Sounded like it dropped some valves which caused piston damage, this was the most common catastrophic failure I used to see on these old cummins motors usually due to over-revving on a downgrade they can't handle anything over 3,000 or the valves float. When the valves start floating and they hit the pistons and it knocks the keepers out...game over.

When I was in my early years in the auto industry, about 17 years ago, I had the pleasure of working on a 1997 F350 7.3L turbodiesel. On that day I had my first lesson in diesel mechanics as well as safety. The engine was a no start issue. My coworker turned the key, I proceeded to spray ether into the airbox. We were totally unaware of what we were doing (both of us inexperienced with diesel). The top of that motor blew up sending me to the floor and shrapnel all over the shop. I am fairly certain that's where my lack of hearing and fear of diesels came from. Haha. It's a memory I will never forget.

I've some very strong 855 big cam engines. Had a boss who liked building them extra loose. Thing would smoke out a 10 acre field every morning of winter but after coming to temp the only smoke you'd see was fuel. No problems breaking the speed limits of VA highways with 83,000 lbs.

Well that was a special type of fun that my wife would never get... I was a student in the Diesel program at Santa Rosa Jr College and my instructor gave me the thumbs up on fabricating a heat exchanger using the waste heat off the exhaust stack. The purpose of the heat exchanger was to thin up the viscosity of used veggie oil and let the Cat motor suck it back up as fuel. We had attached a water brake to measure horse power difference between veggie oil vs real diesel. Anyways half way into the semester some of the piston had enough of this BS and went on strike. They melted and exploded like a volcano. No one got hurt but it was truly amazing when the exhaust started pouring orange sparks all over the shop floor.

Also where are all the haters? I'd figure there world be a lot more since I'd say the 855s are more legendary engines than the 8v71s.
By this time with the 8v71 destruction video, there were 2000 angry commenters and 60% more dislikes than likers. Funny how that all works.

Love to see you try and blow up an IVECO engine. We have one in a FIAT loader and the damn thing doesn't stop. Weve ran it out of oil till it wouldn't turn over added oil and it fired right up. We had it sitting for five years till the vines took it over and I told a buddy of mine it would fire right up on the shitty diesel still in it. That it did but it took off wfo because the pedal was rusted to the floor.. great videos. Love to see you kill one of the IVECO 's

Conversely those that think its wasteful or stupid are OBVIOULSLY More intelligent as they see the potential of NOTHING and Making something out of it..
