How desperately sad. He was one of my idols back in the day. I really hope he found happiness after this video was made. At least he had a lovely wife. God bless them.
I met Jet at one of his later gigs - at a theatre in Leicester - and had my picture taken with him. He’s a lot smaller than I had thought. Regrettably, I no longer have that picture but I did treasure it for years and the memory still. He was one of my idols too.
@@John-ob7dh this video was his second wife margaret, sadly that ended in divorce too. His first wife in the late 50s had an affair with Cliff Richard, but I think after they'd split up. Jet Harris is a fantastic basist. When I was young I was a great fan of the shadows I've still got a few EPs of the shadows even when Jet and Tony Meehan left the shadows, they did a few records and they were brilliant. A couple of years ago I saw Jet Harris at the Westcliff theatre in my home town clacton on sea he was still brilliant.
I met Terry in 1987 in Calpe Spain. spent a happy morning playing Pop Quiz. A lovely unassuming guy. Glad he found a nice lady to share his later years.
Jet's mental state back in 1962/63 wasn't helped by Cliff having it away with his wife. No wonder the guy imploded through drink. But hey, we aren't meant to tarnish the image of 'Christian Cliff' are we? RIP Jet - you made me want a Fender Bass VI for so many years and it must be said that 'Man from Nowhere' is one of the greatest ever 60's instrumentals. Crying shame it was never a single...
@billybuckleymusic8766 He didnt have it away with jets wife resulting in jet "imploding through drink". The car crash drove him to drink and when his wife had a fling with cliff, jet and his wife carol costa were estranged. "After Delia Wicks died in 2010, her brother Graham Wicks said that she had been "devastated" by Richard's decision to end their relationship, describing Richard as "a very pleasant man". At the age of 22, a year after his relationship with Delia Wicks ended, Richard had a brief romance with the actress Una Stubbs. Later in the 1960s, Richard considered marriage to the dancer Jackie Irving. Richard described Irving as "utterly beautiful" and says for a time they were "inseparable". Irving went on to marry Adam Faith. In his autobiography, Richard stressed that "sex is not one of the things that drives me", but he also wrote of his seduction by Carol Costa, who at the time was the estranged wife of Jet Harris." Cliff did not become a Christian until 1965. No doubt that incident was part of why though he had fame, adoration of women all over the world, money, he was "hysterical". Cliff's words. Consequently, he knew he needed Christ in his life.
Glad I spent some time following Jet about in his later years, saw his last gig and shook his hand at the end. How he ever got through that show I'll never know.....RIP Jet, never ever forgotten.
You can't trust anyone in this new age, but you have a good lady and together the best will come, keep being positive and put your minds back into action, you havent had your fingers chopped off yet, you lucky so and so, you still have a talent that many have never had, you still got it baby!! So glad to see he's with someone to laugh with. He is a talented man and he works through crap hopefully it made him stronger. The younger musos should see having Jet in their band is gold.
Tragic. Jet Harris, apart from having the best moniker ever, was one of the top bass players of that golden age, a major player in that invention of the 'British Sound'. The fans remember, but the 'industry' let him down.
This is a very sad story. Jet Harris stood out on the early 45 EP covers of The Shadows. He left and had some success with Tony Meehan. Alcoholism is a big problem and people don't want to know you quite simply because of their mental state and many don't want to get involved in the effort, time and trouble to get them out of it. Even friends and family can drift away till you're alone. It doesn't stop them thinking about you - but everyone wants to get on with their own life. What can you do?
I must admit, I feel for them, as he used to be part of The Shadows, then went off with Tony Meehann to get decent music to us pop music teenagers. But I understand where he's coming from, saying that friends use, and then vanish when the money runs out, as its happened to us over the years as well. Now we are pensioners, and not working through disability, and get phone calls to see how we are, then as you are about to say goodbye you hear the phrase, "Before you go, please could you.............." which is why they rang in the first place. Couldn't you teach guitar Jet ? I'm sure like Dave Hill from Slade, your services would be in demand. We really hope things pick up for you and Janet, from a lifelong fan, Dave and his wife Janet(47 years married) Hugs and love ❤ xxx
Here are the reasons why my mother was so against me getting serious about a musical career. Untrained "Pop" called but a relative few to greatness. I suppose the other Shadows had their own fears about their fragility and Jet admits to his unreliability and a bale out. You don't get that lucky twice. Most don't get that lucky once! It's a hard way of life. Travelling, away from home. Intermittent - giving time which requires filling. Some write & practice, some don't, and ride their luck until it runs out. Even the mighty Beatles didn't last long as a band did they? Just their writing credits to carry them through. Being a little contrary carried risks as John Lennon found out. I loved The Shadows and Hank's remarkable gift shows itself at every performance he gives. He stuck with his pal Bruce who has written a few. I think they would have stuck with Jet (Terry) if he could have just been more reliable. I'm afraid boredom is one of those things many would be intelligent people are quick to claim as their reason for drinking. However it's what you do with your intelligence that matters is it not? I remain grateful to Cliff, The Shadows, (inc Jet), for brightening up my teenage and giving me a musical hobby that has carried me down the years in between some real work. Thanks Jet RIP.
He'd be stinking rich himself he he hadn't of blown it all on the high life, he said he was earning 3000 quid a week at his peak, 62/63, at that time you could buy a house for less than 2000 quid. It's not the people he used to work with faults, he left them. They aren't relatives or even friends as such, just old work mate's. Judging by him being interviewed in a pub, I'd hazard a guess that if they did help him out he'd have blown that as well. Many acts of that time had nowhere near as much success or made anywhere near as much money as him, but are far better off. He had a reputation as a big shot and rubbed a lot of other up and coming acts the wrong way. He was part of a great band that made some great music and chose his own path
