An excellent overview of the components of Marvin's sound!
Thanks so much, Kenneth! I really appreciate you tuning in. I agree, Hank is phenomenal, isn't he? If I could sound even a tenth as good as him, I'd be over the moon. It's truly astonishing how much intricacy and nuance the great players bring to their performances. Every time I study their techniques, I'm blown away by the depth of their skill.
Marvin is a master of the melodic guitar .
Seriously!
Really helpful! Often heard about th etape echo machine and the heads and so on, but this is the first time I have properly understood it! Thanks for taking the time to explain it.
It’s pretty cool Isn’t it? Glad you found the channel:)
Such a beautiful sound. I can still remember the chills when I first heard the opening strum and the first notes of Apache
Did you see them back in the day? Very cool
Great review, again learned some things which are very helpful in a life long chasing of ‘That Sound’. What still amazes me most is that Cliff and The Shadows were really young when they ‘invented this all. Already then Hanks playing and sound was totally unique in so many ways with so much detail. . They invented what many of us spend a whole lifetime even coming somewhat close in just copying that. By the way, without having to rob a bank one can actually get pretty close these days. I do love my Squier Classic Vibe 50, VOX AC10 and the faithful Yamaha Magic Stomp with Shadows patches. For less than 1K it gives me instant and constant Shadows fun.
Cheers from one very happy Shads nut 🎸from Holland, Michael
Cheers!!
Incredibly interesting and helpful ! Thank you for sharing !
So glad you found it. Thank you!
So interesting. I think I'll get the Volante.
Thanks a lot for the overview
Enjoy
He changed his name when he was hungry, so he thought, 'im Hank Marvin' ......bingo !!!! 😅
Very interesting explained very well
Thanks Ken! That combo of the Tremelo and the multi tape head echo is an amazing sound. Can you imagine discovering that for the first time!
Nice video !!! CONGRATULATIONS !
Thank you! Cheers!
Very informative many thanks.. :)
Glad it was helpful! 🎸
Thank you so much. That is exactly what I needed to learn about right now. I'm greatly in your debt. - Jstn
That's very cool, you're welcome!
@@evergladesrhythm I esp. loved how you went through each of the knobs you used showing how small adjustments affected the sound. So many of these channels that review pedals either jst show the end product sound without showing how they got there. Or they crank a knob all the way up or all the way off to show what it does, without any appreciation of the subtle changes of the in-between positions. Your teaching method was far superior so now I have a much better understanding of what comprises Marvin's sound and what that pedal is capable of. Thanks again.
Hank has innovative innovatively used the electronics
Yes, it is amazing to think that he was a pioneer of that incredible style!
Nice squier Sir😊
Thanks 🙂They are great guitars, it needed quite a bit of tweaking, but I love it! I have a Squier Jazzmaster too that is one of my favorite guitars.
Ferry nice and helpfull🎉😊
Can you if you have time how to set up a couple of shadows tune
Like woderful land peace pipe
And more
Kind regards
Mannes
I’ll try to do more Shadows stuff soon
You briefly mentioned the VOX AC30
It’s also probably worth noting that the AC30 was built because of the Shadows.
Hank and Bruce soon realised that they couldn’t tour the worlds stadiums with 15watts as anyone today would understand. Hank went to JMI with their concerns and the AC30 was the end result. That’s how the legend amp came about.
And the rest is history! Its amazing to think about those guys making those things for the first time! What a sound.🎸
A Boss DM-101 effekttel lehet ilyen hangzást előállítani.Előre is köszönöm.
i think it was Joe Brown who gave hank the echo machine.
So cool, Can you imagine hearing that sound for the first time!
@@evergladesrhythm And George Harrison and Joe Brown were friends also.
Whats that plain string hanging loose on the Squier......have you changed anything on the electronics of the guitar? Thanks....cheers from Vancouver Canada.
Pretty funny, some of the songs I am working on have a Plain 3rd and some have a wound, so i switch back and fourth, not very practical but hey! It works.
I have not changed the electronics, they sound really good.
Thanks for producing a great, very informative vid.
Could you pls tell me if you're using a mic'd up amp?
If so, whivch amp?
Hey! I’m using a Kemper with a Vox profile, a Strymon Volante pedal for the echo.
Thanks for your email also. Thought I’d answer here so other viewers can benefit too! Glad you found the channel.
Thanks very much for the info.
I hope you don't mind me asking, but would it be possible to share your Kemper settings?
@@gatebar110 That would be another video for another day - but noted! I'll keep it in mind.
It was Joe Brown that had the meazzi but didn't like it,so gave it to Hank
What a gift!
I had a vox 2ccx need a crane to move it
That is a big issue isn't it. I recently played one of the new handwired vox Ac15's that thing sounded great and is much lighter.
........ and what mic pls
Mark Knofler was born in Maryhill Glasgow Scotland UK not England
True! Thanks.
The Strymon is fantastic, but it isn't possible to get Echomatic head timings. You just get as near as possible for each song echo, but always within the limitations of the unit.
That is true! There is not as much control over the individual head, but you can get fairly closing with the spacing dial and being able to turn he heads on and off with the feedback. It would be nice to have a real one though!
Hi, why is there a string hanging out of the bridge?
For the shadows style stuff I have 2 g stings that I switch back and fourth, because some of the parts need a wound 3rd. Cheaper than having to buy 2 guitars 🤓
@@evergladesrhythm Yeah, thats fine, using two strings. however I'd still prefer to hear any shadows track, using only the notes that Hank used.
A poor man's way of simulating a multi-head tape echo is to daisy-chain a couple (or more) simple delay pedals, and configure them to get that elusive sequence of echo patterns.
Yes! I'll have to get my Echoplex out some time and make a video showing off that beauty.
bought a strymon volante butt sounding crabb
Can anybody help me with the sound
I looked also on RUclips butt still the sound is bad
The mutted party are oke butt the melody sounds with a delay it seems
Any help .....
Kind regards
Mannes
Reach out to @strymon Those pedals are awesome so maybe there’s something going wrong
Also as a starting point I would put it on the tape mode, set the recording level low, the wear knob high (75%) and just use one tape head and set the feedback to about 40%
That will give you a nice analogue sound, then from there you can tweak, add more heads, change the settings etc.
1958 Stratocaster, not 1959. Pretty sure.
Nice! Can you imagine playing that thing? It is a true Icon.
I think Bruce Welch has it now.
@@evergladesrhythm - He does have it now and Cliff says he did not give it to him, he borrowed it and never gave it back. Cliff said that he would have given it to Hank. What is remarkable is that Hank never thought it was his. Hank has just decided to let it go. Speaks more to Hank's character compared to Bruce's.
Fantastic well done can you tell me what pick ups have the Fender start and what strings and you use please.
Thank you so much
Well done
I heard Hank correct a fan who thought the first Strat was a 58 and said it was a 59.
@@petermarkovic8837 - OK on that. He did get it in 1959 in the second half, so maybe 1959 is right. It was said that around six months later in early 60 that it made its appearance on Apache and history was made.
My friend youre string is broken
It’s a spare wound 3rd I use on some songs. I know that’s wierd, but the wound G string sound awesome, but you can’t really bend it.😅
Yeah it was joe brown who give him the echo box
Ah, that is cool. A legend!
