Transparent pixels on images still store color data. The blue halo effect you see on textures with transparent parts is because those transparent pixels are still blue and when the game engine smoothes out the pixelated texture it draws from the colors of nearby pixels and grabs the blue. To fix this, color the transparent pixels with something like the average color of the rest of the texture and then make them transparent again. Edit: oh somebody beat me to it. Don't use black for the transparent pixels because it can create a black halo/outline effect. Use a color that matches the rest of the texture.

Not sure if you know this, but VTFedit has a batch converter. You can put all the textures in a folder and convert everything within that folder at the same time, WAY easier than doing them one by one. I wish I knew that long ago.

A couple years ago i tried to import the half life blue shift maps into gmod and i ran into some issues with how the map was converted, leading to most textures not lining up correctly with the level geometry.
