Sounded like it dropped some valves which caused piston damage, this was the most common catastrophic failure I used to see on these old cummins motors usually due to over-revving on a downgrade they can't handle anything over 3,000 or the valves float. When the valves start floating and they hit the pistons and it knocks the keepers out...game over.
3000, I thought was around 2500, good to know, I have 855, and I never push over 2300 because I was always worried about getting to close to the destruction zone.
Great video! It would be cool to strip one of these engines down after it's been partially damaged by doing this, but before catastrophic failure. So we can see what it looks like when it's already limping on it's last legs, but not completely toast.

We were totally unaware of what we were doing (both of us inexperienced with diesel). The top of that motor blew up sending me to the floor and shrapnel all over the shop. I am fairly certain that's where my lack of hearing and fear of diesels came from. Haha. It's a memory I will never forget.
After the first few seconds of them spraying, I though “that would suckkk if they dropped a can in the pipe. I didn’t even see the can fall in, but then I saw him pull the pipe off (I thought for some reason the turbo failed) and saw the can and died laughing. 🤣
I've some very strong 855 big cam engines. Had a boss who liked building them extra loose. Thing would smoke out a 10 acre field every morning of winter but after coming to temp the only smoke you'd see was fuel. No problems breaking the speed limits of VA highways with 83,000 lbs.

Guys comon i think we are smarter than this. I believe the damage is due to preignition due to fuel air beeing permixed. If you would inject through the injectors i think all would be fine. The ethers are after all a cleaner diesel alt fuel. I believe the same would happen if you sprayed diesel into the turbine.
You can have one “runaway” on lpg with a mixer, I’m sure if you do it right you can even get an idle below redline, mine was just a hair above it before I shut the ignition off and it kept going
I've owned Cummins products primarily, and to watch this old big block die was kinda tough. My first semi had a Big Cam IV in it, and it was a good unit.
You should pull the turbo oil supply line off and put it in the inlet of the turbo for the next one you destroy! Or rig up some sort of external oil feeding so it doesn't lock up from lack of oil in the crankcase. I've always wanted to see one run away on oil.
Keep the exhaust connected so the smoke doesn’t cover the action at the engine block I’m waiting to see a window open in the side of one of the engine blocks

Well that was a special type of fun that my wife would never get... I was a student in the Diesel program at Santa Rosa Jr College and my instructor gave me the thumbs up on fabricating a heat exchanger using the waste heat off the exhaust stack. The purpose of the heat exchanger was to thin up the viscosity of used veggie oil and let the Cat motor suck it back up as fuel. We had attached a water brake to measure horse power difference between veggie oil vs real diesel. Anyways half way into the semester some of the piston had enough of this BS and went on strike. They melted and exploded like a volcano. No one got hurt but it was truly amazing when the exhaust started pouring orange sparks all over the shop floor.
Having watched the video, i need to see the teardown now because I'm calling a "no-blow". I've a feeling all that happened was you bent/burned some valves although the final clunk may have been a piston, but to be different, i call it as you only bent some valves and cremated the turbo. ;) Oh, and have you seen NEUTRAL DROP's channel? they do some pretty entertaining content too, as well as ol' Peg. A 14 liter? Must be an 855, otherwise known as a ‘250’. I drove a ‘73 Gillig school bus with that engine. (It was turned sideways and mounted under the floor, midship). That was the best sounding bus in the fleet. The 743 (known as a 220) also had a sweet sound, but that mighty 855 couldn’t be stopped. So much freaking torque you could climb a wall with that 10-speed Eaton Roadranger behind it!
I would of possibly paid for that engine, emailed you 200 times asking questions and negotiating on the price to then end up wasting all your time by not purchasing it. It would be perfect to sit next to the rest of the shit in my yard the town is threatening me to remove.

Try putting holes in those cans, some how to get the liquid out. Pour them in a commercial lawn spray bottle and then pressurize that with the hand pump and u can spray a whole lot inside at once. Trick is how do I get the either out of the can with out exploding it.
The key is to get the right mixture for maximum rpm... you guys were feeding the cosby to close to the pipe. That way you can put her down with more of a bang lol

Had a driver spraying into the dust bowl to get an engine started. It basically kept breathing ether after start till the piston crowns melted.

I don't think that would work for a mechanical pump due to ether being a solvent instead of a lubricant like Diesel

Love to see you try and blow up an IVECO engine. We have one in a FIAT loader and the damn thing doesn't stop. Weve ran it out of oil till it wouldn't turn over added oil and it fired right up. We had it sitting for five years till the vines took it over and I told a buddy of mine it would fire right up on the shitty diesel still in it. Try putting holes in those cans, some how to get the liquid out. Pour them in a commercial lawn spray bottle and then pressurize that with the hand pump and u can spray a whole lot inside at once. Trick is how do I get the either out of the can with out exploding it.
