- My Armenian mother would often choose Khachaturian’s “Lullaby” for a bedtime piece after tucking me and my brother into bed. We grew up in a small village in Nepal, and it was magical to listen to the piano in the living room mingling with the rhythm of crickets and cicadas in the forest outside.
A few years ago my mother was practicing the piano indoors while I practiced a North Indian classical rāg outside, while visiting our relatives in the Adirondack mountains of New York. When she began to play the “Lullaby” I had the sudden urge to go in and join her. This recording is the result of that experiment.
To experience her playing the original piano arrangement by Oscar Levant, you can visit my mother’s own youtube site here:

Wonder who in Nepal was your sitar teacher. I myself took my first lessons in Kathmandu from the renowned Sitar virtuoso Tara Bir Singh?
Hi Prabhat. It's great to hear from you and to learn a little about your sitar background with Tara Bir Singh. Actually I first began learning sitar at boarding school in Mussoorie UP, though my home was in Gorkha district in Nepal. My first guru was Ajit Singh, a master of the vichitra veena.
Dr. Hale is Armenian?? How did this Armenian girl never know this??
Hi Aylin! Yes she is Armenian.
Praise the lord
