Old Fashioned Buttermilk Biscuits - The Hillbilly Kitchen

- When I was a little girl growing up in the north Georgia mountains, we all got up with the crowing of the rooster. For a long time we lived with my Granny and Paw because times were hard and jobs were scarce and on top of that, my daddy was spending his best working years recovering from a serious car wreck that almost left him crippled for the rest of his life.
I could hear the ritualistic clanking of pots and pans along with granny shuffling around the kitchen on her worn out linoleum floor while I laid in bed yawning and hoping she would change her mind about getting up so early and go back to bed.
The smell of smoke that soon filled my bedroom told me that Paw was throwing kindling in the pot bellied stove and that no one was going back to bed until nighttime rolled around again.
Granny was simultaneously building a fire in her kitchen wood stove and before too long, the rising heat from the two stoves would run me out of bed and send me flying downstairs towards cooler air.
The winter months brought snow by the foot instead of by the inch. Sometimes I dared to use Granny's spatula to scrape off some frost that had accumulated on the inside of the only window in the kitchen, so that I could peer out into the darkness, hoping to see a foot or more of freshly fallen snow that I could play in after breakfast.
Granny always made buttermilk biscuits for breakfast. Sometimes we didn't have bacon or sausage or even eggs to go with them, but buttermilk biscuits with Granny's real honey was enough of a treat by themselves.
I knew the biscuit making routine by heart and I could make her biscuits blindfolded because I helped her make them so many times.
First she mixed 2 cups of all purpose flour with 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt and she whisked them together.
Then she cut in 1/3 cup of her freshly churned butter.
She added 2 tablespoons of her fresh honey to 3/4 cup of her buttermilk. She gave it a little stir then poured it in the flour and butter mixture.
She threw a little flour down on her table so the dough didn't stick to the table and then she rolled out the dough and cut it into round biscuits about 1/2 inch high.
After sitting in the wood stove oven at 415 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, the biscuits had risen to a few inches high and they were golden brown.
Try my Granny's buttermilk biscuits. You'll want them every morning!

Came for the biscuits ,stayed for the Word! Well said sister!!
I would add that tithe actually means 1/10th or 10%
831 non believers gave this video a thumbs down! Too bad for them. I love my father in Heaven. I also love your cooking show. Keep up the great work. You are truly blessed.
I just found this channel today. I came for the biscuits, stayed for the praise of God. It is such a blessing to find God, country cooking, and biscuits. It is all in God's hands. 🙏

Probably not.
Good message on finances. When we realize that everything we have belongs to God, it changes everything.
I strongly believe that there are no such things as "coincidences". I really appreciate that God led me to your channel. I mean the biscuit recipe alone is great, but your discussion and testimony is the absolute ICING ON THE CAKE!!! I so appreciate you unapologetic stance and conviction as a child of God. Especially knowing what your previous background was to where you are now. I'm glad I found you my sister in Christ. You've got a new subscriber for that reason alone. God bless you and your family.
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your support and encouragement. Welcome to the Hillbilly Kitchen 😊 God Bless You!
@@TheHillbillyKitchen hello I am watching your videos on how to make crispy buttery biscuits and now I know how to make homemade crispy buttery biscuits and also I want to learn how to make bread from scratch can you show how to make bread on your next video please

I burst out laughing when you said "if you dont mind dying use margarine" you said it with a straight face, like no big deal... i love it.
Every one can't afford butter even though margarine is not the best for us but I am sure people use what they can afford thanks
@@penniecurrie2424 I grew up eating margarine but I made the switch years ago. The real question we should be asking ourselves is can we really afford to eat margarine? It’s not food. Ants won’t even touch it.

Meant BEST COOK EVER!!
I grew up in a house out in the middle of corn fields. It didn't have central air condition or heat. No water except for the outside well which we had to prime a hand pump to get the water into a bucket to carry into the house for drinking, bathing, and doing the dishes. Had a warm morning pot belly stove in the living room that Dad loaded up with coal and it glowed cherry red hot. That was our only heat. On the coldest days of winter you could see ice on the inside of our bedroom cinder block wall as well as on the single pane window. When the well ran dry in the summer we went to nearby natural springs or spring houses with cleaned out milk jugs until we had water again in the well. Life was good back then. No, it was great. What you describe when you were younger I can definitely relate to. Best years of our lives was spent living in that cinder block house on the hill. God bless all who read this and watch her post.
I’m a southern boy from central Mississippi, and I like to cook. I’m also a minister of the gospel, and I’m glad I found your channel. God bless and keep up the good work.
God has helped me by letting my Dr. Write a note to my apartment complex asking for a downstairs apartment for my health. We prayed & He has provided! God is so good!
Yes He is!!! Thank you for watching and sharing your blessing! 💕 God Bless You!
Had nearly same situation for my older Sister. My younger Sister & I Prayed, in Faith ,and found her a new, affordable place to live !
I came home sick from work today not knowing I was going to get a lesson from God...needed to here this.

It is so much fun loving the Lord and being thankful to Him for our food and good health and much more
OMG I just watched this video and I loved it I felt like she was talking to me.😊
I have been trying to get the hang of biscuits forever & these are the first ones that turned out perfect! Thank you from a southern girl that didn’t have a mama that taught me how to cook!

I just came here to watch a video on biscuits and left with a blessing. I've been thinking about why I'm struggling and never looked at it that way. I'm glad I watched your video. God Bless you and your family.
James Williams This is one of the greatest struggles of my life. For years when things got tight and I couldn't seem to make ends meet the first thing to go was God. Now the first always goes to God and the rest always seems to be there even when the total bills is more than the total dollars which is every week. I can't explain how but I know why. How ever impossible it seems God always takes care of it. God Bless You!

I made these today and they're fantastic. I used a bit more butter and made them maybe a little tall. LOL But, they were made for sausage gravy anyway and fluffy made both halves perfect for that. My 87 year old aunt said they were "fantastic." Her approval is impressive. Thank you for sharing your recipes and your faith. You are obviously very blessed!
Thank you for the recipe and the reminder about our relationship with the Lord! Bless you!
I came across this biscuit video on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter, Jesus’ blessed resurrection.... I came to the part where there was a note to “skip forward past the dialog about God”. We are in the middle of a pandemic of Covid-19 virus and I can think of nothing better than to listen to her share her truth..... May our Father bless you for making this sooooo much more than a cooking video....😉💖✝️

Cut the biscuits thicker -3/4" - you don't need a rolling pin. Pat them out. Put them closer and they will support each other when they rise. Don't be afraid to add a bit more baking powder.

Thank you sharing this, watching this triggered some wonderful memories of my mama in the kitchen making her southern style biscuits! My mother mixed her biscuit dough by using her hand to mix ingredients, it was awesome to watch her, she used crisco lard an buttermilk, she'd make a flour well, then put her lard inside the flour well, then buttermilk, she mixed the lard an buttermilk by squeezing it thru her fingers , then she would go around the flour well edge and with her fingers very lightly whisp the flour from the sides of flour well and incorporate it in with the liquid, there was a art /skill to it, she had small hands, an how she did this was so unique to watch! As she would go around the flour well an pulling flour from the sides then gentle squeeze it into the ball then lightly lift as she moved her fingers around the ball of of dough, till it was to her satisfaction then she would pinch an certain amount of dough of equal size and roll it gently in her palm an then place each one into her iron skillet, lightly flatten the tops of them down so all the sides touched each other,, then she would take a small amount of melted crisco an pat it on the tops of each one , they came a light golden brown an were light & fluffy an moist! They would melt in your mouth! she said started making biscuits when she was a young girl, she had 6 younger brothers an would help her mom out an learnt to cook at early age. When she I ask her how she did it without making any mess a tall, She said..I had plenty of practice over the years! I miss her very much and her biscuits as well.

Oh my goodness. Watching this 3 years later and 4 months ago I felt strongly compelled to read through from Genesis to Revelation. Four months later I’m already in Jeremiah. I truly feel that God , through the power of the Holy Spirit, has gifted me with a deep desire to see the whole picture, not just a few verses that I may interpret wrongly because I don’t understand who God is.
These are wise words you are giving regarding the purpose of the offerings. Also, part of the food tithe was to be brought into storehouse for the widows, orphans and sojourners.
In fact God accused the Israelites of robbing HIM when they had neglected this one tithe. Knowing this, helps us to know that this is something that God still requires of His children because God cares for these vulnerable groups.
I'm 74 , I''ve been try ing to make good bisuits for years . This is the third time I've made them. They were perfect each time. THANK YOU!!!!!

Sandy Erby I cant understand your comment. Can you rewrite in another comment?
I wish it was true, but it isn't. Southerners can be some of the most antichrist people there are. On top of that, they are so humiliated by the perception that they might be Christian, that they mock Jesus worse than people from almost anywhere else. They are blind; they mock what, and Whom, they do not know. They don't know the difference between Jesus Christ and country lifestyle & music, etc, and especially right wing politics. That's antichrist all by itself: He is God; we are not. It is tragic to see what is happening.
@P_SON I know the Lord Jesus; all you boasted of is flesh.
