This is SO interssting. I'm front man in a rockband, and we're just tracking our debut EP - it should be mixed later this) month, and since none of us have ever been in a mastering process before (we're aiming at Spotify and Apple Music, plus potentially vinyl, I'm really listening now. Would you say that we migth as well use AI?
I would generally say use a mastering engineer if you’re serious about the tracks, AI is definitely interesting - and ultimately human or computer can be good or bad… at least with a human if you want them to adjust something you can put a request in to revise it and they’ll be able to understand what you want haha I’m not sure about AI mastering and vinyl, usually you need a separate master for vinyl I believe with a few parameters optimized for it. I you could definitely try AI 🤷♂️
Really great comparison. I agree with you. For me, Master C was the best overall. But to be truly honest, I was actually satisfied just with... an unmastered mix. I think you did a phenomenal job with it. Sounds just right and could have been released without mastering.
I would have actually picked C as the pro master, and D as Ozone like yourself. I also liked C the best, goes to show Ozone has a solid reputation for a reason.
That “nah I’m just joking” was hilarious! The video is playing in my truck, which has really nice souped up speakers. The bass / and low end bumps, probably a little too much to be a fair judge of what will sound best on most speakers. Master B and master D both made the kick drum slam super hard which definitely had a nice appeal. Both of those masters sounded more exciting than C to me. Master C sort of flatlined the drama. Either way, great song and you have an excellent voice! Nice job and thanks for the content man.
Haha thanks man, I always hate it when you watch blind tests and they never reveal the answers 😆 I get what your saying! I did like how master D added that extra excitement too. Glad you enjoyed the song too!
Dude just posting to say kwwp up the good work. Only discovered a vid from you yesterday. Now following and going through your older stuff, top work fella.
Thanks Edward, it is something I have been doing for a few people. I’ve been thinking about maybe adding it as an option to my store. But if you’re interested in something like that you can send me an email to discuss!
Very soon! I just need to update my mac 😆 I’m about 5 operating systems behind but it’s time to get everything updated again - meaning half of my stuff will probably stop working and it will take me days to get up and running again haha
I liked Master D and Master C the best - with the edge going to Master D. I liked the detail and space in D but it missed a little something in the low mids. C definitely felt warmer but maybe too much so - I missed that detail. If you took the warmth of C and married it with the detail of D, that would be perfect for me. As soon as B played, it was an immediate 'no' - too nasally. Liked the detail in A - but too much 'air' - it was just out of balance. If they pulled that 8k'ish area down a bit, it could have been my favorite. This was a cool video. Thanks, Rhys.
It’s always hard to come to a conclusion with so many options haha but I agree listening again later, D has a nice appeal to it! A middle ground of C & D would be a winner for sure!
I think Logic might now, but i need to update my mac operating system to download the latest version of Logic - I've been putting that off for a while now haha I'm most likely making the jump next week - pray for me.
@@spinlightstudios That's crazy man. I was working on a 14 song album but now i'm just gonna try to release 5 singles from the album and continue to finish the rest. I'm doing singles cause no one knows who I am and I want a little hype for the album first. I like music that doesn't sound like everyone else that's why I liked your song.
I liked a and d but im not bias because i didnt mix it the mix by the way was amazing to begin with but the point of mastering is to get that extra that didnt get achieved in mixing so i would want my master to clearly have the extra air and extra low end pop and extra clarity so chosing c wouldnt satisfy my spending the cash to get something extra and final only to have it so close to the original mix that i wasnt satisfied but im just a nit picky complaining artist so my opinions dont really translate lol for real though the mix was as solid as it gets
I think your mix is too well done for the test, LOL it sounds really good without any mastering and I feel most will be uploading a mix to these AI sites that is not in the same class as your mixes, so in that case I feel a human mastering engineer will make better choices then an AI ever can that's my opin. I listend on 2 dif sets of monitors and to my ears Master B sounds more compressed and I never like masters that have an over compressed tone as so many today have. You mix is def more open sounding and only needs some very slight tweaks. I liked the detail of A best but also liked C and D I am going to go with D as I really like the slightly added bottom end punch while maintaining definition that one gets from a nice mastering EQ. Just wanted to add my 2 cents. Now that I see the answer I am impressed with what the AI could do in some cases, but still would prefer having a human mastering engineer.
Thanks for this response! I agree with everything you have to say here :) perhaps we need to find a more problematic mix and do it again and see what happens haha
@@spinlightstudios Maybe, as I just feel that might be a better example of what these services can and cannot do as well in comparison to a good mastering engineer who may also have to deal with less then perfect mixes.
Whoops - There is a typo at 5:46 - 5:55 it's actually Master B (the blue WAV file is Master B)
Such a cool vid man! Thanks for testing for us!
No problem man! Thanks!

Master A had that hardware/tube kinda sound to it, but just a bit over hyped! Ozone is pretty decent!

Thanks, Rhys! Cool experiment.

Great video mate! Just curious, if I may ask if you offer mix critiques as one your services?
Thanks Edward, it is something I have been doing for a few people. I’ve been thinking about maybe adding it as an option to my store. But if you’re interested in something like that you can send me an email to discuss!
I've actually used Waves mastering recently and was very satisfied with the results.
Nice one. Online mastering can be hit or miss!
Id like to see a comparison like this that uses Strealiner or similar to simulate the way the track will sound on streaming services, esp Spotify.
Great vid, thanks! Do you happen to remember which genre the Ozone assistant defaulted to, and did you leave it as it suggested (e.g. pop, rock).
Thanks! In ozone 9 I don’t think it gives you choices for genres? I think I just select digital/streaming and moderate processing!
The Logic Pro mastering is really great!! You should check it out. Just curious, what did it cost to have it mastered by an engineer?
It was maybe around $130 I think
Would be great to hear your thoughts on the mastering plugin in logic.
Very soon! I just need to update my mac 😆 I’m about 5 operating systems behind but it’s time to get everything updated again - meaning half of my stuff will probably stop working and it will take me days to get up and running again haha
Definitely! I was just about to ask for this. Yeah, please do a review on Logic's new Mastering Assistant.
Beautiful song! ❤
Thanks!
wait wait wait, what actual ozone plugin is this and for landr as well, i wish you could make a follow up video on what exactly to choose
That was ozone 9! Hmm out of this one I think I preferred the ozone master!
@@spinlightstudios I mean am I looking for an exact ozone Plug-In or does the exact ozone plug-in in 9 has all of that feature set in it?
I’m not sure, but I recently upgraded to ozone 11 and it’s even better

Would be interesting putting us to the test as well 🙏
Man, you're talented
Thanks mate 🙏🏼
LANDR I have tried… like ten years ago, does Logic have a AI now. Ozone 9 I use to gauge to mastering level sometimes…

Ozone 11 came
Oh yeah, I just need to update my mac - still on Catalina haha
Waves Online Mastering does not require subscription. Actually, they do not have that option.
Yeah you buy credits
Good song. Sounds like your voice. Am I correct? Is the song available to listen to anywhere?
Thanks! Yes it is my song :) I haven’t released it anywhere officially yet .. one day haha
@@spinlightstudios Let us all know when you release it! 😊
Will do! :)
Hey man I want this song on my Spotify playlist! Where can I hear it at. I like it!
Thanks man! I actually haven’t released it yet 😂 been meaning to drop an album for the last 5 years that just sitting there basically ready to go 😅

Nah I wouldn’t use Ai for anything.
Well good for you.
