There's a thing I read about trumpet where after somewhere around high g, the notes are not determined by the valves much, but rather the backbore and lead pipe coupled together. Credits to Nick Drozdoff... I think this idea is similar to what you mean.

I think G5 is really the highest note you can truly get to resonate on trombone, everything after that is just your lips doing all the work

I can play up to the D natural at about 5 minutes (barely) and comfortably played the Bb below it the other day, this is super impressive.
