  • The Mongoose Malus is a Fat tire bike available through Amazon. It is similar to the Mongoose Dolomite found at Walmart, but has a silver frame that is slightly largervthan the Dolomote. The bicycle features 26 x 4.0 fat tires and a Shimano Tourney powered 1x7 drivetrain.
    This is my first look at a fat bike, and I have had lots of fun with the Mongoose Malus. The bike currently costs $319.99 on Amazon. I don't consider big box fat bikes to be upgrade platforms as the parts cost too much, but this bike will receive a couple of small upgrades: a trigger shifter in place of the twist shifter, and a Shimano 7-speed Mega Range freewheel that will hopefully make the bike more useable on hilly terrain and/or mountain bike trails.
    Check out the Malus on Amazon:

    Looks like it could be a lot of fun, but non-replacable hangers always hurt me inside.

    • @EckmanJones
      @EckmanJones 5 лет назад +6

      Derailleur hangers are supposed to be replaceable, so you replace them instead of your rear derailleur. Then again those things are stupid expensive.

    • @truantray

      The frame is steel. If you bend the hangar, you can just bend it back.

      @@EckmanJones not on a steel frame.

    • @EckmanJones
      @EckmanJones 5 лет назад

      @@truantray I know my partner has been talking a lot of about steel frames lately. She's looking at the Trek 520, which has a steel frame and is a hell of a bike. But as you work your way up in price you consistently get better parts. I'd rather have that hanger than have it be attached to the frame directly. Especially if you look at higher end ones such as SRAM and BOX. Which I really want to upgrade to. Those are pricey though. I should add that our ebike has a hanger as well and it uses cheaper bike parts, where the cost comes from the motor and battery pack. So it seems like a ill advised place to cut costs.

    • @1973honza
      @1973honza 5 лет назад

      @Chris Eckersen Your ebike probably isn't steel right? Dural frames need hangers, because they're fragile, hanger on a steel frame wouldn't even break because how soft steel is. Also keep in mind derailleur is the least important part of the bike. All that matter is number of speeds. The high end expensive ones are just lighter, but functionally they are all the same (if we are no talking the budget ones). I would rather upgrade shift and brake levers.

    Hi Kevin, I've had my Malus 4 over a year now on 3/3/19, and I can deduce 2 it being a great purchase 4 me, I bought mine @ Kohl's. com 4 2-hundo on sale, my local K-mart has it 4 a Whopping $330 bucks!! I have a lot of after market parts on it now, and really enjoy the 4×4 mentality it gives me, I'm a Bigboy @ 5'10" and 296lb and Yes I'm a 50yr Oldman that has done a lot of W8 training in life, 58" Chest Huge shoulders & arms, now I'm doing 20 miles a day every day on my bike, because I love 2 ride on the scenic West coast and go on the beach with my Malus!! Thank you for this review. I’d seen several other cheap fat bike reviews that seem like complaint lists of experts who are used to $3000 bikes. I haven’t ridden in several years and I want the exercise benefits of simply riding a bike that I can beat on, and this seems to fit the bill. I don’t plan on anything long distance, just stuff within a few blocks, and that includes several terrain types. My yard is challenging to mow, and I can see myself having a ball with this bike just “monster trucking” around the yard/local area in it. Again, thank you!

    I just picked up a Mongoose "Beast" Single speed 56 pound fat bike, and my cruising speed was just under 11mph overall. Top speed dogged out was 18mph with a slight decline in the road. I did what was suppose to be a 32 mile ride but ended up 46 1/2 miles, and I took that because I wanted a workout... First time I ever was in physical pain from a bike ride, my upper legs and knees were cramping and burning like mad OMG! Made it back to the van, and I gained so much credit from my bike riding friends for being crazy enough to do that on this bike.
    So this Malus looks like a dream compared to that used $100 marketplace special I picked up. But mine is without a doubt a workout machine!

    These fat bikes are for sure fun. And the double walled rims are practically indestructible (especially running higher psi) ive been using broken sidewalks, kurbs, roots, snd other things as ramps and im impressed by the height i can get. Had this since 2009 and the rims are still perfectly straight. No turning needed

    Kev, I commute daily on my fat ebike. It came with a similar drivetrain but hydraulic disc brakes. I have upgraded to the 14-34 freewheel for easier startups and extended hill climbs (plenty of them here in Costa Rica) and am ordering some proper trigger shifters to replace the awkward over the bar thumb/button shifter. It does provide a ton of confidence on our awful paved roads and 500watts of assist gets me up any hill. Try one, but be warned it's an addictive combo of fun and comfort. Also ditto on 15psi. I run about 14 in the front and 17 in the back.

    I have a dolomite that I just put wake bars and a gt stem on I had laying around along with a sram x-4 trigger shifter and derailleur and a mega range cassette also changed out the brake levers for aluminum ones. The stock plastic ones flex and make the brakes feel squishy and inadequate. It’s a whole new beast now.

    Great review. I ride a Mongoose Hitch, which is very similar. I'm amazed to see how much the price has gone up on these. When I bought my Hitch a few years ago, it was about $240 (brand new). I made two upgrades right away that made a big improvement in performance. First was all aluminum brake levers. The cable operated disc brakes are 'OK' on the bike, but the half plastic levers allowed too much flex when braking hard, greatly reducing the braking power of the discs. Second was getting a decent set of all aluminum 'bmx style' pedals. Again, the plastic pedals just flex too much. All in all, it's a fun bike to ride and gets questions and comments on every ride. At this point, I'm into mind for under $300.

    Academy used to sell these for $200. At that price they were a good deal. They also came with lighter wheels that had weight relief cuts that made a big difference. The biggest weakness of these bikes is the axles for the hubs. They are known to bend pretty easily. Also the bottom bracket is a non standard size.

Thank Gawd it only goes around 11mph cruising at a decent pedal rate, or ya gonna die on it lol. On a side note I haven't laid so much rubber laid down on the road since I was a kid trying to leave black streaks on the pavement!

    I scored mine for $100 off Craigslist. I put on shimano hydraulic brakes, raliegh stem and 760 bars, a specialized seat, sram X3 8 speed shifter and deraileur, and a 76bcd crank set. All that was laying around. I bought a 180 front rotors, a 13-34t 8 speed freewheel, and a 26t front ring. I greased all the bearings after cleaning out the oil they build it with. With all that, this thing is a serious goat for what it is. It gets around as well as my diamondback 1x11 hardtail.

      I have a few bikes for different things. I have a Mongoose Dolomite which is basically the same bike as the Malus. Paid 198.00 about 2 years ago. Equipped it with racks and small fenders and use it as a flatland beach cruiser. Load up my beach gear and check out all the pooty tang as I ride. The 26” tires are the same height in inches as my 29er because of the tall sidewall. Mine is black with blue wheels, few cheap lights, fluorescent lightning bolt graphics and I’m knocking it out of the park for 2 bills...

      I have a Giant Rapid 3 a very fast road bike that none of my casual bike riding friends can even touch at speeds. Also have Giant Boulder mountain bike the low end mountain bike from Giant I also love... Then I just picked up a Mongoose Beast single speed fat tire for $100 off Facebook Marketplace... I wanted something to make me sweat and really give me a difficult workout, I wasn't expecting this 56 pounds steel beast to be so much fun to ride! Just like the review on this nicer Mongoose I was rolling over anything and everything just for the fun of doing it. Cheap bikes can be as much fun as a good bike, just have to set your mindset into what the bike is for.

Swapped out to a Mega Range cluster gear and trigger shifter first thing. The brakes work much, much better after they are broken in. Went to a 3 speed crank 22, 32, 42 tooth gears on the front. The paint seems to be soft and scratches easy. The bike goes great in packed snow trails. All in all it's a fun bike and I get lots of comments and curious people asking about itu

I couldn’t find a bottom bracket to fit because of the non standard size. I did however change the cranks to Shimano touring cranks. The bottom bracket is a square taper design. The rear cassette is 11 by 42 and the chainring is a 34 tooth Absolute Black oval. I got the idea from the LoveMTB channel on U-Tube. I have photos if requested.

    Great Video! I have a very similar specced fatbike here in the UK, badged as a Coyote Skid Row. I have upgraded most things, but by far the most effective was swapping the tyres, it turned out that the Stock tyres weighed in at a huge 3.1kg each(!!) I replaced them with some that weighed around 1.1kg each, so ended up shedding about 4kg (nearly 9 pounds!) Of rotating mass In one upgrade! After doing just that it rode like a totally different bike.

    I've converted a Mongoose Malus into a dual wheel electric bike. I chose the Malus because of the solid construction and the fat tires. It's heavy to begin with and adding the weight of the hub motors at 20 pounds each, the batteries at 11.2 pounds each, 20 amp hour times two..... but a body in motion stays in motion. This thing can climb trees. I haven't found a hill I have ever come up against that I can't climb. I'm looking to add a front suspension fork. Will probably order it in a week or so. Having dual hub motors makes this thing amazing. Each motor is helping the other and I can get 40mph max for now but I'm changing over to sine wave controllers and expect an increase in speed as well as increased torque and quieter motor performance. I added hydraulic calipers to the bike for a better stopping power because I needed to use the wire cables for the motor cut off on the controllers and the new controllers will have EBS Braking that will allow the motors to assist the brakes so I don't have to buy break pads as often.. I haven't installed them yet so we'll see. Sometimes less is more. The Mongoose Dolomite sells for less and would be another option for an e-bike build.

    I have one of these mongoose fat bike variations (dolomite) I can tell you that in the future you want to upgrade a lot of stuff. I could that the handlebars were to narrow and that the twist style shifters were really crappy. So I changed to thicker bars, a push button shifter and a shorter 31.8 stem. The mechanical disk brakes aren't bad when tuned really well, but the rotors can bend easily. Not to mention how heavy it is, but you can fix that by just getting some new tires. The only parts that are really solid are the rims and hubs. They haven't bent once and I use this bike as my main trail bike. The gearing was another thing I didn't like, so I suggest getting a smaller sprocket on front and getting a "megarange" shimano freewheel on the back. This really helps for climbing. I really want to see some more videos featuring this bike, I'm excited to see what you'll do!

      And one more thing, you overpaid for this. Most of the variations have the exact and I mean EXACT same parts. I recognize a lot of dolomite parts, and the mongoose dolomite was only 200.00.

    Kev, it's really great to see you review a fat bike. I wondered if you would ever get there since they are very common at the big box stores.
    I love mine, but it's hardly a budget bike. Surly bikes are never in that range, in any form. The tires/wheels and the rest of the components are considerably lighter, so even with a steel frame it is under the weight of this one. I ride mine on the street a lot, even commuting on it occasionally.

    I found an 8 speed freewheel at 13-34 on Ebay for about the same price as the megarange 7 speed. 8 speed freewheels exist, and Big Box Bikes haven't cottoned on to them yet.
    The megarange works really well, usually the 7 speed with a megarange is 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 34 for most brands. The 8 speed, however, throws in a 28 tooth sprocket in between the 24 and 34 sprockets allowing for a much cleaner and smoother transition in gear ranges. Of course, doing so would mean a new chain, cable and shifter, but you were going to replace those anyway.
    On a side note, Sunrace makes hanger adapters for bikes that use the integrated hanger setup on their dropouts. The Mongoose looks like the hanger is a part of the frame which is bizzare.

    I got the Argus in 2020, looks very similar to the Argus. Do you have any links for your recommended upgrades?
    Also, would you recommend anything for the pedals/crank arms?
    I have not owned a bike in almost 30 years, and when I had the opportunity of getting a fat bike I did and MAN DO I LOVE IT! So much fun. With that said, I am a bit heavier on the pedals and the plastic pedals it came with broke off because they looked pretty cheap. Crank arm is no good anymore so wanted to see if you had any recommendation on a crank arm/pedals?

    I bought this fatbike a few years ago. Get back on Amazon and purchase a bigger toothed rear cassette, trigger shifter, grips, and hydraulic brakes and this will be a much more fun bike to ride.
    All of it can be done for well under $100, and is well worth it. Along with some new bars and stem.

    If you replace the ridiculously heavy stock tubes with normal 26" tubes, it drops like .5-1.0 pounds per tire, and works wonderfully. I did this on my pugsley years ago with no issues. Tubeless is even better, and has more pronounced effects on fat tires than even normal bikes.
    The other thing is replace those tires with a quality fatbike tire, and you will also drop about a pound per tire, and the more supple tire will roll much much easier. It should feel like a normal bike, or close to it after that.

    I have a same bike as yours in Canada, its a Schwinn Biggity DLX, same colour, same frame, different brand but under one company which is Pacific Cycle. Upgrades done on my Schwinn fatbike are Shimano Trigger shifter replacing the twist shifter, Raceface handlebar and MEC stem and Avid disc brake calipers replacing the generic brake calipers.

    One upgrade you could do are the brakes with the replacement bolt on Hydraulic cable assist calipers .
    I replaced my mechanical calipers with the cable assist ones and they bolt right on using the existing cables with the benefit of hydraulics
    You can get a set for about 50 bucks almost anywhere and even on amazon or ebay

    I rode a Mongoose hard tail 27.5 plus bike (Hondo) on real mountain bike single track for the better part of almost 3 years. The single track was fast and pretty technical. The Hondo weighed in at approximately 48lbs, an extremely heavy bike. I used the bike heavily in the constant rainy, muddy conditions to save my more expensive bike for the nice weather. I upgraded the handle bar to a riser and installed the Mega gear freewheel for the steep hill climbs. The biggest problems that I faced were rear axle bolt breakage and I had to grease the front fork because the seals were worthless as usual in big box bikes. However, once greased it worked fine. The greatest issue that I had occurred due to the fact that the chain runs so close to the 2.8 inch thick 27.5 tires in the low gears. Well, the hole point of this "thicker tire bike" was to be able to ride these technical trails in serious muddy, light snow and generally nasty conditions. However, the rear derailer would gunk up so quickly in these conditions that it would eventually lock up the chain and send the derailer into the spokes. I upgraded to a Tourney and used lots of lube in the hopes that I could correct this issue, but I never could. So, I learned that this is a design issue with that particular Mongoose that I just didn't forsee when I purchased it to experiment with. In the two lowest gears that chain was almost always on the tire which cause 85% of my issues with the bike. I never had a problem with the wheels and tires. The bike was a "led sled" but was great fun and useful except for these few issues. Dry weather, she was good as gold. Hope this is useful to someone out there!

    I had one of those for riding on some sandy Corp land, then the land flooded for the last 3 years and I sold it. You can make the front wheel quick release by swapping in a standard MTB 135mm QR axle. I dropped mine to 37 pounds by replacing the cheap steel parts with parts bind aluminum bits and upgrading to decent tires and tubes. The fork flexed like a wet noodle whenever I stopped in a hurry.

    I have a fat bike similar to this One but it’s a NorthRock. I paid 350$ can and I got à 1x7 with the same derailleur and shifter as my Trek Marlin 6, cable disk breaks, 27x4 kenda tires rigid fork, good grips, a good stem and handle bars (not like the one you have in this video that looks cheep and that you get on walmart bikes) and metal pedals. Everything on this bike is standard. I upgraded the front chainring, the handlebars and the pedals.

    I don't have a Mongoose fat bike, but I do have the Terrex 27.5+, which I've upgraded several of the components on. The Terrex wheels are similar to the Malus, in that the spokes run around the outside of the rim, which can create problems with dialing in the derailleur, especially if you decide to upgrade it, because the derailleur rubs on the spokes. Also, being a 7 speed, there are few derailleurs to choose from. Other than that, I've been pleased with my Mongoose.

    • @solsonscherman2029

      Kevin you should be able to put on a bunch of different derraileurs. I just fitted my 7 speed with an older xtr, but a more reasonable option might be an Alivio ("9 speed"). Just be sure to set the high-low limits and then dial in the shifting

    Rented two bikes at the beach since I'm new to it, one road and one fat. I went way farther on the fat bike than the road bike than I realized because I just enjoyed the plush feel and bounciness of it so much. It was just relaxing to cruise. I'm not a speed junkie, so I'm considering a cheap fat bike or at least a plus bike as a 5 to 10 mile commuter on pavement.

We talked with a cyclist riding a fat bike, it was a nice looking bike he had really put a lot of love into it. But where I live it's not exactly ideal to have a 1x7 drive train as there is a ton of hills around here. I wonder how they would do climbing some of the nasty trails at Colorado Bend State Park.

    A fair number of fat bikes come with grip shift as the presumption is that you will snow bike in the winter. Grip shift is easier to use with big winter mitts on.
