One important thing I forgot to mention was when placing the joints for the arms there should be a bit of a bend on the elbow just like there is at the knee for the foot. Leave any questions you have in the comments below!
y go through long process stupid y just do all download and orient go to hierarcy joint reset the joint and orient ??? duffer 30 secends and it gets all done and according to your process even after you download you need to manage some joints
do you know what to do about the joints in the fingers? I have this problem where if you move the joints in the middle finger, it would drag the other fingers with it. do you have any solutions? I'm using Maya 2017
19:25 To expand or collapse all the sub joint groups same time you can click a root of the joint groups with pressing "Shift". I just put this note for anyone who don't know about it. Thank you for your video.
At 6:52 you should put in "Search for:" L_ instead of L alone. In "Replace with:" you should put R_ and then it will mirror names correctly. Just a tip. Awesome tutorial !
I saw that coming. i have made this mistake before.. his was cool because it made it ScoobDoo language ....Rt Reg Raggy LOL .. or engrish ... OOOOOK now we rig da rite reg LOL
For anyone else struggling to read the local rotation axes around 20:30 because they're too small: it seems that the size of the axes are linked to the display size of your move/rotate/scale tool. Press + a few times to make the tool display bigger, then go to Display > Transform display > Local rotation axes again. You might have to reselect everything in your outliner first. Hope this helps someone :)
If you do a dog as character, for the legs, don't forget to check ''Orientation'' in the Mirror Joint Options, so that the legs will have the same axes when orientating.
19:24 I just discover some trick to expand all the joints Hold Ctrl+Shift and click on the plus sign ------------ You can also select the hip and then Select > Hierarchy (Bar menu)
Nevermind, I figured it out. Like an idiot, I was clicking the plus sign on my keyboard, LOL. Then I noticed the "+" sign in Maya and tried that and it worked. But you don't have to hold Ctrl, only Shift-click the "+" sign and it works! Thanks for that heads up! Oh, and your Select->Hierarchy works faster for selecting everything. Another good one! Thanks!
If you are looking for a comprehensive video guide on how to download the comet scripts just watch the tutorial by 'Verónica Morera' and the video is called 'How to install the Comet Scripts'. Really useful
Error Script tip: Make sure you place your Comet Joint Script in the correct folder location. To notice if you have this error, your script history will tell you that it cannot find the script and give info on what files it's looking at. Place the Comet Joint Script on where it's searching at.
At 20:06 you can select all last joints (Like finger tip/Toe tip) from workspace , going into outliner then press F this will collapse all the joints..
Nice tutorial. Very helpful. I got a project due in two days and my first semester dumbass decided “I’m gonna make a space marine. Just like the Astartes project space Marines! It’s gonna be great!” Oh how I was wrong
I found that typing cometJointOrient(); in the script (with a uppercase 'O' for Orient instead of lowercase like in the video) is what made the script functional for me on Maya 2018 hopefully this helps
@@TheIntratec9 I am using Maya 2017 aswell and it worked for me. When you click on "Load script" see in what folder your software is looking for the script, if its empty you have to paste in that folder the script file, other issue is that you have to be sure you are running it in the MEL tab. Then be sure to type this: cometJointOrient(); Hope this helps
I do not understand your manual way of rotating the orientation and i dont understand the instructions of the link you sent. Can you PLEASE show us or me how you properly orient the axis manually?
Great tutorial! Lost it around the time we had to change orientation of the joints. Couldnt do that manually for some reason and didnt wanna create an account to download that script. Is there a way to do this from the start?
They have the link in the description. Once you go to the link, go to Joint Orient Tool and select 'Download It' underneath. On the next page you want to download the cometScripts.zip file and you can find the script in that folder
I don't get the part of the orient joints, i know X has to point the next joint, but I still don't get the Y and the Z, also when using the script it fixes all exept the opposite hand always, nice tutorial tho, i am learning a lot of rigging!!!!
Hello, it seems to be better with the sticky of the IK Handle on but if I want to rotate the entire character from the hip with the sticky it doesn`t work….I know I could group the character to do this but I want to make it walk a few steps before I rotate it and if I do this the pivot of the group stays behind, what do you recomend?
i followed your instrictions perfectly till 20:00. and then when i tried temp skin bind. the legs and feet dont even move. and when i move the shoulders, it moves the entire body and the arms dont even bend.
Hi! i would like to know what commands you used to highlight certain areas on the HEAD like mustache or hat only? I'm having trouble in doing so in Maya because it highlights almost everything when I'm trying to select certain faces. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!
is it really necessary to do the script good sir? is it impossible to use the orient joint tool in maya? ive been trying to use it and its confusing . . . im not sure if its the tool or is it just me being a dumb -_-
I am watching this just for the specific requirement as is I'm applying for 3D Artists yet giving an assessment for 3D Animation. wtf. btw always good to have you 3dEx.
Hi, the script doesnt seem to be there, it just keeps sending me to Comet cartoons where i then cant seem to locate the file under "Joint Orient Script"
I think he changed his website a little since last time I visited, in the comet cartoons site click on cometScripts.zip to download it. I think that includes all the tools he has made, but the Joint Orient Script is included there as well.
@3dEx Is it ever okay to have every joint that lines up with the world's 3 axes? Where every joint has an x axis that points in the same direction, every y axis points in the same direction and every z axis points in the same direction?

I am having trouble trying to orient my joints in the same way that you did in the video, when I select a joint and try to change its rotation it doesn't move. I have changed it from Orient Joint to World and then changing the Primary Axis, Secondary Axis, and so on... Also the third party script did not work on my computer or my version of Maya, but that may be because I was not placing it in the right area with the scripts... Any advice would be helpful!
Hey man your videos are awesome but i cannot find a proper link to the comet orient joint thing that works. Can you help with this please? you use to have a good link, i dont have it anymore and i just fformated my pc, forgot to save it =(
hey, I need some help. I am rigging a car right now and the side window glass is little bit tilted and the axis rotation for the move tool is not as it should be its straight and the window is tilted as I said, now I want to open the window with move tool but due to its orientation it not not going how it is supposed to be. and I have tried to change the axis rotation in move tool settings and also by pressing 'D' to change its pivot rotation both did't work. Please tell me what I am doing wrong or what should I do.
Hi thanks for the video! I have a question. When I pull the joint so my character is deformed. For example, I pull a joint in my leg and lift it, and it starts to shrink. I checked all orientation joint It looks correct (i think so) Does anyone know what is it?
I'm not finding the model in the dowload link. I realise there's more tutorials on how to make that model on the site, but I only have a little time to learn rigging right now.
out of curiosity, what happens if you do not station the character's feet on top of the grid? Can you move the character to the proper position in the future if you didn't do it immediately?

Is that yugioh falsebound kingdom music I’m hearing?
22:15. To orient the joints, all you have to do is go to Display - Transform Display - Local Rotation Axis rather than downloading anything.
Very clear and great video! Thank you for your help!
Very nice, clearly spoken , easy to follow. you should do more videos like this. and i love the ambient music, Great Job , keep them coming.

Why is there a jump-cut when he's explaining how to rotate joints. I feel like he missed something, because mine wont rotate.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. One question: why did not you add a root joint? is it unnecessary? I am seeing a lot of other tec.artists add one.
