Alyssa is all about great ideas on this trip 1. Why don’t we get food before we charge the car and then eat it while charging! 2. Let’s get a Rivian R1S
Do more old school roadtrips together like this video. What made me interested in your channel back in the day. New stuff is interesting, but sometimes exploring with a fun EV is a great escape. And now I want to go to Zion 😂
Hoodie in 108 - 113 degrees and heavy long pants, complains that he has to keep A/C fan ripping constantly in the R1S, slowing down charging times at chargers and effecting range which he complains about also. Not a good look, when giving a honest review. Come on Kyle!
If you open the Tesla app at the location, select the charger you will be charging at, then as soon as you plug it into your Rivian start the charging session on the Tesla app and it will bypass the handshake with Rivian and bill directly from Tesla and apply your discounted rate if you purchased their monthly pass. It has worked flawlessly for me so far.
Re: Kyle's surprise at the price of EV charging in CA--No, driving an ICE car is not cheaper. It would cost well over $110 to fill up an equivalent 7-seat SUV. Average price/gallon ~$5.
Can confirm. LX570. Premium. Easily close to $100 and if it was a daily driver I'd fill up every 5 days. Premium is at like 4.80 a gal right now by me.
In a real road trip, the initial charge to 100% would normally be done at home, meaning very cheap electricity rates. The superchargers would be used only later on in the trip, after the battery depletes.
Hi from here in the UK. Gallon of gas (taking into account your smaller gallon) is about $7 for regular, fast charging (non-Tesla) is around $1 per kilowatt, Tesla about half that on average. Best to charge at home as some tariffs give 10c per kW overnight
Right, but you're going to get 750 miles plus of range on that tank, not 350-400. So you'd about have to double what they paid here which puts them in the same ballpark.
I had the pleasure(?) of rolling up on a dead RAN site post thunderstorms once with techs on site and got to be the tester (they were overjoyed given I had a low SoC and could hit 220kw). They told me they do bring online modules as it ramps, it takes longer when they haven't been used for a while. The last one kicks in around 194kw and pushes it over 200kw. Techs were super nice and was definitely happy to see them when I rolled up with 12% and saw the entire thing red lol
Glad to see you take off the hoodie & smell the roses. You scored solid gold with Alyssa as your co-pilot! Enjoy her and your time together as much as possible.
Instead of leaving it in pet mode for the whole charging curve, why not just use the app and turn on the climate control as you're mid- late way through your meal? Love, love, love the R1S. Thanks for all the great content and education!
Kyle, you are so right. I drove my F150 Lightning from AL to OH. I used couple of dealerships chargers under Ford Blue Oval network and the per cent kWh is .59 at one that I went to in Louisville. Like you mentioned in the video. It is not cheaper than gasoline. You are so right. These prices has to be reduced.
There are filters to help with the route planning. Don’t just hit “go” if you want to customize route planning. Hit the filters “three bars” and adjust: *arrival SOC *networks to use (tesla, Rivian, ea, +more) *drive mode *towing load if applicable Then if you want you can save these filters. My guess is that the last time someone was route planning on this truck before you reset they filtered out all the other chargers and saved it. Honestly their mapping is pretty good but accessing this route planning settings once you have a calculated route is very cumbersome. Thanks for the great videos!
Man, this video brings back memories of your summer 2020 trip, minus the pups. It was fun driving around new areas and just seeing all these cool places most of us don't normally see.
Whoever used the car before you change the settings for adding chargers. I'm sure you figured it out by now, wasn't a glitch. The other reset mode is hold the outside left and the outside right button on the steering wheel.
What settings could the previous driver changed to remove all charging stops? I’m not sure why the trip planner would remove charging stops when they’re needed.
it's useful when the route planner is too aggressive. I just got a Tesla and wanted to test the range but it kept adding charging stops so I turned it off for the test. most of the time best to keep it on though@@EVandMe
Alyssa's natural realism counteracts Kyle's Big Labrador Energy so well. A much fairer review of the R1S and a really good one. Wish I could afford one of these, they look fantastic.
Love the rating Rivian are using on their Route planner, really looking forward to gen 2 impressions. Totally awesome EV company, we have a pile of Rivians R1S and R1T's Gen 1 on the BC Sunshine coast and everyone just plain loves them! I can see why!
They cool VERY fast. Mine was 140 inside, 103 outside temp and was being blasted by the sun. It cooled so fast I didn't even have the chance to start sweating. And I have stock window tint.
For about ten minutes, in the blue t-shirt underneath the hoodie. After 10 minutes the hoodie was back on in that day heat, before the evening cool down. Lol
As an ultra-distance runner and cyclist in Texas, it’s so frustrating to see people make poor clothing choices and then complain about the heat. But then I don’t think I’d know as much about how it matters if I wasn’t. Anyway, thin and lightweight loose clothes, sandals instead of shoes and socks, finding shade when you can, parking your windshield facing away from the sun… little tricks turn a miserable place into way cooler. Also, you don’t need to leave the AC on the entire time you are away from the car eating. You just leave your windows cracked and start your car remotely a few minutes before getting back in and it’ll be fine.
For deflating, just use that quick connect adapter without the hose. When you attach the adapter to tire, it will start deflating and I think it's pretty fast
I haven't test driven the Gen 2 tri-motor yet, but my gut tells me that is the spec to get. All the efficiency of the dual motor, plus the max pack is standard, with some of the added umph (850hp, 1100 lb/ft torque if I remember) of the quad motor, and should have great off-road capabilities. I'm not really into max performance driving, so the 1025 hp of the quad motor doesn't fit my use case as it will for some people. The tri-motor just seems like the perfect balance overall and is the one I'm looking to get.
There's also a charging station in Pasadena, Ca. Between San Pascual Ave & Del Mar Blvd, just east of Lake Ave. Behind the Ross Store/Pacific Sales (Kitchen & Home) ...🤗🤗
Early on, when the route planing choses chargers sooner than Kyle would, I suspect that is the backend of ABRP optimizing shortest TRIP TIME vs fewest stops. While still waiting for my R1 order, I have spent a good bit of time "pre-gaming" several road trips using ABRP, Plug Share and any number of other charging location sites. In ABRP (rivian owned) there are MANY options to change how the algorithm routes you. The standard is shortest TOTAL trip time. In forum discussions on the same, everyone notes that ABRP will prefer more frequent stops that maximize charging curve speeds vs longer drives between stops. Basically, you can charge the miles back faster than you can take them off. So it's better to drive 85 and stop to fast charge from 10-65% than it is to drive longer and then go 10-90% etc. ABRP builds in time spent deviating from route, plugging in etc (adjustable) and adds that to its equation. An interesting video would be testing different routing systems, plans vs real world...
At 1:06:13 my Lightning is an ice box if I want it to be. I’ve been in 112° temps and been chilly in the Lightning. Sure it doesn’t charge at fast, but at least it can stay cool. But Tesla Chargers are always slower for me than a good EA station once I come off the boost.
Nice to see that someone is finally talking about thermo behavior both with EV batteries and charging. Right now, forecast are showing over 40% of the country is in or will be in triple digits and this is happening more frequently. Seems most EV and charging reviews only discuss performance in low temps which for many, never happens. Right now my two EVs are sitting in my attached garage which is showing a temp of 38.5c, outside temp is 42.8c. Would love to see more discussion on EV/charging performance in high temps. What impact higher temperatures have of battery degradation and what are the concerns for V2H/V2G use in high temps? Thanks as always. Since I live in SoCal desert, I will hold off on considering a Rivian until better thermal performance is confirmed.
Why worry about stall torque? The proper technique is to never stop in the first place. I don’t mean to go fast, just keep a constant 1 or 2 mph. That way the momentum of the vehicle helps bump over small obstacles. And stall torque is never an issue.
Looks like you started out at the Arroyo-Glenarm station. There's a bunch of other cheaper superchargers around Pasadena like on Lake or Green that are way cheaper, even accounting for parking costs.
I own a 2024 dual motor R1T, I agree with Kyle, there is 100% a thunk especially accelerating on the highway. That being said, I don't find it that annoying.
I have a launch 2023 large pack R1S and I find the key for pet mode is to get the interior very cold prior to stopping and placing in pet mode as well as tinted side glass, front windshield with shade protection (it wasn’t legal to have front windshield tinted in Nevada when I got mine done, and to use roof shades too - which also helps keep our large dogs cooler). If I do this, it can usually keep the temps lower and allow fan speed to be higher than 2. At least now we can increase it to much higher when driving. The highest I’ve had it get in 100 degree temps is 70 when set to 68. I do wish we could set pet mode to a much lower temp - at least to 65.
I wonder if the thermals have improved in the new gen 2 battery packs - I'm severely bummed out by that... especially because I have a camper I want to tow with an R1S.
The Pasadena glenarm station is always slow. There's a shell recharge nearby that is cheaper and faster though the night rates on Tesla are better. We have tenants that only supercharged until we put in a level 2 autel for them to share. Found out after I bought the autel that they now have a nacs maxicharger. Roof sun shade helps for this enormous aquarium. Sport mode locks in AWD as do the other modes. Reducing stability also keeps it in AWD longer.
Kyle you said something that made me think a bit when you were talking about the dual motor vs quad for rock crawling situations. I'm thinking dual may be better even without diff lock because of the zero rpm stall torque problem. By allowing the wheel without traction to rotate a bit and then grabbing that brake they can achieve motor rotation and then some momentum transfer to get moving. 🤔
The Dual Max is such a perfect vehicle. At this point i'm waiting for either the F-150 to increase the range or Rivian to give the option for Apple/Android car play.
I would love if my Honda e could charge at anything more than 50kw. I once plugged in at a 50 and it was only pulling 17 ! Thankfully it's a city car and doesn't do many roadtrips.
I appreciate this! Can you do one with the 2025 version 2 of the R1S? I’m so curious about this new one and honestly think that’s going to be the new car we get in the future. 😊 Thank you for doing these! Way more important to hear about the real world use.
You can actually use the attachment to air down the tires very quickly. Just unplug it from the air hose and the attachment by itself will just let the air out super fast.
Great video. You hinted a little on how the dual motor does off-road, which is my #1 question. Hopefully you throw some all terrain tires on and put it to the test. A gen 1 dual performance may be a good trail rig.
Kyle nice to see you tap your phone on the ea member spot . Easy way to do it. Ea open a site with new chargers. Last week in Moab . Tfl baught a condo in Moab to stay wyle testing .
My Ford hybrid had a super smooth restart on the ICE, but it was obvious to my father the mechanical engineer. I could tell once I had driven it enough to recognize what he could sense. Over 230K miles on that car. I'd have a hybrid now, but they did not come with a spare tire anymore.
There are ZERO Rivian adventure network chargers in the entire state of Utah. Let that sink in.... All that outdoor adventure and ZERO RAN chargers. Why? 😭. Maybe not enough government subsidy, i dunno.
Glad to see my e-Golf is not the only car struggling in the heat lol By the way, would you do some charge testing with your egolf? I'm assuming now you'll be getting rapidgating on the first charge.
Oh Kyle with the gas prices. $60 to add 70% SoC. Chevy Tahoe 70% tank is is 16.8 galons x $4.90/gal (average) gas price = $82.32... 17mpg combined x 24 gal tank is also 408 miles of range (in theory), similar to Rivian.
I'm a Software Engineer who has helped build all kinds of cloud based SaaS products. Just total speculation, but I could see this happening when something on the backend is broken. Especially since it was taking so long to calculate routes. Essentially, services that are built resiliently will run in various degraded modes when traffic gets too high, some dependent system/service is having an issue, etc. So essentially you still get some of the functionality, but not all of it, and it might be slow/flaky. Not desirable, but that is way better than being completely broken and leaving people stranded. I used to work at a company where our outages would easily turn into news headlines, so it's just a necessary way to keep things working no matter what is broken behind the scenes. Or it could be as simple as the internet connectivity or vehicle software itself was being flaky and the reset fixed everything up.
Kyle I need advice!! Take advantage of used R1S Gen 1 prices ($20k to $35k below MSRP) or fork out for an R1S Gen 2 due to improvements especially what I am hearing about the suspension and ride quality changes? Please help lol
A bummer to hear they won't be able to fix the thermals in the refreshed Rivian. Even Tesla doesn't have this down yet. Driving across the middle of nowhere Texas last year in a Model Y.. even with the AC set to 85, then totally off, it didn't have enough cooling capacity to deal with that heat. It reduces the range way way down too in that kind of heat. I literally had to turn around about 20 minutes into a trip leg and go back to the Supercharger (after I charged to 90%) because I couldn’t make it to the next stop. Basically just killed time for 2-3 hours until it got dark so I could keep going.
Hello Get video, but I know how to do a reset on my iPhone Can you please show us how to do a Rivian reset. You cut that part out.😮 Keep up with your great INFO!!!
To echo the other "108+ degree heat and he's wearing a hoodie?!" comments; someone has never driven across Texas in the summer in a car with no AC, and it shows!
Yeah~~~I would never charge my car at a rate that's over $0.67/kwh Superchargers in Denver aren't cheap either unless you charge after midnight. Let's say about $0.35/kwh on average. Atlanta is very cheap, and one major station with 250kw max speed was $0.15/kwh all day long. Plus, Atlanta has A LOT of Supercharging stations. Of course, when you charge it at home, it will be about $0.10/kwh in Orange County, so it will be about 1/6 of $60 to charge the R1S max pack to 100%.
Alyssa is all about great ideas on this trip

EA just opened in Moab last week which should help at least
On our trip to Moab from CA, every single EA derated for long periods on our Rivian. Outside temps low to high 90s. Will try wet rag on way back
I do find it weird that out there where it is going to be ripping hot, they would not add a small awning overhead.
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth..
.. Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste
🙏🏻 😊 ✌ ☮ ❤
LUV Antica Forma Pizza and Pasta when we were in Moab last Year!!! Kudos!!!
Glad to see my e-Golf is not the only car struggling in the heat lol
By the way, would you do some charge testing with your egolf? I'm assuming now you'll be getting rapidgating on the first charge.
If you don’t want the rear to disconnect, just set the stability to reduced (or be in All Terrain which is the best mode for everything IMO lol)
This video has more advertisements than my TV shows.
The gen 1 vs gen 2 and dual motor offroad thoughts are what i was hoping for! Reaffirms my plan of going for gen 2 dual motor max pack.
Here in St Pete Fl my Taycan charged on Magic Dock @ $0.43 / kWh. Not bad!
Need to start identifying the refreshed versions in the title. R1S V1 V2 or whatever.
What's with the pants and hoodie in 100°F temps? 🤦🏻♂️
Thank for making these videos. Well done guys!
Great video. Really enjoyed it! Thanks

@ 19:48 Whoow! A Dacia Duster in the US! 😀
set your preferred range on arrival in trip planner to resolve early charging stops 🤟
Kyle I need advice!!
Take advantage of used R1S Gen 1 prices ($20k to $35k below MSRP) or fork out for an R1S Gen 2 due to improvements especially what I am hearing about the suspension and ride quality changes? Please help lol
Saving $20k to $35K is a powerful argument for the older vehicle.
When charging do you ever just chill, put on music and relax? It’s like living with a math teacher. 😊
Have you noticed any noise in the heat as you were testing, did a demo on a hot day and noticed the compressor kick on at time.
You need to check on a v4 supercharger (dispenser) if it also derates so quick.
Hello Get video, but I know how to do a reset on my iPhone
Can you please show us how to do a Rivian reset. You cut that part out.😮
Keep up with your great INFO!!!
How many hours at 80 mph can you drive on the highway for before needing to recharge?
Probably about 4 hours if starting at a full charge.
330/80=4.125 hours
I really like your road trip videos! You need more lol
To echo the other "108+ degree heat and he's wearing a hoodie?!" comments; someone has never driven across Texas in the summer in a car with no AC, and it shows!
Any chance of a Rustic Ring test with that 2 motor R1S. Interested in what consumption would be like.
Yeah~~~I would never charge my car at a rate that's over $0.67/kwh
Superchargers in Denver aren't cheap either unless you charge after midnight.
12:50 Ride feel in SOFT is way too bouncy (for my taste). Can't wait to hear your impressions as the video plays out.
i find that it's pretty bouncy on rough roads, what do you use? stiff or medium or whatever it's called i forget
The end. “You didn’t watch the rivian video? No. It was a short one it was 2 hours long. “ 😂😂😂😂
