      I have been decluttering for years now and have developed a mindset of value added. If an object doesn't add enough value, I won't keep it or buy it. I'm part of my local Buy Nothing group on Facebook, so finding homes for my unwanted things usually works out.
      My criteria for new items is very rigorous and includes ethics, sustainability, and how it fits with items I already own, so it can be hard to find a qualifying item even once I decide to make a purchase.
      I still have an emotional shopping problem when buying little things, so I'm doing a low-buy this year to get better habits in that area.
      One of my favourite tips, as a new parents, is to assign limited storage areas for toys and all toys must fit in there. We'll see how that idea pans out as my child grows!

    PERMA-HABITS FROM A MINIMALIST WANNA-BE:
    1. Keep the spice drawer under control (no purchasing one-recipe only spices).
    2. I have enough hair elastics & scrunchies to last the next decade, don’t need any more!!
    3. See-through containers only for storage so I can actually see what we have on hand and therefore avoid buying stuff that we don’t need.
    4. Books are not meant to collect dust. Donate them to the library so others can enjoy them.
    5. Sewing teacher to the rescue... I have the skill set, the mindset, and the resources to fix or repair just about anything. I am not always so thrilled to fix stuff for students and staff but it keeps damaged items out of the landfill... so I just do it.
    6. “No means No” in every facet of life and I have learned to politely say “No Thanks” and pass on stuff that I know I don’t really need.
    Loved this video Immy, thanks for all the good tips and reminders. I love your theme of following-up... great idea!! Also... this Tuesday/Thursday schedule is awesome. Love it!!

      So true about the spices! I have a square basket I keep my seasonings in, and if it doesn't fit in the basket, I don't need it, lol.

    As a 'recovering shopaholic' I avoid browsing through Amazon, etc, unless I really, truly need something. Minimalism has made me aware how insidious the buying urge is.

    I don’t practice this personally- but it may be helpful with the this or that method to deposit money with each idea. For example, if you want shoes, but decide that it’s better to have an experience instead, deposit the $30 for shoes into a “travel” or experience fund you have. And then that fund grows, while the stuff in your home does not!

    • @sarahsuero
      @sarahsuero 4 года назад +2

      Nina Chilbert I’ve done this! It’s a fabulous practice. My travel has expanded. Also I save up to purchase high quality items that’ll last 30 years. I’m not yet 30 years into an item, so, ha, we’ll see how it goes. 🤗 I’m 10 years into my couches and their going strong with minor fixes. Several wood furniture pieces are on their 3rd generation of use, grandparents handed them down. It speaks volumes to the longevity of solid wood.

    I LOVE the research and repair...I found a pair of very expensive boots at my local thrift shop ($550 new, I got for $30) and the sole was coming off. I took them to my local foot, leather repair shop, $10 later and they were as good as new. That was FIVE years ago and they still serve me well, I look after them and they haven't aged at all. I've stopped buying new clothes and footwear (bar underwear) I find with a bit of patience and a good rustle around, I can find excellent quality goods at thrift shops for a tiny price. I look at my journey as a journey of enlightenment, I am saving so much money and really discovering who I am. So many blessings to you, you really don't realize how channels like this help those of us new to this way of living xx

    I’m a recovering hoarder and I’m trying to implement more minimalist practices into my life. The 30 day thinking really helped me with talking myself out of buying new Fenty products that came out. I have enough and I don’t need more! By the time I’m done with what I have, I can use the 1 in 1 out to get something new.

    'One in, one out' rule is something I try to live by. It is hard to get rid of things, especially when you like them, but this rule makes me more conscious of what I bring home. I donate the things I no longer need. I have a nice family who uses my stuff and is really happy to take anything I want to give away. This way my 'old' stuff get a new life at a new and grateful home. :) Great channel. I've learnt so much from You. :)

    These advises resonate well with me. Before buying anything online (even not expensive) I give it a thought for a couple of days or more and sometimes I change my mind and save money.
    At one time I really liked experimenting with different recipes, so I was buying a lot of condiments, spices and powders, etc. and when I decided to use what I had - I have made a sport out of it and really enjoyed being minimalist in the kitchen from then on. What I didn't want to use, I give out on Olio.
    Minimalism especially helps since I have a very small kitchen and nevertheless I was able to fit a food processor, a juicer, a small grill, a coffee grinder and a blender in it :D).
    Instead of buying a laundry detergent I got a laundry ball which is good for about 1000 washes for £10-12. I use different coloured microfibre cloths for wiping dust, shoes, counters, bathroom etc. and wash them in washer once dirty.
    I remove labels from jars and re-purpose them: almond butter jars for spice containers; Nutella cup - for cotton buds; coconut oil jars - for candle making, jam jars for odds and bobs (like toasted slivered almonds, fermented juice leftovers, etc.)
    You don't need to buy a curler if you use a scarf method to curl your hair.
    Skin lotion can be used as a face cream as well. And non harsh soap (like Faith) as a face wash and feminine hygiene soap, and it lasts longer than the gel would.
    Using menstrual cup saves on the amount of pads needed and adds to the feeling comfort and safety.
    Instead of buying a hard copy of books I sometimes opt out for a Kindle version to save on space.

    Repairing things has changed my spending habits a lot even though i am not a minimalist. RUclips is a great ressource for repair how tos. I have repaired so many different things that i never would have thought possible: shoes, furniture, kitchen scale, jewelery. My best repair job: my expensive DSLR. A 5 bucks screwdriver and 2 hours of working (and watching 😁) time to save 100s! Honestly, everyone should try to repair broken things. They are broken anyway so whats there to lose?

    I have three pairs of leather boots from before my vegan days. They are all in excess of 8 years old and have been regularly cleaned, re healed, re soled. I have probably spent more on repairs than they cost me in the first place but I have not had to buy new boots for years and probably won’t need to buy new ones for many years to come. People often comment on one pair and ask where I got them, they are quite disappointed when I tell them they can’t get them any more!

    I really want to become more aware of what I do and buy, but I find changing the mindset it the hardest part of it. For example when it comes to clothes, I'm quite strict on what I wear which makes it really hard to find clothes second hand. Maybe I should just visit second hand stores more often. I find this video very helpful, but as a teenager sometimes I feel as though these types of habits are out of reach. For example, I haven't really found my style yet and I have been working on not buying as much, but with the fact that I'm still growing and that my sense of self is ever-evolving, I feel really guilty about buying new clothing. I'm just having a hard time figuring out how minimalism fits into my lifestyle and how I can better find a style that suits me. Any tips would be very appreciated! :) thanks

    • @Adelaideanegg
      @Adelaideanegg 4 года назад

      I am a teenager myself, and I don't think a style s something you choose in a big picture way. I just choose the clothes I think I'll like wearing (Usually plain t-shirts and pants) And I feel comfortable in them :) I've found that letting go of other people's expectations of what I should keep such as the expensive baby shower gifts I had but didn't really want. Also, think about why you want to de-clutter. My goal was to have a relaxing bedroom space with no piles, and plenty of room to dance around in if I wanted to. It eventually evolved. I've found I enjoy watching the minimalists podcast, so give that a try :). I hope this helps in any way :D

    • @rsdxxxx
      @rsdxxxx 4 года назад

      Take them to a tailor or cobbler, or even get a friend/kind stranger to help teach you how?
      Pulling from personal experience it's worth giving the above options a look! My brother took a heavyweight backpack with it's shoulder straps falling off to our local cobbler, the job of sewing them back on took a couple of hours and cost £20 - 1/3 the price of a new bag the same. I took two pairs of shoes to the same man, one to repair the soles and the other to replace the worn away inner heel - the combined cost of both pairs brand new was probably £200, combined cost of repair £40!
      It's always worth having a look around your local high street, or even asking in Facebook groups for your area if there's anyone willing to help or knows someone :)

    • @SustainablyVegan
      @SustainablyVegan  4 года назад +7

      Great question! There are several things I do: 1. I try to upcycle them myself so turn them into rags to clean my house or turn them into bags I can use to bulk buy. 2. The charity Shelter will accept usually unacceptable items at their kings cross branch, so getting in touch with charities before donating can be a great way to find out what's possible. 3. My local council dump offer a zero to landfill recycling system so I can take them there. 4. Accept that you've gotten the most out of it possible after repairing etc and send to landfill and find a way to be more sustainable in future. There is only so much we can do with the systems we have! So just do your best
