    I like how you think about bird health and safety as well as cool designs. I wish more inexperienced bird box posters would watch your techniques of building safe boxes. Too many well-intentioned wood workers don't include access doors, ventilation, drainage, predator blocks and continue to add the unnecessary perch. Keep it up.

    And yes, I was very careful not to get any chemicals or contamination in it.

    I make temporary bird houses out of a small card board box. I leave one end open & I put a paper bag, the opened end toward the bird hole opening so that the closed end of the paper bag faces the opening & seals it shut. At the end of the year all I have to do is take the paper bag out & I discard it & put a new paper bag inside. The outside cardboard box stays good. Once, the cardboard box becomes old, then I just replace it. You can do this with a steadier wood box or bird house. Just make sure you use clean paper bags & the closed end acts as the back seal.

  • @le4470
    @le4470 4 года назад

    I have changed my strategy & now I am going to only use temporary small card board boxes & burn them or discard them after the birds have flown away & then put up another one after that. I don't want to breath in the dust from the debris inside the box. It can pose to be unhealthy as you don't know if the birds inside are carrying a disease. Besides I get free small card board boxes at the grocery store for free. This is just my strategy & my opinion.

    • @Backyardprojectguy
      @Backyardprojectguy  4 года назад

      I like that..What a great Idea!!..I would like to see how you do some of your boxes..Do you put a roof on to keep them dry??

    • @le4470
      @le4470 4 года назад

      I keep them flat roof ( ha ha ). You can paint the top with non-toxic water based paint, put a piece of wood on top or just put a brown paper bag over the box for extra protection. I usually make one over the winter so it's ready to replace immediately after they're gone. The birds seem to love them. They're not picky home owners.

    It's mid Feb in northern VA. How do I know when to do this? My first two blue bird houses were empty but the third one has had blue birds perching on top last couple of times I went out. How do I know if nesting material is amess or a nest being built in progress? I dont want to undermine their work. I just put up these bird houses in Nov a few months ago.

    Blue Bird ......I'm wonder if I did the right thing by cleaning out my BLUE BIRD house. When I cleaned out the totally pine needle built nest, it was very neat, clean and looked like it was ready to be used again. This is October 4th and my wife just noticed that the pair of blue birds just came back today, inspecting their bird house, like they did this past spring. Did I do the right thing by cleaning out the blue bird, bird house.?

    • @Backyardprojectguy
      @Backyardprojectguy  3 года назад

      I don't believe you did bad thing...I doubt the pair would have any young at this time of the year..They may use the house as a resting place for a week or two , until they keep their migration going..

    • @Backyardprojectguy

      Does not have to be..They will rebuild the nest each brood. If the Bird Box gets to filled..yes you should clean it out..I have taken the old nest and put them in the Garden below. I have seen other birds grab the material for their new nest..

    • @Backyardprojectguy
      @Backyardprojectguy  5 лет назад

      Most likely you will know from all the activity..But if not the the only sure way is to physical check it..Open it up..Some times Male Birds will start to build several nest. When a female comes along, she gets to pick which nest they will use. leaving one half build or unfinish, or never used....hope this helps

    Have to disagree for several reasons. One, have birds living in them 365. Two, there are thousands of holes and small spaces that birds nest in for decades without a cleaning. Three using the same nesting material is still a contamination so why spin wheels.

    Aren't we coming at this from a human aspect?? The woods/forest/trees are full of bugs etc and I really don't think the birds are bothered by it at all. They're just filthy dirty bugs to us humans. I have had my bluebirds return every single year for 19 years the same box that I have never cleaned out in that time. Just saying, but I did come here as it did get me thinking. But as I say, 19 years - no problems - nice healthy birds. I wouldn't suggest a human go live in it :-)

    • @Backyardprojectguy
      @Backyardprojectguy  5 лет назад

      Yes I do agree with you...I have a couple birdhouse that I can not clean out..They where made without clean up in mind..and YES my birds come back year after year..I have seem them build new nest on top of the old ones...and Ive seem the clean out the old nest and build new one..So yes you are correct..Its a Human thing
