I think I would just fill the tub with the mixture and dunk the whole house in it and then brush it clean. Dunk afterwards in a clean tub of water. Then give a robust spray down. Let dry.
I always attach to a tree and never had a problem. They don’t like swinging bird houses in the trees as I’ve tried that. Also I would just dunk the birdhouse in a tub and rinse well.
My opinion; birds like a house on a pole better than one hanging from a branch. After all, nature does not provide any swinging bird houses!!!!! Nice clean out job, however!

Birds do not notice the difference. Birds build nets on limbs that move about with the wind.
I found birds are messy that's why I starting charging a security deposit.
