Of course we celebrate Tết Vietnamese New Year here in California. We will set up thousands of firecrackers in my house this weekend. Do Koreans still celebrate the old Asian Lunar New Year or the new Western one?
Please excuse my long comment but this one is really something for me. I used to celebrate Tet in the States with my family but I really didn't quite understand/appreciate the scope and depth of Tet until the 10 years I live in VN. Tet is the time when we come back home to pay respect and thank those that raised us (our parents or guardians), that taught us to be who we are (teachers). So the week before 1st Day of Tet, we'd go to the cemetery of our parents/grandparents to clean up the grave and pay our respect. Then the 1st day of Tet we thank our parents and wish them health, etc. 2nd day of Tet we visit our inlaws or relatives. 3rd day of Tet a group of us (by us I mean some in our thirties) from our class would go visit our teachers (some even visit their teachers from grade school). The road would have these mini convoys of scooters going to visit these people. Many of you already know this but here is where I finally understood after having lived in Vietnam (and I believe being in China would really hammer the message home). I spent time on buses to go from HCMC to Nha Trang (my girlfriend and then wife's hometown) and then from Nha Trang back to HCMC after Tet would really hit me between the eyes and into my heart. There are literally millions of young people (late teens and early 20s) that moved from their home village/province to go to work in the industrial park province like Vinh Phuc in the North or Binh Duong and Dong Nai in the South. They work hard and lived even a harder life in 80 sqft room rentals with 2 other roomates to scrimp and save during the 11 months just so that they can have a little something to bring back home during Tet. They would wait for half a day on the highway, hoping to find a spot on the bus to get back home. After Tet and especially a tearful goodbye for many of the female workers, they would wait in the 2am - 4am hours on the side of the highway, hoping to catch a bus back to the industrial province to resume working or risk losing their job to another willing worker. China is not joking when they say it's the largest human migration during Tet/Lunar New Year and the ordeals that these young workers have to go through to make it home to visit their parents is what Tet is all about, and it's an awesome and emotional thing to behold if you see them in the early morning hours waiting on the side of the highway.
Love it! Make the videos longer! Hahahaa Really love the old look and feel of the place. Definitely a photographers paradise! The whole video from start to finish was filled with so much. I’m totally fascinated by Hanoi. Might be nice to see the area at night as well especially that first street you were on with the beautiful ladies taking pictures on the bicycle 😎✌🏽
I'll try and make 15 minute videos instead of 10 minute videos. ^^ Yeah, Hanoi's architecture and old vibe really make it a charming city. Stay tuned as I will be filming about nightlife in the Old Quarter area soon.
This young man seems to like every thing in HN indeed, especially street food so much. Oh man! Looking at the way he enjoys eating street food in Hanoi's old quarter - so so delicious. I used to be so surprised about his ability of eating extremely hot pepper!!!!!!- OMG !! I thought that hot stuff gonna make himself a fire ball of real hell .... ha ha ha.... but he still alive so far, making video clips to entertain people ....!!!!???? Ha ha ha..... It is one of ways to enjoy real life. Very interesting video clip. Thanks. Keep up the very joyful and useful job.
Thanks Cory , I was walking with you in the video, I always love your walk videos, it's why I subscribed to your channel, your videos in Seoul and now Hanoi.
OMG, I Miss the Lunar New year so bad Cory!!!! Gruhhhh, jealous.. :D. So you enjoy the Lunar New year in Vietnam this year huh?? So good. Please definitely make 1 more video on how people prepare for Lunar New Year. And lastly, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!:D. Thanks for good videos of Hanoi all the times '
Oh no!!! I know they do some lion dancing in Japan, and they have their own lunar festivals, but it's not the same as Tet in your home country. ^^ Tomorrow my girlfriend will come from Hai Phong to visit me, then the next day we will go to Hai Phong and I will spend Tet with her and her family there. I hope I have a chance to capture some of the preparations! Chúc mừng năm mới!
Thank you again for showcasing such a beautiful and interesting country. I look forward to each and every one of your videos. Now I am getting caught up in the excitement of Lunar New Year. LOL!
You're welcome! It's such a fun and crazy time. Yesterday's traffic was INSANE, because everyone was off and traveling around getting last minute gifts before going to their hometowns all over the country. I'll be going to Hai Phong with my girlfriend to spend the Lunar New Year with her family. Can't wait to film the preparations and food!!!
Thank you for making this video. It makes me miss my home country so bad. I really enjoy the video. I will try the banana sticky rice next time. It looks so yummy.
You're welcome!!! You should come back to Vietnam!!! Yeah, the sticky rice & grilled banana is one of my new favorite street food desserts. ^^ Perfect for Hanoi's cold winter! I like it better than Xoi Che.
Just arrived in Saigon yesterday and staying here until Sunday, the day after Lunar New Year. Then flying up to Hanoi to visit for 4 days and hopefully some of those decorations will still be around. Flying back to Saigon for a few more days until I fly back to the US. Can't wait to see Hanoi!
Wow, have fun during Tet in Saigon! I wonder what that would be like. Hopefully the decorations are still up. I'd imagine they would be... cause they need to get rid of that overstock of 2018 and dog imagery. hehehe If you have questions about Hanoi, let me know!
I don't think the decoration still up in Hanoi if you visit on Lunar New Year days. Vietnamese have just traded stuff on the days after and before tet. But you'll see a peaceful side of Hanoi so hopefully you'll get fun. Welcome to Vietnam dude =))
I hear this a lot from people... south is more friendly, north is not friendly. But in my experience, EVERYONE is friendly. I've been to Nha Trang, and everyone was friendly. Also, everyone I meet in Hanoi or Hai Phong is friendly. Vietnam is FRIENDLY. hehehe Doesn't matter about south or north.
The south is more out going and lay back where as the North is more reserve and adhere to rules and traditions. Thus the reason people view the south as more friendly.
Totally loved this trip during TET to the old quarters. Nice editing - you just keep getting better. You look so comfortable there. Korea seems like so long ago...
Feed The Cory Hey Cory. Except for a few day trips, Ha Long Bay, Sapa, we will be staying in Hanoi. I would love to go to Hoi An, but I've heard it too far away for a day trip. Any suggestions for a must see day trip?
You should check out Ninh Binh as well for a quick 2 day trip, it's a gorgeous place that I've heard a lot about. There's a train from Hanoi Railyway Station that goes there for... I think 100K per person, my friends just went and invited me but I was busy coming to Hai Phong for Tet holiday. There's also some massive cave system somewhere around here that is also a day trip. All of these things I've heard through Facebook expat groups, but I've yet to go to them myself. Still haven't been to Halong Bay or Sapa yet!
i never visited there during tết but i will stay there when i retire i notice there is no more begging on the streets anymore for the past few years used to be notorious just like in south America...
Yeah, I heard about that too. But these days I don't know where the homeless are. I never see any. Only once or twice I've seen a guy going around begging for change. But it's so uncommon. Thanks for commenting!
What's up Cory! long time, thanks for the video I don't live in Vietnam but I'm very familiar with it because of videos like yours. I wish I can be there for Tet, the atmosphere is much better than any holiday here in the U.S!
Yo Clifford! It's been a long time since I seen you commenting on anything. ^^ Missed you in my livestream this morning! The Tet holiday week is just starting now, so I can't wait to see all the cool stuff this week and film it for you and everyone!
Feed The Cory Thanks Cory! My parents and I were planning on going to Danang (which is my Dad’s home town) for Tet this year but the plan fell through so I just have to live by vicariously through your video, looking forward to that video Cory.
Cory, I growing up eating that hot banana dessert and I miss it so much, you can not find it over here in the US and sometimes people try to make it it’s still not the same. You should go back to that banana stall and eat more.👍👍👍👌👌👌
Where in the US do you live Victoria, I forgot. I know you told me before in a livestream I think, but I can't remember. lol I want to make that dessert at home! It seems very easy to make. ^^ I'm sorry you can't find your childhood dessert over there... can you make it at home?
Feed The Cory I live in Las Vegas. It’s tricky to make that sticky rice just right and to wrap it around the Asian banana 🍌 the banana have to be very ripe and sweet ( you can not use the American banana) and shred young coconut 🥥 . I tried a few times in Little Saigon Garden Grove but it’s not the same. I ended up watch your video again just to see you eat my dessert...haha.
hahaha Awwww... I'm sorry I made you miss your favorite dessert again. Hmm... so they don't sell smaller bananas there? Is there a Mexican variety of banana that you can use instead? Now I'm very curious about how to make this dessert at home. I will look up some recipes online! ^^
I am not a chinese but I love it so much when Lunar New Year arrives. We Malaysians celebrate all the festivals throughout the year regardless what religion you believe in.And also LNY reminds me of my girlfriend.I really missed those days.I am a Rabbit in Chinese calender. What chinese zodiak are you Cory?
Yeah, Malaysia is a true melting pot of cultures!!! So cool you celebrate so many different holidays. ^^ I def need to visit Malaysia!!! I'm Year of the Rooster (1981)
I have a million questions, the little bushes with the pink flowers what are they??? The flowers beautiful. The Orchids what is the secret to growing them so beautiful? Is it the weather there? All the colors unbelievable . The food I am just so hungry ha the banana and peanut , sticky rice and coconut. Got to try and find that here in the U.S.A. How long did you stay here? Did you get to go inside any of the old buildings? They are beautiful on the outside.
Hi Sandra, I'll try to answer the questions I know the answers to. Those are pink cherry blossom branches. No idea about secret to orchids, sorry. Winter weather in northern Vietnam is cold, it gets down to as cold as 5°C in mid-January. It's been hovering around 20°C these days, but the wind chill makes it still feel cold, definitely still wearing jeans, sweaters, and jackets these days. I live near the Old Quarter, which is where this was filmed. I walked around for maybe 2 hours filming this video. I've been in Hanoi for almost 9 months. When you live here, you go into old buildings all the time, because many businesses are built inside of them. The Old Quarter is touristy, but it's also a special place, dating back 1000 years.
Beautiful scenery. The one thing that throws me off is your dessert you bought. It looks yummy, except for the part where the guy used his bare hands to sprinkle the coconut on.
Yeah, when I was editing the video, I knew someone was going to comment about the bare hands. This is southeast Asia, where many street vendors don't wear gloves when handling your food. It's just how it is. But I've never been sick from any street food in any Asian country, ever. Glad you enjoyed the video! ^^
You can easily get sick on the bus or train in North American where people cough in the winter from October to March than people in Vietnam handling food w/o the gloves on.
Yep, I know what Thit Cho is... I didn't realize it was behind me when I was filming, though, until I was editing. I knew people would comment about it. hehehe But dog meat restaurants are common in Vietnam, unfortunately.
Cory, do you know what is the best thing of Tet holiday ? that is Táo Quân -a tranditional comedy show we just can see on this time, If you can understand Vietnamese and you will stay long in Viet nam, you should watch that
Thanks for the advice! I can't watch that show unless there are English subtitles. My Vietnamese language ability is very basic, very beginner style. hehehe Maybe one day, if I study a lot, I can enjoy that show.
Why do they celebrate chinese lunar year? Is it same between vietnam people and Chinese? Just curious but I love to watch this ur vlog about how they celebrate it
All of Asia celebrates Lunar New Year, it all goes back to China's influence over this side of the world from centuries ago. Vietnam was a part of China for many centuries, so there's a lot of Chinese influence that still remains visible everywhere.
You can travel anywhere you want. I used to think it was impossible... but there's a time in your life you just have to drop all your fears, gather up some money, and just go for it. ^^ I hope you're able to follow your dreams of travel one day! There are so many blogs out there that detail how you can travel, work while on the go, and live a very comfortable lifestyle anywhere in the world. ^^
Once you know the street names and the direction you're headed, it's pretty easy to figure out. Plus looking at a map of the Old Quarter, it usually has the Old Quarter area marked. Some streets aren't officially considered part of the OQ, but many on the street just bunch themselves in with the OQ area name.
Yeah, Thit Cho is dog meat. I didn't realize I was in front of a dog meat restaurant until I was editing the video. Thit Cho is common in Vietnam, I see it everywhere. And no, I have no interest in trying to eat dog here. I've had dog soup in Korea and dog meat a long time ago in Korea, because my mom's uncle used to have a dog meat farm in Gangneung, South Korea. I was 7 years old when I first ate dog meat in Korea, but I didn't know I was eating dog until after the meal. I'm against eating dog meat, but I can't judge a country for eating dog when I still eat chicken, beef, pork, fish, etc.
There's also ghost house and ghost puppet, and you might have figured it. The house will be serve as a shelter for the dead and the puppet act as maid/ house servant.
Can't blame when the chinese gave part of their culture with the colonial thing. Even in North America, there's a large viet christian community and buddhism who either believe in karma/hell/heaven.
Hello! Thanks for subscribing! ^^ I'm from Japan. But I am an American citizen. And I have no Japanese blood. I am half-Korean, half-white. I hope this helps explain why I look Asian. hehehe

But dog meat restaurants are common in Vietnam, unfortunately.
OMG, the chewing noises makes me feel like I'm watching ASMR. Love your vids though, Cory.
+Pam Jala hahaha sorry if it grosses you out! ^^
+Feed The Cory No worries, it doesn't gross me out so much as it makes me slightly uncomfortable. Other than that, great vid as always! ^_^
love your voice! :D
Thank you very much ^^
Cory, do you know what is the best thing of Tet holiday ? that is Táo Quân -a tranditional comedy show we just can see on this time, If you can understand Vietnamese and you will stay long in Viet nam, you should watch that
Thanks for the advice! I can't watch that show unless there are English subtitles. My Vietnamese language ability is very basic, very beginner style. hehehe Maybe one day, if I study a lot, I can enjoy that show.
+Feed The Cory Good luck
+Feed The Cory good luck with that, i wish someone can do English sub for you
Why do they celebrate chinese lunar year? Is it same between vietnam people and Chinese? Just curious but I love to watch this ur vlog about how they celebrate it
All of Asia celebrates Lunar New Year, it all goes back to China's influence over this side of the world from centuries ago.
Vietnam was a part of China for many centuries, so there's a lot of Chinese influence that still remains visible everywhere.
OMG meat skewer 🤗
I love skewered meat! I grew up in Japan eating yakitori street food... SOOOO GOOD!
Wish i was you , could travel any where i want . :(
You can travel anywhere you want.
I used to think it was impossible... but there's a time in your life you just have to drop all your fears, gather up some money, and just go for it. ^^
I hope you're able to follow your dreams of travel one day! There are so many blogs out there that detail how you can travel, work while on the go, and live a very comfortable lifestyle anywhere in the world. ^^
Feed The Cory : i'm 17s and even now my grand mother don't let me walk to school alone . '
How exactly do you tell that you have stumbled onto the old quarter in hanoi..?
This is a challenging question I know haha
Once you know the street names and the direction you're headed, it's pretty easy to figure out.
Plus looking at a map of the Old Quarter, it usually has the Old Quarter area marked.
Some streets aren't officially considered part of the OQ, but many on the street just bunch themselves in with the OQ area name.
The only Lunar New Year celebrations *I* have is the new Overwatch event. 😅
hehehe I don't play Overwatch but I heard about the event.
Feed The Cory you should play it, it's quite fun. ☺👍
In the beginning of the video, u stood in front of a store selling dog meats, 2018 is the year of the dog ! LOL
I know it was a dog meat restaurant, but I never made the connection to the year of the dog. What a weird coincidence.
I have never been to Vietnam.
You should visit! It's a very wonderful country with amazing culture and beautiful scenery. ^^
👍👍❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
My Vietnamese isn’t the greatest but did you do your video intro in front of a dog meat restaurant??? Have you tried it yet? Lol
What is ghost money?
It´s fake money. We burn it as offering for the dead. The vietnamese believe in an afterlife.
Chinese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese people use it. We believe that dead people are still alive in their world. We burn ghost money to send money to them.
There's also ghost house and ghost puppet, and you might have figured it. The house will be serve as a shelter for the dead and the puppet act as maid/ house servant.
Can't blame when the chinese gave part of their culture with the colonial thing. Even in North America, there's a large viet christian community and buddhism who either believe in karma/hell/heaven.
i'm new subscriber. where are you from Cory? i guess it's not Western, you look more like Asian.
Hello! Thanks for subscribing! ^^
I'm from Japan. But I am an American citizen.
And I have no Japanese blood. I am half-Korean, half-white.
I hope this helps explain why I look Asian. hehehe
The food looks delicious.I'm actually Jealous of you.
Thanks Sangi, and you should come to Hanoi and eat these delicious street foods too! ^^
