- This was "secretely" filmed at the Birmingham NEC in 1999 and includes bits of the soundcheck. It has have never been released before! Someone else had a video uploaded some time ago, which was filmed from the other side of the stage, not to be confused with this.
Since the video contains copyrighted music, RUclips may put adds in it, to benefit the copyright holders. I have nothing to do with that and do not profit from it in any way.
He was “The British Bass Player” of the early 60’s, and a major influence who paved the way for future professional bassists. Rest In Peace, Jet…..!
Jack Bruce for one!
So underrated as well
TOTALLY agree. Jet and Rick Kemp (Steeleye Span) were my mentors when it came to my taking up the bass. Had the pleasure of bumping into him in one of our local music stores in Swindon back in the '80s. One lovely person.
What a Bass player! So lovely to see him get the kudos he deserved in later life.
These two men were my heroes as a teenager. Such a shame they had a falling out, but nice to hear them play together one last time.
I'm not sure that they did (certainly there was a major falling-out with Tony Meehan). My impression was that Jet's wife had an affair with Cliff Richard (she apparently only married Jet to get close to Cliff). When he found out, he was shattered and hit the bottle in a big way, and simply could no longer perform.
@Anton Differing Carol Costa. My understanding was that he started drinking and being undisciplined generally when they were on tour and Hank was just too professional for that. Note on the early publicity material, it refers to Jet as their leader.
@@farmbrough Yes, I remember Jet being referred to as leader. If you haven't already seen it, check out the BBC's "The Shadows at 60", also on RUclips. Bruce Welch goes into detail about Tony Meehan's departure, very much for the reasons that you mention - they had a good thing going and they couldn't let the fans and promoters down by tolerating his misbehaviour. Curiously, the show says nothing about Jet's departure. I guess it was too much of a tragedy.
Yes, I've watched that (twice). It have the Shadows some overdue mainstream recognition.
Did they?. I thought he left to be a music producer etc.
When Jet and Hank played "Kontiki" they were instantly transported back to 1962
I was there and boy did I have a lump in my throat when these two shared the stage again.
Jet Harris was the best bass guitar player The Shadows has . The line's bass guitar Jet are marvellous. Great moment with H. Marvin. RIP Jet Harris.
🤩
A joy to watch.
Brilliant to see Jet play with Hank, one of the greatest!!
Great playing on both parts. - Hank and Jet are such a great improvisers!
I met Jet shortly before he left us.He was a really good bloke.Thank you Jet.
This is really nice and took me back to a lovely place, Appy Daze RiP Jet lovely man, Hank the guitar man ❤️
The Sixties was Great Britain's defining decade musically never will be surpassed Jet Harris and Hank Marvin were the driving force that kick started that decade the first of the guitar hero's.
Jet the first bass guitar hero in the UK knowing how it is done.Such a brilliant bass player very influential to many people such a legend and very sadly missed
Agree, Jet and Tony left us far too early. Part of the best Shadows line up.
Dan Harrow I agree with you 100 per cent. I first saw Hank, Bruce, Jet and Tony at Blackpool in 1961. The BEST line up!
@@danharrow7458 I thought Tony was a great drummer
Crying my eyes out watching Jet. God bless. 😢
This is treasure. Marvin's gear was all set up for the function and Harris had to improvise set up on an available instrument he didn't have time to prepare (or properly tune).
In the jazzy piece, Marvin realized the tuning problem but also knew that Harris would correct for the flat string, then Marvin supplied piano-like jazz punctuation to give room for Harris to really show his jazz bass mastery.
Having re-tuned, the Shadows pieces were given in a similar way to tapes still in BBC archives from decades earlier and the warmth between the musicians was great. The drummer mimed the last track because Marvin's tape, prepared for the semi-tutorial function, could not be switched off or the drummer didn't know the piece.
Fortunately, occasional bass punctuation points were faded and Harris had full rein, albeit too lightly amped.
This really shows a major reason why Harris left The Shadows (apart from well enough known addictions and a car crash). Marvin and Walsh were content with virtuoso pop instrumentals and backing but Harris and Meehan were jazz men and rather self-effacing, enjoying the pay but not fame. Marvin, Welch and Bennett could handle tours and travel and Welch was a great organizer but Harris and Meehan preferred to avoid the entertainment industry and just play. Actually, Harris recognized that he had limited guitar talent compared to Marvin but went on to be a team builder in British music and this is often overlooked -- never by Marvin and Welch though.
Fretless and double bass sang with Harris playing but there are few remaining tapes because his various bands or guest appearances were of minority appeal, although I believe that some tapes from his Isle of Wight years exist and some fretless bass by Harris will be in the estate of Jeff Beck when it is explored.
Meehan turned to private recording long before it was a trend and material with Harris exists unedited. Harris and Meehan had a special bond and inspired younger musicians, especially in matters of technique and solid support in percussion and bass for other genres of music.
This wonderful upload demonstrates the degree of comprehensive musicianship these British "war babies" had.
Thank you.
Jet Harris made it cool to be a bass player before McCartney did
It’s been said that Jet was Paul’s inspiration to take up the bass
RIP Jet Harris. You are missed. xx
I don't know how many times I listend to these tunes when I was a youngster. The sound track of my early teens. And they were the originals over here. No Shadows, no Beatles, or any other 3-guitar band. Just brilliant.
When you do it so effortlessly, you are clearly a master.
Still a fab bass player Jet was....he’s always the bass player I think of with The Shads! Very nice post thanks
Love this! Thank goodness it's on film.
Jet made it COOL to be on bass 👍
Jet was the best bass player the shadows had...all the early hits ..
It seemed to me that John Rostill was as good (curiously, he lasted much longer than Jet and "Liquorice" Locking combined!). He tragically committed suicide, leaving a wife and one year-old son.
@@marlenesullivan3113 Mark Griffiths as good as any
@@antond.7980
Rostill était le meilleur de tous les bassistes, et je dis cela malgré ma grande amitié pour mon cher Licorice, excellent et formidable harmoniciste, mais pas aussi enlevé que John Rostill.
@@antond.7980 Various sources attribute his death to accidental electrocution. I wonder which one is correct?

Oh boy, how Jet Harris influenced bass playing. Something very special in his phrasing whether good or bad, it enhanced the Shadows from being sterile band. Much as Bill Wyman did for the Stones. His selection of phrases made the early Stones music 'Classic'. Both bands were never the same again once their original bass players left. RIP Jet and thank you so much for the memories and music.
I love hank and the boys,I never tire of listening to their music, also have apache as my ring tone.saw them in 1988 ,they were brilliant, everyone up dancing.
Marvin didn't need to go to a studio to record. His live performances were hard to distinguish from the studio. Always clean and sharp or whatever the right words are.
Many thanks for uploading this piece of Shadows history . Wonderful to see Jet and Hank playing together again .
Good to see them playing together again!
Jet doesn’t even have to look at the fretboard what a player
That is awesome.
Brilliant thanks for letting us see it .
Hank hasn't changed a jot, and Jet is still recognisable. If you didn't know who Jet Harris was, you'd probably think he was just some old geezer down the pub. It should never be forgotten that Jet is responsible for two landmarks. "Seeing as we're all playing at the back in Cliff's shadow, why not The Shadows?"
He was responsible for popularising the bass guitar as an instrument of significant consequence, and was one of the first Fender bass owners in the UK
How wonderful to see ❤
Good to see the Shadows at this gig. For a certain generation these boys were a life soundtrack. They played really well here, especially Jet who passed away twelve years later.
Wow... Just absolutely wow! 💙
Brilliant guitaring! Shadows were a brilliant group.
Of all the performers, i love Jet Harris while playing his guitar.
Merci et Bravo pour ce moment inoubliable !!!
The don't make 'm like that anymore!! Great Guys!!
Great to see them back as good friends.
Remember it well.... Great to be there
Thanx for sharing, so glad you filmed 2 guitar icons, pitty brian and bruce were not there, that would have been fantastic.great vid stay safe
Great stuff RIP Jet
Love that they did this together.
Such a shame that Bruce and Hank didn't have him back more often. Each gigged with him individually, but he was never taken back into the shadows as a regular bass player, which, in my opinion was a huge mistake and a snub on a man who after all gave the group its name.
Yeah but he was an alcoholic, and for 30 years. You need somebody reliable, especially in a band on tour. It's such a shame I agree, but you can't hire someone when they aren't at their best. If only he'd admitted he was an alcoholic earlier in his life and then he didn't need to be sacked from the band.

Booze ruined it for Jet.
There were two sides to all this. Someone was messing with his wife at the beginning, which probably started the booze thing, but Jet did get off of the drink in the end, very much to his credit. Don't forget, Bruce very nearly committed suicide at one time too. Actually, they did sort of get back together in a finale at a Marty Wilde concert. An brilliant tribute.
Brilliant
…..Excellent, thank you.
cant beat the originals .Jet was gr8 .Shame drink got the better of him .RIP.
Yes the drink got him
But i think the car crash he had really didn't help
Jett was always awesome!
I dont think this was his best performance? But lovely to see them together again.
It was completely unrehearsed.
Well he did tell them he didn’t want to use the Fender ! Don’t think Nivram is as good on acoustic guitar, but great to see them together again even if a bit formal?
How cool. Fantastic. Thanks. :- )
Nice to see jet was a member of the shadows
He was actually a drifter first off.lol
Hairs on the back of my neck, and a tingle down my spine❤❤🎸🎸.
Magic
I was there!!
I was there too. Got to meet Hank at the Fender stand and gave me advice on how to play FBI 😎
@@philcamm8819 I met him there too! Great memories
@@nickkellie were you on stage at one of the club stands? Think I watched you play Jessica if my memory is not playing tricks on me!
I'm jealous
@@philcamm8819 yes I was!
I was there for this🤓
Magic!
It doesn't get cooler than Jet Harris.
Nivram was the first ever electric bass solo in the UK. I personally regard the original as the perfect record - one note more, one note less would have spoiled it.
Just Think How His Fingers Worked 🎼🧡
So sad jet lost out on so much fame and fortune he should have had. RIP jet you playing will live on.
Probably one of the first rock n roll casualties. Poor old jet. Great shame!
God bless Jet 🙏🎼🇬🇧 Hank !
Wow, Kon tiki, makes the hairs on back of your neck stand up.
That is the shadows. Without Jet , forget it .
I was there it was unreal, took an old sixties black and white photo jet signed it for me 2:56
This reminds strangely of a Power Trio like Cream, Jack Bruce and Jet Harris - and the sound on that bass here is a bit Jack Brucey.
The drummers ride symbol is on fire!
Met jet and Alan Jones at shadmania and had pic taken with both of them. Lovely approachable guys both of them. Needless to say I was made up
👍👍👍👏👏👏🙏🙏
Does anyone know what the first song was pls
Nivram
Wasn't Jet the first in the UK to play a bass guitar?
Jet started off as a Jazz Guitar player, as you can hear.
Feel sorry for the son who died an alcoholic living in the ymca is crouch end
It is the first video presenting the two giants play together after the withdrawal of Jet. It's a bit strange the 2 greatest British groups, the Shadows and the Beatles, split up due to the interference of women. Nivram is the best of Jet's performance, in my opinion.
Jet was no lightweight
When jet left the shadows the other bass players never had the class jet gave the group.
I did not know Bob Newhart knows how to play bass guitar. Maybe.
It's well documented Jet wasn't reliable especially with drink and concerts.
désolé mais Jet Harris ne sait pas jouer en ternaire et surement pas au médiateur
Eh ?
Poorly everything! What a big fat shame!
What a big fat shame you had to comment,!
A shame??? Are you mad mate that was not a shame but you are
@@debbiejones1259 It's a mess in fact.c'mon!
Just love Jet.
