When I was struggling mentally, I went to therapy. My therapist told me that the first humans that there were had to walk to solve problems. If they were hungry, they had to go hunting/picking fruit. If they were in danger, they had to run. If they wanted to reach someone they had to walk to their place. Our brain is wired to walk to solve problems. So my therapist taught me that after each studying session, I should go for a short walk and look at it as "taking out the trash" aka help my brain process information and get clarity. Also, as someone who used to struggle with anxiety a lot, I was told by my therapist that our fight or flight response get triggered. When we go for a walk our brain thinks that we actually took action and calms down as we "walked away from danger". I used to do A LOT of walking back then. Thanks for reminding me to pick it up again!

This is such an interesting perspective, sounds simple but I haven’t thought about it that way. I am one of the millions of people (probably 😂) who always walk around when trying to solve a problem or make a decision/remember something. And I get my best writing ideas on my walks. Whenever I get overstimulated, I need to get out and walk around, too!

Former PE teacher/coach and hard-core athlete here...now a middle-aged walker. Motion is lotion! Walking is so good for our bod, but it also relaxes our mind and soothes the spirit. It is free... no equipment needed (a dog or a friend is an added bonus). We can choose to plug into sound or soak up the silence. There are no mirrors, coaches, skills or drills... all of which I find to be extremely liberating. Walking enhances self-acceptance. I feel cozy when I’m bundled up, free in my airy summer duds, and I love altering my pace... makes me feel fluid, graceful, strong and confident in my stride. YOWZERS... Immy... 25, 000 steps... you are a total champion... and as always so inspiring!!!! I loved this video and I am already looking forward to my after school evening walk. Thank-you.

I enjoy walking! I grew up in the countryside so walking in nature is my go to when I need to calm down. Since living in London, I tried to find a good place for my long walks and I have to say that the park where I live in Barkingside is unbelievably beautiful with its huge lake! I walk more or less 7km (going to and going back home) and it definitely gives me a lot of energy!

A friend of mine has a daily goal of 5,000 steps (medical reasons has meant that she has fallen into an extremely sedentary lifestyle and is aiming for 10.000 steps eventually but starting small). I have been meaning to walk/generally exercise more so we have decided to walk together at least once a week (I want to start doing 15 mins of intentional walking ((not in order to reach a destination but just to walk)) each day. I find having a friend to walk with has made me more inclined to do it.

Hi Immy, I consider myself more of a runner than someone who walks but due to my week joinst I was not comfortable enough to start again this year so I started walking and I would sometimes go for a walk that would turn into a 6 hour walk, walking over 10 kilometers. I now feel the benefits and so much stronger and can run again. Walking is amazing.

Does anyone know how cycling compares to walking? I cycle 10 miles a day so can't really find the energy to walk more after that! I know the mental benefits are similar, but I was interested in the impact on leg muscles etc and knee pain. Thank you!
Side note - as a mental health professional I can 100% support your claim of walking helping with depression. Doing 2x15mins of walking/physical activity a day has been found to be as effective as antidepressants in helping with mild-moderate depression. It also forms the basis of some forms of Behavioural Activation (one of the most widely used and effective treatments for depression)

I traded my bike riding for walking the beginning of the year. Since then I’ve been walking 6 miles everyday. The days that I can’t walk outdoors I walk in my house. When I have to walk indoors, I split up the time cause it’s not as fun seeing the same walls for so long. Haha!
I’m loving it. I did join a biking challenge for June so can’t wait to do that when the time comes as well.

I love walking so much! I use public transit and also walk a lot-using my body for transportation is such a slick way to get in exercise without even having to think about it. It’s also stress relieving and feels good on my body. I’d much rather do lots of walking and some yoga than high intensity exercise and my body seems to prefer it, too.

Forgot to mention in my previous comment... do you notice that other walkers say hello or give a casual greeting, and are friendly (even if English is not their first language)? And yes, sometimes I do have a phone chat with someone. I work as a caregiver so some steps are counted then as well. I walk everywhere, to work, to the laundromat, to the grocery store. I do live in a small City so that is manageable. I forfieted my car last year in February to become a full time pedestrian. I love being outdoors and I really disliked driving. I love walking! It's my favourite method of transportation when I have the time to do it. I live about a 20 minute walk from the subway station, so I walk to and from the subway in the winter time. In the warmer months, I try to walk all the way to or from work (almost 10k - it takes me close to 2 hours) once a week or so. I definitely notice that my head feels clearer and my body feels more relaxed when I've given myself the time to walk. I tried replacing my outdoor walks with walking on the treadmill at the gym and it's really not the same. It needs to be outside, and you need to feel like you've moved from one place to another!

Around my home the ice is about 3 inches thick and super slippery, so walking itself is dangerous for me right now. I really look forward to the ice melting so I can take mydog or walks again! Hi there... fellow Canadian here (Northwestern BC)... with the Climate Crisis upon us, we get weather extremes including everything from -40, massive dumps of snow, rain and the nasty ensuing SHEETS of ice. Years ago I took a horrific spill on the ice and narrowly escaped a major concussion. So, I bought a pair of the cheap ice cleats to see if they worked for walking and doing outdoor chores on our property. They worked great, but being the cheap ones I found they slipped off my boots occasionally. So I gave them to a friend and then I bought myself and my partner a pair of the expensive ice cleats from the Lee Valley catalogue. They are 10 years old now, and they are worth every penny (or should I say nickel?). They come in sizes to match your boot size, they are adjustable and they stay on, and best of all the studs are replaceable and I can buy extra studs at my local health food store. (I have only had to replace the studs once.) These ice cleats provide incredible traction, and I have not fallen since. I cannot imagine doing a Canadian winter without them. Maybe this bit of info is helpful to you... and if not, well... stay warm and stay upright.

But I find it very boring to walk as I soon get tired of walking along a main road to the next town. I am not familiar with my local area so worry about getting lost. Otherwise I just end up going to the one park we have which is just basically a big field next to a little river n that gets old very quickly doing circuits. I find listening to something to be very worrysome with regard to personal safety so I really need to find a solution.I love walking when I am away in places like New York and Paris and walk scary amounts and lose weight. Oh no, that little dog got it's sweater all wet, it must have been freezing cold when it got out of the stream.

If I run 8 miles in the morning I’ll still want to walk a mile or two in the afternoon. It saddens me how little people that live near me walk. We’re one minute from a co-op and people drive their cars there. I find it so bizarre. Use your legs!!
