point in MGS2 Substance PC's favor: there's currently a mod called "The Substance of Subsistence" that adds in the free camera from MGS3 Subsistence to it, built completely from scratch, to give you yet another way to play MGS2.

If you're aiming at an enemy and want to put your gun away, you will need to click L3, for example. One thing you really can't do now, though, is the pressure sensitive buttons that are mapped to your firearm trigger when holding a fully auto gun, such as an AK. That will fire relentlessly as soon as you press and hold square and there is no way to "aim" it without shooting like back in the day.

Especially MGS2 and MGS3 as they rely heavily on the ps2/ps3 pressure sensitive buttons. AFAIK peace walker and MGS4, you can play with a dualsense and still have a great time because they didn't rely on them as much or at all.

      @Dizzy-Luc 10 месяцев назад +2

For emulation, I remember messing with it on the Steam Deck before and having to look it up online and find a Reddit post on it (I forget the settings needed at this time), but there are actually settings to set buttons up for the "pressure sensitivity" options (to lower your gun in MGS2/3) as I remember that exact issue I thought of when I was thinking about putting the games on my Steam Deck. I just remember messing around with it (before resetting my Emudeck settings) where the Reddit post mentioned to set it to a certain percentage, and I could use one of the back buttons on the Steam Deck to activate it... actually makes it a bit easier than the pressure buttons cause I remember half the time not letting go slow enough and firing my gun anyways while holding up an enemy lol
The main issue I would say is that considering most standard controllers these days have the same amount of buttons as back then (while only a few have the "behind the controller" buttons... this would be one of those good times to have those buttons...) that is what would make emulating the pressure sensitivity harder sadly :/

They even rectified a couple GFX errors from bluepoint's original remasters.
The extras are extensive, and well in the case of MGS1; The Twin Snakes has a divisive reaction from the community anyway and is not an outright replacement for the MGS1 experience, just because you can't see Snake's crusty 240p face texture in HD doesn't really mean it's a scam. Konami has been upfront with all the details across platforms and I like that they're doing this and bringing it to platforms we can't play it on.

Agreed. A lot of hate on this product which just feels like "Hey, Konami put something out. Time to hate on it for the clout".
Are there things they could have done to improve it? Yeah, but then people would bitch that it isn't true to the original title.
Could they have added a little polish to sharpen up the textures without a full HD overhaul? Yeah, but personally from my gameplay it runs fine and honestly had no side by sides been posted online I wouldn't even have noticed given the upgrade from CRTs back when MGS1 first came out.
Konami is a shit company, I 100% stand by that, but that doesn't mean they can't put out a decent product and this feels decent.
Also agreed about Twin Snakes. It had a pretty big negative backlash when it came out due to being so over the top when the install base expected something closer to the grit of the original MGS (not saying MGS didn't go over the top in later games). Add in the licensing issue with Nintendo, and with the silicon knights chaos who knows if there might even be other rights holders at stake. Once you get other companies involved, it becomes pretty chaotic pretty quick. If they were going to bring Twin Snakes out, I would rather them just take the MGSV engine and remake the first MGS (though I don't trust Konami to pull something THAT ambitious off).

@@XVa-uj8m yeah I meant MG it's a bad habit of mine when talking about the series. Even though MG had issue on both the MSX2 and NES, it was very well meet with praise. But since Konami are greedy, they just went ahead to make a sequel calling it Snakes Revenge (which is not even cannon), to which they managed to make it worse than the first one. Giving it more issues than the first one already had.

  • @Dizzy-Luc

My only issue with not buying the collection would be that Konami may go "oh, the collection isn't selling, guess we shouldn't release Volume 2 with Metal Gear Solid 4 then" as while you do make a good point that, yeah emulating can be the way to go, it's not like everyone has a 4000 or even 3000 series graphics card that can run the PS3 emulator easily (the emulator says it recommends a 660 at the very least, but obviously the bare minimum will return with the bare minimum playability, while Steam put out a 980 is the "recommended" hardware, so it *should* play well on even low end GPUs... if Konami isn't lying)
But besides that, most casual people wanting to try/play the games won't go through the hoops of setting up an emulator, let alone have the copies to backup and play (as can't say to pirate the game, especially when a new version is "coming soon" and it feels like people say "just pirate it, the games aren't available anymore anyways" and then when a developer does come out with it, people advocate to pirate anyways)
Could the games be at a cheaper price due to being 20'ish year old games now? Sure.
But we are also coming from a time where games are being remade/ported and still being charged $60 at the end of the day.
Not to mention, I don't see much modding occurring on games that are emulated unless they are Nintendo games. It'd be a bit neat if the collection got people to mod the games now since it will be more readily available. (more people know about Steam than GOG... sadly...)
This is coming from someone that even owns Twin Snakes so it doesn't bother me as much personally, but I see why people would still get it. (... and while I like TS's control and camera scheme more, I hate that they literally took out the main alert theme from the game, replacing it with less exciting themes... there are more songs, but they just don't have the same feeling to them)

The RPCS3 emulator is more CPU dependent than GPU. This doesn't necessarily weaken your overall point though, as even people with powerful GPUs are going to struggle playing RPCS3 MGS games, as it still requires a powerful CPU.

    • @Dizzy-Luc
      @Dizzy-Luc 10 месяцев назад

@@centricthemedic1517 Yeah... glad you knew what I meant hahaha
Cause yeah, it's like how tech people make it sound so easy to emulate games, but at the same time, said tech people invest in those good PCs. (I mean Muta has a 4090, that is a GPU that less than 1% of PC users probably have, and he probably has the top of the line CPU too as well as other high end things, considering his job too) It's not like everyone has a powerhouse PC to run the emulators themselves (running SNES emulator vs a PS3 emulator are pretty different in terms of power)
Pretty much why I do get where he is coming from... but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of his audience doesn't even have the capability to run RPCS3, vs purchasing a $60 collection that *should* be more optimized to run on a PC. (but knowing Konami, they may not have even optimized it too since they couldn't even bother to make keyboard controls)
I'd honestly just wait for a review to see how well it played on PC if I was a casual player (and if you need an above decent PC too haha...)

Basically in order to get the Twin Snakes remake ported or re-released, Nintendo would be involved and iirc they would also get lots of money out of that. I'm sure someone else is more aware of what the actual deal is

Its amazing how much MGS fans flip flop between being super fans and super haters but just scapegoat Konami.
    “BRO JUST EMULATE THE GAMES”
MGS2-4 all have some level of issues with being emulated
First off. Good fucking luck emulating MGS4, RPCS3 is still struggling with the game. Yes, people have played it from start to finish but its so specific to your hardware in terms of settings your heads probably gonna explode before you get it running stably for like the first chapter.
Big ups Muta for citing graphical issues and jerking off MUH 4K 60FPS, but NOT citing the issues as a result of lack of pressure sensitive buttons. Good luck finding settings for Xbox emulators for graphical stuff if you dont have a DS3.
MGS2 also has issues being stretched to wide screen on the PS2 versions
This is not touching on things like audio issues and such from just… emulator shit. But 4k 60FPS fuck konami right?
Punchy has an amazing video on the discourse for this nonsense. Go watch that.

LOL its ridiculous. Perhaps they should have included an option to set window sizes to 1080p 1440p 4k etc. to play nicer with general desktop usage but as we've seen from this exact situation, people would probably gotten get mad anyway b/c they dont understand the difference between render and output sizes

There's also a huge red flag about Metal Gear Solid Delta which is the MGS3 Remake. Konami stated that the Remake will have the same voice lines as the original PS2 games. Besides the audio potentially sounding like ass due to being compressed PS2 audio, this is a red flag because this implies Delta will likely be a bear-minimum "remake" with nothing new added or changed.
It's highly likely that it'll probably be one of those "remakes" that only update the graphics and call it a day. It's probably not going to be a remake from the ground up. And watch Konami charging $70 for it. And people are going to buy it too.
