    Amazing! The engine doesn't sound muffled by the turbos or anything. You get all the benefits of torque and tuning that a biturbo setup can accommodate with no sacrifice in sound quality. That's so hard to do. People don't realize just how hard it is to make a turbo V8 sound like this, where it's not just all exhaust but a good amount of engine noise. It's EXTREMELY challenging to say the least.

      Everyone here is incorrect.The 5.5 BiTurbo was modeled off of the M278 that was introduced in 2012 (2011 for the CL class). The M278 is a 4.7L BiTurbo V8 that is featured in the 550 models. AMG took the M278 and increased displacement, changed the turbo, and other things. But if you look up the actual images of the engines, they are almost identical on the outside.

    Dear oelhayek, The M157 produces up to 571 Hp and 900Nm of torque with a maximum of 6500 rpm. In this test scenario the engine is tested across all gears and all rpm ranges to verify that it runs according to the specs.

      ... On the otherhand,repeated coldstarts, are another way to push an high-prefomance engine to it's limit. Preformance engines are developed to "stand the stress,during warm conditions"... reapeated warm-up cykels" are a different task" for a high-preformance engine... After all: Im sure that the guy's at Affalterbach has an inhousedeveloped acceptance criteria for coldstarts as well....Nicht's wahr ?

    Mercedes-AMG is the new 5.5TT an evolution of the M156 - reducing displacement and improving performance, emissions and efficiency through use of valley mounted turbos? Was any portion of the M156 blueprint able to be reused or was it at least in part an influence upon the new design, albeit the 6.2 couldn't possibly survive new emissions standards, turbos are the only way forward for the petrol engine and thankfully shorter intake lengths, smarter computers and the ability to have very high compression nowadays has made turbos viable in an age where sluggish responsiveness and slow spool up are unacceptable, but these factors which affect the modern car industry aren't the fault of the M156 engine, it was the final evolution of a dying age in the motor industry and a high tech monster in it's time... it's still a monster of course, but can't be regarded high tech today...
    I guess my question is really does any element of the engine live on, because we know it isn't always necessary to completely re-tool an engine assembly line whenever there's a new generation, and doing so would be prohibitively expensive to bottom line profit, so whilst I'm sure a great many components were improved upon, turbos and computer controlled electronics are external components and relatively easy to implement compared to scrapping everything and starting over with new knowledge. Where possible one would continue to use components that still serve the function well.
    I hope I've explained my question well, I understand for PR reasons you may not be able to answer that question, but if we disassembled the new 5.5TT to the floor, and the M156 to examine every nut and bolt in the engine assembly, would I find this engine to be an evolution using many of the same, only a few, or no components whatsoever meaning it was necessary to completely engineer a truly all-new engine?

    • @Mercedes-AMG
      @Mercedes-AMG  9 лет назад +16

      All Mercedes-AMG engines fulfill the same standards in regards to reliability.
      The requirements for newly developed engines are both varied and demanding: Outstanding performance and a wide usable engine speed range, a low power-to-weight ratio and sound design, a low specific fuel consumption and exhaust emission values, ease of maintenance and pedestrian protection. The primary development goals for the engineers and product strategists at Mercedes-AMG GmbH were dynamic responsiveness, great agility, exhilarating liveliness and a high torque even at low engine speeds.

      The ML63 made 2009-2011 I think use 6.2L @ 518HP. The newer models use only 5.5L. The problem with this is the torque is like gone vs 6.2L making the 0-60 noticeably higher. The 1/4 time is indeed faster but due to the more hp probably due to more PSI let through at the wastegate. Also the MPG went up but the low-end power doesn't compare because at lower throttle the 6.2L should indeed be more responsive. I mean, that's probably made up with the throttle curve position adjustment but that's cheating.

    • @Executiveinvestments-
      @Executiveinvestments- 6 лет назад

      Anthony Abelardo what? and what? The 2009-11 ML63 is a complete dog compared to the newer 5.5 bi turbo ML. The low end power dosent compare? What? The 5.5 has way more low end. Its night and day. The 5.5 is way more responsive than the 6.2. The 6.2 is only 503hp and 465torque. The 5.5 is way underrated. Dynos have showed around 575hp and 625torque. MB claims 550hp and 560torque. The 5.5 is a major upgrade.

      true, but they are usually NA engines.
      the turbocharger is "absorbing" a lot of the exhaust energy and lowers the gas temperatures alot, thats why the pipes don't glow
      besides, the less glow you see the more efficient an engine is, since it means that it converts more of the vhemical energy of the fuel into kinetic energy instead of thermal energy

    So what Temperature does the Turbo back downpipe reach during full acceleration? Reason I'm asking is because I want to order after market downpipes and ceramic powder coat them. Thx

      Daniel Matjasic will never get close to that hot. Only in this environment where there is very little airflow to cool the exhaust. On the road you would have a ton of air at speed.
