Funny, I too am brought to tears each time I hear this beautiful discussion. As a former high school physics teacher, I used to play this at the year to my classes. Most sat through politely but probably didn’t take much in. But I’m sure every now and then a student would get a little of that “Feynman Inspiration.” Luckily, I usually would play this with the lights dimmed after perhaps showing another video clip…so I could hide my tears. ☺️

The wiser individuals among us by contrast, I have found, tend to be more thoughtful and taciturn. We may be entering a period of history where that pattern must change to avert catastrophe, though. It may be well past time to become louder and braver.

Those who leave room for error and doubt are surely the more worthy of trust, but those with a deluded self confidence can imbue their nihilist conduct with powerful "certainty."

But then he'll say, "I, as an artist, can see how beautiful a flower is. But you, as a scientist, take it all apart and it becomes dull." I think he's kind of nutty. [...] There are all kinds of interesting questions that come from a knowledge of science, which only adds to the excitement and mystery and awe of a flower. It only adds. "The scientist has a lot of experience with ignorance and doubt and uncertainty, and this experience is of very great importance, I think. When a scientist doesn’t know the answer to a problem, he is ignorant. When he has a hunch as to what the result is, he is uncertain. And when he is pretty darn sure of what the result is going to be, he is still in some doubt. We have found it of paramount importance that in order to progress we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Scientific knowledge is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty - some most unsure, some nearly sure, but none absolutely certain.
    ~
Now, we scientists are used to this, and we take it for granted that it is perfectly consistent to be unsure, that it is possible to live and not know. But I don’t know whether everyone realizes this is true. Our freedom to doubt was born out of a struggle against authority in the early days of science. It was a very deep and strong struggle: permit us to question - to doubt - to not be sure. I think that it is important that we do not forget this struggle and thus perhaps lose what we have gained." -Richard Feynman, The Value of Science

He marvels into floral depths in rapt exploration of the beauty of flowers all the way down to their astonishing beauty at smaller, microscopic dimensions. There's something comforting about watching this, and I don't just mean listening to the Feynman interview. Seeing that there are so many other minds who think the same way and get an enjoyment on watching this reassures me that I'm not alone in an intellectual sense.

"I don't feel frightened about not knowing". Nice summary. I suppose Mark Twain holds some degree of responsibility for this idea that knowledge of a subject destroys aesthetic appreciation. He wrote as much in Life on the Mississippi about becoming a River Boat Pilot. But then his own writings belie this idea.

Thank you for putting beautiful imagery to these beautiful words. Feynman and Sagan had a way with words to describe science and philosophy in ways that only truly passionate men of science and understanding could bring to light. Their understanding and ability to simplify and explain the world and science is a true credit to their names and memories. The world is a better place for these men. May they not be the last true poets of science and understanding.

I am training to become a science teacher. Every night, before planning my lessons, I watch all 4 of these videos. It's not really time I have, but it lifts me no matter what has happened today, or the classes I will lead tomorrow. If my teaching could have the effect on one child that Richard Feynman's has had on me, then it would all have been worthwhile. I'm not looking for 'likes' or anything like that. I just want to share my appreciation for a wonderful video and a great teacher.

This video describes so well my outlook on the world and I admire Feynman for being able to put it so eloquently into words. It's been a while since I saw this video and it was gratifying to hear a person talking reason and sense. I've been boarding to do my studies the past 6 months and the people I'm staying with are creationists so going to a talk with Lawrence Krauss recently and seeing this video again have been good for me. Thank you, Mr Feynman.

His views didn't involve with silly religion, but the religion of "Beauty" and that's better than any church seminar I've ever been too. This man had a gift with words, and I wish I had the capabilities to express what i feel as smoothly as Mr. Feynman did :)...
