    Great video. I needed this info in order to do a mild, driveable build on my C5 Z06. I will be contacting Pat.

    Agree. I have a c6 ls3 car, wanted more power so I did some bolt ons headers and a BTR stage 2 cam with ls7 lifters and other supporting valve train components. Car made 480rwhp which feels delightful, chops pretty dang good with the npp open, and it drives 90 percent like stock. Only thing I notice is a very very subtle surge around 1400 rpms most people wouldn’t even notice, and pulling out at like a gas station below 5mph it will want to buck but if you clutch it right or let it roll you never notice it. Best mod I’ve done yet hands down.

      Backyard Boosters Good deal! I can’t understand guys that go with huge cams and then complain about driveability. And a smaller cam gives you useable power as well. Glad you’re happy!

      SQ_TierHog You bet! Just FYI my cam is basically a BTR stage 2. If you talk to AHP and want a mild cam have them compare what they offer to the BTR 2. Enjoy!

    • @SQTierHog
      @SQTierHog 6 лет назад

      I will do that. Yeah, I think I'll give them the car for the heads work, might as well get something along the lines of what you've got. Do you have another vid that you talk about the how's and why's of the decision to do cam work? I understand the head issue. Also, you probably shipped them your original heads? Or did you send your heads for a core? I'm gonna assume that the heads on my car haven''t been done. But, if they're original, I'd like to keep it that way.

    • @ZWHOA6Productions
      @ZWHOA6Productions  6 лет назад

      SQ_TierHog I had AHP ship me fixed heads and I sent mine back for core exchange. Just so you know, I actually didn’t do the cam at the time I did my heads. I drove the car for about a year with the fixed heads before deciding to do a cam. Have you ever had a vette with a bigger aftermarket cam in it? I had previous experience so I knew what I was getting. You will always lose a little drivability with a bigger than stock cam. It’s all in the tune. From what I hear AHP has a great tuner. If you’re ok with less than stock drivability then I absolutely recommend going with a mild cam. If not then I would keep the stock cam for a while and you can always update it later. Good luck!

    • @SQTierHog
      @SQTierHog 6 лет назад

      No, I haven't experienced an aftermarket cam. Did you do it for the sound? or was (is) the original cam an under performer? As far as the head swap goes, I would think folks would want to keep all the original parts? If not, then, I might as well do the swap like you did. Also, I'm mechanically inclined, have worked on all of my cars. Did you pull/install the heads yourself? By the way, I highly appreciate you taking time and giving me feedback!

    • @ZWHOA6Productions
      @ZWHOA6Productions  6 лет назад

      SQ_TierHog I did it for the bump in power. The stock cam is a great performer! But once you’ve experienced and gotten used to a bigger cam it’s addicting and that extra 50-75hp is like a drug. Lol. I did not do the head work myself. I had a shop do the R&R. The exchanged heads actually are original since the AHP heads are stock LS7 GM castings, but modified to your liking. If you can do the work yourself you’ll save a ton of money!

    Get tuned again if you had that happen .because your car is different now with the heat range of plugs you have timing still left on the table because with the old plugs you probably got deteination it might be worth another 20 hp and 25 tq

    • @ZWHOA6Productions

      It's on my todo list. Spark plug heat ranges still kinda confuse me based on what guys use in their setups. For example, I saw a guy with a H/C/I/E package from Vengeance Racing (he posted an image of his recept) where his car made 575 RWHP but they used the TR55 plugs? I'm not sure why they didn't step up to the TR6. Anyway, definitely going to get it tuned again this year. Thanks!

    I had a 98 z28 m6 that I built myself with an MS4 with a 110 lsa and prc 227 Cali crank and rods 4.00 stroke to ~383 (3.903) first gen block sleeves. Etc. as long as the throttle was just cracked it was almost manageable but WOT at anything less than 4K rpm it would buck and cough and backfire. But once it got to 4K rpm you could be in 4rth on the freeway going triple digits and those 275’s couldn’t hold on. Getting on the freeway was quite comical. Moral of the story is once I had my C6Z it was ECS Novi1500 bound. It makes 530/500 without meth and I can leave it in 1st gear at a stop and drop the clutch and save it. 29mpg and bottom end for days. It ran 11.0 with what must have been 4 degrees of camber I’ve since took out (whole tire didn’t touch track). Only issue now is by 1/8th mile the IAT is climbing to 160F and the advance is dropping from 24 to 3 and the last half is a bust. That’s what meth is for though. Just have to replace the dive shaft coupling now😢. Ate a clutch and driver side half shaft and broke a water pump pully too. ~7psi stock everything but clutch and c5z halfshafts.

    I've got a 238/255 @ 115 cam in my '08Z and wish I had a slightly smaller cam. Parking lot manners are not awful, but not great either. 570whp on a mustang dyno (stock intake). Pulls like a freight train, sick lope, but sitting in traffic is the worst.
    Also, I don't have any drone from my corsa sports. Only noise I get it tire/road noise.

    HWHOA6 how much overlap does your cam have? And, if you have time, would you take a video of your car idling with the valves open and closed? I've had 3 vettes and now I'm getting the ich for a C6Z. My last one was a C5Z too. Great vid, thanks for posting.

    • @ZWHOA6Productions

      Sure, I'll work on a video of that. In all the videos I have that show the outside of the car running, the valves are open, fyi. Like this one (right at the end): ruclips.net/video/-sS-zAVVM48/видео.html
      As for overlap, my cam only has 6 degrees because I wanted good drivability. 230/246 with a 116 LSA.
      Cheers

    • @InigooMontoya
      @InigooMontoya 6 лет назад

      ZWHOA6, thanks! I'd love the power but I'm still concerned about the low speed mainly stop and go dd driving manners with this size cam. Do you think this cam would be good or even ok for a lot of stop and go traffic?

    • @ZWHOA6Productions
      @ZWHOA6Productions  6 лет назад

      InigooMontoya Depends. If you mean bumper to bumper traffic, then I might go with something more mild. If you just mean normal stop and go, my cam is actually very tame. It might take a tiny bit more throttle to drive it smoothly from a stop, but nothing crazy. There are many more mild cams and even more wild cams than mine out there. I’d talk to someone like Pat Guerra at Cam Motion so you can get a professional’s opinion.

  • @kevinbreese5739
    @kevinbreese5739 7 лет назад +2

    230/246 is not a baby cam. Few years back that would be considered a big cam and nowadays it's the range of a mid-sized cam, but definitely not a "baby cam." In my 08 Z06 I have a custom EPS cam that is 224/236 118+4 639/604...now THAT is a baby cam. Reason I went with it, is I deal with a LOT of stop and go traffic here on Long Island. Wanted TRUE stock-like drivability with a little bump in power.

    • @ZWHOA6Productions
      @ZWHOA6Productions  7 лет назад

      Kevin Breese Agree. It's definitely a subjective topic. If the tune is spot on, even a midrange cam can feel and drive like a baby cam. I like the one Pat spec'd for me. It's a Cam Motion with lobes that are easy on the valve train.

    • @kevinbreese5739
      @kevinbreese5739 7 лет назад +1

      I dealt with Geoff @ EPS..same thing, Cam Motion cam which I chose because as you said the lobes are supposed to be easy on the valve train. And yes, it's definitely subjective, but when you get in serious stop and go traffic for an hour, I'm talking on the Belt Parkway and Cross Bronx parkway, where people are so aggressive and leave no gap, trust me you still notice a difference, regardless of the tune. I had a medium sized cammed C5Z, and a pretty big cam (Black widow) in this C6Z before saying F this and going to the baby cam. In terms of true smooth drivability, drive something like a civic with a standard. The C6Z even with the stock cam is no where near that smooth. In SERIOUS traffic for a prolonged period of time you want it as smooth as possible. If I didn't have to deal with such traffic at certain times, I would go with a medium sized cam for sure, which in normal driving, like you are doing, with a good tune it's EZPZ

      jebcamaro Do you have exactly the same cam, air intake, ported heads, intake manifold and headers that I do? If not, how can you say my Corsas didn’t drone? All of these items affect the harmonics of an exhaust system. The drone with the Corsas was unbearable only between 1400 and 1600 RPM. Sure I could just drive in a lower gear but why make sacrifices? The stock system makes the same power, is lighter and does not drone when it’s closed. Cheers.
