THE FEAR MERCHANTS: Bigotry against the Chinese is exploited by racist Virginia City mayoral candidate Andrew Fulmer and his band of thugs. A local woman is killed and the Cartwrights' friend, young Jimmy Chang, is falsely charged with the murder. Fulmer exploits the situation in his campaign of fear and intolerance. Adam pleads with the dead girl's family to come forward with the truth.
Every time trouble starts fast, and by the end of the show, it ends fast.

I watched Bonanza every Sunday night after Church with my Mom and Dad as a very young child. The best memories 💖

Wow, they sure turned Hop Sing into a caricature in the following seasons. His personality is totally different in this ep, a great deal more dignified.
@Paul Kryder Yep, I also remember him from his role in one of my favorite musicals "Flower Drum Song" and he was clearly American, spoke nothing like Hop Sing. Don't know why it would've been a big deal for the audiences to have simply accepted him throughout the series like he was in this ep. No wonder Pernell Roberts had a problem with the writing/depictions of people of color in this show (from what I've read).

It is very interesting how this episode mirrors current events. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I was just thinking that with this horrid anti-Asian climate now...bigotry against certain communities never seem to truly fade away, they just become somewhat dormant at certain points in time.
Sadly if it really mirrored current events, Fulmer would have been elected mayor a week later.

This episode is similiar to an episode of The Twilight Zone where town accusations were flying, i e. Lights going off and on, neighbor accusing neighbor of odd behavior and accusations against a "foreigner" that lived in the town--that, during the turn of events, was never really accepted as "one of them" because of latent prejudice. The martians only fed on their fears. The episode is called, "The monsters are due on Mulberry street."

i allways wondered why the cartrights never visit carson city ? it would have been easier to fill the plot holes whenever the sheriff of virginia city is central to the story.we know ray teal is the sheriff in nearly all the episodes but often like here we have a sheriff who is a complete stranger.surely in the absence of ray they might have set the episode in another town nearby? if only to prevent annoying posts like this.lol love the show.

True. Also, VC seems to change its character, sometimes portrayed as a cosy, quiet, well-established little town, other times as a sprawling, unsettled place, as in real life it was. It would have helped credibility to have some Bonanza episodes set in Carson City or Washoe City.
I suspect using VC so much was due to budget considerations. It would be cheaper to use the same lot as much as possible.

I feel like at the end the town's people, who were an inch close to a full war, pretty sporadically switched sides and took to the opposite side without even thinking twice. I wish the ending was more ambiguous as to whether or not the town would become more open-minded rather than such a rushed ending. Still love the episode though.

This was a very timely episode even through the lens of March 2020 with a President blaming a pandemic on the Chinese.

Why are Hoss's speech patterns so different than those of Ben, Adam, and Little Joe? Usually each member of a family has the same accent and uses the same general vernacular. When it comes to the Cartwrights, however, one of them talks like a southern hillbilly and the others all talk like west coast patricians. How strange. Does anyone have a logical explanation for this?

@Coyote de la Nube. Bonanza is entertaining but filled with crater-size potholes in script, plot and storyline development. David Dortort did a very poor job in maintaining quality. He admitted he bought scripts ad hoc from different writers. Hence the writing quality was a roller coaster. An example, in one episode a friend of the Cartwrights bragged that Adam designed and built the Ponderosa. I know he’s supposed to be smart but he must hv had to be a child genius to have done that. Pernell Roberts objected abt such poor scripts and plots and sought improvements. None was forthcoming and so he did not renew his contract, not even for all the millions he could make, and left. One director bemoaned that some scripts were so bad and banal that the job of the director was reduced to just ensuring the actors don’t bump into each other.

Addressed real issues of prejudice, but it’s painful watching such spineless characters. The show always depends on people babbling, not speaking coherently, clamming up when they should be talking, vacillating between two opinions. Makes me want to fast forward. Ridiculous inquiries. Shootouts. Then as typically happens, the guilty get brought to justice in the last two minutes. Everyone watches the slapstick justice unfold only, hanging on through the absurdities, just to see the last few moments. It’s a formula that worked even though preposterous generally in how it worked out.
