What's My Line? - LOST EPISODE CLIP! Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis (Jan 24, 1954)

  • Here's the only snippet known to exist from the Jan 24, 1954 episode with Martin and Lewis, probably the single "most wanted" lost episode of WML (along with the Jul 31, 1955 episode with Ty Cobb. I think I'd vote for the 1951 show with Chico, or the Sept 25, 1955 episoe with Jackie Gleason in costume as Ralph Kramden!) This clip comes from the "WML at 25" special aired in 1975; the presumption over the years has been that the film of the full episode was damaged in the process of using it for the special, but we don't really know that to be the case.
    Unlike most of the 100 or so lost episodes, there's good reason to believe that this one will turn up one day, thanks to Jerry Lewis's known mania for self-documenting every aspect of his career. It wouldn't be at all surprising if he requested a copy of the show for his own archive.
    Unfortunately, even if this is the case, his materials were donated to the Library of Congress in 2015, and nothing gets out of the Library of Congress. But it would still be nice to know if it's there. . .

    This isn't really anything "new"-- there's another video of this clip that was posted elsewhere a long time ago. But I thought it worth posting this copy which is in better video quality. Let's hope the full episode turns up in Jerry Lewis's collection at the Library of Congress!

      Hi Gary--
      I sent you a message through the RUclips private messages system, am trying to ascertain if I may send and receive messages that way.
      Previously, we had communicated a few times through the RUclips private messages system. But the site has been changed a few times since and with a few others besides yourself I seem unable to use the system anymore.
      Someone once posted publicly (like this here) he had tried to write me privately but received an error message that my RUclips account was not set up to receive messages. So I want to at least try to configure my account correctly once and for all, if that is even possible. Of course it is useless to expect to receive any live help directly from Google, the owner of RUclips.
      Please let me know back here if you DIDN'T receive the private message.
      If you DID receive the private message, then you may respond accordingly there.
      It is also possible you may see my sent message but I may not receive and be able to view a reply, which is why I requested you send me an email message (I provided my email address in coded form) if you receive the private RUclips message from me.
      You are the only person with whom I have communicated privately on RUclips more than once and also trust to do this correctly.
      Ultimately, I would like to chat with you about some "What's My Line?" stuff, too. But right now I need to deal with the basics.
      I will remove this post once I have resolved this issue. But this is the only method of which I could immediately think that might produce some results. Could John Charles have worded this any more precisely, or Dorothy concocted a scenario in which results could be determined any more quickly?
      Thank you, in advance, for this. It is very important to me to have my lines of communication open, at least to those with who I wish to communicate and who need to be able to do likewise.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  6 лет назад +6

      Not only are the private messages notifications completely borked on RUclips (that's been the case for a LONG time), at this point, I don't receive any notifications whatsoever from RUclips for 90% of the public comments on this channel anymore, not even comments like yours that are directly REPLYING to one of my comments. So thank you, again, RUclips, for making everything as impossible as you can, and for helping to create the impression-- who knows how often, since I don't get notifications-- that I just don't care to respond to people. Evry change they've made since I started has made things worse. Every single one. So thank you again, RUclips. . . SO VERY MUCH.
      I do see the private message now-- I just didn't have any way to know it was there. And it's pure luck I happened to see your comment to me here-- I only saw it because RUclips notified me of someone ELSE'S new comment on this video, not yours, which was a DIRECT REPLY. It makes me so angry, especially considering how awful the comments on RUclips generally are. It's really helping matters to make it literally impossible for channel owners to even TRY to police the comments.
      Rant over-- I got your message and will drop an email. I'm pretty crazy busy and stressed lately, though, so fair warning and advance apologies! Good to hear from you. --WGW

      I submitted an inquiry to the Library of Congress, asking whether the complete episode exists in Jerry Lewis' collection. They reported that only the mystery guest segment exists (Game 2) - but it may be a longer excerpt than the one presented here. Receiving materials from LoC isn't as difficult as you think. You only need copyright approval, and to pay the film-to-video transfer fees.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  5 лет назад +4

      @@mattwheeler2511 No, actually, it's a lot more difficult than you're aware. How does one obtain "copyright approval" for something that's not copyrighted? You can't. And that means the LOC won't release it, period. I've run into brick walls trying to get permission to listen to the couple of the WML radio shows they have on disc ON SITE, solely for research purposes for a book on WML. This sort of research shouldn't require permission from anyone even if the material WERE copyrighted, but when it's not, it's the height of absurdity that the LOC, which is responsible for the administration of copyright filings, requires permission be granted from a non-existent copyright holder to do RESEARCH.

    • @mattwheeler2511
      @mattwheeler2511 5 лет назад +1

      @@WhatsMyLine I don't mean to initiate an argument. I shared my personal experiences with onsite research at, and obtaining copies from LOC. I never needed copyright approval for an on-site viewing copy. If I myself wanted a copy of an item not copyrighted, the librarians required a copyright search to prove that no registration exists. I can't say I've encountered a situation like what you describe. Maybe the donor restricted the collection.

    Jerry hated when Dean got more laughs than he did. He pretty must got the writers to take away funny lines, so that he would get the laughs. It's one of the major reasons they broke up. Plus Jerry told Dean that he was nothing without him.

      "Martin started to feel that Lewis was exerting too much control over their work and began to talk of returning to his solo career. Lewis, who still idolized Martin in many ways, felt betrayed, and before long the two stopped speaking."
      I regard anything that Jerry Lewis said after Dean Martin died as revisionist.
      Also the real Jerry Lewis was much more like buddy love than the daffy funny childman he portrayed.
      Lewis was also tremendously strong for his size and could do circus performer type feats.
      Lewis was also estranged from all of his children while Martin had a close relationship with his children. If I had to pick one to be friends with, it would have been Martin.
      And I loved his TV show when I was growing up.
      While I recognize Lewis as a tremendously funny and talented man, there's just something off about him for me.

    I'm curious, What's My Line, which years in general are the lost episodes from, and who, if you happen to know, were some of the mystery guests?
    I do enjoy this channel very much, and if it weren't for my aversion to social media ( you're never quite the same after you've been spoofed and defamed by a couple of determined Facebook sociopaths ), would be a part of your Facebook group.

    • @WhatsMyLine

      Almost all the lost episodes are from before July 1952, which is when Goodson-Todman began keeping their own archive of the films. There are only around a dozen shows thought to be completely lost from after 1952. Because I just happened to have been polling the members of the Facebook group about "which lost ep you'd give your firstborn child to see," I have a list of all the lost eps handy, sitting on Dropbox, if you want to take a look at it!
      Lost eps list: www.dropbox.com/s/uo8z11wfqx6khf1/WML%20Lost%20Episodes.txt?dl=0
      Glad you enjoy the channel-- and I understand aversion to social media completely. Probably needless to say, the WML group is not like anything you'd expect from Facebook. But I'm not trying to convince you. :)
