SOME tournaments don’t want to give the best spots for cameras because they want to add more sponsored seats or VIP sections. Months of planning goes into this and production team does send their recommendations but sometimes it takes actions like these for tournament to actually take our concerns seriously. At the challenger level, we built up freestanding LED boards for scoring. They were in the far corners but at the same level as the bleachers. A terrible doubles team decided to use space that wasn’t even for play. One of the players went wide on a ball that was already out, hit our boards at full speed and knocked them over. It snap a board and it took us 10 minutes to lift them back up. They asked us to move it back and we did, next day they asked us to move it forward to original position. NO ONE ELSE hit the boards or complained about the boards. We even had them in same position this year with 0 incident. Some players are just children.
The grand prize he tennissed for, was paid by televising the tournament. If he doesn’t like the cameras being there, he can go back to amateur club tennis.

I work in tennis broadcasts, mostly challenger level. This problem should’ve been addressed to tournament director before the tournament began. And it’s likely the camera crew already did. At these venues, we don’t have any say in camera placement outside of our recommendations. It’s actually a huge deal to organize as the best positions sometimes go to sponsors instead of media so we end up in weird spots. Players / Umpire / Tournament Supervisor bringing up these concerns to Tournament Director actually holds more weight than the crew (very annoying we get thrown under the bus a lot). So what sucks is player is through a tantrum and takes it out on the people who have the least ability to accommodate. That’s why he’s in the wrong. He should’ve brought it up with supervisor and game should’ve paused until issue is resolved. Sometimes it can’t be resolved THAT instance. For these cameras, it take about 30 minutes or more to setup and balance. Cabling could also delay this. SMPTE Fiber is very heavy thick, and it may not be the only cable to camera. Poor sportsmanship, poor planning by tournament.

I suppose not before the tournament, but organizers have time to fix it, but they just denied. I can imagine that about 20 tickets would allow to create a niche for 2 cameras (or if it is the only camera from 1 side, idk, then only 10 tickets accordingly).

And tournament director (organizers) is only person that can make that call (although tournament supervisor has the ability not have play on court if they see an issue). There’s no camera platform in bleachers. Bleachers are like stairs, you can’t just put a camera like that without a flat area. Moving that camera before the game would’ve taken more time and delayed play. ( Ima give an opinion that a little inside baseball. I could be entirely wrong but… I think Mendvedev did this on purpose. I’ve seen multiple times where players would fixate on a problem and they’ll MAKE it a problem during play. Sometimes because they’re losing, sometimes just because. He definitely was losing that point.
IMO he deliberately barged into the camera after that move because he saw an opportunity if he'd been complaining prior to the game, it's not like that camera op snuck into position between points. I'm sure we'll see that box lens on ES newsletter shortly ;)

As an Australian, I am used to the hawkeye cameras, all attached to the roof and well away from the courts, so I have to admit that it is odd to see something like that right there at the back of the court.

So what sucks is player is through a tantrum and takes it out on the people who have the least ability to accommodate. That’s why he’s in the wrong. He should’ve brought it up with supervisor and game should’ve paused until issue is resolved. Sometimes it can’t be resolved THAT instance. For these cameras, it take about 30 minutes or more to setup and balance. Cabling could also delay this. SMPTE Fiber is very heavy thick, and it may not be the only cable to camera.

I suppose not before the tournament, but organizers have time to fix it, but they just denied. I can imagine that about 20 tickets would allow to create a niche for 2 cameras (or if it is the only camera from 1 side, idk, then only 10 tickets accordingly).

And tournament director (organizers) is only person that can make that call (although tournament supervisor has the ability not have play on court if they see an issue).
There’s no camera platform in bleachers. Bleachers are like stairs, you can’t just put a camera like that without a flat area. Moving that camera before the game would’ve taken more time and delayed play. (
Ima give an opinion that a little inside baseball. I could be entirely wrong but… I think Mendvedev did this on purpose. I’ve seen multiple times where players would fixate on a problem and they’ll MAKE it a problem during play. Sometimes because they’re losing, sometimes just because. He definitely was losing that point.
IMO he deliberately barged into the camera after that move because he saw an opportunity if he'd been complaining prior to the game, it's not like that camera op snuck into position between points. I'm sure we'll see that box lens on ES newsletter shortly ;)

You can be empathetic to how he feels frustration about cameramen being inside the court. But he already probably damaged that expensive camera. Kicking it after the cameraman fixed it was just too petty and childish. The cameraman is only there because of the organizers. He's just doing his job as well. As an Australian, I am used to the hawkeye cameras, all attached to the roof and well away from the courts, so I have to admit that it is odd to see something like that right there at the back of the court.
