Woofer VS Subwoofer

  • Some people messaging me have been wondering whether the woofer I have would be able to replace my subwoofer, the one I use for my home theatre etc, so I tested it out.
    The specs of the woofer would suggest it isn't made for this, but obviously I'm going to "be dumb" about it and test it like I have no idea what specs mean.
    Also it might help to have the correct size box for the speakers in question and not do a 'one for all' type thing like this.

    `the folded surround on your woofer usually means it is more of a mid bass for larger rooms. The fold does not allow for as much excursion of the driver but maintains better control.

      my unclu has folded surroundings in his double 18 inch woofer and they can reach 24hz with no problems and no ratteling so you can use folded surroundings plus they are quality woofers not woofer to use for pure bass

    doing my usual sunday zig-zag thru a neighborhood looking for flatscreens and stuff, i found an Infinity PS_10 on the curb,, i asked the guy in the yard if it worked.. he said "not really". so i pulled it apart and changed a 16v 330 uf cap, with and upgrade to a 25 volt and it sounds great... now if i can get the floorboards and walls to stop the rat-eling noises i'll be in business. and i snagged a yamaha a/v reciever{rca plugs} i need to test out. but the best part was the sharp remote control i've been needing for the 70 inch flatscreen a friend delivered to my place{free} that basically just needs internal adjustments in the menu, which works better having a remote. i tried it a few times without the remote, but everytime the power was interupted, i had to reset the adjustments.

    • @bobbygeiser8478
      @bobbygeiser8478 5 лет назад +2

      The car subwoofer is designed for smaller enclosure sizes, with the output compensated with more power.
      The PA subwoofer is designed for larger more efficient enclosures, to get the most sensitivity per watt as possible.
      Any comparison regarding sound quality or frequency range will vary on a sub by sub, and/or enclosure by enclosure basis.

    • @williamkillingsworth2619
      @williamkillingsworth2619 5 лет назад

      The big difference is efficiency.
      Pro audio 18’s like Peavy lowriders have 97.3b sensitivity. 4 inch voice coils with tighter gaps, a cone that weights 198grams and handles 800con/1600pro/3,200peak Cost $225
      A sundown zv5 has a 88db sensitivity. 3 inch coil 450gram cone and handles 2000watts rms. Cost $1000
      It will take the sundown about 3 times as much power to produce the same SPL. Because it has a heavy cone and a less efficient gap.
      The Pro audio sub will sound better, and be louder dB/watt vs dollar spent.

    In brazil woofers made for 60-120hz can trigger car alarm more easily than subs, Not to mention that you feel the bass from afar, since the subwoofers you go 10 meters away and you only hear the voice.

  • @CoolDudeClem
    @CoolDudeClem 5 лет назад +6

    Back in the old days you didn't need a sub, most stereo hi-fi speaker systems could cover the entire frequency range without needing help from a sub. Modern woofers are crap and don't produce much bass at all so they need help from a sub, but old-school Woofers (70's & 80's, even some of the 60's ones) easily could go all the way down to the frequencies that modern subwoofers produce.

    If you crossbreed a woofer and a subwoofer, you get a superwoofer so you can have nice mains speakers that subwoof in addition to woof, squawk, and tweet. It will have a very similar design to a competition car subwoofer but, with a cone stiff enough to cross it over to the mids at 375Hz or higher without distortion and a shorting ring for accurate upper bass so you can have single woofer floorstanding speakers that have a lot of excursion, deep thunderous bass, and no distortion in the upper bass frequencies.

      @@Assistingalways I have a party speaker Sony MHC V 82d and it has 12" woofer. It shakes the room and outdoors it produces huge bass. So in my case the woofer wins over the sub in producing bass.

    • @Assistingalways

      Rajib Lochan Panda yes. But it's between subwoofer and a woofer. Some frequencies are only audible based on the enclosure tune, and the excursion of the diaghragm. So generally subs will go very low depending on your room to. But woofers are for spl. Minimum excursion with massive enclosures that beat box rise. If you want good quality music subs will do. But if you want to listen with your neighborhood to, woofers will.

    There both LF drivers but the 'woofer' Is more for PA use as it has better efficiency because of its lighter overall cone design, with the high impedence lighter voice coil. The PA driver will have better sensitivity and the Car sub will have a much higher power handeling but also much less efficient. The Car sub will also have a much lower FS and will play lower notes (below 40hz) alot louder.

    Good pa subwoofers go above 150 hertz without trouble giving much nicer more open surround sound, these car type subwoofer barely hit above 100/150 hertz
    In a car it can add a wide soundstage to. cost more energy tho cus most of them probly be above 4ohms.
    Anyway what im trying to say is that those type of pa subwoofers are kinda like a very good woofer that goes extremely low plus semi woofer (sorta like a better done version of a logitech "sub"WOOFER! :D)

  • @katzinc1971

    No standard woofer is made for SPL whereas Subs are built this way. No comparison is really needed if you know the specifics or ratings of the speakers. 8▪Ohm Woofers generally start at roughly about 80hz and finish up to maybe 5khz (low range/bass and voice). Now, 4▪Ohm subwoofers can start as low as 10hz, yet they might reach up to a maximum of 100-150hz (subsonic bass)
    Midrange speakers can range from roughly 3-4khz up to anywhere about 10-12khz (Vocal range)
    Tweeters can start somewhere about the 10khz range and go all the up to 22khz (High end quality)
    So when using a Woofer, Midrange and Tweeter, using a crossover network, all of the spectrum should be covered....the Subwoofer will fill in down the bottom end of the spectrum giving you the punchy feeling in the music

      Wes Spannagle , a drivers impedance doesn't indicate its range of frequencies. Higher impedances tend to help the driver control the cone better, but at the cost of the amps ability of potential power output.
      Not really a big deal with lower wattage drivers. About 80hz and up in a home setup up 8ohm drivers are common. In car audio you will find 4ohm drivers of the same range to be typical.
      Subwoofers are the ones that need substantially more power. That's why the lower impedances are common.

    All speaker type's have there pros and cons tweeters woofers subwoofers mid range wide range full range all speakers are made for different jobs but you people have your opinions facts are facts opinions is wut you like and wut you don't like but if you say woofers are better than subwoofers then that's your opinion it's coffee time and it's time for me to relax good day.

      The subwoofer most definitely can produce lower frequencies, deeper bass. I only listened on a $100 portable Bluetooth speaker and could still tell the difference.

      Sry i was being a bit sarcastic... a sub woofer will play lower bass than a woofer... yes that's why it's called a SUB-Woofer...

    • @bubbab89
      @bubbab89 5 лет назад

      Woofer is actually a mid-bass and subwoofer driver, it's not solely dedicated to sub bass. That's the only difference between the two. Sub bass is any frequency between 20-80hz.

    Put a 4 inch or 6 inch driver in the box , not for a serious video but for some quality lols

    • @MyStonerMind420
      @MyStonerMind420  5 лет назад +4

      I was thinking about that, but I'd have to place the speaker onto some wood and fasten the wood to the box too.
      Unless I can hover the speaker over the 18" hole cause I have no wood lying about. I don't fancy drilling more holes into that SMD box though.

    Will that box was design for subs. Build a box exactly for woofer, so the frequency can be increase. Beacause here in philippines we actually use WOOFER in MODIFIED CERWIM VEGA (MCV). Some user of MCV use instrumental because it has hard kick bass.

  • @Justwantahover

    My standard woofers are sort of usable as a sub cos they are so fat (unlike your PA "med" driver). But I'm using the $50 Jaycar woofers as stereo speaker standard woofers and even at fairly low volume my 10" woofers were excurting like 1/8" with that low bass note and I could feel it move with my hand on the cone, with that low note (not too many hz). Now how do you get a camera mic that good? Wow!
