2:26 YES, it feels like literally no one else acknowledges this. His constant beefing right after that album came out was the real catalyst for people (including myself) changing their minds. MGK needs to learn that rock fans nowadays usually don't value the same kind of personalities that rap fans do. A bit of humbleness would've gotten him far
People in rap don't like random beefs either. Like yes if there is a real reason go for it but just out of nowhere beef for attention is lame. That is why shady bullied him out of rap.

The thing with the "name 3 songs" is that if you like one song from a band, then you can't necessarily say you are a fan of the band You can say you're a can of the song But that shouldn't stop you from representing the band
I think a better " test" would be "what's your favorite song," and if they pick a song that wasn't released as a single, then they prolly listen to full albums. Like someone can say they like Metallica, master of puppets, nothing else matters and One. Doesn't exactly sound like I listen to the album(s) those come from even tho I can name those songs. Of course, I think if someone spent money for merch then that is fine no matter how many songs they listened to or if they listened to everything and a single is still their favorite. Just think the three songs was always so silly, that's my point lol.
I’ve been listening to some bands for nearly a decade, but if somebody came up to me and asked for three song titles, I’d panic and draw a blank. Imposter Syndrom.
I'm more of a believer of "if i don't like more than three songs on an album, i don't like it..." same goes for calling myself a fan of a band. I gotta like the majority of their albums rather than one or two
My brother in law had an extra ticket to their concert in Nashville last month(same week as Knotfest Roadshow which was an amazing show) and asked me to go. I hadn't heard anything really from them since Pray for Plagues/Chelsea Smile, Count You're Blessings/Suicide Seasons so that's what I was expecting as I really enjoyed those albums but had'nt kept up with them. Boy was I ever wrong. He deliberately didn't tell me just how far removed and poppy they sound now cause he knew I wouldn't have went lol. As soon as they started playing I'm like wtf is this shit dude, are you sure this is the same band, this the stuff my wife listens to and come to find out she does like them currently. I've never seen such a dramatic transformation in style within the same "genre". I waited the entire thing hoping they'd play at least ONE song I knew from their old stuff to no avail. Needless to say I couldn't stand it lol but good on them for changing so dramatically and finding success cause the place was PACKED. I did see plenty of Count Your Blessings and Suicide Seasons shirts despite them not having anything from that era at the merch table. I wish they would play at least one song from the era at shows though cause it is their history and what made them famous originally and I'm sure plenty of their fans would appreciate it.
About earplugs, I agree, but I think at some point, we need to have a conversation about the loudness in concerts. If everyone has to wear earplugs, what's the point of setting everything as loud as it is?
I absolutely agree. I love loud music, but I will never understand the reason for playing music so loud that you can barely distinguish any tones. Most metal concerts would go just as hard at half the volume.
Can’t everyone just respect that everyone has different music tastes and hang out with people that have the same tastes as them if it bothers them that much? It’s not that hard
Jonathan Young made a good point when he was criticizing the metal community for being too afraid of being called gay to try anything new. Guy made a laser pirate power metal album entirely with synthesizers and it kicked ass.
The band shirt thing is seeing someone wearing it and you try to have a conversation with them, it gets awkward , worse if you introduce them to a song or two and they shit talk it. It feels like they are shitting on your taste.
I think one is 'not everyone will be into death or black' I think some metalheads look down on more palatable genres like gothic or symphonic because they more popular.
About the changing music part. It's about balance. Don't keep the exact same sound, but when you do change it up don't stray so far that you sound like a completely different band. Evolving is good, turning into a completely different band all of a sudden? Bad.
Lol absolutely. I gotta say though, that new album is hard to listen to for me. Just sounds so generic and "Stone Sourish" to me. I was a big fan of their last two albums, but that new album is my least favorite since AHIG. After hearing what Jim Root said about it being rushed and the writing process, it makes a lot of sense.
@@kizuato2073 I think maybe they were just so ready to be done with that label, they just said "fuck it, release it" lol. Hopefully they release some quality stuff without a label pulling strings now.
I think all of us wish our favorite bands stuck with the style that made them. Bands far too often evolve into something we wish they didn't. But when they do and it's wildly uber amazing, it feels so damn good. Meshuggah is my number 1 and every album hits like a 60 ton machine. And i get fangirl about every release
I’ve seen people complain about both bands changing their sound and keeping it the same. Before Ire a lot of parkway drives fanbase complained they didn’t change their sound, then as we know today a lot of those same people complain they changed their sound. Same thing happened with the amity affliction before misery came out. People complained when they didn’t change up their sound but again a lot of those same people complained when they caved in. Basically if you’re in a band there’s no winning
it's because bands are allowed to change their sound but ONLY in ways that a particular fan likes, if they want to do their own thing and have fun in "unacceptable" ways, they'll get dragged
@@elenuvien Yeah and that's also the thing, A band can't simply just ask one fan what do they want to hear because then the other 100 if not thousands of other fans are gonna ask the same thing and we'll let's be real bands aren't Santa Clause so they can't make it happen.
Never had an issue with parkway before IRE but Amity I was already over the sound they started to overdo in Chasing Ghosts, like my least favourite song on Youngbloods is literally Youngbloods and they started to implement that sound more and more each album, so if anything they had a pretty natural progression, just a really bad one in my opinion
Yea and even if people gon say "they are just the copy of the band" they are still giving a nice hommage to their inspirations and thats a really nice thing to see !

I'll never complain abt a band not sounding the same on every record. August Burns Red get this criticism a lot, but usually from ppl who never liked them in the first place, from my experience. If anything, most fans I've talked to are thrilled that they're not taking the PWD/Architects route and instead staying true to their original sound.
Eh, I've tried to vibe with em but the issue with ABR is that they usually don't do vibes/melodies in their songs. Which makes it spoken word more than metal.
The thing about bands changing their sound is that their new sound is usually way worse than their original sound. It's usually more dumbed down and commercial and or just plain bad. I can't think of a band off the top of my head that stayed consistently good despite changing their overall vibe, but I'm a bit picky so this may not apply to the general public.
Some people don't need ear protection. I remember being able to touch the speakers at a Slayer/Hatebreed concert 20 years ago and always have exceptional hearing test at work. TV ruined my eyes though lol
I like Poppy and if Baby Metal is acknowledged as Metal then I say Poppy can too. I also like when bands change their sound to a certain extent like that's why Ice Nine Kills, Avenged Sevenfold, and Linkin Park are tied as my number one band you never know what you're in for with new albums because they change it up but also keep their defining features. Also as someone who grew up on Classic Metal and Rock I do find Riffs and guitar solos very important for me to love a song but I also think lyrics might be the think I value most.
I've been to shows where they didn't have an encore, they did however mention during the last songs "this is the 2nd last song, no encore", then....this is the last song...and they lived true to it. It worked out okay that way.
I have to disagree with the MGK take on this video. Nobody in the metal scene loved MGK. He was loved by his regular fans for his hop hop stuff. My personal dislike as well as others actually started when he attacked Eminem on a song and I'm sure other metalheads would agree with me as well. Then he got even more hated when he made the switch over to the rock scene and taking shots at other artists. Not saying you're wrong but from my perspective, he was never loved by the metal scene Edit: Forgot to mention he made immature and weird comments about Eminems daughter on Twitter. That's another reason why fans including metalheads don't like him.
was looking for this comment and wasn't disappointed. he's an insufferable person in general who thrives off attention, negative or not. i just don't listen to his music because giving him attention is exactly what he wants.
The earplug gripe... I feel like I'm the only idiot who wears them at a concert. I went to a Devin Townsend show in Prague. The sound in the pit was so loud and sharp I saw a bunch of people cupping their ears. I handed out 5 pears of foam earplugs to whoever asked for them.
I see so much heat and misplaced angst aimed at Lorna Shore for releasing the "same song over and over" and I never agreed with that sentiment. It's their style and they remain true to it.
I think the name 3 songs thing does ring true a little. It's like, you're a metalhead, you see a person in the street wearing a shirt of that band you love, you;re stoked, you want to chat with them. Then they know nothing about them. I think it's like sports fans seeing someone wearing a jersey of thier team, you talk to them, and they say, oh I don't watch sports.
MGK made Tommy Lee endearing. Being a metal head means I get to go to shows for 10-20 dollars. Perks. Also, my son played me a song from Pantera the other day, and I knew it was the first track from Cowboys from Hell. Still can't remember the name haha. Chanting one more song is typically to allow the headlining band a breather for the closer. Lorna Shore just did that recently. My son was lucky enough to get a set-list. Editing more: DO NOT see Angelmaker without ear plugs.
about the one more song one.. total agree. EXCEPT when the venue has a strict curfew... when i saw Bullet For My Valentine several years ago at the Roseland Theater in Portland Oregon, they had started the intro to Tears Dont Fall part 2 and the house lights came on cause venue curfew .. so its disappointing when they dont get to do so
the 3 songs thing is also a bit dumb seeing as most people use streaming services now and don't even look at the titles. but would recognize it if the songs played
"One more song " is never going anywhere I JUST SAW SHADOW OF INTENT IN CHICAGO AND WE DID THE EXACT THING AND THEY PLAYED MALEDICTION My neck was swore for a week lmao

Some bands have a very distinct sound which people love. You can have variety in the songs but they'll still have their sound. S great example of that is Bury Tomorrow. Their new stuff is different but still feels the same.
8:14 - 8:40 Absolutely true. I hadn't listened to Dance Gavin Dance for even a full year before their bassist died of a drug overdose, and then Tilian was metooed. This is just one example of the many good bands that do stupid shit and cut a good thing short and ruin it for fans with their behavior.
I listen to alot of albums all the way through (it's kind of a litmus test for whether I would consider myself properly a fan or whether I only 'kind of/sort of' like a band). So, if an album has no filler, I never need to skip. If it doesn't have one absolute banger that stands out against all the other tracks I never have a reason to check the song titles... I can name most albums by a lot of bands.... I'd probably struggle with song titles though...
I had recently watched a couple of videos trying to understand my tastes in music better. This was a mistake. While I enjoy metal, trying to attach myself to a particular subgenre is basically impossible. I'd be like taking a gradient of Red and Green and saying "Find me where Red doesn't have any green in it" and then having everyone come to a consensus. Better yet, a crimson and Red gradient. Ultimately, I ended up with this: 1)is it theatrical? 2) can I apply it to a movie scene? Fight scene? Emotion? If it's a yes to any of these 2, I'll probably enjoy it. It's probably why I really like video game metal music like Doom and Metal Hellsinger. Just ticks all those boxes.
The MGK hate train got old really fast. Also I remember in 2019, where I went to see MIW. Didn't bring any ear plugs and was sitting very close to the stage but not close to the pit and it sounded like a machine gun going off in my ears. It was fun as hell but holy shit! 😬 my ears wouldn't stop ringing for a few days and I had to wear ear muffs. Always bring ear plugs, trust me it ain't worth it. 👍
For sure man, happened to me at a slash gig. Don't even like Slash and they were ringing for a week. If you keep doing it, there will come a point where your ears never stop ringing.
Oh man, I was at Rammstein in September on their stadium tour and was close to the stage and my ears were ringing for two solid days after. Was worth it to me, was also my first ever concert !

On the RUclips bullcrap you mentioned yesterday in stream: Don't beep the swearing, cut the audio. Ad analytics puts you into "kinda not ad friendly" category.
Riffs are most important IMO. With the exception of certain extreme vocals, the riff is what makes a song memorable. Sabbath, Rush, etc were so good partly because their riffs were sticky.
6:54 When I saw Tremonti live this year, as they were approaching the end of their set, Mark said “We don’t do encores, theres no point” and I love that, because he’s right. I hope other bands start to see that, but at the end of the day it’s probably up to them, and if they want to do it. Then do it.
Funny thinking back now about Larrs and how he tried stopping online audio file transfering.. But looking back, that whole ordeal created the copyright we have today and made big enough a noise to form the online trading of music we see now. His originaly concern was 100% fair for all artists, even including the big names.. artists don't really make good money via album sales and getting less hurt so many smaller artists.
I'm in my 50s, I never wore ear plugs at shows when I was young. I am now constantly followed by a swarm of Cicadas everywhere I go. Don't be dumb, wear your ear pro.
one of the times I saw dope live Edsel literally came out n said, 'yeah we can do the encore thing where we walk off stage y'all chant for us to come back n we waste your time. or we can just play one or two more songs in the time frame'. n I respect that
7:02 OKAY, not metal, but this happened to me this year! I was filming Country Concert in Fort Loramie, Ohio in July, and Morgan Wallen was headlining the final night. Drunk people threw stuff at him, he was mad about something else, and during his set skipped a song, then left and didn't come back on for this 3 SONG ENCORE. I was so confused, and it gave me a bad first impression of his live shows and his character.
I really like Nik's nuanced approach to MGK. Also, in terms of bands not changing their sound, I think bands in certain genres can get away with it. Barely anyone complains about Rise Against, Breaking Benjamin, or August Burns Red not changing because those genres they're a part of (Melodic Hardcore, Alt Metal, and Metalcore) allow different bands to do the genre their way. Meanwhile, if a band that is part of pop punk (like a band called State Champs), for example, were to stick with the same formula, some people would likely get sick of it pretty quick.
The "new bands sounding like classic bands" one probably refers to Greta Van Vleet, who I'm not a fan of, but I still find it weird to complain abt a new artist sounding like something you like I'd hardly call The Halo Effect an example of this tho, since it's literally just a new lineup of the group of ppl who created that sound in the first place.
I like Slayer, I like Zombie, I like Testament. Alex Skolnik from Testament is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! Chuck Billy from Testament is a unique singer, but Alex MAKES THE BAND to me, as a guitarist.
So what if the crowd didn’t chant one more song? Would you as a band member be excited to go back out and pumped up. Bands love crowds cheering for that.

I believe in separating the art from the artist. I still love MGK's I think I'm OKAY and album Tickets to my Downfall, as a matter of fact, forget me too with Halsey was my most played song on Spotify in 2021. I saw Motorhead as my first concert ever. Was deaf for 3 days afterwards. Thought it was because of "virgin ears" and saw them again many year later. Nope, not virgin ears, they cranked the volume beyond the limit. Man it's just a wall of sound (a giant HISSSSSS) if you don't have hearing protection in. I always wear hearing protection going to shows now, but it's kind of sad how I lost some of my hearing because of them (have done hearing tests through work).

The thing with the "name 3 songs" is that if you like one song from a band, then you can't necessarily say you are a fan of the band
You can say you're a can of the song
But that shouldn't stop you from representing the band

I'm not a Metalhead, I love anything and everything, but love watching you and Tank's channels to have fun and learn. Keep being you 🔥

Jonathan Young made a good point when he was criticizing the metal community for being too afraid of being called gay to try anything new. Guy made a laser pirate power metal album entirely with synthesizers and it kicked ass.
Cynic and Death both had half of the members be gay at one point. In the early 90s. Not really new lol
The band shirt thing is seeing someone wearing it and you try to have a conversation with them, it gets awkward , worse if you introduce them to a song or two and they shit talk it. It feels like they are shitting on your taste.

I think some metalheads look down on more palatable genres like gothic or symphonic because they more popular.
About the changing music part. It's about balance. Don't keep the exact same sound, but when you do change it up don't stray so far that you sound like a completely different band. Evolving is good, turning into a completely different band all of a sudden? Bad.
The “when bands change their sound” portion must have been written by Corey Taylor himself
Lol absolutely. I gotta say though, that new album is hard to listen to for me. Just sounds so generic and "Stone Sourish" to me.

Not saying you're wrong but from my perspective, he was never loved by the metal scene

I literally only listen to Welcome Home by Koheed for the opening rift then turn it off so I’d say rifts can definitely make a song
Just ticks all those boxes.

i am so happy that bands aren’t as big. less stadium tours, more small venues, cheaper tickets, more shows.
