There is no strain in RiK Emmet’s face at all, no missed notes, it’s pure. And that band is tight. Those are what you call professional Musicians. Saw them in 1986 and they blew the roof off….. Thanks for video!
Triumph is/was hugely popular in the state of Texas. Many die-hard fans there still today. Great recent documentary on Triumph where fans came from all over to surprise the band at their studio in Mississauga Ontario called Metal Works. Many travelled from Texas and they expressed their love for the band. Many of their songs helped people through tough periods in their life so we heard.
You just nailed it, my friend. Just because Triumph didn't drink or used drugs, they were not the favorites. Too bad. My opinion: best well-educated guitar! player Compare them with any US Festival performance. Triumph Love Youuuuu. 😅
Watch them live back in 1983 at the US Festival in San Bernardino California. They played the same day as Motley Crue, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen. This 3 piece Canadian band dominated the other bands. What a night of music. They also have this song live from the US Festival
My girlfriend at the time surprised me with Triumph concert tickets in 1982 at the Lakeland Civic Center in FL, touring the Blinding Light Show.. so just one year before this.. What an amazing Live show they put on.. We had great seats, and on top of the music being outstanding, their Light show was also incredible!.
We used to see these guys play the bars around Toronto, then saw them at Massy Hall which I think had seating back then for about 3,500. Then saw them back up bands in Maple Leaf Gardens before headlining themselves. The 70s and 80s was an incredible time for music.
That wasn't Triumph at Massy Hall. The fire Marshall wouldn't let them use their pyro there, so they decided to play Maple Leaf Gardens instead. It's in the documentary.
Their whole US Festival set was incredible. Their global coming out party and they killed. The drummer Gil Moore has terrific vocals to. More blues style . "When the lights go down" from this show is great and he's the lead on it.
Triumph kills it live, no question. Rik Emmett is as talented a vocalist and guitarist as anyone, he can pretty much play any style you like. I personally love this song, the message is right on point and the musical ability is second to none, winner song for me.
I love it too. His voice does make it roar, and roar it does. I get the bass criticism but the driving tempo of the song is heart pumping anyway, and the lyrics make it soar. s-Tier for me.
Best performance at US Festival 83. The base player just do great with Rik. A simple great trio without any super guitar pedals/effects, rocking from beginning through the end. Please compare this performance with anybody in that concert, including Van Halen.
Framus Ackermann AK74. A classic guitar played by rock musics most underrated virtuoso. Long live Triumph. The helped me navigate trhe early 70's and early 80's and I came out, unscathed, on the other side.
This song hit me deep during an impressionable part of my teen years. The lyrics and messaging cannot be beat in my eyes. I still strive to live to this credo 40 yeas on
Saw them live several times from '78 to mid 80's...killer live band..Rik Emmett is virtuoso guitar and voice. Great stage show too, on their own tours!
I was there. Awesome performance by Triumph. That day was epic. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, and Van Halen at this venue. All of them, except VH, gave a stunning performance.
Hey J., I was there....and this was one of the most memorable concerts I have attended. It was blazing hot during the day but It had started to cool down when Triumph started playing (the promoters, incl. Steve Wosniak, thought enough to have water cannons to help cool the 300K plus crowd at Glen Helen Park in San Bernardino, CA. What a line up. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Triumph, Scorpions and Van Halen. I think many have been asserting Rik's talents....I saw Triumph a few times and never saw a bad show.
This band is filthy! Tight and clean. Rik is the greatest lead guitarist, phenomenal voice. Mike Levene is a wonderful bassist. Love his constant smile! And Gil Moore is an awesome drummer. And he sings well too. Amazing band
I saw them in a 1500 seat auditorium about 2 yrs before the US festival. I was in the center 4th row. They are so good live. No sound problem that night. They dismantled the Mcfarlin auditorium on the SMU campus in Dallas. I've seen almost all the big bands 70s 80s. No one has ever done it better. They didn't do shit just played & sang no light show nothing. I enjoy watching RUclips, but it doesn't compare to being in the right place at the right time! Sorry I wrote so much.
They didn't need as many overdubs while recording as one would think. All three of them are just that good... rock gods. I would be hard pressed to to think of a more impressive trio...
I loved them so much in the 1980s (and still do)! Totally underrated band. Canada produced 2 of the best high rock voices in Geddy Lee and Rik Emmett!! ...and Rik Emmett can shred that guitar as well.
Howard Stern on drums …I guess before the radio thing….. i jest …Gil Moore at times looks just like him…I saw them in 85 Thunder seven tour 2nd row ….still one of the best shows ever
I hardly ever use the bridge pick-up on a JazzBass myself, as I just don't like that sound 😅 But due to their offset shape and the neck usually being slimmer around the lower frets, I find JazzBasses more comfortable to play than P-basses. But I did like the bridge pick-up by itself on a '79 Ibanez 'Musician' bass I'd once owned for a decade or so, also because I was able to add plenty of low frequencies thanks to its 3-band EQ. Sting had played the same bass with The Police for a while, just the fretless version 🙂
I was there too Triump and Scorpions blew Van Halen off the stage! We left after the 3rd Son from Van Halen. David Lee Roth was so Drunk he kept forgetting the lyrics
Saw an interview with Rik where he talked about opening for Journey at the Rose Bowl, and he and Steve Perry were talking and he asked Rik how he hit those high notes so effortlessly! Rik said, I aked the same of him! Two of the best voices in rock! Dio is up there too...different styles. Robin Zander was good too. In the same interview, Rik said that Tommy Shaw another guitar/voice combo that he respected much.
Triumph light show was so amazing back in the day that Michael Jackson leased their entire rig for the Jackson 5 tour ! You know your doing it right if MJ seeks you out !! Emmett just amazing all around !! Try Hold on Live from Stages album. Great guitar /vocal all alone on stage no band just Emmett !!!
In my opinion Gil Moore sang the standard rocker/party songs while Rick sang the progressive/emotional songs. “Tear the roof off” had both but that happened once in a while. 😂
You Rush geeks are all alike...no wonder no women ever went to Rush shows. They are totally different bands. If you want a drum solo, posing as a song, and subdued guitar playing, then Rush is your band. And a guy screeching in his top register...again..Rush is your band...emperor's clothes for geeks. Lee's vocal suck compared to Ruk's, especially LIVE..same with Lifeson's guitar.
Allied Forces to me was the last time Triumph rocked after 1982 the Never Surrender album they fell into the mainstream media with MTV and went to poppy.
Same here..he is a dick..I would like to hear what he likes...a Rush geek maybe..he looks like a Rush putz. No wonder Rush concerts were all geek guys.
There is no strain in RiK Emmet’s face at all, no missed notes, it’s pure. And that band is tight. Those are what you call professional Musicians. Saw them in 1986 and they blew the roof off….. Thanks for video!
the ending is just how you end a rock show....the crowd was going crazy....good luck to whomever had to follow that onstage....
Triumph is/was hugely popular in the state of Texas. Many die-hard fans there still today. Great recent documentary on Triumph where fans came from all over to surprise the band at their studio in Mississauga Ontario called Metal Works. Yea Triumph had so many uplifting and positive songs and I guess that’s why the name Triumph fits so well.
It must be true, I saw them live four times in Texas!
You just nailed it, my friend. Just because Triumph didn't drink or used drugs, they were not the favorites. Too bad. My opinion: best well-educated guitar! player Compare them with any US Festival performance. Triumph Love Youuuuu. 😅

I was in that crowd US fest 83 2nd day Heavy Metal day! Triumph was phenomenal..
The Blinding light show was a song from their debut album in 1976
The night Triumph blew away all comers, and became big in the US at the US.
He was put on this earth to play guitar and sing. What a gift.
Their whole US Festival set was incredible. Their global coming out party and they killed. The drummer Gil Moore has terrific vocals to. More blues style . "When the lights go down" from this show is great and he's the lead on it.

Rik Emmett amazing singer, guitar player is also a professor at The Humber College of music in Toronto.
I was there in 83. San Bernardino, ca. Their show was EPIC!!!
This song hit me deep during an impressionable part of my teen years. The lyrics and messaging cannot be beat in my eyes. I still strive to live to this credo 40 yeas on
Story behind this song is inspirational…And the drummer can sing like hell, too.Sort of like Grand Funk.
Such an amazing cut , had awesome concerts!!
Cheers
I don’t know how I didn’t know how great they are live 🤯🔥
They was killer live. Good musicans and great singers(Rik and Gil)..
Saw them live several times from '78 to mid 80's...killer live band..Rik Emmett is virtuoso guitar and voice. Great stage show too, on their own tours!
Rik really can sing!
He made some great albums after left Triumph
Triumph were total badasses. Criminally underrated.
I saw them on this tour it was awesome
I was there. Awesome performance by Triumph. That day was epic. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, and Van Halen at this venue. All of them, except VH, gave a stunning performance.
No over dubs. No auto tune. No backing tracks… three dudes on borrowed gear CRSHING😂
Hey J., I was there....and this was one of the most memorable concerts I have attended. I was there too!
Triump.was awesome!
So were the Scorpions who followed Triumph into the evening.
The Headliners Van Halen SUCKED!
I was near the front of the stage on Rik's side.... US festival rocked!
I got to see Triumph live back in the day. They always put on a good show.
I was there at that concert. The crowd was immense and the music was intense with so many great rock groups. Too many to name at this point
My favorite Triumph tune. Had a chance to see them during their 1986 "Sport Of Kings" tour. One of the best concerts I've ever seen...
Never Surrender from this concert is excellent.
This band is filthy! Tight and clean. Rik is the greatest lead guitarist, phenomenal voice. Mike Levene is a wonderful bassist. Love his constant smile! And Gil Moore is an awesome drummer. And he sings well too. Amazing band
Ricks a singing machine and a dam good guitarist
I was there all three days, it was one month before I got out of the Marine Corps, it was a great concert !
I seen them live. I seen Queen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Wilcox. Sorry you missed it.
You seem like you're forced to do Triumph and it's painful for you,lol...I always loved and respected these guys!
Rik Emmett is one of the nicest guys ever, and underrated guitarist and singer!! Rik Emmett and the guys are proud Canadians too!!! ❤😊🤘
I saw them in a 1500 seat auditorium about 2 yrs before the US festival. I was in the center 4th row. They are so good live. No sound problem that night. Not sure how I missed this reaction. Great song and great band. I was only ever a casual Triumph fan, but really enjoy the stuff from them I know.
Live Triumph is awesome 👌because they sound better than the studio stuff. Great reaction.
They didn't need as many overdubs while recording as one would think. All three of them are just that good... rock gods. I would be hard pressed to to think of a more impressive trio...
Great live version !
Legendary.........period.
Like your subdued reaction. And just commenting without stopping the song. Good job. This live performance is incredible.
I loved them so much in the 1980s (and still do)! Totally underrated band. Canada produced 2 of the best high rock voices in Geddy Lee and Rik Emmett!! ...and Rik Emmett can shred that guitar as well.
Awesome live performance. Three power players.
The drummer is so smooth!
Triumph was the little engine that could.
And they did.
Gil (the drummer) has a killer voice as well. Check out Follow Your Heart! It's honestly one of my favourites!!
Howard Stern on drums …I guess before the radio thing….. i jest …Gil Moore at times looks just like him…I saw them in 85 Thunder seven tour 2nd row ….still one of the best shows ever

I was there, and it was flipping hot close to 115° found a good spot as quiet riot was on stage. Van halen was bad, David lee was drunker then S**T
I was there too Triump and Scorpions blew Van Halen off the stage! We left after the 3rd Son from Van Halen. David Lee Roth was so Drunk he kept forgetting the lyrics
But your the master of your own destiny. So give and take the best that you can.
Rik is the man !!! Check out his solo on rock ‘n’ roll machine from the same concert !!!!
I was there. I was 17.
Hopefully Mike has requested Never Surrender from this show.
Rick had an epic high voice
I was there n Triumph was tight as hell!!! Scorpions killed it too!!!!
Dude this song is WAY far better than 'just alright'...listen to the album version!
Rik Emmett is a musical instrument..
Gr8 voice, gr8 guitar work, what else is there
Fucking great.
If John Petrucci & Steve Perry could somehow have a child it would be Rik Emmett! Thanks so much for playing this
Saw an interview with Rik where he talked about opening for Journey at the Rose Bowl, and he and Steve Perry were talking and he asked Rik how he hit those high notes so effortlessly! Rik said, I aked the same of him! Two of the best voices in rock! Dio is up there too...different styles. Robin Zander was good too. Lots of peeps say they stole the show
They did....
In my opinion Gil Moore sang the standard rocker/party songs while Rick sang the progressive/emotional songs. “Tear the roof off” had both but that happened once in a while. 😂
Do you think they started as a Rush tribute band ? I wonder. :P
Nope..started about the same time..Lifeson is not as good as Rik, and Lee is not as good of a vocalist either.
Agreed on the bass tone, would make a much bigger sound.
One Richard Gordon Emmett is the best lead man EVER!
Longest song ending in history.
hes talented he sings and plays lead too not easy to do
The bass player was probably using a rented backline and didn't have much control over his sound. Rik Emmett has said his backline was rented.
Yep..they played in Florida the night before, and had to fly over night to get there. Much of the equipment was not theirs, including Gil's drum kit.
Triumphs only problem was, and now Rush
You Rush geeks are all alike...no wonder no women ever went to Rush shows. They are totally different bands. If you want a drum solo, posing as a song, and subdued guitar playing, then Rush is your band. And a guy screeching in his top register...again..Rush is your band...emperor's clothes for geeks. Lee's vocal suck compared to Ruk's, especially LIVE..same with Lifeson's guitar.
The guitar is so thick because it is hollow.
Allied Forces to me was the last time Triumph rocked after 1982 the Never Surrender album they fell into the mainstream media with MTV and went to poppy.
I personally think you’re a dick, but I respect your professional opinion…thank you for the raw reactions, we need more of that!
Thx!
thanks??!!
Same here..he is a dick..I would like to hear what he likes...a Rush geek maybe..he looks like a Rush putz. No wonder Rush concerts were all geek guys.
Ed Sheran…lol
The US Festival…
Brought to you by Apple.
They lost a lot of money
Putting on this show…
So your gonna nid pick,100k plus whatcha got
The performance is stealing the compositions thunder
Rik Emmett was inspired by his aunt, who was dying of cancer. Such a beautiful and inspiring song!! ❤🤘
