- Welcome to my $300 Tiny Rooftop Apartment Tour in downtown Hanoi, Vietnam!
I'm very excited about living in this new apartment! I have all the essentials, plus an outdoor patio deck with a garden pond, and an additional roof deck!
Living in Southeast Asia is extremely affordable. I really lucked out finding this place, though. This type of place can easily go for $500 or higher in Hanoi.
My location is very nice, it's only a 15-minute walk away from Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter area of Hanoi city.
I'm close to the French Quarter as well. Down the street is Ga Ha Noi (Hanoi's main train station). My neighborhood is full of street food, cafes, and nice little shops.

I feel like 95% of all apartments space is wasted in the western countries.
Its this "look i have a big house, i dont need it, neither can i afford it, but i have it" style.
Small spaces are just way more comfy aswell imo.
Which is directly reflected in the inflated cost.
That pond in itself is worth the 300.00 a month that whole layout is absolutely beautiful!

I wonder what the wages are? Where I live a good wage is 3 bucks and hour - my friend's wife gets 250 a month but free lunch to work as a secretary. My supervisor who is on about 5 bucks an hour pays 150 a month for a 3 bed apt.

Location is everything. What would this apartment rent for in New York City? It would be a million dollar condo for sure.
The romantic in me might clean up that roof and with that little table with the fire burning thingy all nice would make a sweet little dinner spot with a date overlooking that pond at night with some lights strung up.

Ikr? Can u imagine what that would cost here in America? So many of us have been priced out of the cities by the yuppies. I’m not complaining as I have a little cottage on the lake but it’s hard not driving living in the country. But as so many are being shoved out of the city, there are more transportation options coming so it’s ok. But I would like to move back to the. It’s just for the convince.
It's price fixing. They don't admit it, but with zillow they'll go, hey the apartment raised their rent next to me, so they'll as well. Repeat every year and every one feels the strain.
Everyon's saying only $300, and here I am like I wish it was more like $225, you have to remember that salary is lower in Vietnam, can't really compare only off of price, have to also know that if you move to Vietnam, you will probably make a lot less, therefore it's still really like a $900 apartment realistically. Maybe even as high as $1800 because I can guarantee average salaries are at least 3-6 times higher in USA.
@Holly Plyler I'm not referring to exceptions, there are exceptions to everything, I am speaking in averages. In addition, you don't think there is anyone in Vietnam that makes 33 cents an hour, 1/6 of $2? Either way, you're comment does not go against my comment, I can still guarantee you a waitress in America will make at least 3-6 times a waitress in Vietnam ON AVERAGE. This is when comparing restaurants in the same scale, therefore an average.
A $300 a mo. apartment is only cheap to us because we make ON AVERAGE at least 3-6 times more. Imagine making $4 per hour including all tips and looking at an apartment in America that is $800 per month. You may think it's incredibly expensive, until you realize, you do the exact same job and make $14 per hour instead of $4 and its basically like a $225 apartment over there.
What a gorgeous studio! Compared to the overpriced horrendously old outdated horrible apartmenta here in my city, this place looks like luxury. Wow

when I went to Vietnam, we stayed in s place like this, except for the fact that it was swimming pool instead of a pond..it was so damn refreshing, specially at night!! Totally being nostalgic

You just get a healthy climb each day. Your heart workout is done after 1 climb. The hotel I stay at in Nha Trang is a 7 story climb. Really not that bad.

As a Vietnam Vet (a US Army frogman in the Mekong Delta - 1968), it did my heart good to see such a well adjusted (and creative) young man living in a city that used to represent a totally different view to me when I was your age. What's the market price for a place like that in 2020?
The waterfall and fountain spout is probably to keep the water moving. Would help with mosquitoes since they like stagnant water.
The water features add oxygen to the water, which helps fish and hinders algae. Having that thing turned off all the time is probably causing part of your Green issue.
Pump oxgyen into the water and it will clean up the green out of it. Do not add more fish until you clean all that mess out. The easiest way is pumping oxgyen into the thing.
Exactly. If the noise is unpleasant, at least run the water when you’re out to keep it oxygenated and circulating.
It's a steal for 300$. Better the owner just dry the pond and convert to a bigger outdoor space. Not ideal if the pond will not be maintain properly. A breeding of mosquitoes 🦟 which is not a good thing

Thing's like that in the states are crazy expensive. As I've said in other comments in this section I'm in a studio n given what Tennessee has to offer n the prices I'm in a relatively cheap place but it's a nicer part of the city .... You can't find what you have in the states n if you do more than likely it's slum

To make it more zen though you just need to sink the pipe down slightly below the surface, the water pressure will still stir the water and create some noise but it won't sound like peeing.
When I saw the thumbnail it honestly looked like it was clickbait especially for $300 a month but when I actually saw the video and the apartment looked exactly like the thumbnail I was shocked!
hahaha I think all thumbnails these days are partially clickbait, because that's the way things are now. People have to try and get viewers to click and watch their videos, and catchy/clickbait titles and thumbnails are the only way to do that. With RUclips's insane algorithm changes all the time, viewers are not receiving notifications from their favorite channels even after clicking the notification bell.

Propane tank stoves are still quite common in Greece and Turkey as well. It’s no big deal. Till you are cooking something and the tank runs out right in the middle of the cooking...

Spain! In the old centre of Valencia, they are using propane tanks for stove, heath and hot water. Rural areas in Romania as well use propane tanks for the stove.
In Mexico we use gas tanks too. They thought it was weird when people hear that we get it with pipes in USA.
Same in Uruguay. Worst thing, as you said, running out of gas in the middle of cooking.

I know the waterfall probably doesn’t sound the best to you, but water flow provides oxygen to the fish. The water looks super stagnant.

Besides having that washing machine on the other side of a thin wall, that's just perfect. I love the place.
You only need the washing machine every couple of weeks, so having one using up space in an apartment seems like a waste of space tbh.
I also love it... My husband n I have had houses in the past but are in a studio apt and I'm not going anywhere... It's small but it fits me since he travels for work 95% of the time
I love how the sleeping area has big windows and lets in a lot of light and has a view of the pond and greenery. I just can imagine how beautiful it would look like if the pond has clean water and the plants replaced then add some potted plants too. Definitely a design inspiration- Im gonna copy that design... haha
Yes! In the mornings, I open the curtains and enjoy my coffee looking out at the view of the pond. It's a little too cold to do that because it's still winter right now. But I can't wait for warmer weather to be able to hang outside all the time! I want to so many things out there on the patio.
I definitely have my ideas about the pond as well. I'd love for it to be cleaned and put new plants everywhere. And I want a lot more fish!
There are 3 fish and I barely ever see them. In the 3 weeks I've lived here, I've seen them maybe 2 times.
Just love it and it's so inspiring! Good for you! Btw, summertime in Hanoi is like living hell, the heat is burning your skin, nose and lung out! But the great thing is that pond is awesome, makes me wondering the architecture landlord' whole house layout, could be great as well.

I can literally carry all of my belongings in my backpack, rolling luggage, and my camera lights and tripod on my shoulder.

You can also get dragonfly larvae, they will actively hunt the mosquito larvae.
You need to place many rocks, probably fist-size or smaller, to make the pond sound melodious. The reason brooks and streams sound so lovely is the water changing speed and direction as it moves through the rocks and plants. Lilly pads will help keep the water clear. So will some more water plants. And they will give you Amazing shadows at night. The fountain really should be running 24-7 to keep the water aerated. The fish will thank you for the air and the shade.
See if your landlord is willing to contribute to the plant (& planter) fund. If he is, go for the nicest planters you can heft up the stairs. Some things you only want to do once. It would make the architect happy. And be an investment in his investment (tax write-off). You could even ask for floating lamps.
I think the large clay pot is used to catch rain water.
Your place is Stunning! I would be tempted to inter-space vegetable and palm trees at the edge of the upper roof. Privacy plus food. You could let a cucumber or squash plant grow past the window. And have pots of bamboo plants circling the water towers. Given the climate you could create your own environment. Turn the satellite dish over and plant a tree at the edge of the roof-line.
Suspend the rusted bike from the abandoned and rusted clothing rack. Use chain to hang the bike from the rack couple of S-hooks to attach the chain, lean it up against a wall and ta da.
If you can figure out a Murphy-bed you'd have more than enough room to entertain friends on rainy afternoons.
Set the chairs in a circle around the fire-stove. You should be able to burn coal in it as well. Just have a jug of water nearby. Or bring two of the chairs down to the main level to circle the table Slat chairs are easy to fix. And easy to move from outside to in. If you found a folding table that could store on the balcony you could even invite multiple people over for dinner. Go hang out with the artsies. They usually have the best time.
Or you can get a bunch of large uusions to turn your bed into a sofa.
Which is an awful lot to drag up 6 flights. You must have legs of steel. My knees salute you.

I've disconnected the pipe leading to that spout in the middle of the pond, so now water just comes out from the source water pipe. It's coming out sideways, instead of pointing straight up, so it creates a counter-clockwise current in the pond while also aerating it. Plus there's a valve I can control to flow of the water coming out, so I have it so the water shoots out but it's much quieter than the spout shooting upwards.
I like the ideas about setting up some trees/bushes on the roof-line. Suspending the bike from the clothing rack sounds cool but I think I'm going to disassemble the rack, it's sooo rusty and wobbly, probably not good to hang anything on it.

In Alabama I paid 250.00 rent a month for a four bedroom home with a den and living room kitchen and dining room and an in ground pool. Many times people inherit homes and rent them out, they are family homes and it was right next to the school where I worked .. I couldn’t believe the houses and rent when I finally decided to rent. These are typically older country homes built in the 50s or 60s and kept up .. even a fireplace and room for my pool table .. it had a barn and on 2 acres of land .. this was just a few years ago. My husband is a landlord in Louisiana now and rents homes for 800.00 a month ... much smaller than what I lived in in Alabama. I rented three homes in my lifetime and all under 500 and spacious but Alabama is the only place I know where that would happen.
Linda Lowther it’s crazy. I didn’t go through a company though just asked around and friends of friends found the rent houses I needed. We had some of the best times and not a lot of stress at least from rent. Lol I don’t know what the rent is on those houses now I know one was purchased for little or nothing and fixed up to almost brand new but they weren’t bad houses. That’s the way it is mostly here .. you can’t get anything for under 800 some maybe 600 .. but I was lucky to have found those when I needed them the most for sure.

I mean I csnt post pics here but they were in the country .. just quaint little places, well one was on Hwy 331 in Alabama near a school there .. the area is nice we had a dollar general and few grocery stores our school was ‘ k-12 with about 900 kids total in the area .. it’s a main Hwy that takes you to the beaches of Florida if you just follow it through lol .... central location and the other one was on the outskirts of a town called Greenville Alabama .. nice places
Linda Lowther I don’t know what rent is there now for sure but I do have some friends there who may still rent out nice places for 300.00 400.00 and 500.00 which is still relatively cheap .. it’s nice there if you don’t mind living in the country and it’s a beautiful little area .. I moved from there a few years ago but rented here in Louisiana for 700 a month all utilities and fully furnished and ended up keeping a rental in Alabama for a while after until I fixed up my grandmothers older home ... I’d never rent that out it is over 150 years old and it’s nearly just like it was (made from cypress) when she was alive except for a few electrical issues. It’s such a gem .. I love the front porch swing and going out at night and swinging on the porch listening to the crickets and such when I visit my family there, right now we are stuck in our homes because of the COVID praying none get it and we can get back to our visits and such but for now we are in and not going anywhere at all. There are some people who have just retired and have all they need and then their parents pass away and they inherit a house and instead of “keeping it up” themselves just rent it out just to keep people in it so it won’t wear down and such .. now I called them for big repairs but for little repairs I did myself so that may be why it was so cheap and I cut my own grass and such .. they didn’t do that .. just little things .. but as far as the big repairs they did ..
U cant just bluntly say stupid stuff like that. U have to look at currency, wages etc. 300 usd for a ridiculously small apartment with no elevator is ridiculously UNAFFORDABLE for the local Vietnamese. Dont be so ignorrant.

**Update video: there is none. I moved out of this place in January 2018, after living there for 1 year.
Nothing changed during that time, except the pond was cleaned and more fish were added.
**Door Lock: There is a lock on my door, it might not be visible in the video, which is why everyone is commenting that I have no lock. Trust me, I wouldn't live in a place with no lock. Also, the 1st floor is locked by a key as well. The landlord and his entire family live on the floors below me. The 1st floor is their family kitchen and TV room. If anyone tries to even come into the 1st floor, they'll be chilling with my landlord and his parents.
**Mosquitoes & The Pond: Don't worry, there are 6 medium sized goldfish and 10 golden algae eaters to help eat mosquito larvae in the water. And I've fixed the tip of the water spout to spray out like an umbrella, so it's quiet and still aerates the water. I've found I have ZERO mosquitoes here, surprisingly. I leave my windows open all day for the cross breeze, but shut it at night to keep out moths.
**Shower: My bathroom is what's known as a "wet bathroom" here in Asia. It's the most common type of bathroom in all of Asia. I grew up using wet bathrooms in Japan, and also used them when I was in Korea. Every Asian country I've been to (Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, and Singapore) have all had wet bathrooms. I prefer wet bathrooms over western/American style ones, because whenever I need to clean the bathroom I can easily just hose everything down.
In this apartment, when I shower, the only thing that gets wet is the general area where I'm standing. The toilet, toilet paper, sink counter, and mirror are all completely dry while I shower.

Hey Cory, Thanks for the tour 🦚 A few things, The fish are probably hanging out at the bottom because they need shade, If you put some more aquatic plants in the pond they will provide shade and clean up the water, If you plant some large leaved plants in the strip, such as, banana you can block out some neighbors and soften street noises, Using the coat rack, string, rope or wire & big pots up top you can plant some morning glories or some other fast growing vines and create a screen. 🚲 I like your idea of growing vines on that old bike. I live in Hanoi. Its so cheap it's ridiculous. I rented top two floors of a new terrace house (inhabited by family below) for 220 a month. 60m2. Two bathrooms balconies etc
Damn! You scored! What district do you live in to get that low price??? My place is expensive compared to what other expats pay, but I don't mind to pay a little more for privacy and no shared housemates. The private roof and private pond and the central location are worth $300 in my book. ^^

Very practical. Functionality is a a running theme in Asian design . No frivolity. The Zen garden pond and deck is everything. Water sounds can drown out the big city sounds. That old bike would be very cool on a wall or as garden ornament.
Ideal place for balling out with a blunt, but don’t fall off that roof cause you’ll really be fukked up.

My best friends apartment is a big old houses attic. It sucks walking up the three flights of stairs outside because the home is owned by someone and his attic is separated, but so cool. A huge open area with a loft bedroom and they pay $400 a month all expenses included

As someone who is Vietnamese, the propane stove tank is accurate and very normal.
It seems that it's very normal in most countries except the America. All the weird comments I got about propane tanks were from Americans who had never seen propane tanks used inside a house. Americans think it's only for BBQs outside or for RV motor homes.
Feed The Cory oh no, in Vietnam we used the propane tanks for heat and fire :) Even my family that come and visit from Vietnam always laugh at how Americans use stoves so we usually have a propane stove set up in our backyard because we're use to it an the functions. I even forget I'm using a American stove sometimes and open the oven thinking the tank is going to be there but nope just pots and pans😂

Yeah, definitely makes the small inside space seem just a little bit larger. It's already big enough for me, so those tuck away features are an added bonus. ^^

Feed The Cory Dude, idk how to contact you, but I think that price of this appartment is heavily influenced by the Vietnamese average salary. So as cheap as it seems to you, may not be reality for people in there. Do you live of RUclips? Or unemployment benefit? I don't think that work in Vietnam would bring any decent money, unless they are in demand for english teachers.

loooove wet bathrooms. I've heard they're common in France and Southern European places as well. Really wish it was more common in America, it's an incredibly smart design. Oh really? France and southern Europe as well? That's good to know. ^^ When I was in Italy, I didn't see any wet bathrooms, but every toilet had a bidet hose, and some bathrooms even had a separate bidet toilet next to the regular toilet. Interesting!

What a neat apartment and you seem to be so close to major areas. 6 flights of stairs will be good exercise for you. All the features inside really look nice and modern and for $300 a month, I think you got a good deal. I am looking forward to seeing your pool all spruced up with clear water. My only concern is your outdoor stairs...it really looks steep! Unless you entertain a lot, the size of the apartment seems fine plus you can always go outside if you ever feel the walls closing in on you. Enjoy your new home!
Yeah, the stairs were dreadful for the first few days, but now it's nothing to me. Good exercise is correct! lol
I definitely don't entertain a lot. I'm very introverted so not having anyone over is the best situation I could hope for. hahaha

When was the last time you were in Hanoi? This apartment is like a diamond in the rough. Most places are not as nice as this, with no windows, moldy walls, rat-infested kitchens with roaches everywhere, etc. It all just depends on where you live, and what you're looking for. You can find those dumpy places, or find really swanky nice luxury apartments, if you're willing to pay for that.

Actually the landlord will not remodel the pond, I don't think I ever said he was going to remodel it. I just wanted him to clean it. hehehe
Anyway, progress is slow since the landlord and I already cleaned the pond once, but within 1 week the algae came right back, but not as bright green as in the video.

This apartment is soooo cool and beautiful. Great thing about our generation is that we don’t need to stuck in our own countries that charge 700$ for tiny tiny apartment with no sunlight forever and choose wherever we want to live. Im going to escape from my tiny dark expansive apartment someday and move to one of those countries that have bright big cheap flats.
You're right Jenn! I paid $800 for a place smaller than this in America, it had almost no windows and no bathroom sink. I also was splitting a $1600 studio in DC with a roommate in a space about this big. Rent in America is just so crazy, people have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to have a house. It's not the "American Dream" I had, so I left. I'll never live in America ever again. ^^
You should definitely up-and-go to a new country! We only have one life and we should follow our dreams to make us happy and see and experience the world!

I'm living in Bangkok since almost 1 year and I love it so much. Staying in a very central condominium on the 27th floor, just 30 m2 but with huge windows and Skyline view as well as balcony. The condominium includes a big swimming pool, rooftop garden, lobby, 4 saunas, gym and a small Supermarket that has open 24 hours. The best is the streetfood in front of it. All for 350 € (including electricity and water). No way I am gonna move back to Germany
The cost of living in southeast Asia is the best!!! ^^

I would move into the apt in a heartbeat, I love it. My only concern is, what about rain drainage. The roof above your apt is a cool area, but where does all the water go when it rains really hard? It seems as though it would pour down to your patio area below, which is so close to your home area.
I can't believe it's that cheap, and you get so much space. Can you please do another video showing the changes to the rooftop and the pond after the landlord does his thing with it.

There's a covered drain in the corner of the roof area under the water tanks. The surface of the roof isn't very slanted, so some of the heavier rainy days brings a bunch of water that kind of sits there for a bit. I've cleaned the drain covering to allow more water to flow, and I also use a broom to sweep most of the water towards the drain.
I don't think the rain will drain down off the roof and into the pond, there's an actual cement lip on the edge so the water would need to be pretty high to overflow off the edge. We're just getting into rainier times, so we'll see just how crazy it will get in the coming months. ^^
So far, no problems. ^^

Yeah, I wake up around 6:30am every morning and first thing I do is look at the pond to see if the fish are up and eating bugs. That's usually when they're active and up at the surface.
It's 8:10am right now and I've been up drinking coffee and responding to comments for an hour, and this view is just great!
Man, propane sets like that are extremely normal. Most of the world uses it like that.

People were linking US TV news report clips of homes blowing up, etc saying I was going to die... it was absurd. That's the only reason I made my statement in this video. hehehe

Not in the UK that would be illegal for obvious reasons besides common sense. I’ve never seen any dwelling without a gas boiler on a wall that’s a health and safety nightmare gas tanks are used outside on caravans aka Americans a trailer not enclosed small areas inside wow this is a first for me I’ve never anywhere in the world seen that so to read it’s normal and most of the world uses it not to my knowledge or actual observations from a personal and professional perspective they don’t as cool as that place is nah no boiler next, just a cheap gas tank possibly projectile ticking time bomb which does happen regularly so i get people’s comments 100%. Nice place good video but never i won’t even say “rather you than me”
It happens way less often than you think JB, only when people buy cheap, low quality refilled tanks from unauthorized sellers (most common with street vendors that want to cut cost)
JB it could blow up if you turn on the stove and leave it as it is, like pumping the gas without lighing it up with fire, and if a lot of it got out and you lighted a fire it could blow up. But it has to run like more then half a day i think for i to get out that much. My country uses it for a looooong time and I think we didnt have any incidnts with ppl's houses blowing up
We also some time use in Italy but we can't put inside the house but only outside for security reasons.

Yeah! I been following the tiny home movement for a few years. There's some great RUclips channels out there showing tiny homes around the world.
One of my dreams is to build a self-sustainable Earthship/tiny home type of place in nature... whether in the mountains or near a beach. (Beach preferably. lol)
