You think it's good just sitting in your room, imagine it's the summer of 1977, at 17 and your listening to this song at max on your radio, driving to the beach with friends wearing your favorite shorts and flip flops, not a worry in the world. What memories that brings back at age 64 when I hear it again on your channel.

1977... No cell phones back then. And if the Audience held up lighters for every great Song they performed, each person would've had to bring at least 5 lighters, and the Entire Audience would've looked like they were standing in the middle of a constant bonfire.
I hope you react to more Eagles songs... you won't be disappointed!

70 year old here. We just lived the experience fully. Took it all in and experienced the sheer joy without any distraction. I can still see the pictures of concerts in my head, remember the feeling in my body and the thrill of sharing it with the crowd. It was amazing and it cost about $20 to see some of these great bands. I’m so glad I lived it but I do enjoy watching young people see it for the first time. No auto tune, no studio backing tracks. Just pure beautiful music live on stage.

This is actual music being enjoyed as it should be. It's a bunch of guys on stage playing musical instruments and singing. No fireworks or elaborate sets or a dozen backup dancers and six costume changes while flying from a trapeze. And I loved that you noticed the lack of cell phones. Everyone in that crowd was into the music rather than staring at their cell phones or trying to record music.

I attended an Eagles concert in 1975 and as I walked into to the auditorium I saw four Cerwin-Vega Double D Horns on the floor in front of the stage. These were the special bass speakers developed for the movie Earthquake. I looked at my buddy and said: "You're going to hear some bass tonight". The bass that night was totally enveloping. Really awesome. One of the most memorable concerts that I ever attended.

There is no way that you go back and view this stuff when you have thousands of videos and pictures. Even with technology, I may take 2 or 3 pictures at a concert then my phone rests in my pocket.

As a musician, you will appreciate this. When I was 16 in late 1970 or very early 71 our band was playing a Saturday night dance at the Unitarian church just a few blocks from the beach in the Los Angeles area (Redondo Beach to be exact) when Joe Walsh wandered in. He was the lead guitarist in this song and was wearing the bandana. He had been in a studio recording one of his many solo albums between the times he played with the James Gang and The Eagles. We were a rock and roll blues band 2 lead guitars, a keyboardist, Bassist (me) and a drummer. He liked what he heard and asked to sit in with us. Of course we said yes and he played 4 or 5 songs with us. Great ego boost for us. The crowd really liked it also. We were good and were headlining at college dances, festivals and even played warm up for a coliseum show. We were too young to play in the clubs serving drinks but for musicians in Los Angeles were working pretty steadily.

Millie, I am old enough to have experienced those days and yes, things were very different, but it all depended on each individual person. Some of us were passionate about life and love, and others were not. Some appreciated music and felt it deeply, and others just consumed what they were given. That does not change. It's up to each of us.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to live through the Eagles albums in real time and they were all over the radio for years. Their early records are just gold start to finish still. Now, the guitar player in this clip is Joe Walsh, who wasn't in the band originally, but he was in other great bands starting in the late 1960's with The James Gang and you should absolutely listen to their songs "Funk #49" and "Walk Away". He also had a big solo career after that with killer songs like "Rocky Mountain Way". But, his contributions to The Eagles, especially in the legendary solo in "Hotel California" were perfect. We almost lost him to drugs and alcohol at one point, but thankfully he made his way out of his addictions and is still going strong. Yeah, having spent a lot of my teenage years at concerts in the '70's - including seeing The Eagles in 1975 - it was a golden time for music.

This song was co-written by Jackson Browne, who for awhile lived downstairs from Glen Frey. Frey listened to Browne working on the song for weeks, then offered up the second verse (Standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona) and they finished it together. It was the Eagles first hit song.
You should listen to some of Jackson Browne's other stuff -- a good place to start is the version of "Running on Empty" from the No Nukes concert in 1979. Also the live performance of The Load Out/Stay from 1978.

Fun Fact: Jackson Browne originally wrote this song but was having trouble finishing it and asked his friend Glen Frey for help with it. The finished song became the Eagle's first single.
The line about Winslow AZ actually came from an incident that happened to JB but it happened in Flagstaff, AZ not Winslow. And she was driving a Toyota LOL
If you ever get that time machine working transport yourself down to Huntington Beach, CA south of the HB Pier, look for the tall kid with dark hair surfing a short board and suffering terminal sun burn :). We can go get some strips & sauce down at the pier and then later I will take you to the Golden Bear on PCH and we can see who's playing there.
Trust me, you would be a very popular girl in the late 70's. :)

RE: phones and cameras. I agree, I went to Washington DC in 1960 and took a camera. I took hundreds of pictures. Don't know where they are now and I don't remember ANYTHING about the trip. You have to just take it in. This was live and they are obviously having fun so that makes it look effortless.

I'm kind of missing the banjo on this version that they had in the studio recording. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

From their first album. I think it was 1972. I listened to it all the time on 8-track in my car. I was in high school at the time.

As a bass player you should listen to "I Can't Tell You Why". The singer is the bass player.

The Eagles were an extension of the country/ rock fusion that the Byrds created in the transition from the 60's to the 70's.

They also paved way to the bands like Boston and Journey all though they were very different in style, forming the sort of new wave compared to
      70's soft rock.

How did the Eagles find their sound to begin with? Let's give credit to Ricky Nelson and the Stone Canyon band as well...Randy Meisner was Rick's bass player for a while in that band. Gee, wonder where they got the idea to combine country and rock? Rick Nelson did it first. Also Mike Nesmith of the Monkees had his band afterward called the First National Band. And Linda Ronstadt had 3 of the future Eagles in her back up band, set them free to form a band...she knew they had talent. When the Eagles morphed out of the Country Rock Sound, to me they were no longer the Eagles...partially due to Joe Walsh joining the band...they became a different band. Even here the extended guitar solo shows they had changed...there was no solo like that on the studio record.
