I started on the tenor banjo back in HS mid 60s Drove fr Tucson to the 1967 Contest when it was actually IN Topanga Canyon. David Lindley was the host announcer. This incredible 13 yr old fiddler blew everybody away with her rendition of "Mockingbird". Somewhere I have a reel to reel tape!
I love USA like this. with nice peoples and nice music. People living in country side are the BEST any where in the world.Easy and Kool . from France Stephane
The older I get, the more I appreciate this music from my Oklahoma childhood. I now have another place to get to before it's oo late! I doubt that a linear presentation of the various categories and players would have been as enjoyable as this sort of freeform, variational joy fest.
I have a Banjo. i have had it for years, i really would like to play it , but i never had the time to learn, now i do and can't find anyone to learn with. love the video. Thank's for sharing.love the music, maybe i will make it there one year.. but i don't really think so. loved the video, Thank's for sharing.
This is fun to see. Around 1974 I was vacationing and visiting a friend on the west coast (I'm a banjo player from Arkansas) and the friend took me to this festival. It featured John Hickman and Pat Cloud - great players. Also many fine old time players and some beautiful instruments.
Just love to see all the young musicians rubbing shoulders with inspirational older players. I live thousands of miles away but one day I would love to catch this event.
I am a metal head typically but there is something about this music I love and have ever since I was a kid. Awesome musicianship and the fact they are keeping that style of music alive.
2013-53rd Annual. I had a blast it so sad that we don't know if we'll ever another festival. I took alot of pictures so I can look back at good memories. Pictures and ticket .I saved this video too.since I lisen to bluegrass you tube put this on my phone for me .such a great time and cmmerrodery. Hopefully we can have more festival's in the future..
There's ALL KINDS of music going on around the world that we are not exposed to unless we seek it out, eh? You can hear bluegrass on the radio still, however.........this Contest and Documentary are awesome. Thank you !!
I play the banjo ,guitar, mandolin and harmonica, but being in another country i really miss getting together with other musicians and doing some classic americana ..country music. Love this contest.
Music, food and fun you have got to love it any time that comes together! I hope this festival continues for years to come and there ought to be a whole lot more of them. Thank you for taking the time to make the documentary and posting it.
Good to see again, thanks for sharing your video. I went as a youngster with Mary Ellen Clark, my guitar teacher and one of the founding board members with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Still going at 88 years young!
lot of hidden talent all ages I love the freedom to mingle with any and all the people. great to see young and old play together.paul e. Brewer lake placid, south Florida 83 and growing, "OLDER" I love all the different kinds of music. great day the LORD. has made !
What I remember best about the festival was hearing Amazing Grace for the first time sung by a roomful of people. I'd never heard anything as beautifully amazing as that before in my young life. It helped point the way to a future where the Lord lives in my life.
It might be two years ago, but this was the best and enjoyable video, and so varied, the talents of the young especially was wonderful, I will spread the word about Topanga, Thank you from John in England.
QUE HERMOSA VIDA DE COMPARTIR LA MÚSICA TÍPICA ENTRE FAMILIAS DE UNA NACIÓN, ASÍ SE PRESERVA EL CARÁCTER DE UN PAÍS. SU UNIDAD, SU MODO DE VIDA QUE CONSERVAN, FOMENTAN Y DEFIENDEN. DIOS BENDIGA A ESA GRAN NACIÓN. EE.UU DE AMÉRICA. ME ENCANTÓ ESTE VIDEO. CONGRATULATION TO TOPANGA BANJO FIDDLE CONTEST
Wish this was a more common atmosphere to find! I think we really lose more than we realise with the performer/audience dichotomy in our mainstream musical culture! Lessons to be learned from these wonderful people
I was searching for something and found this instead. I do admire a five string banjo, a flat back mandolin and a dobro guitar playing slide while the fiddle plays chords...
20:23 Thank you son for restoring my faith in American youth. And then later... "I'm gonna go home and lay on the couch".....Exactly, when you are a kid that is your comfort zone! This is what Americana is all about. The "Roots", the "Folk" The heart of the real american culture immortalized in music and seeing it is still appreciated among the young.
Congratulations on making this. It could have been an earnest coverage of the competition; instead, we are treated to a lively and thoughtful coverage of the event itself. So great to see young and old showing that this music continues to thrive in a spirit of community.
I was involved in the video production and we actually got "two, two, two mints in one!"-- musicians offering the results of months and months of practice, hoping to win a prize and send the link across the world to wherever friends and relatives are waiting. Then, the pressure's off and the fun begins. Much thanks to teresa crespo hartendorf for capturing all the fun. I'm watching this anew from a hospital bed, five years on and just keeps getting better!
I am metal head also and love the bass out sometimes. But good old bluegrass was the foundation and soal of all music. I love that music till this day. Is great to hear is still going strong.
JUST GREAT! I enjoy very much to listening this good music. I'm from Switzerland where we unfortunately don't have such nice contests. Our young people unfortunately going more to Hard Rock or even Heavy Metal that I don't like at all.
Yup ! This event just made My bucket list going to have to check it out, I attend as many Bluegrass events in My area as I can " Minnesota " and because I am retired now that number will increase ! God Bless All. Kevin
It's a toss up but I think the best musicians in the world are either from the hallowed halls of Carnegie (classical) or on the dusty doorstep of a cabin in Appalachia. If I had to pick I'd have to go with the bluegrass crowd. Awesome musicians of all ages.
It's easy: 1. Fly into LAX 2. Rent a car 3. Drive west on U.S. 101 and Exit at Agoura Hills 4. Turn south and follow the signs. The festival is on the Paramount Ranch which is still a working TV and movie set. But not on Topanga Banjo Fiddle Day!
I am a Brazilian and I love the customs of the United States .. I would like to have been born in this wonderful and humble Country where people have a wonderful culture ... here in Brazil there is no such thing ... here you only have crap ... I have Shame on my country!
im from brazil and i loved watch this video... maybe some day God help to go there to see in close... BTW, how many days takes the festival ? hugs from brazil
The growing popularity of the blue grass movement is and has been growing over the years, it's driven not only because of it's old school sounds of the past so many of us grew up with. It represents a time when life was harder but allot more fun and when freedom of the country was still a real thing. Rock music became the sound of modern day freedom but it's roots came from the sounds of blue grass.

Not gonna lie, hailing from Appalachia, I had no idea Cali had a scene like this. Respect.
I love USA like this. with nice peoples and nice music. People living in country side are the BEST any where in the world.Easy and Kool . from France Stephane
I bought my first ukulele here and I haven't put it down since!! So glad this is a family tradition between my dad and I

You should check out The Carolina Chocolate Drops
Patrick Sutton You're feeling the heart and soul of the music, that's the difference between it and metal.
Banjo has a very metallic sound - which is great!
Metal has plenty of heart and soul, maybe even an abundance of it. It just has balls, too.
Check out "wait so long" by the band trampled by turtles. Epic!
It's great to see so many kids playing and carrying on their musical traditions.

I still cannot believe how many people come here! Way cool!
What a wonderful thing, rather than crime, conflict or aggression, people involved in making music. Beautiful!

Now this was really cool. I enjoy how they just get together an pick. Great music.
Fantastic work capturing this festival on digital. I wasn't there, but now feel like I was and certainly want to go back!

Great to watch, I'd like to go back. I won first place, advanced banjo in 2009.. great fun! (especially when you win)
It might be two years ago, but this was the best and enjoyable video, and so varied, the talents of the young especially was wonderful, I will spread the word about Topanga, Thank you from John in England.
Loved this! Could NOT stop watching!!
....it's been a year. Have you stopped watching? QUITTER!
Me too.
Im Appalachain born and bred. This festival is awesome, never heard of it until now.
This is why, at one time, i was a member of the South Florida Bluegrass Association. Great experiences/folks.

It is so refreshing to see talented young kids play so enthusiastically
This was such a pleasure to watch, thank you.
Incredible playing !! A LOT of talent there.
Very well done documentary. Once I started, I couldn't stop watching. Felt like I was there (I play the fiddle). Thanks for posting it.
Yay - some traditional Scottish fiddling at 35:30. Good to see the Californians keeping in touch with roots of their music!
Took me a while to realize this was in Socal. It all makes more sense now ... looks like a good time.
love how people walk up and start jamming w/ whoever else is playing. check your ego at the gate and just have fun
Wish this was a more common atmosphere to find! I think we really lose more than we realise with the performer/audience dichotomy in our mainstream musical culture! Lessons to be learned from these wonderful people
A lovely documentary, well done. The judge who didn't like it is just peed off he wasn't featured handing out the prizes. People having fun!
Thank you for sharing this. It should be longer, the complete event ... !!!
That is great - music transcends all - don't matter what ya like to listen to, this can only get yer feet tappin and put a smile on yer face.
Growing up in the Mountains of Virginia i never knew folks from California had this type of class..
Well, ya gotta figure, a lot of the folks currently living in in Ca. / west coast are from the east; if not recently, they came from somewhere.
that was my reaction but I couldn't put it into words
Only if they move there from Virginia.
There is a very vibrant traditional music scene in California. Bluegrass, Cajun, Irish, Scottish, Blues, Jazz, you name it, we've got it.

Real Americans , god bless you all from England
Funny how this music calls to our blood. I was born in Canada, but all my mother's side is American in North Carolina. Love you USA.
JUST GREAT! I enjoy very much to listening this good music.
I'm from Switzerland where we unfortunately don't have such nice contests. Our young people unfortunately going more to Hard Rock or even Heavy Metal that I don't like at all.

eu estou muito feliz em ve-los e ouvi-los.
The big jam session in the beginning is probably better than the contest.
It's a toss up but I think the best musicians in the world are either from the hallowed halls of Carnegie (classical) or on the dusty doorstep of a cabin in Appalachia. If I had to pick I'd have to go with the bluegrass crowd. Awesome musicians of all ages.
