    • @rheslip20
      @rheslip20  2 года назад +1

      I don't think you'll have clearance problems. You can eyeball the clearance with a piece of string between the large sprocket and where you plan to bolt the 22t chainring.

    When changing the freewheel did you have to change the derailer too? Also, the front chainspoket did you have to remove the plastic cover for it to work with clearance?

    • @rheslip20
      @rheslip20  3 года назад +1

      I changed the derailleur but it would have worked with the original one - both are for a 7 speed freewheel. I can't remember now why I removed the plastic cover - it may have been some kind of interference issue

      @@rheslip20 thank you I want to set mine up possibly the same. I did see where you bolted the from crank, the chain cover or chain shield would be in the way so I would remove mine as well. 🙂

    Great work on the upgrade videos. But is the Mongoose Malus, Dolamite and Hitch all the same bike and parts? What's up fellow bike enthusiasts. I'm new here and am just stopping by to say hello. As well as get some help with a recent used bike purchase (Mongoose Malus R5714A fat bike) issue. I'm looking to grease the headset, hubs, bottom bracket, etc. I know I'll need a freewheel/cassette puller, adjustable wrench, cone wrench, standard wrench(s), socket wrench(s), allen key(s), crank puller, pin spanner, etc. What I really want help with is figuring out which size tools I need? Or which bike repair tool kit(s)/set(s) are recommended for this bike model? I'm starting out with zero tools but only want to start my collection with these specific tools.
    P.S. I believe the bike to have all its original parts (as per the first and only owner).

    what type of crank? what size of puller if needed?

    • @rheslip20
      @rheslip20  7 лет назад

      I ran the bike with Shimano Biopace cranks and triple chainrings for a while but the cranks were very close to the frame so I went back to the stock crank and chainring with the added 22t. I can't remember the size of the crank puller but its very common and can be found in any bike shop.

    We have two re-cycling shops in Exeter UK, that sell second hand bikes and parts, one of them is actually a registered charity, so I try to use them most often.
    But shouldn't you really drill a hole lot more holes, to make the bike a whole lot lighter? 😉😉😉

  • @shaggyfromfl
    @shaggyfromfl 6 лет назад

    i want to do the add-on sprocket, but did you need any special tools like a drill press.

    • @rheslip20
      @rheslip20  6 лет назад

      I can't recall how I drilled the holes now but I think I did it with an electric drill. Mark the hole locations carefully using the new chain ring, center punch them, drill pilot holes first and then drill the 5/16" bolt holes. Not hard but they have to be accurately located or the chain ring will be off center. The 22 tooth with the Megarange freewheel made a big difference for off road riding.

      I think its 100mm. Bearings are unsealed garden variety available in any bike shop. I sold the Dolomite a couple of months ago and bought a Surly Pugsley Ops - fantastic fat bike. The Dolomite is a great starter fat bike tho and I have no regrets about buying it.

      Its my very first ever owned bike and I just scrap it down to nothing. I chant to change out the parts and upgrade to some thing a bit PHATTER. I need to help in know what parts I can buy and set it up then later have the bike shop scan it, any Idea?

    • @rheslip20
      @rheslip20  7 лет назад +1

      If you search the web there are some good discussions on upgrading the Dolomite bearings, wheels etc. Most experienced bike owners say that no matter how much you upgrade it it will still be a cheap, heavy bike. That's why I sold it after 6 months and bought a "real" fat bike. I found a used Pugsley in excellent condition for $950 Cdn and I'm extremely pleased with it. The quality of the bearings, drive train, wheels, tires, frame etc is much better and its almost 10 lbs lighter. The Dolomite is a great starter bike, just don't spend too much on it!

      rheslip20 ypu burst .my bubble because I wanted to reinvent the for the mangoose dolomite. Its my first time customising a bike and I have ver little knowledge of parts and size compatibility. How do I get this to be the best dolomite every??? i dont mind the weight as im looking for a MTB system to get this buddy allover. it dedicating this project to my beloved Aunty. help.

    • @rheslip20
      @rheslip20  7 лет назад

      Depends what you want from the bike. If you just want it to look cool then yeah go crazy. I wanted a reliable off road bike for bike packing and the Dolo is never going to be that. Start by making the mods I did - replace the crappy parts it ships with with better stuff. You will find it is very compatible with common bike parts - chains, bearings, derailleurs, disks, brakes etc. The only non-standard parts I found were the rims, long axles, bottom bracket and the odd size seat post and you don't need to change those parts anyway. Dress it up, drill the rims, repaint it and it will look fantastic. If you search you will find some very nice looking Dolomites on the web.

    • @wordreet
      @wordreet 5 лет назад

      New tires are a regular service item and swapped tires could be sold off if necessary or kept as spares. Cheap pedals aren't expensive, if you understand the word. Recycled parts are cheap too and re-using parts from an old bike is free. So how is this "expensive"? Hmm, must be his per-hour labour charges. How much do you charge per hour Mr rheslip? You should do your own work for free.
