Good review. I bought this bike but the Costco version (called Bronco). Side-by-side mine is a little larger than the Mongoose that my friend bought from Walmart. I changed the seat post (needed 1" longer - I'm 6'1", 215 lbs). The new one is aluminum - $13. I also changed the front gears as I wanted much lower for riding on the beach. That was $30, new, for a triple. The crank arms are now aluminum, not plastic. You definitely have to repack and adjust the bearings and brakes. I used "waterproof" grease. I also sprayed the inside of the frame and any other bare steel except the brake rotors with anti-corrosion spray due to the high salt water atmosphere. The bike has been doing great for one year on the beach so far. So, total of about $50 in upgrades (seat post, front crank, grease, anti-corrosion spray) and the thing does great. It weighs a ton but I ride on the flat so that doesn't matter.
Excellent review -- thanks for taking the time to let us know what this bike is like. You took the time and energy to put this information out there. You aren't criticizing a bike, you're explaining what's good and bad about cheapness, especially discussing parts of the bike that relate to quality and weight. There's one of these bikes for sale right now on Craigslist locally here and I was looking at the pros and cons of getting it for $140 or a bikes direct bicycle for $400+. Just got some snow up here in northern MN.
yeah, but your selling yourself short and ruining the whole experience by buying an el cheapo bike. I'm surprised this guy even bought it. You can buy a bike that's five times that much and still have to get different components to suit your style. That bike is a kids bike. And shouldn't be ridden by someone who has too much power, or rides it too hard.
Yeah I don’t think your review matches what should have been. Your doing a compare this with a more expensive bike but most people will come looking for a price friendly bike so for this price point you should just focus on the good and bad of this bike calling it cheap isn’t helping the review
for those that are casual riders, or just getting into biking, these are the way to go. Why spend a boatload of cash for a high end bike, if it turns out you don't like it, and the thing sits in storage gathering dust. people can always upgrade once they decide they want to get serious.
I bought one and swapped the saddle seat for an old school banana seat with sissy bar attachment and added 22 inch ape handlebars the hard part was getting new cables for the breaks and gears but once I got it done I got a mean street cruiser
+Don Clark yes. i have 2 for tooling around the beach and the streets. its a great bike. Just look at the walmart and amazon reviews, 4 out of 5 stars. That because the reviews are your average joe who just wants a fun bike, which this bike is. I advise making sure bearings are packed good and a few other checks when assembling. I think the review here did a nice review. But i think to many reviewers say negative things because they expect the quality and tightness of a bike over $1000.
It's a tough question...you could certainly do a few upgrades. My question would be, "on a bike where virtually every component requires upgrading, what few parts would you upgrade? " Where would you draw the line? The problem with upgrading is that EVERYTHING needs to be upgraded. Of course, if you were to upgrade everything, you'd have spent a lot of money...and you'd still have a cheap/heavy Mongoose frame. With that same money, you could have just bought a better/higher end bike to start with. When I try to identify a component that needs upgrading, I end up with a list that includes virtually every component on the bike.
Fair point. I can't argue that spending too much money on one of these bikes is like polishing a turd, but i've read that they have a few issues that are pretty easy/cheap to address, especially for folks with access to parts bins. 1. Gearing- the freewheel can be changed to one with an actual granny gear $10-15, plus you could slap on a used mtb triple and get a 34t in the front (maybe $20). 2. Weight- it's going to be a heavyweight without expensive parts, but new tubes could lower rotational mass for cheap and tires are a wear item that will eventually need replacing on any bike, so presumably you could cut significant weight there. 3. Seat- most people replace these for better butt fitment anyway. Assuming a rider was going to buy a different seat anyway, they could have a ridable fatty for a few cheap parts and some quality time in the garage.
A friend of mine bought one. I am going through the Hubs repack and adjust. The crank basically had no grease and it was binding. Trying to concoct a 2x front derailluer what means to uograde the crank.
I bought a Schwinn Biggity DLX. Very simaliar bike with simaliar components. Same shimano tourney drivetrain and cassette at the back. Seth's bike hacks mentioned wider handlebars and a giant head stem. This one did have those but the handlebars bent after one ride on the trails, I run bontreger big earl bars now and a giant headset. The pedals are wider and flat like bmx pedals. The disc brakes definitely needed adjustment but work good now. The plastic brake levers are brittle and fragile and since intend on winter riding. I swapped them for alloy levers. What could have been better?. An all aluminum frame, shorter head stem, thicker handlebars, more decent disc brakes and for sure. Not those cheap centre mounted kickstands... -.- It's a great bike once you set it up properly!
I bought one of these and put a few upgrades on it from my stack of other old nice bikes. Honestly I would rather walk than ride this bike. It now sits in my shed after giving it's parts back to my other bikes. I am now looking at buying a Framed fat bike.
and if you did but this, you can upgrade the the rear 7 speed gears fit 15$ with a shimano megaRange, which give a tall first gear perfect for hills and sand
Heh, well I bought a used Coyote Skid Row fattie a short while back, and, to be honest, and although some said that at it's alleged retail of 399 it's a little more up-market than a "cheap" fat bike, it has cheap components and a steel frame, so it weighs well over 45lbs and needs upgrades. But for half the original price, I'm not complaining too much.
The gmc yukon goes fit 360 and is all aluminum. I bought the mongoose malus and even after a couple of upgrades the yukon still would have been the better value
Just because its got a fat tire, doesn't mean you take it pro off road. Most of the reviews and recommendations for this bike describe it as a cruiser for overweight folks.
ive watched so many reviews about how heavy this bike is at nearly 50lbs. i mean...thats lighter than a 5 gal bucket of roof coating. lift some weights with your arms and legs. id say just get stronger and the bike wont feel as heavy. this guy reviewing it didnt complain much about weight...im just sayin.
Does a bike like that pops. I want to know cuz I have one that I stolen. Bcz every time I get a new bike they always break my locks and take it. So yes I want to know if it really pops easy
what u have to think about is the fact that most of the components that u whined about are massed produced in the millions for pacific. this means that it is illogical for pacific to spent 5 more cents to change the things u want changed. this bike is a steal as u can just upgrade certain parts and still pay way less that other fat bikes on the market
Cheap fat tire bike and can handle under 400lbs person that's because big tire that psi to max air the company says 250lbs but I bet that's company liability warranty
lol i will not pay 1000 dollars for a bike, i can buy a running snowmobile for less maybe even a shitty car or 4 wheeler 😂 so its either a cheap fat bike or no fatbike
junk bkes mongoose i had mongoose bike nothing but probalems with it i got a 2016 surly wednesday fat bike and it way better then mongoose spend $1500 for it

Great review no sugar coating, just realistic, and straight forward!
guess he needs a 3K bike to have a good time... smoke a doobie chill out
Agreed!!! It's a Walmart bike!!! What the F did he expect?!
I know! They are great bikes and he’s just trashing it.
hey rent a rickshaw ,
wonders if I can find one to haul my fat ass around through the woods and snow? lolz

awesome looking thing a Mongoose Fat Bike, got mine on order from Amazon, i cannot wait to receive it
dude lighten up, it's a $200 bike, everyone's not a pro like you

@@RawDogTV - Yeah right! Like i'm going to take the advice from someone who can't even afford a Sixpac
Criticizing a budget fat bike because it doesn't have light weight components? lol
guess he is Mister bike pro...
Sounds like this dude just likes to complain LOL
And my wife wonders why I spent a grand on my fat bike... I need to show her this vid.

to be honest if you upgrade the shifters and pack the bearings you should be fine.
Wayne Rhea better brake pads too this bike is awesome
Buys cheap bike, pisses & whines about it being a cheap bike.... Great video! LOL!
Yeah I have it and it rides fine. All the whiney fad boys always thinking they have to whine about everything to pretend to be more of an expert smh.

Thank you for your note about the size of the bike. Very helpful.
in my mind there are 2 categories of low quality sound. something i can not hear at all, and you, jus sayin
This is good for everyone other than pros like you
Geesh it's just a bike man.
Yes, but you also want good quality, right?
so is it worth $150 for someone who rides cement bike paths during summer????

Thank you for posting your review of the dolomite. I'm curious why you think this bike is not worth some basic/cheap upgrades.
It's a tough question...you could certainly do a few upgrades. My question would be, "on a bike where virtually every component requires upgrading, what few parts would you upgrade? " Where would you draw the line?

what is the rims made out of
+David Vick 8 pounds of steel ;-)
They're aluminum, but yes, there is a lot of it, so they are not light.

THIS SERVES ONLY FOR SNOW AND SAND? OR THIS CAN BE USED FOR ROAD?
SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT THESE ARE VERY HEAVY FOR CITIES flatlands?
You can definitely ride it on the pavement (road)...and yes, they are heavier than an average bike.
Thanks for the honest review.

What's the size of the mongoose dolomite crank arm ring like 170 somthing?
bikes like this are made for probably 70% of the population who have no idea.
would it be possible to make this bike into a single speed? does the rear hub have a typical freehub body?
and if you did but this, you can upgrade the the rear 7 speed gears fit 15$ with a shimano megaRange, which give a tall first gear perfect for hills and sand
can someone point me towards the crankset and bb for a dolomite fat tire bike, 100bb and get a double chain ring setup and the tools ill need?
so what fat bike is descent for 100 or so more?
roadstar499 sure, you can ride it on the road

Yes, compatible bolt on specs are matching. And better use a 17ah battery, anything less will be under matched. Good luck with the fab..

My only complaints about this bike are the brakes and front chainring which is too large and makes it hard to pedal
yeah same on mine. but the brakes calipers are good just the brake pads are bad. i got some new ones and i can go over the bars now
