Lynn Castle, the lady barber and song writer, had her first album, Rose Coloured Corner, released in 2017 when she was 78 years old. The recordings were made some 50 years ago. She dated Phil Spector on and off for three years and her hair dressing clients included Del Shannon, the Byrds, Vincent Price, Johnny Mathis, Neil Young and Sonny and Cher, in whose Good Times movie she made a brief cameo. Although at one stage she nearly recorded with Bob Dylan (one of her "almost" stories) she ended up returning to hair dressing. Interesting lady with a fabulous husky voice.

Mia/Frank had been married about 4 months when this show played, and they were divorced less than 2 years later. According to an interview that Mia gave, she lost her virginity to Sinatra and married him when she was 21 and he was 50.

This show was always good. I was very young when it was on, but I enjoyed it. It's a class act. Everyone dressed so formal and elegante. Thank you for TV shows like this. Wish we had more.

It seems obvious that Bennett and Arlene had guessed early on that the mystery guest was Mia Farrow, and were just waiting for Frank Sinatra to figure it out.
I was born in '87, I wish I was born about 60 years earlier. People with this amount of charisma and charm were the norm, music was better, movies were better, I think I could have enjoyed and benefitted a lot more than I do now.

I was born in 1955, and wouldn't be young today for anything. A marvelous time to grow up. My advice: keep watching our old shows. Learn from them, and live like them. Some say they're unrealistic. I say they should be the norm, our examples, not the shallow, empty stuff of today. My child was born in 1976, and was raised as I was. It paid off. Our Baby Boomer values are worth keeping, repeating, and living by.
Music was definitely not better.
I was born in 2000. I love these kinds of old shows - I think the '50s and '60s were the golden age of TV. When it comes to movies, I prefer the '40s. I find myself getting more fun out of Adam West's Batman and The Andy Griffith Show than I do anything Netflix comes up with anymore. I do, however, think modern game shows still hold up. Jeopardy and The Chase are both excellent programs. I just wish there was this kind of charm, eloquence, and manners still on TV somewhere.
Movies now are all morbid black comedies or mediocre sequels. Everything needs to be miserable or comically melodramatic for anyone to take it seriously, it seems. I have to admit that I disagree on music. I'm not fond of the pop music of today, but the actual field is so broad and all-encompassing. There are still classical and opera composers, and there are some extraordinarily talented pianists. I prefer hard rock despite my formal personality. Some of these styles of music have true creative genius behind them, with songwriting one couldn't have found in the '60s and such, most of which were seemingly full of somewhat homogeneous love songs in somewhat homogeneous compositions.
The women on What's My Line? are dressed beautifully, but I have to admit that I wish the men were better-dressed. They seem to mostly just wear a black flannel suit with notch lapels and a pre-tied bow tie. I prefer a more opulent and traditional take on black tie - satin, peak or shawl lapels, a white pocket square, studs and matching cufflinks, a waistcoat (or at least cummerbund), and at least a self-tie bow tie. I wear this style at least every other week for ballroom dance parties, if not for fine dining or informal performing arts events. (White tie and tails is for the formal ones.) This kind of elegant black tie was a tragic victim to the Countercultural Revolution of the '60s. The way I see it, What's My Line? was an old guard in the face of the abject ruination of all things beautiful and elegant of the revolution. They still spoke like ladies and gentlemen rather than hippies and teenagers. I even heard on Wikipedia that the producers wanted to casualize the show to appeal to the youth, but relented out of fear of losing one brave Mr. John Charles Daly, who was unwilling to budge.
I understand lots fans of the show admire Dorothy's talent at solving occupations and miss her dearly, although for pure entertainment and every aspect of the playing the game, good will and all the rest of it Arlene was hands down the best of any person involved with WML!!!
What a great show this is. To be on for 17 years with regulars like Arlene,Dorothy and Bennett and host John , but also so many guest panelists. I've been watching episodes on RUclips for several weeks now and there doesn't seem to be many famous people that haven't appeared. Imagine how much money they'd have to pay the stars to appear today,it just wouldn't happen. Different times then , fantastic to have great shows like from the early days of television for us to enjoy today , absolutely love this show
I think the show was rigged, and/or that the guests could see through the masks. They always "guessed" the celebrity with only very vague clues. Very sus...
I mean to say that this episode holds a layer of irony. For Frank Sinatra to appear on the show with the level of involvement after the death of Dorothy Kilgallen speaks volumes of the feud between the two.
The long look that Frank gave the female barber as she walked past him. Priceless. I wonder if Mia was watching on a monitor out back?

Mia may have been used to that, Frank was a woman´s man. I guess he slept with any women whenever he wanted. And she only was with him for fame. Do you think that was love? 2 years and enough.
Mia had enough fame of her own, and as the daughter of actress Maureen O'Sullivan & director John Farrow. Love isn't necessarily absent re: short marriages, but their vastly different world views obviously were. I believe Sinatra expected his wife to stay home, while he was at liberty to do as he wished, while Mia would never expect to stop working & saw no harm to her marriage for doing so. Unfortunately, Mia couldn't predict that her dismissal would be swift & painful.

Because he's still a terrible actor, he rushed almost all the movies he was in, 80% of the scenes in Oceans 11 were done in at most 10 takes because he got tired of doing the same scene multiple times quickly. It's the reason the film doesn't stand up today

Because he was a mean, filthy-mouthed, and immoral. He once said that his goal in life was to become a Mafia don. Why would you expect someone like him to tell the truth? And the show revealed it was corrupt, by having a panelist who knew who the mystery guest was, and yet participated. And to think about it, how could Mark Goodson not know that Frank Sinatra was present?
@Shirtless …..I ABSOLUTELY agree with you. My late husband & I went to his concert. If I remember correctly, it was early 90s. I remember it being in March. I had always said there only two people I would stand in line for hours, if need be, Sinatra & The King, Elvis. Well, the King had been gone near about 15 yrs, so, we went to Sinatra's concert. My husband couldn't stand him, but he did it to please me. I recall his ugly wife having nearly an ENTIRE row to herself, and I'm talking bout 20 or more seats, on either side of her fat tail. I remember reading how he kept harassing Liz Smith and I read about Dorothy Killgalon, Barbara Walters and Kitty Kelly. Have I forgotten anyone?? LOL He was a plain old damn bully !! His last wife was NO better. She never did anything on her own, except to sleep with & marry wealthy men.
That was a setup, Montgomery Clef Should of won the Best supporting Actor for that Movie Sinatra sucked in it he is no Actor Like Dean Martin is period.
I like how Frank Sinatra acknowledged the audience. So few celebrities did on that show.
Several years later, People magazine began. Mia Farrow was the first person to appear on its cover.
O, how I wish my mother were still alive. It would have been fun to watch these old What's My Line? shows with her.

My father worked at Random House for a while and worked on that unabridged dictionary--and like the other employees who worked on it, he got a complimentary copy. I remember we had that massive hardcover dictionary around the house for years! Great resource.

Loved seeing Frank Sinatra. He fit in real well on the panel even if he was reluctant to. Clever of Mark Goodson to do what he did. I was beginning to think he was dense😅.

@Corno di Bassetto She went to India beginning of 1968 after Sinatra had served her with the divorce papers on the "Rosemary's Baby's" set (November 1967). The divorce was finalised in August 1968 by which time she had fallen briefly for John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas. Her marriage to Frank had lasted little more than one year because she wanted to pursue an independent career. But she also wanted a family and liked older men, because soon after (1969)she met 4 time-Oscar winning music composer & conductor André Previn, who was 40. She got pregnant and in 1970 they got married .

I, who DO have backed out & given up on no mean love interests out of respect for women, am not so judgemental. One can only expect sacrifices from him/herself, I believe. Emotional self-denials are very costly, even on the long term.

Two years later, Nancy Sinatra's collaborator, Lee Hazlewood, produced a single record by Lynn Castle. Lynn wrote both songs. The A-side was titled... The Lady Barber!
The song she wrote for the Monkees was called "Kicking Stones" or "Teeny Tiny Gnome." I don't think they released it. It's on a rarities album called "Missing Links."

What's sad is that it took the death of Dorothy Kilgallen before Frank Sinatra would ever appear on the show. He detested her and would never appear while she was a panelist.
I always wondered what he and Mia Farrow ever had in common. It was easily the shortest of his four marriages.
She was beautiful, angelic-looking, talented, obviously had a good sense of humour, was in the business so understood a lot of the requirements & unconventional hours & lifestyle and just so precious and unique. He had talent galore, charisma, a strong male vibe combining sexuality & paternal, protective warmth, and he went after anyone or anything he wanted relentlessly. It was a star-struck marriage sprinkled with lots of fairy dust, permeated with glamour & star power: what's not to love? They were both raised Catholic. I see a lot of sweetness in this union, a desire on his part to start over & mold someone young, fresh and untouched. She could learn so much from him, as he from her, in different ways. He was powerfully magnetic, loyal to his friends, loving, unpredictable, volatile and unique in his field. I see the initial attraction so clearly.

This show literally helped to pull me out of a huge depression several years ago. I had insomnia and was so thrilled to find it one late night on RUclips. I find it oddly COMFORTING and FAMILIAR! 😀

I met Mia's sister, Prudence Bruns. I believe John Lennon wrote a song about her, "Dear Prudence" after they met in India at the Transcendental Retreat with Maharishi. Prudence had so many celeb contacts with her mum and dad in Hollywood that meeting the Beatles didn't really appeal to her.
This would be fun show to revive. I like their classy look too.

Color me shocked to see Sinatra on this show. Because...ok, this show only recently started appearing in my recommended...and, I’ve been drawn in to watch a few. One being (according to video description and comments) from the actual day before Dorothy Kilgallen was found, dead. And the comments compelled me to look up the circumstances surrounding her death. And, from doing so, I learned about the hostility b/w Dorothy and Sinatra...and how he would make fun of her appearance during his live shows. And that he was callous about her death, as well. Not that he had anything to do with it, of course. But still...I just find his being on the show afterwards, in which she starred for 15 years, a bit weird. And everyone was friendly, naturally. But did they not know how badly he was insulting Dorothy while she was alive?
After seeing this its hard to imagine Mia Farrow could be so good in the Woody Allen films. She was great in Broadway Danny Rose.
What a fun episode! Watching them all in order and this is so far my favorite of the post-Kilgallen era. (Of course, it probably helps that I am a huge Sinatra fan!)

On July 19, 1966, Farrow married Sinatra at the Las Vegas home of Jack Entratter. She was 21 years old and Sinatra was 50. Sinatra wanted Farrow to give up her acting career, which she initially agreed to do. She accompanied Sinatra while he was shooting several films, but soon tired of doing nothing and signed on to star in Rosemary's Baby. Filming of Rosemary's Baby ran over its initial schedule, which angered Sinatra, who had cast Farrow in a role in his film The Detective (1968). After Farrow failed to report for filming, Sinatra cast actress Jacqueline Bisset in Farrow's role. In November 1967, while Farrow was filming Rosemary's Baby, Sinatra's lawyer served her with divorce papers. Their divorce was finalized in August 1968.
It was such a different country I'm 55 and seeing these for the first time. Now there would be lights and sirens and large money exchanges. Here even the stars seem normal.
ive got the feeling that being married to sinatra for two years was an epic ADVENTURE for miss farrow!

The beautiful lady barber in this show, Lynn Castle, was the favorite barber and stylist for many diverse celebrities. In addition to Steve Allen (as host John Daly mentions), she cut and styled the hair of musician Del Shannon, the Byrds, Sonny and Cher, Vincent Price, Neil Young, Johnny Mathis, author Ray Bradbury, singer Jim Morrison, songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and more.
That would explain it. Big hair was also very big in the 60s.

Something just occurred to me: most people don't approve of marriages where there's a huge age difference, like Frank and Mia, as well as other celebrities (and that's understandable), but how come no one ever seemed to have a problem with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall?
What a pleasant surprise to hear John Daly talk about my beautiful city-San Antonio, Texas. He was referring to the preparations for thev1968 World's Fair. It coincided with our 250th anniversary founding of the city. Now here we are 50 years later as we celebrate our 300th year.

Mia started young on ABC's 20th Century Fox Television production of "Peyton Place". Based on the novel and 20th Century Fox film of the same name, the show ran for 514 episodes, and 5 years, from 1964 to 1969. The program was a trailblazer for Primetime Soaps.
Mia played Allison MacKenzie in episodes 001-263.

Bennett and Arlene knew in 2 seconds. The others were lost and Sinatra didn't even disguise his voice.
Frank Sinatra was such a fantastic, extremely talented huge star in a galaxy of stars. I really don't think that there'll ever be anyone to come close to Sinatra. I am honored to have grown up in the latter half of his life. He was a real man's man who could really walk the walk.

Mia Farrow was a goddess. One of a kind. I think she is one of the few ladies I Actually loved with that short hair. (Personal choice, I love long hair). And a great actress.
I just found this show and it's so crazy to learn and come to enjoy all of these people on here and to learn they have been dead for years and years
The show was on when I was a little girl and watching these here really brings back memories

Mia Farrow was not the only one on "Peyton Place" with a Roman Polanski connection. Barbara Parkins who starred as Betty Anderson for the whole run, starred with Sharon Tate in "Valley of the Dolls". Tate played her signature role of Jennifer North in that film.
And Parkins attended the wedding of Roman & Sharon in January 1968.
I absolutely adore Frank Sinatra! Love the guy. That's how men acted back then. But he is a good guy and a hell of a talent. Mia loved him and Frank loved her. It is a fact that he told a friend later in life that "Mia is the most wonderful person I have ever known". I believe he had regrets on letting go of her. I think he acted tough because this is the time he was in. But deep down he had very deep feelings. He also had a big heart. Ask his friends.
Not all men, his rudenss and cheating and hard drinkinking got him arrested and what not., Our own John Daly and Bennett Cerf were great male examples. Bign Crosby as well. Animation's best, Walt Disney, who died that year (in 1966), was the best gentleman.
@@SteveCarras Bing Crosby was horrible to his kids. And possibly his wife. I never said Frank didn't have times he wasn't at his best. However, he had a huge heart. He acted tough but deep down, he was a teddy bear. A Gentleman to me was Jimmy Stewart. Frank was no Jimmy Stewart. But I never claimed he was.

That was so enjoyable to see. I was a young teen at the time and barely watched this show. My dad was the one that turned the channel, not us kids.
