“I’m not marrying the family” …. oh boy is he wrong! The reality is you marry the entire gene-pool …. Which often is a cesspool, so be smart and look at the family much more carefully.

Think I'm on little Joe's side here even though Ben was a good father & understanding most of the Time . Sometimes he was grumpy and he offten treated & talked to his adult sons like they were still little boys on several occasions especially Joe & even Hoss on several occasions. Ben was also a really supportive & caring father however now & then Ben seems to be a bit over protective of his sons & always needing to constantly know what they were doing & where they were at especially Little Joe and a lot of the time i think it was mostly just because Little Joe was his youngest son and always seemed to get in trouble, hurt , kidnapped or whatever more offten and joe was offten used as leverage or a bargaining ship by bad guys more offten then Adam & Hoss was to get what they wanted from Pa Ben . However overall I agree Ben was definitely one of the most heroic & best fathers in tv Just like Lucas McCain was off of another great show back in the day
The Riffleman. Thanks for sharing this clip with us all .

We need more fathers on television like Ben Cartwright. Except maybe for Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods, there is a lack of great TV fathers like there was back in the day. Ben Cartwright was a great TV father and some of us like me when I was growing up wishes that he were my father. Love me some Ben Cartwright. RIP to Lorne Greene and the cast of bonanza.

I loved the early seasons. I didn’t watch them at the time. I was a kid, had other things to do. And early bedtime when it was a new show kept me from seeing it.
Reruns were going strong in the early 70s, and that’s when I watched. Pernell Roberts was hot to me!
Once Adam left I lost interest in it.

If I told my parents what they "better "do, and in the same tone that Little Joe just did, I would have gotten "five across my lips". Never disrespect your parents no matter how old you get.

The thing that always strikes me about "Bonanza" is the house. Hand carved mahogany chests, silver bowls, fine china plate everywhere. The Ponderosa is 600,000 acres--937.5 square miles, almost 80% the size of Rhode Island--yet there's one house with a bunkhouse attached that couldn't hold more than 12 bunks; in the first episode, Ben said if they didn't come back from Virginia City by morning, 200 men would come sweeping down from the mountains. Well, where are they all? There are never more than a small handful of men anywhere. Every time there are at most the 4 Cartwrights and Hop-Sing or the 3 Cartwrights and Candy and often not even that, only 1 or 2 Cartwrights, the others are off on a cattle drive or in Carson City or San Francisco or somewhere else. Where do all the cattle and horses stay? On the range? There's no room in that barn for more than a half dozen horses. And in the first episode, Virginia City's portrayed as this sort of wicked, devil place that Cartwrights don't go into alone. Yet in many later episodes, Little Joe or Adam or Ben think nothing of riding in for a beer and a chat with Sheriff Coffee alone.

Little Joe is the LAST person to take offense at someone giving him a hard time. Why Hoss hasn't throttled him to death is the writer's blindness. Little Joe, though apparently loved by the ladies is a WEASEL of the highest order. Constantly getting in over his head because of his loud mouth and having his father or brothers bail him out. Repeatedly. A weasel. I intensely dislike that character. And yeah, I DO understand it's a part he plays.
