Circle Hook Rig for Pike

  • A much better alternative to the 'Snap Tackle and Pop' Pike rig that is two treble hooks whacked into your dead-bait whilst fishing for Pike.
Barbaric and brutal things that really need to be banned! Not to the mention the ammunition these things give to the antis!
I've used circle hooks for years both here and overseas and for almost 5 years for Pike fishing here in the UK.
When it comes to circle hooks and Pike fishing I get a great hook up rate, and there's no risky business with trebles flying about everywhere either!
Plus, the Pike are easy to unhook too.
    A viable alternative indeed.
For further viewing i recommend checking out Tony Porter at Future Fishing and his much more indepth video on youtube 'Deadbait fishing for Pike, Perch, & Zander how to Parts 1 - 4'

I like ur style spike mike, got my biggest pike on a single circular hook. Barbless as well. 29 and a half pounds,on a sardine. It's definitely kinder on the fish.

Spot on. I keep trying to promote single hooks too. I just wish more would experiment on one of their other rods if they're not sure. The proof is out there that trebles are not necessary. Nice video. Tight lines.

thanks for that. as you say, i wish people would experiment... single hooks aren't sexy looking like all these massive flashy lures huh!

I only recently started fishing for pike, mainly in lures though and caught a few but I’ve already planned to try dead baiting. Anyway I’ve got plenty of experience as saltwater angler and to be honest the very first time I started looking at dead baiting for likes, and rigs in particular, I couldn’t believe that people still use trebles instead of circle hooks, especially knowing that 99% of the times you release the pike. Additionally circle hooks (but that’s true for all single hooks really) have a lot less chances of losing the fish once the hook is set even if you lock the drags and pull, and that’s also why in SW people always use single hooks (fish are stronger and put up much bigger fights, so a proper hook set is important in a prolonged fight) and on top of that many times the fish is kept and cooked (so it’s killed anyway).
So my rigs for dead baiting will definitely have a single circle hook!

      It's barbaric isn't it... trebles.
Pretty soon there will be no pike. A couple of the syndicate lakes have already banned trebles.
Anyway, thanks for clicking on the video and commenting.
      Mike

I've been using circle hooks for eight years now, for all my predator fishing, pike ,zander , perch, and wels catfish. I would never go back to trebles now for dead and live bait fishing. My hook of choice has always been Mustad 39951 pattern, although I've had success with perch using Eagle Claw L714 circles in sizes 6-12 with worm, maggot, and prawn baits.

I can't understand why folks still use trebles, snap tackles... whatever.
Pike are far more delicate and susceptible to damage... mouth damage especially than carp for instance.
Treble hooks? brutal things, ban them!

      Thanks!
It's a pukka rig, and I've caught so many fish using it.
I do of course loose the odd one now and then, but that's mainly due to striking as opposed to tightening up to a fish... A school boy error on my part!

I go back through the crimp twice and most of our waters don't allow wire under 40lb. But I use 28lb for up-traces

Until fisheries BAN the use of trebles....pike mortality will continue....wish more people would spread the word on the benefits of using circles...keep spreading the word

I shudder every time I watch a pike fishing video... treble hooks!
      Barbaric and unnecessary.

I am searching today after a deep hooked pike with a treble yesterday was almost impossible to remove the hook took far to long and the pike was in and out of the water 3 times over about 30mins the fish survived and by being careful I managed to clip the bends off the hooks and remove it all but if I was inexperienced and not a lifelong angler I am sure in this situation the hooks would have been left a passer by actually said to me clip the trace low and put it back I told him that would certainly kill the fish slowly I avoid dead bait fishing because of deep hooked fish and usually lure fish for them not only was this an ordeal for the fish my 11 year old son was distressed by the whole situation I’ll give deadbaiting one more go with this rig I think I’d rather not fish for them than deep hook another one keep the trebles for lures where in 35 years of fishing I’ve only ever had one deep hooked

I've not gut hooked a pike in years!
Soon as I get a pick up I hit the fish. 9 out of 10 are hooked in the outside of the scissors, I get the odd one inside the top jaw, which I usually remove with fingers.
I've not lost a fish In a couple of years, even using barbless circle hooks.
