I no longer go on a diet and I cancelled my gym membership…January 1, 2022 at the age of 60, I weighed 240 lbs…I was disgusted with my physical fitness. I had been doing the Shampoo diet (lose, gain, repeat) most of my adult life so I changed my mindset. Instead of going on a diet, I decided to change my diet. Instead of living to eat, I now eat to live. I watched a lot of RUclips videos on the Ketogenic way of eating. I started eating two meals a day and after a month, I switched to eating one meal a day. I also began walking every other day. In June, I had my doctor do a blood test. It was the best test results ever. It’s now January 1, 2023…I’m 61, I’ve lost 50 lbs, with the guidance of my doctor, I have eliminated 8 medications (I’m drug free) and I now walk 8 miles every other day. I do have a day or two a month when I splurge (cook a Chef John meal or eat ice-cream, pizza, Chick-fil-A…) but I really have changed my diet. I have eliminated temptation by only keeping food I should eat stock in my house. If I want a treat at night, I make it difficult by having to get in my car to drive to Publix for ice-cream or peanut M&Ms.
I've seen Barton Fink and appreciate the reference... Having said that, and considering the conclusion of Barton Fink, they're definitely coming for you!!😆
For my homemade sports drink, I prefer apple juice because I use it on my long runs and OJ can be a little harsh out on the trail. I love your energy bar recipe!
i know its cliche, but i really wanna do my best this year to lose weight. with hypothyroidism its really hard, but every bit of information and recipe and everything is another motivation. good luck to everyone whos doing the same! stay determined

Thanks for planting that seed in my mind which led me to to either give up ever having artificially flavoured vanilla products again, or going in search of beaver butts to harvest my own... Happy new year.
Imitation vanilla is definitely one of those farm to table ingredients you hope you'll never have to gather yourself. (leastwise because you might acquire a harem of beavers who like...donating? Volunteering?)
Is there any reason for the cayenne in the bars. Not that I'm complaining lol I love adding cayenne pepper to everything but whats the purpose here :) spicy chocolate ? 😋
Let it be known, Chef John, that I know the truth behind where artificial vanilla extract comes from and I'm still more than happy to use it. I am the villain of my vanillin.
Don't make the same mistake Anheuser-Busch made by messing with what people come to your channel for... Granola Crème Brûlée? Tofurky Jerky? Water Packed Tuna Bars? Really!!!?

Fun fact: cooking foodstuffs helps make their nutrients more bioavailable to our bodies. We lose some vitamins depending on the cooking method (vitamin C is destroyed by heat), but in general cooking makes food better.
chef John I love all your videos and your quirky comments. I absolutely love it all, but can you please fix the link to the energy bars. the link you provided to your blog says that the page doesn't exist. or at least it does for me. thanks for everything.
I can't say that the sports drink part is great. Talking about health and then adding calcium. Calcium is important, but you shouldn't take it in supplement form.
Just want to say that these bars are only healthy by certain standards. Dates are basically sugar, and coconut oil is a saturated fat. Also nuts are very high in fat. So yeah, the nutrients and fats etc. Are good for you, better than a candy bar, but in terms of calories they are quite nuclear. They are basically sugar and fat. So I personally would rather eat a few dates and almonds separately, that way you can control your portions much better. Just think about what your actual health goal is when you choose what to eat!
The steak and egg: the. Steak and sauce look wonderful but I don’t like the metallic taste of fried eggs with the brown edge and bottom. I would have thrown that egg away.
So cool! The energy bars are exactly like the famous RX Bars, which are $2.00 a pop. But they contain 12g egg white protein each. You can add that, or any palatable protein powder you like, so it has a better macronutrient balance. Again, I love your channel Chef John!✌🏽💚
Thanks for this video! The timing was perfect. I’m just getting in to cooking healthy desserts. I can’t wait to try the donuts. One thing, search RUclips for bad cooking oils. You’ll never use “Vegetable Oils” again.
I am so intrigued by the spicy mango sauce. The link to the full recipe is dead and I assume that access to a 2011 recipe is not part of my member benefits. Any ideas how to get quantities, or should I just fool around and figure it out?
I hope all is well with you and Michelle during all this flooding happening there, I'm from the East Bay Area San Leandro originally have since moved away, but I still have family and friends right there and in SF. Praying for no harm and safety to life and property during this time.
'Tis the season for health food, low calorie and low carb videos!😂 My local market sells a version of this; they're about 1.25 per bar. I was going to make some last week with crunchy nut or peanut butter, dates and cocoa, but the dates...um... the amount in the bag kept, um, you know... shrinking. 🤷 Thanks & Happy New Year Chef John!
I always peel any apple I eat. I very much dislike apple skin. I'm not sure why. I finally found a basic apple corer and with my trusty peeler, those two tools make peeling and coring and apple very easy! The corer is nice if you want to make a baked apple and stuff the core with butter and brown sugar and bake at 350 for 45 minutes. The butter and brown sugar will melt in the oven and make a delicious sauce that can be spooned over the baked apples. My mother would make those for us so we could have dessert even when the budget was tight! Happy cooking everyone and Happy New Year! Healthy donuts? That's a food sin! hehehehe just teasing! Thanks I will save this recipe for the fussy / special eaters that I meet in my travels!
I have discovered coconut oil! I use it in most anything that needs oil now. I bought it to make snowy mooncakes and so I made them multiple times in multiple ways. Then the jar sat on the counter while I cooked all week and instead of getting the other oils out I used it for all things except frying. I don’t know what will happen if I fry but now I have an air fryer and soon I will find out. Also I made purple potato skin mooncakes with purple potato white chocolate filling.
Let the diet ads and gym adds begin.
Add is what we do with numbers.

Only ads I see is domino's pizza ads the worst pizza ever 😭

I agree with Michelle about the chocolate ships on the donuts, I will leave them off when I make them!

Chocolate energy bars was the first video of Chef John I watched and immediately loved the channel.
Hello Chef, the recipe link for "Chocolate Fruit & Nut Energy Bars" is broken. Is there an alternative link? TIA
Fun fact: cooking foodstuffs helps make their nutrients more bioavailable to our bodies. We lose some vitamins depending on the cooking method (vitamin C is destroyed by heat), but in general cooking makes food better.
I'm disappointed the opportunity to say “You're the Raquel Welch of your raw kale salad” was missed.

Fitness? Maybe not a subject you should be touching.
Most of Chef John’s Recipes are bad for our health…Sugar, bread, rice, potatoes.

May I suggest you fry plantains in butter? What a difference such small detail makes...
Ah, John...you are a goofball & a great chef. 😄 How about a bit of sliced bacon in the kale salad...not too much tho.
Can't believe the Cheeseburger Wellington didn't make this playlist.
Some of your recipe links aren't working. The energy bars for example.
Why does dried fruit add sugar as compared to fresh? I dehydrate my own fruit so there shouldn't be a problem?
If I enjoyed the assassin episode, why wouldn't I enjoy the nuts one, vegan roasted or not. ; -)
Nice try with the sports drink, but the acidity in the citrus is going to react with the calcium and magnesium.
What did momma-cat say to the kitten
“Play nicely with your food darling”
Oh no! The link to the Chocolate Fruit & Nut Energy Bars does not work!
I have a question.
Why are the onions sauteed first instead of the carrots/celery which are harder?
the recipes for the plantains and the beef jerky weren't working either. sorry
Like the other two fingers can get dirty so how come that other finger can't get dirty
Cholula isn't Louisiana hot sauce, it's Mexican hot sauce. 😛
Could you do a pemican video too?
