Billy lying back and letting the Russians hold him up is extremely powerful. A reassurance of trust seemed to sweep the crowd as his back touched the fingers of those people.
Dude honestly im sure it exists and if anyone knows tell me but thats the earliest crowd surfing ive ever seen. I means hes giving a thumbs up at the end its clearly not normal and they didnt know how to handle it lol
No , he doesnt. Thats my friend Pete on the right side; he says Billy uses a pre recorded backing track ( from the original album recording) when performing it today!
@Jonathan Rose Well, discuss that with the man who Billy hired specifically to do those parts in the studio. He lives about a half mile up the road from me. His name is Pete Hewlett.Thats him on the right in this video. He's credited on the albums, he was there. He tells differently. Let me ask, did billy sing the high parts on "Innocent Man"? (oh, to answer your question, Billy does use live backups usually of course. Pete still does occasional shows with Billy and told me he thought it was amusing to find a digital copy of his backup vox from "Longest Time" (meaning his original parts from the actual album sessions) are still used if needed (equipment, personell. etc).
@Jonathan Rose Let me ask him. Hey, it wouldnt be the first time I was confused! And sorry if I seemed belligerent. If I got it wrong I will gladly retract everything i said because I hate misinformation. Now I really want to sort this out, if only just for my own clarification!
Scott Stetzer Not to barge in here....but I absolutely am in awe over how good that man (Pete) can sing! His cover of An innocent man with an accompanying keyboard player is at a next level talent! I really hope his work one day becomes available on a cd or some kind of digital format because I will buy 10 copies and pass them out to other true music lovers like myself! And as far as the friendly little argument goes I don’t think Pete recorded vocals for the actual album ...Liberty said that there was a team of people that contributed background vocals for songs like uptown girl and I’m guessing longest time ( not entirely sure how that one worked out) but it was at an overnight recording session in the studio when most of the band wasn’t even there...But Pete Hewlett along with George Simms were touring vocalists. That’s my best guess...but I may have the whole thing mixed up.
I wasn't alive then, but I think you have to keep in mind the historical context of this. It's a powerful warming of US - USSR relations, but the moment where Billy starts to get away from the stage actually incites genuine fear in the band. I don't think it's that they don't trust the crowd, it's that they don't trust the fact that there might not be some angry fanatic in the crowd who might take the chance to put a knife through Billy. When I first saw that part I thought it was kind of a cute moment, but I think you have to understand that the band was genuinely afraid of what could have happened. Obviously wonderful that it ended up working out.
The teen jumping up on stage at the end, not only NOT being carted off, but being encouraged to join in by the roadie, was totally awesome! And, yes, I so applauded hard after he was brought back onto the stage. Thanks, Billy, this song was an instant classic when it was produced in 83, this clip made it even that much more.
I’m honestly shocked at how physical and scrappy of a performer he was here, I always pegged him as the self-serious type who just stayed at his piano. But he’s running around, doing handstands and playing with the crowd in a way that feels like he’s genuinely having fun and going for it. Fucking around like a rebellious kid, way more rock and roll energy than I ever expected from him. Especially later on when he gets fed up with the lights being pointed at the crowd, all he cares about is those people having a good time. It’s not about him or his ego.
I absolutely love this guy. Just watched a two hour doc about his going to the USSR in 87. Man Billy Joel ended the cold with American Rock and Roll. What a fantastic story
Вот оно - единение двух миров... Спасибо вам за эти легендарные выступления и за доверие! You can see a Union between two nations right here... Thank you, mr.Joel, for your love, energy and devotion!
What a fun performance of this song! The CROWD wanted to take him away! the BAND had to grab his hand and bring him back! !!! such LOVE on both sides of the (imaginary) border. LOVE you BILL JOEL and BAND !
3:19 what ever you say man love it Billy Joel is one of the best performers of all time and his music never gets old and no matter who you are and why genre of music you happen to like we have all heard one or more of his songs an American icon for sure love you Billy keep rockin
Regardless of the present situation in Ukraine we will create a peaceful planet. Before change can happen the chaos emerges then more and more good hearted leaders and people stand up to create change. We are at that crossroads right now. Hope, courage and determination are the strongest part of humanity.. All people in their hearts desire peace...Culture is the heart of humanity.....It bonds us all on the level of common humanity. Thanks you Billy (who by the way went to my high school)
I dislike that a great amount of footage was still left out from this time period. Many songs were left out from the blu ray reissue concert. I was waiting to see "Stiletto" , but they edited out from the setlist.
TRUE...but...I actually LOVED it. He was ON THE ROAD, giving it his ALL, BJ and his band were EXHAUSTED and yet the crowd was literally "carrying" him! Perfection is a myth. THIS is the ultimate performance!
He said: “Hi, my name is Dima”.))) And Oleg Smirnoff (Billy’s entertainer) took him and said: “Dima, you're in the way»)) An amazing case. Usually at rock concerts, the security is harsher, and the fans are more violent. And here everything is kind.
That moment when the Soviet Union nearly stole Billy Joel.
I'm sitting here, laughing my ass off, as the band tries to retrieve Billy from his crowd-surfing excursion!!
it was great, his background all making "bring him back" motions with their hands and fingers...
Not to mention that he never missed a beat through the whole journey.
Crowdsurfing the USSR, that's punk as fuck. And the kids intended to hold him for the longest time.
Billy lying back and letting the Russians hold him up is extremely powerful. A reassurance of trust seemed to sweep the crowd as his back touched the fingers of those people.
lol...Russia fingered Billy!
There did seem to be a slight moment of panic when he started getting away from the stage.
Billy audience surfing. Did he check for his wallet afterward? Always wondered that.
@@kevinnelson66 it was in Russia, not USA or Britain
So you would say... It's a matter of trust? :^)
How the heck he kept on singing through that, a true performer!
i've wondered that for years!
I have no idea you don't understand how hard that is
Dude honestly im sure it exists and if anyone knows tell me but thats the earliest crowd surfing ive ever seen. I means hes giving a thumbs up at the end its clearly not normal and they didnt know how to handle it lol
I still cant get over that he sings every part in the original recording. Fantastic :)
No , he doesnt. Thats my friend Pete on the right side; he says Billy uses a pre recorded backing track ( from the original album recording) when performing it today!
Scott Stetzer he IS talking about the original recording

Guys guys you can put me back on the stage. Guys. Yes yes to the righ- no no no MY right gUYS ON STAGE HELP MEH
"Whatever you say, baby!" That was a REAL American.

Yeah! And Billy's polite "Get down, feel good!" in response :)
Any Russian in the house to tell what he said?
The ‘roadie’ was the translator.

Russia still remember and loves you, Billy! Thank you for everything✌😊
"I have been a fool, a fool for lesser ALRIGHT!!!!!!"
“I can’t believe I did that” hilarious
"I can't believe I did that!" I am so sorry I will never get to witness mr.joel like this
What did he do??

Security!!! 😂 there is no way that would happen nowadays. What a fun performance though!:)
Not the first at all! This was already done in the 60's
Go wiki :) stage diving...
Ain’t it ironic how Billy started singing the part that goes “I had second thoughts at the start” the same time he wanted to go back on stage?
Coincidence?
I absolutely love this guy. Just watched a two hour doc about his going to the USSR in 87. Man Billy Joel ended the cold with American Rock and Roll. What a fantastic story
Fun.With.Guns well, I’d say other stuff was involved
Oh please no, but it was nice
That's hilarious when he and the band started panicking.
I know right !!!! 😂😂😂. Я люблю билли джол, он токой смешной
Crowd enters debate whether they will steal Billy Joel or put him back on stage. Tug of war ensues.
Billy never misses a note during the whole thing.
Вот оно - единение двух миров... Спасибо вам за эти легендарные выступления и за доверие!
You can see a Union between two nations right here... Thank you, mr.Joel, for your love, energy and devotion!
US: Billy Joel!
USSR: you mean OUR billy joel, comrade!
What I wouldn't give to be in that audience.
Awesome live performance of a truly amazing song. Great crowd participation 😂🙌🏻
What a fantastic musician you are Billy🤘🏻
In Soviet Russia, Crowd surfs you. :)
He is the greatest musician that did not care about politics and just loved people.
Mark Riviera saves the day with a sneaker grab! Haha..and Billy never misses a note!
yeah, thanks mark, that coulda been bad 😭🙏
Билли, по любому, нигде не испытывал такого кайфа!
The background vocals are also very on point

Nobody can sing and harmonize while being carried on his back by his fans and without missing a beat. Well, that’s talent.
Perfect Pitch OMG AWESOME ! !
That was by far the best and most entertaining live performance i‘ve ever seen
It seems like one of the greatest moment's in the modern music history. Such energy is going on there even through the video!
That's cocaine for you!
I got to see billy live in Seattle last month one of the most incredible shows I've ever seen
I was there too, with my son and my grandkids. It was fantastic! I think I'm going to see him at Wrigley Field in Chicago in August.
You are still the best. From Sweden with love.
Great song! I really loved it as a kid.
Wow! A 5'5, 38 year old Billy Joel!
the worlds first crowd surf. and in the USSR. what a legend
A music artist who unlike many reached out to his audience and fans. ❤
Oh shit. This a for real Punk Rock show. Fan participation is the key.
OMG !! He flopped into the crowd !! Thatz epic !!
One of the best moments in Dima's life 3:18
This is what makes Billy a legend. I wish I was around when he was in his prime performing. They don’t make them like him anymore.
That had to hurt his throat bad :(
This is one true song that never gets old and I never get tired of it ❤❤
Love how the people singing with billy on stage were part of the music video
Haha! Turned out to be very funny, you're great BJ!!

How come he still singing so good at that situation? 😂😂😂
Nah he's not in the best form here
@@oliverdelica2289 True but he's still singing better than a lot of artists could in that same position.

Great performance from my fav Joel concert of all time. The thumbs downs are probably from the KGB. Haha.
What a great voice Billy Joel has live, i had no idea until listening to this. Great performance, great musician. Love this.

why is no one talking about the guy that came on stage at the end and how they let him stay LOL
Not a centimetre out of harmony even as they struggled to retrieve him.

haha, immaculate isnt it. his voice only broke once that whole time he was lying down, probably shit scared. what an absolute legend
Later at 1:47 you can see when the crowd decided to not return Billy to the stage.
Those young people may easily been American kids so we're not so different after all.
Can anyone tell me the names of the 4 lads that’s are doing the backing ?
Mark Rivera and Richie Canata are two of em. I think Peter Hewlett is one of them but no idea who the last guy is
