its because studios dont put enough into their animation departments. there still is good animation out there, but its more few and far between. in the west at least, theres still japan where theres tons of gorgeous animation but the animators themselves are still underpaid. its sad but thats just kind of what happens when things get corporate, but its the fault of the studios, not animators nor something inherent to our time. you can find tons of people making this stuff and posting it online for totally free but sadly in the business it becomes about profit over passion. honestly the reason its become worse nowadays is because of disney buying fucking everything (simpsons included lol) and just trying to milk as much money out of it all, leaving the media landscape soulless because of its monopoly on it. everything disney buys just becomes dryer and more sanitized. marvel, star wars, even pixar nowadays.

I was driving around town the other day; and for some reason, this scene popped into my head after not seeing it for over 15 years. And, I couldn't stop laughing as I was driving. It speaks volumes when something you haven't seen in over 15 years still comes to mind and still makes you laugh. I miss the old Simpsons writers and animators.
When I was a kid, I thought the joke was that Homer was pretending to be scared by it and started laughing because it was actually really funny and couldn't keep himself from laughing. Now I realize the joke was supposed to be that the painting made him go insane. I think my old view of the joke was funnier.
Your old view of the joke was correct too. If you watch the whole scene they have an unrelated picture from a canceled sketch, so Homer walks by, thinks it's the segment, and tries to sell it as being scary. You think the joke is that the picture drove him insane?...I don't get it.
@@SuperMikeFender No, it's not. The show was all about making fun of how lowbrow and simple Homer is. Dogs playing poker is silly and therefore kind of funny, so to someone like Homer it's hysterical. The joke is also that Homer is breaking the mood by trying to help out and making it worse; he's trying to convey horror but is instead laughing, scared's opposite.
@@10INTM No. You're overthinking it. It's a surrealist painting. The concept of dogs playing poker is too much for his mind to handle, thus driving him to insanity, hence the maniacal laughter reminiscent of other episodes where Homer goes insane (and they are also Treehouse of Horror episodes.....). The Wikipedia article for this piece confirms what I'm saying. It's cool that you still found it funny though. :]
For years, I've wondered where some of the screaming and laughing audio heard in M.U.G.E.N. when Homer is either drunk or doing Iori Yagami's move seen while sober. Now I have found it.
I love that at the end of the laughter you can clearly hear Dan Castellanetas normal speaking voice. I think that mans a genius when it comes to voice acting, what this man can do with his voice is fucking inhuman!
Bart popping up at the end with a weird smile made me laugh more than it probably should.
I wanted the hear what he said
Me too
That is funny 😄
I agree, that added a laugh that wasn't there before XD
Ain’t I a stinker?

This scene alone justifies how amazing the hand drawn style was. You'd never see that overreacting, bouncy animation these days.
You could if more budget or passion was put into it.

Nah, I still see it. It's just rarer and usually only done by companies with a bigger budget. Disney animated shows have moments like this.
I thought the scene with Ms Botz has a best animation.
You'd love Studio Trigger in Japan! Kill la Kill is FULL of it because of its constant comedic tone
I love how Bart smiles at the end

I think he should be exasperated or grimacing baffled by Homer’s reaction to the painting.
I'm a bit surprised that hasn't become a MEME, Bart sliding into the frame smugging it up at the end of a video clip

Henry Wright how is this more intense than the time homer ate himself?
Good gravy, I miss the hand-drawn stuff from that period. Look how expressive that crazy laughter is! He's like a balloon you squeeze on one end.

David Silverman's signature style is all over this episode. He must have done most of the character layout drawings himself.
