Kansas, Styx, Boston, Van Halen, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, The Cars, REO Speedwagon and numerous other bands all hit us about the same time in the mid to late 70's. It was an amazing time. They all had a unique sound that was instantly recognizeable.
Don’t forget TOTO and April Wine! And some Meatloaf.

Harmonizing was a very big part of so many bands back then. It all sounded so amazing, and still does.
Don't forget about Lynyrd Skynyrd in the early 70's or ACDC pure classic along with the others you mentioned would love to see a Free Bird live 76 reaction I know its been reacted to several times on RUclips but would love to see her take on it
Some if these band's are excellent some definitely are not. REO Speedwagon fir ex. Not every band in the 70s was great nomatter what you say. Foreigner were excellent,, Boston you were right about both
This song needs to see a cultural resurgence. Beyond being damn good musically, the lyrics have a message that a lot of people would do well to hear and take to heart.
The show "Supernatural" made it extremely popular a few years ago.

In AEW a wrestling promotion a wrestling group called the elite uses this as their entrance theme and the entire crowd sings the song while they walk to the ring

Same here. I'm 67 years old. We grew up with the same music. I finally got to see Kansas live at Mohegan Sun casino many years ago. They were outstanding! Steve Walsh was with them and his voice was outstanding! I had thought he would have lost a step or two with his age and what he had been through, but NOPE! He was so good!

This song was also used in the TV show Supernatural that went for 15 seasons.
I was in junior high school when this came out. I am 57 yrs od now and this is still one of my favorite songs. I listen to it every night at work on my pay list. Never gets old. Great reaction beautiful.
This song is very well known from the Supernatural tv series starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Sam and Dean Winchester - "Saving people, hunting things, the family business"
Yes, from the 70's, when the greatest rock bands were putting out one great album and then another, and then another, great album. I know, I bought them all. I was in my twenties. I was 18 to 29 years old during 70's. What a wonderful time to be alive, with all the fantastic music.
"I think I've heard of a band called Kansas". lol. Kids these days, I'm feeling so old. This was one of their biggest songs Millie. I wouldn't call this prog, I'd put this into the category of 70's rock. The best decade for rock bands there ever was.
This song is definitely among their less proggier tunes. Though, it does have some proggy elements, messing with the time signatures.
That being said, Kansas was definitely a prog band, (not that you said they weren't) with much of their catalog being very progressive.
You've gotta keep in mind that today's American kids didn't have the radio influence that we did, much less foreign kids.
That and it is the theme song for Supernatural.
You also have to consider that she is in the UK. Don't automatically assume hit songs in the US is known world-wide. I wouldn't expect you to know some of the biggest hits in Asia in the 80s, right?
Except this song was number 51 on the uk rock charts when it came out. Number 58 in Australia, and number 5 in Canada.

Kansas was a great band from the 70's. Their musical style is a fusion of hard rock, southern rock & progressive rock. "Carry On Wayward Son" & "Dust In The Wind" are their 2 biggest hits. But they had other good songs such as "Point Of Know Return", "Hold On", "People Of The South Wind", "Play The Game Tonight", "Fight Fire With Fire", "All I Wanted" etc.

I suppose we all have our taste in music. the last 5 songs you listed though, for me are no good at all, would not make it to my Kansas top 20 songs list.
This song is really good, but i would rank this like 12th in my top 20 Kansas songs list.

Although the song was released 30 years earlier, it was 100% fit for the TV series "Supernatural"

Same album had "Dust on the Wind", complete contrast to this one. Yet epic in its own right. I was working at our campus radio station, my own show, and ran the record (before CDs) and reviewed the new music and programmed them for air play. This unknown album came in over summer break. I gave one listen, and immediately picked Carry On and dust on the wind for rotation. Months later, I had to make sure they were back in rotation when the album went big nation wide. I was so puffed up about myself..😮
Carry On Wayward Son is from Leftoverture while Dust In The Wind is on the follow up album Point Of Know Return

This is the song that made me want to sing for a living.... EPIC
I saw Kansas 4 times over the years, the first time, they played at my high school about 3 years before this album was released! This was an amazing song, and incredibly, it was composed by Kerry Livgren (the blonde guitarist & piano player) overnight. The band was about to leave for the recording studio from their rehearsal hall, and Kerry told the band about this new song, They spent a couple of hours learning it, went to record it, and it was their first really big hit. While Kansas was an amazing Prog band, this song really wasn't Prog, at least not for them. The big guy, with the big hair & beard was named Robbie Steinhardt (RIP) who was a terrific singer, and an incredible violinist. His voice, combined with Steve Walsh (the organist & lead vocalist) really worked so well together. Kansas is still touring, though the only original members are Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitarist wearing white.) After this album, they began touring as the opening act for Queen, and they became a really huge band in the late 70s and early 80s.
Not quite. They were about to LEAVE the studio, getting ready to pack up, when Livgren walked in with the song. They laid it down and could not believe what they had. They were so tight because of their Record label, who had them on the road almost non-stop early on trying to build a base.
It was great being a teenager in the 70’s.
Their Leftoverture (sp?) album is epic from beginning to end.
Saw them, must have been 76, when they were touring promoting Leftoverture. This song, Miracles Out of Nowhere, Magnum Opus, were on that. And The Wall, a few years before Pink Floyds concept album

Steve Walsh (the lead singer) was probably top 5 of rock singers in his prime. Later on he lost a lot of his voice unfortunately.

Kerry Livgren (the blond guitarist) was their principle songwriter. His lyrics are a spiritual journey. He eventually became a born again Christian in 1980. Reflected in the song “Crossfire “

They are still touring. Only Rich Williams (the bushy haired guitarist) and Phil Ehart (the drummer) remain but they have a talented lineup of musicians with them. Sounds like the old band and then some! Worth seeing if they come to an area near you

Phil has stopped touring after a massive heart attack - although he has never said he won't rejoin them after his rehab is over. He still manages them, however.

Kansas has an entire Universe of great songs that no one (besides true fans) has heard before. Sure everyone knows the 2 great tunes they released on singles ("Carry on Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind" --- which you must listen to next!) but there are many other tremendously inventive and progressive songs. Try the following 11 on for size when you get a chance (listed in order of release) --- and there are many other's --- most of their great material appeared on their first 5 albums released between 1974 and 1977:

I never knew him, but grew up in same small city where the singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh grew up in. I was a freshman when he was a senior in our HS. Got to watch him in all of his early local bands. He was exceedingly talented even in his early days, plus a real monster on his Hammond b3 organ. His local band prior to the formation of Kansas was 'White Clover', & they were balls to the walls killer as well! Thanks Millie.

Hey 👋 Millie, You’ll be diving down one awesome rabbit hole with these guys!😁I first started listening to these guys when I was in junior high school in the mid seventies and I can honestly say that their music 🎶 (and lyrics) completely changed my entire outlook on on life as well as music 🎼 They had a “huge” influence on me at that very turbulent time in everybody’s life and really shaped the way I approached music as well as life! If I had to pick one song of theirs that sums it all up, It would have to be “Magnum Opus”without a doubt! I think it’s their crowning achievement at the height of their powers in my humble opinion. It encompasses everything that they were capable of in one song! A true masterpiece by one of my most beloved bands 🫶✌️🤟❤

The only bad thing about this song is that it does not give Robbie Steinhardt any place to show off his chops on electric violin.
So difficult to fit an instrument with the nature and pitch of the violin in every prog rock song.
First off please don't take this personally Millie, I love your reactions. I'm glad young people are getting to hear and appreciate this great music from the seventies. I grew up in the 70's, 8-18 years old, when all this great music was hitting the air waves. Kansas, Styx, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, ect. they were all just listed as ROCK. There were no progressive radio stations, there were no progressive sections in the record stores, all this great music was just ROCK. Each and every band back then just had thier own distinct sound, when a song came on you knew who it was by thier sound. People today are always trying to catagorize everything and break it down. Just enjoy the ROCK of the 70's like you do. Thanks and keep it up.

Hi there. Saw this and I had to subscribe to your channel. Kansas, I think really put themselves on the map by doing a song called Dust In The Wind but this particular song is my favourite by them. They actually used this song as the title song for the TV series supernatural. Absolutely fantastic band and thank you so much for doing them on your channel. Kansas played at my college homecoming weekend in 1976. It was the LOUDEST damned concert I ever heard. They played in our small gym, which seated 3500 for basketball in those days. We all walked out after several songs, because our ears were in serious pain! Now, I loved this band, and I love loud music still, at 67, but damn! I hate it when my ears bleed. We went back to my dorm, next door to the gym on our small campus, and opened the window. They sounded pretty good there! I hope the band can still hear. Their sound man obviously couldn't, or he would have turned it down. I probably heard 100 concerts from '73 to '77, but none came close to that loudness. It was overwhelming.

This song was a huge hit when I was a kid. As soon as I heard it on the radio, I went out and bought the vinyl LP. I went to see Kansas in New Haven, CT at a medium sized arena. It was my first concert and the arena was almost sold out but we did get tickets but the seats were actually behind the stage so my brothers and I ended up watching the back of their heads the whole time. Live and learn on seat selection! Point of Know Return gets my vote for the next Kansas song if you decide to try them again.

Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitars) being the only founding members left, the band is known for being a prog rock giant... the band's biggest records featured this former singer Steve Walsh ... Kansas changed members over time, and once featured Steve Morse (guitar) who is best known for his work w/ Deep Purple from 1994 to 2021.
Kansas' latest album is 'The absence of presence' (2020) w/ Ronnie Platt (lead vocals), Billy Greer (bass + vocals), Tom Brislin (keyboard + vocals)...

Kansas is one of the bands of that era that I've seen more times than I can count. They were always that good if you want to check out something a little more mellow with deep meaning words, the next tune to check out would likely be dust in the wind. The guy who sings and plays the tambourine plays the violin in that one. I remember seeing them perform it live when it first came out, and the violin player came up through a fog covered stage playing the violin for the violin part.

Seen these guy's in 1980 at the Summer Nights festival in Darmstadt Germany, 7 bands and Kansas was one of them, along with B.O.C., foreigner, 38 Special, Motorhead, More and one of my favorite bands Iron Maiden.
Robbie, the tamborine guy plays the violin on many songs. This is a deep rabbit hole. You will love it.

There are so many songs that they produced that will make you feel the same as you do here. Try "Dust in the Wind", "Point of Know Return", and one of my favorites "Portrait" (He Knew). They were very prolific for a relatively short period of time, but their music was so intense and wonderfully orchestrated. Do some research on them. You won't be disappointed.

I had a cassette with Leftoverture on one side and Point Of No Return on the other. I would listen to it all day at work. There isn't a weak song on Leftoverture. It's a masterpiece of epic proportion.

I was in my mid 20’s in the USAF when this album came out. I practically wore it out listening to it.

The best explanation I've read is that every section of this song is a "hook". Most songs are a lot of filler around a great hook. Not on this song, they're all hooks.
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks, CA (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
