- The Protective Breathing Equipment (PBE), offered by Essex Industries, Inc. in St. Louis, MO, supplies oxygen to crewmembers through the use of compressed aviator grade oxygen. The PBE dons in only 15 seconds, with a unique design that eliminates the need for an oral/nasal mask. The amber-tinted hood provides 270° of visibility and the elastic neck seal requires no adjustment. The PBE provides 15 minutes of oxygen and one size fits most adults. This lightweight device takes very little stowage space and is currently used by 90% of the Commercial Airline Industry in the United States. The PBE holds FAA TSO-C116, TSO-C99 approvals as well as CAA, EASA, CAAC and ANAC approvals.

Smoke HOOD (PBE) --> whole HEAD --> little chemical generator --> Continuous flow
Smoke MASK --> whole FACE --> oxygen regulator (depends on the selector position)
To clarify for the Essex PBE (Smoke Hood), we use compressed aviator grade oxygen / C02 scrubbers and not a chemical generator on our units.

270° Celsius or Fahrenheit?
270º for viewing angle visibility. The PBE has a thermal resistance of Radiant Heat - 1.0 BTU/SQ. FT. for up to 60 seconds, Dripping Thermoplastic to 390°F, and Transient Flame of 1800°F for 5 seconds.
