Cranes in the sky…. I took it As an industrial crane not a bird. I listened to this song faithfully after my mom passed. I took it as trying to escape depression and grief. I tried all of those things she named. 8 years later I still cry when I hear it.
actually, in all these songs solange is not exactly talking about a man or relationships, i mean of course u can interpret them like that but you’ll be missing the richness and realness of it all. This album is very political and all about black pride and black reassurance, and it is hold in high regard by their community especially If you look back at the context of the time it was released . •"Rise" is a calm reaffirmation of one's own abilities no matter where one ends up, this reconfirmation of our own individuality is necessary in a political atmosphere like the one we still live in today. • in “Weary” Solange is talking about how she's tired of the concept of people as higher beings, and that "a king is only a man / With flesh and bones, he bleeds just like you do". The concept of a hierarchy, social or otherwise, disinterests her and instead she looks for herself for inspiration. • “Cranes in the Sky” (my personal album fav) we see Solange describing distracting herself from the world, expanding upon the prior two tracks' attempts to disregard the ills of the world, only this time in a more self-destructive manner instead of a self-serving manner. Describing how she'll distract herself on material thing. She later on states that all of these distractions "only made me sadder". •On “Mad” Solange discusses conversations she's had with people where they try to cast off the blame of racism into "blaming" and "complaining", and that she "always got to be so mad". This, in turn, drains Solange of all of her energy, and describes how she's not allowed to be mad even when the oppressors are. • “Don’t Touch My Hair” is about objectification as well as asking white people to not touch her hair - a form of racial microagression that a lot of black women experience - as well as outlining the pain and history behind their hair. • "F.U.B.U." Is relying on one's own community when the outside world is unfairly labeling them. At the end, this album holds soo much of meaning all displayed with beautiful vocals and just great production. Solange brings a lot of artfulness to the R&B sphere. Her music videos in particular have been very influential. U can see her influence all over the place these days. Especially with the earthy/neutral tones you may see in videos, and also use of interpretive dance. Def check out her visuals sometime!
So dope to see you reacting to this album! My cousin, Troy, is good friends with Solange. They write together often (check out Kelly's album "Simply Deep"). Troy along with Mr. Saadiq worked together on this project for a solid year prior to the release date. Solange originally recorded hundreds of tracks (musical concepts) for this album. Troy said it took them forever to sort, pick, and merge them into actual songs that made sense... An entire year! He said they had a lot of fun putting it together, not thinking it would win them a Grammy 🏆
D’angelo voodoo next ! Given how much ur liking these type of albums d’angelo is going to give u eargasms. He birthed a whole sub genre by himself called neo-soul. One which solange is clearly influenced by.

Mad is about the right to be mad being black, touch my hair isn’t really talking a guy, but America not respecting black women, and where do we go from here and crane in the skies is talking about gentrification. This album is a masterpiece. Watching her live is an amazing experience.
I always took the meaning behind cranes in the sky as dealing with depression, grief, or any other type of mental anguish. But I think you’re spot on about where do we go from here.
One reason why I love watching people react to music is that it always adds something to my understanding of the album or track in question. Cranes In The Sky has been a favorite of mine for years but since English is only my second language I didn't know that the word "crane" can refer to a type of bird, I only knew it as the machine used to lift and move heavy objects. It adds a lot to the song when you consider the double meaning.

This album is in constant rotation in my playlist. Solange has been dropping great music since the Late 2000s ( I Decided, has a 60s groove) , T.O.N.Y. is perfection. Solange took her time producing this project. She has heard an unfinished sample Raphael had worked on that caught her ear and Asked him to please allow her to use it . The en result was Cranes In The Sky (which refers more to the construction cranes) she was in Miami and looking around she saw all this construction and loss of Nature (hence, I don't wanna see those Metal clouds) The man on most of the Interludes is, Master P. Lastly For Us By Us , is a double play on words because it's what the 90s urban Clothing label FUBU , stood for. So Enthusiast to see new people discover Solange and her amazing Talent. She won a Grammy for this album. Her follow up Album, When I Get Home , is 🎉🎉🤯💜. She even did a full length video that runs the entire length of the album.
my favourite solange album! a very good one, without a doubt. i'm sure you've heard about it already, but as a drummer, you'll surely love madvillainy by madvillain (MF DOOM + Madlib). A masterpierce of abstract hiphop, a cornerstone of hiphop altogether, sometimes hard to get into because of it's unconventionality, but marvellous and super dense. it is a 46min album so it's not long, but more than a couple of great songs put together, it's tought and better listened to as a whole, so some songs are skits, interludes, or just a lot more valuable with context. not a storytelling masterpiece like GKMC, but the wordplay, vocabullary and instrumentation is exceptional and you can really tell DOOM is overflowing with ideas, hence its #2 placement in the top hip hop albums on RYM. have a nice week!
Madvillainy is absolutely on my radar! I did get a little glimpse into MF DOOM in Demon Days by Gorillaz. Curious if Madvillainy is the best first album from MF DOOM to start out with.
@@lusciousluie i find MM FOOD quite a lot easier to get into, it’s still amazing, but a level below Madvillainy, probably bc of the downgrade in production and a heavier presence of skits
@@lusciousluie you should have no big issues with madvillainy! i don’t mean “dense”as TPAB’s dense, just lirically dense because of the bars and the vocabulary, the meaning is also there kinda but nothing compared to tpab
