    Huge thanks for this, Kenny. Just set up my kit mics and got up and running v quickly thanks to this.
    For any noobs like me:
    One tip I would add for people to look out for is you might need to extend your UI a bit in various places in order to have certain buttons/controls appear as sometimes they get hidden easily, even if they're definitely not hidden in the Theme Adjuster.
    Another one is to keep an eye on your Preferences > Device settings, as in here it might by default have only 2 inputs from first to last, but you will likely need to increase it to accommodate the max your audio device has e.g. 8/12/16 inputs. Cheers!

    Well done! I'm using Reaper for more than 10 yrs (starting with Reaper 3) and I think I have a real good workflow for doing my stuff. But I love your videos because in every videos there are small things I learn to improve even more and make things faster and easier!
    This "technique" I worked out some month ago esp. for bass and guitar tracks. E.g. my standard bass "frontend" is my SansAmp VT Bass with "uneffected/DI" and "effected" tracks. Or for acoustic guitars I record the pickup with one or two mics - or electric with additional DI ... etc. And this "technique" makes it _ways easier_ in editing / comping. Else you need to be very cautious not to miss a track when doing cuts and such stuff. And they are always "synchron" - you can not screw things when moving.
    So this video really encourages me for doing this for the whole drum-tracks. But sometimes I have drum recordings, where I need to edit / correct little things - esp. kick drum. So maybe I will let the kick mics on a separate track but combine the rest (due to spill-over editing single tracks makes not a big option either). But having only two "tracks" will make it ways easier than the 10 tracks I have by now.
    So thanks very, very much! Great video - as all your videos! So liked, keep going and best regards, Stefan

    Thanks for putting this out there! At 1:51 you state to change your input to Input: 8 Channel > Input 1...Input 8 [8 Chan]. In my system, I see Input: 8 Channel as an option, but there's no sub option to select. I am using a Roland TD-25k kit/brain with Reaper. Today, I can set the input to Input: MIDI > TD-25 > All Channels and see/hear/record drums using my kit and the Toontrack Superior Drummer 3 plugin. I am clearly missing a configuration here. I have tracked via this method as well as one input per track. Certainly this method works better for comping takes, or at least it's less likely to cause issues with having one drum have the wrong take selected. Where it trips me up is when I want to clean up the waveforms. I generally delete out 80% of the waveform on tom tracks just to clean things up. I know that gating generally removes the need to do this, or perhaps just enveloping the mapped playback tracks would do it, but I still find it cramps my instincts. On the other hand, one drum per track and you really have to make sure you're selecting all the items when you move things around/cut. Maybe I'm missing something but why when you group tracks, you can't set it to force waveform edits to cascade across all items?

      In general, if you want to move a kick or snare hit, all the tracks should be movced together. But you could also use "Item: Explode multichannel audio or MIDI to new one-channel items" and put all the one channel items on their separate tracks and work that way from then on.

    I never thought to setup recording drums in Reaper that way. I always do track per mic (12 in my drum sessions). And route them to various busses (toms , OH , Rooms , etc). Then a master drum buss. I like all the control and options I have that way. But this seems really cool. I will try something similar to what you showed here. Cool way of recording drums you have.

    Amazing video, once again. Doing it this way should also make the drum editing process a lot easier since all the tracks are already kind of glued together.
    I'm currently thinking about if it makes sense to use the same logic with guitar DI tracks. So for example if you want to have the rhythm guitars going through more than one "rig" in parallel. That way, you'd only have one track with the DI signal in the track view and sending that one to different monitoring tracks which you only need in the mixer. You would be 100% sure that the input signal will be the same if you comp takes or do some other editing to them.

    Dear Kenny, I have a question: When I do repetitive punch-ins, the length of them is never the same, and sometimes I record the right take and I see on it all those annoying splits that show me the length of the previous takes. How can I not see those "splits"? I am usually forced dragging the good take from the first split till it becomes visually smooth, but I hope you can help me with this.
    Thanks!!!!!!

    • @nj1255
      @nj1255 2 года назад +1

      The easiest thing to do would be to just record the same length every time by doing a time selection and selecting "Time selection auto-punch" as your record mode. The other option is to go to the Options drop-down menu and select New recording that overlaps existing media items>Creates new media items in fixed lanes. All of your takes will be shown in their own lanes and not get split when recording new ones.

  • @joeygwood

    I know you said that you used to use Logic (and still do sometimes). How do you compare this multitrack recording/comping workflow to Logic's? Where all you have to do is group the tracks so that comping one track comps them all identically. It seems a lot more intuitive than anything I've tried so far with REAPER. That said, your idea of recording multiple inputs to a single item, while keeping the sources separated within that item and routed to other tracks for mixing, is very clever and eliminates the need for item grouping for multitrack comping. However, I still find Logic's workflow to be superior for a few reasons. The comping system allows you to swipe over entire takes without losing them, which means you can keep the amount of visible split points to a minimum without eliminating any takes. Also, actually recording each input to its own track means you can nudge the individual items left or right to correct timing. I also prefer to do my initial gain staging by adjusting the item volumes, which I wouldn't be able to do if all my tracks are technically a single item. For most sessions, I prefer to record and comp in Logic and then mix in REAPER.

      There are still 8 recorded tracks (channels), they are just routed in the Drum track.

    • @HandWiredAmps
      @HandWiredAmps 2 года назад +2

      Now I see what you're asking. Jumped in to Reaper and tried this, ugh. I can see where this would be lots of extra work to "Explode Multichannel Audio" to just fix an individual track and not all 8 at once. Reaper does save the wave file as a single file (with 8 channels) and not 8 separate files. I'm just trying Logic too for the last month (New Mac) so I'll get on this comparison today. Still Love Reaper though and will use this technique in the future! Just need to make sure my drums are tight...at least the tape is free.
      Thanks Joey and Kenny.

    • @joeygwood
      @joeygwood 2 года назад +2

      @@HandWiredAmps I understand that. Those tracks are recorded to a single item though, so you can't move them independently of each other without rendering each channel to its own track, which means you'd need to use the item grouping system in REAPER, which isn't the best for multitrack comping.

    • @jeremydbjbjbjb
      @jeremydbjbjbjb 2 года назад +3

      @@HandWiredAmps yeah, for simple in-phase comping of a single multitrack source, @REAPER Mania's technique is great. But if you want to do individual lane-based automation (and be able to see the waveform), or comping of more complex material, where you still want the advantages of grouping, but also want to be able to nudge stuff around, it quickly gets complicated, definitely not possible using this technique. Logic's solution here is really elegant. I find REAPER's take stuff is mostly good, but it's a little error-prone -- f.e. if you're viewing all takes at once, it's easy to accidentally switch takes when selecting items -- and just not all that smooth. I hope that the new multi-lane stuff that's in development can be used to improve the workflow.

There is a recording option to "record output to tracks".The script you mentioned is probably easier, but it's always good to know a 'stock' way

    Does this work with midi drums? I'll have to try.

    Great video, love this method. Wish there was a way to show only the kick and snare for example in the multichannel file, because those tiny waveforms make pocketing stuff to the drums harder. Any workarounds for this?

    Hello Kenny! Awesome video!
    What if i would want to ajust for example the fade in on one Snare hit? Could if still be done without afecting the hole take?

    Thanks for this Kenny. As usual, you're an inspiration on all things Reaper and this has opened my eyes to a new method of drum recording. I'm going to try this method to record some drums this weekend. A few questions though - 1) I have three toms miced up. How would you suggest grouping them for this approach? 2) Is it possible to render/export the individual drum tracks after comping and if so, how do I go about doing this?

      I think, something about rendering stems is what you are looking for.

      I would give each tom it's own destination track. You can export on a track by track basis. Just choose the destination track I'm using for monitoring each drum.

    I usually have to time align my drum tracks and this would be easier for that unless perhaps you use dynamic splitting of snare and bass drum tracks to automate. Wouldn’t that require splitting the snare and kick items out, at least temporarily?

    Great video Kenny with nice explanation!! Would you plan a video for if we have one PC for Recording only connected to our User Interface with mics e.t.c and one other to process the mixing at some other place or town to how we can transfer the recording template between these two Workstations without have GB of Data and a bit difficulty to transfered them??? Reaper has some option like " Save it as Project"?

    Hi Kenny, thank you for sharing this Tutorial. It seems to be a great Option to Record Drums with Reaper in a clean an easy Way. I´am from Germany, so my English is not the best. Sorry for that... :) I have a Question, because one Thing doesnt work in my Reaper. At Minute 4.30 you open up the Mixer to cennect the DRUM-Track to the Monitor-Tracks. In my Reaper-Setup this does not work. If I open up the Mixer, the Routing-Option escapes from my DRUMS-Track showing in the MCP. Can you help me with that? My Reaper-Version is6.41. That would be great! Thanks, Heiko

    Noob question, I have been getting into Reaper for a little while now and have started writing my own music (direct guitars in, direct bass in, drum plugin - MT power drums).
    If I perform render as a test, I've noticed clipping during the rendering process occurring if I add more tracks (no clipping on input or on the mixer though) and have to drop the volume per track right across the mixer. is this normal? BTW, I am using Windows 10 64bit with an i-7 processor and 32gb ram.
