Choosing an instrument is an important and special time for a musician, but often they don't know what instruments are available to them and what each sounds like. This video walks through all the brass instruments, giving information and a quick demonstration to help a player decide what fits them best. Remember, every instrument requires considerable and consistent time dedicating to practicing to develop on. Pick something you'll want to practice everyday!
If you play a brass instrument, let me know in the comments!
    Happy practicing, everyone!

Facts about each instrument from the video:
    Tuba:
    Biggest brass instrument
Plays the lowest notes out of all brass instruments
    Change notes by pressing valves
    Takes a lot of air
    Euphonium:
Miniature version of a tuba basically
    Plays counter-Melodie’s in band
Same valves as tuba but an octave higher than the tuba
    Trombone:
Uses slide to change notes, not valves
Plays in the same range as the euphonium
    Prominent jazz instrument
Can play extremely loud or very delicately
French Horn: (I play the French horn :D)
Goes from harsh and blaring to mellow and smooth
Very challenging instrument as you need to master the different registers
Previous music experience helps with this instrument
    Often played in movies
    Trumpet:
Plays the highest notes in the brass family
    Most recognized
    Plays a lot of styles
    Often heard in ensembles
Must play like a confident person

I started playing trombone this past March (2021). A couple weeks ago I started on trumpet, and I'm having a lot of fun playing them both, enjoying the differences in tone quality as well as the different ranges. I play other instruments, too, mainly clarinet and string bass, with the former being my "original" instrument which I started in 4th grade (60 years ago!) and latter as I started my high school years, but I have always had an interest in learning to play a brass instrument. There are so many wonderful choices available, and it's best to start with one to learn music, and then learn to play others later if you want, but it's also fine to stay with only one if desired.

For the past five months, I've been really enjoying the trombone and it's the first instrument that I've ever played/picked up. I had a few playful teases by my family saying it sounded like farts when I started since I didn't have good lip control at the time. (even puffing my cheeks) the teasing almost made me change instrument to the french horn or clarinet but then I realized how much I really enjoyed playing it. Right now I'm struggling with high notes and playing for longer. My highest I can go witout souding like a dying goose is a B flat and sometimes a B and I can play for 2 measure and sometimes 3 1/2 or 4 measures depending on the tempo or how much I practised

TIL with the help of this video that I play, for concerts, a silver Yamaha Standard bell front Euphonium, yknow, the ones most people would probably use for marching (It even has a slot for a marching stand!). I love my baby. :)

    Hi Mr. Alex,
I am a flute and piano player. I am thinking of playing the Trombone before Christmas or before I turn 15. And I'm also doing grade 4 flute this year. I am wondering what would happen to my flute embouchure when I play the Trombone. Will it affect my flute embouchure or not?
    Cheers

    • @notyalc.
      @notyalc. 2 года назад +1

i dont think it will be a problem as long as you practice both instruments consistently. i used to play alto sax before i switched to bari, but sometimes when i get bored i go back to alto and i have to readjust my embouchure to get comfortable on the alto again. then when i go back to bari it feels a little weird and i have to readjust again. but that’s mainly because i dont practice alto anymore. so i think if you practice switching back and forth between the instruments, you’ll probably get a feel for the differences between the embouchures. i know sax is different than flute so it may be different between flute and trombone. if it helps i did try trumpet for a bit and it didnt really affect my sax embouchure (but i did give up on trumpet so idk). anyways, i’ve probably rambled on too much but that’s what i was thinking, hope it helps

    • @a-mazur-ing
      @a-mazur-ing  2 года назад +1

What notyalc said is true! If you’ve watched my videos obviously I play them both and have had no trouble. I used to be afraid of the same thing but you shouldn’t be worried! If anything, trombone will come easier since you already know how to use your air to produce sound. Go for it!
