I really like the one I have. It works great for carving wherever you want. I’ll bet if you don’t want it you could sell it for way more than you paid for it on the secondary market. I bought mine for $65, 7 years ago. Today they are over $170 for the updated version.

Good idea!!! I would live to give the updated version a try, others have noted it is much improved - but $170 😲. Thanks for the advice! 👍✌

I was looking at these for my walks through the greenbelt in our area so I could just take a break and do a quick whittle while sitting next to the river. I couldn't bite the bullet with the price so I grabbed a Ozark multi tool from Wally world and modified it to do what I needed for a 10th of the price. Granted it's a bit bulkier but it does the trick.
I also found a small lunchbox cooler for a mobile go pack for when I'm traveling. Stuck my strop, extra pair of gloves, my beaver craft knives, detail gouges, a few blocks of basswood and mini first aid kit in it. Now I can escape from the stress of the world for a bit wherever I go.

Monika, sounds like you have the perfect on the go whittling kit. Very cool! 👍✌

I love mine ! The idea of this tool is that you can throw it into your pocket with a small block of wood and you have a small carving kit in your pocket that you can pull out and carve anywhere , is it as good or as comfortable as your single bench carving tools , of couse not . but it is a convenient tool for spontaneous carving when away from your carving bench . nice to have after you have the basic tools that you really need .Yes it is expencive and is a bit of a luxury tool .

    • @WhittlingWoods
      @WhittlingWoods  Год назад +2

Absolutely - I can see the benefits in terms of carving on the go, but personally my choice is still the basic pocket knife for "mobile" whittling. Thank you Clare! 👍✌

@@WhittlingWoods yes of course we all have our own personal preferences ., and its good we do or we wouldnt have the variety of carving tool choices we have , I too would try a a basic carving pocket knife if i could find one at a reasonable price here in Canada .thanks for your return comment , I appreciated that .

FYI, Old Timer has a $25 folder that is very similar called the Splinter. I love mine for using while sitting in the camp chair on camping trips. I use a little lansky pocket sharpener with a diamond rod to keep it in shape.

    Great video, thanks.
I have this knife but have not used it a lot yet, but I am going to.
I like that I can bring all the tools in one small package.
This is not going to replace the individual tools I use at home, but that is not why I bought it.
They do have a new improved version, "The Carving Jack 2.0," and they updated it.
They put washers in so the blades open one at a time. Plus, new all aluminum contoured handle scales. Also switched out the chisel for the new "Pelican blade" that has a good curving whittling blade.
I am not going to up grade as I like the chisel.
But I am going to purchase the new improved "Spoon Carving Jack 2.0". They have added a new Pelican blade onto the knife. This changes it from a three blade jack to a four blade jack knife. Plus, they also added the new aluminum contoured handle scale, too.
The price on the new Carving Jack 2.0 is a little cheaper than the old version. I think it is because it does not come with any of the extra strop stuff.

Thank you. I heard that Flexcut came out with an updated version, very good to hear! I used to do quite a bit of spoon carving, one day I have to get back into it. Stay well! 👍✌

The palm chisels & gouges have always been the whittling / woodcarvers supplemental tools & are best left off of folding handles !!! the original multibladed folding knife for woodworkers , was & still is the different variations of the carpenters pocketknives !!! When I say variations , I am referring to different back spring configurations as well as blade combinations , specifically with the minor blades that appear on these folding knives , that the master carpenters would employ in the coping of inside joints on trim moldings within the structure they were doing finishing work on !!! It is all power tools now days , but once upon a time , way way back in the day , the entire coping process was all done with hand tools , with the carpenters pocket knife played a major role !!!

@@WhittlingWoods Oh I have 19 knives already. Flexcut, OCC, Helvie and a set of miniature detail knives. It would be nice to have one knife to take long but from what I see, the Flexcut is not the one. Thanks again for showing it.
