Gary Oldman now has accepted two major awards on behalf of two late icons. Heath Ledger and David Bowie. Wow!
both of them were legends...one musician and one in acting. rip to both of them...
+Jan Terry OMG WOW , really!??!?!?!?!?!? .....lol your name is Jan Terry.
7FatBears Umm, yeah. Why? Is my name familiar to you?
Gary Oldman is a legend himself
"David faced his illness with dignity, grace and his customary humour. Even in dire circumstances. When he wrote to tell me he had cancer, he said 'the good news is I have my cheekbones back'. David, you were mortal but your potential was superhuman and your remarkable music is living on. We love you and we thank you."
I Cried My Eyes Out.That was a tribute. So touching.Full of emotions and true love for David.
Miss you terribly Duke..
And I thought it was only me that cried that night 😢
I'm crying here... Thanks Annie, thanks Gary for the beautiful words... Miss you David...
sob... Gary Oldman is a class act though
exactly.
seriously! he's up there on my all time favorite lists.
(and I got an older man crush on him too, can't help it! )
Yes, I'd take him over Johnny Depp any day
David didn't die. He's simply moved on to his next incarnation of which we won't see until we too have crossed the stardust and join him. It will be amazing.
I like your perspective..
dead then?
"crossed the stardust" ? what a load of shite......yup, im an angry youtube commenter tonight...much love, especially to bowie but mostly to everybody...free the animals
I like that idea, Jane. well said.
+Jane Barnes
Actually, we are composed of stardust. It is already amazing.
Dr.V
David Bowie.. Often copied but never equalled ♡
RIP icon ♡
+JazzMJFAN ICON and ICONOCLAST, pretty cool.
dear Lady Gaga.........this is how you give a tribute.....
+chip graff dear chip graff, gaga's tribute was amazing, so shut the fuck up.
BoomyFizzle and proud
+Lily Araujo Aw Bullcrap. Did his son actually say it was 'pathetic' in his tweet ? Get Ur facts right. I think Lady Gaga heart was in the right place but the medley was poorly conceived.
+Des Slye Gaga's tribute was amazing as a standalone, strictly about-Gaga performance. It wasn't amazing as a tribute. Her pageantry kept the focus on her, not on David and his music, and she turned the man's death into a profit-mongering advertisement for Intel. It was very disappointing. I'm a little monster, I love her work, but I've been a bowiemian a lot longer and her tribute was not a tribute to David, it was a tribute to Gaga using David's music. With as much talent as she has, she could have conceived better than the commercialisation of David Bowie's death. The BRITs tribute focused entirely on David, didn't make a frivolous show of things, AND it included people who were actually close to David as well as allowed HIS BAND to play. Gaga's performance was entirely for and about her, not about David. So as amazing as Gaga is, her tribute to David Bowie was not amazing - it was a noxious mess.
+Des Slye she's a talentless walking abortion ...
David Bowie was a huge fan of Annie Lennox too ; he thought she was a massive talent - and it is fitting that she introduced this award . Watch their performance of Under Pressure . Probably the only time the great man was upstaged by another performer .
+ThefightingCelt Have to agree their preformance together should go down in rock history was amazing.
ThefightingCelt, Annie is to me arguably the finest woman singing of my generation, and from what I see she also does a ton of truly charitable work and effective activism. She was perfect.
It is 11/17/19..David Bowie! Thank You for sharing your amazing Talent with the whole World! To Iman & children Thank you too!
I'm crying big tears. What a beautiful tribute. These are the words that resonate and are so poignantly helpful. Thank you Annie and Gary. He was the embodiment of fun and the expression of humor, and intellect. Enjoy the Cosmos, David. "A quintessential visionary pushing the limits of a shape shifting persona. The ultimate iconoclast, gracious and dangerous and legendary. The legacy of his extraordinary sound and vision will be loved and revered for as long as the Earth still spins." Annie Lennox. The Brit Icon award. Feb 24, 2016.
Amen amen BRAVO!!!
+Lady BlackStardust Well said. Annie put it perfectly, really. I'm also crying watching this.
It was kind and comforting for Gary Oldman to share about Bowie's life with cancer. His words about Bowie were very moving. We lost an icon. I've been watching his music videos and interviews to enjoy his songs and great wit and humor.
Well said. There have been many well intended tributes since we lost the great man but at last a fitting epitaph from those who were close to him followed by a performance which was worthy of his legacy
+Lady BlackStardust Very well said. It would have been great if Annie sang the medley rather than Lady gaga, but only when she is over her grieving. A true living legend Miss Lennox XXX.
Thank You Annie and Gary for such beautiful and classy tributes. No need for crassness , fake crocodile tears and circus like BS in the Grammy awards.
Simply having Gary Oldman as your mate speaks volumes about Bowie.
the most perfect words about the great man, well done to Annie & Gary
Amazing, this is the right tribute to fit the unique legend David Bowie, respectful ,full of honest emotions ,
Legends never die .
David Bowie is the Leonardo Da Vinci of music, a true Artist and its devastating to know we'll never get another Artist like him...RIP STARMAN.
This was wonderful. Gary & Annie really captured David in the speeches. My only regret was ever meeting David in real life. He's everything to me & always will be.
As an American, I feel that the Grammy's should be ashamed! I understand that Bowie was British but the guy was a legend and his music was transcendent, plus he lived in the states for half of his life. I never watch these shit awards shows but as a Bowie nut, I figured I would watch the Grammy's this year for the first time hoping they would honor this man and they did not. Congrats to the Brit awards! Well done.
+erick medeiros I'm not American but agree with you.
For those who say that the Grammys did not pay tribute to the great David Bowie then what was Lady Gaga's performance?
+Emily Stein exactly that: a Lady Gaga performance...
+Emily Stein it wasn't enough! Bowie is one of the most important musical figures in the history of music.
+erick medeiros No worries, the entire WORLD was disgusted and the Grammys were SHAMED for the disrespectful corporate advert The David Bowie tribute turned into. NO ONE in the music industry, his colleagues, the global artistic community, credible media, his friends and family, the massive global Bowie fanbase NO ONE endorsed it. EVERYONE has now expressed deep gratitude for the Brits PROPER and distinguished tribute to his CULTURAL LEGACY. Yes, they could have done even better, but THAT is the nature of corporate driven awards shows, it's all about profit margins and the core commercial demographic$$$
David will be remembered by 'EVVVERRRRYYYYYOOONNNEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!"
Neon Emotion ahahaha thank you for commenting this
Bittersweet tears... Thank you, Gary Oldman, for sharing the beauty of your experiences with David Bowie.
Bowie is British icon and LEGEND!
+Ash Almond Bowie is a world icon and legend who happened to born in England. He will always be alive in our hearts
Absolutely wonderful speeches by both Annie & Gary. Love the respect some of the attendees, such as Coldplay (who can be seen standing out of respect as Gary started speaking) gave.
The Grammy's had the better singing voice, the The Brit Awards had a better performance overall.
Damn, now I'm crying again! So well put and a beautiful tribute.
David Bowie's own family, friends, colleagues, industry peers, musical collaborators, the credible media, and his massive international fanbase have overwhelmingly endorsed the Brit Awards Tribute to his Legacy; for being AUTHENTIC and significant to his career. REAL people, who knew and worked with him, that HE RESPECTED and loved. Unlike the Grammy fiasco, that was universally panned by all of the above groups and individuals. The Grammy tribute was a disgraceful and disrespectful corporate endorsement that didn't even qualify as an artistic tribute. It was a disgraceful attempt to cash in on ratings and corporate advert(Intel) using the global media frenzy over his death. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time....
Amen!
Gary Oldman: Sweetest man on EARTH hands down
He's up in space now...we miss you David❤
she was right about when she said people are still trying to process him being gone I still can't believe it its just sooo crazy RIP Bowie
+Danielle Sida same here
I love Gary Oldman!!! Awesome actor!
+missisfreddiemercury One of the best!
This was beautiful. It begs the question, however.........how had David Freaking Bowie not ALREADY received the Brit Icon award? I suppose seeing awards won by One Direction and Justin Bieber helps answer that question.
To be fair......Bowie's album wasn't eligible for best album of 2015 because it was released in January of 2016. Wait til next year!
+Shawn McLaughlin One Direction, Justin Bieber and Taylor swift are shit......... only plastic artist
David Bowie Real Artist!!! He's a Icon
Taylor Swift, One Direction and Bieber pure shit
+Lily Araujo
Too be fair ★ only just came out where as 1989 made the cut off date. Look to next years awards for a ★ nod, something I'm sure Kanye West will complain about.
+Shawn McLaughlin how can a sexual deviant and predator who had sex with underage girls ever be considered an icon. It is indeed a testament to the perverse, immoral, celebrity-obsessed times in which we live. Though if he wasn't a celebrity, he'd likely be shunned for life for what he did.
ChristianMission
How old was Mary when God 'Made' her pregnant?
This is how you pay tribute to David Bowie, no artist of today will ever match what David gave and represented. He's a one off, Annie and Gary Oldman done David proud. We miss you David, just not fair he's gone
I'm in tears. Now this, was a proper way to honor David Bowie. I was so disappointed with the GRAMMY's tribute but the BRIT's did him proud! Thank you...
I'm sorry, but I don't speak english very well, I understood everything they said but I didn't understand what happened when the guy with the autograph walked away. Could you please write it down? thanks:)
David Bowie made be dead, but he'll never be forgotten.
If I were to choose someone to speak on David's behalf I would have chosen Gary Oldman. Both David and Gary are brilliant muses in my life and the lives of many. (I didn't know they were good friends...but that makes so much sense). A superb execution of a real Tribute! 😢
So grateful to hear and see this tribute to David Bowie...
8:29 "Just a mortal with potential of a superman"
your potential was super human.
🤔
+Sindollx666x I will reference "Quicksand" any chance I get
+rockonhard77 ah, got ya, sorry I thought you were misquoting sorry for the assumption; )
"I'm living on" (your remarkable music is living on)
I am in awe by how beautiful and spot on Annie's description is, from the point of view of a fan. And how open Gary's speech was. This was wonderful to watch.
When Gary Oldman mentioned the cheekbones ....I did cry a little bit.
Everyone, Bowie is in a much better place in the stars now :) recently, near Mars, during or after Bowie's death, a constellation of a certain iconic lightning bolt was found.
Don't be an idiot m8
⭐️⚡️
LOL
+TheMasterchiefan I would like to call this head like rock I found on Mars in a special place I call Quadrata martis "Ziggy rock" in honour of Bowies affiliation with the cultural mystic of Mars.gigapan.com/gigapans/148682
+garyoptica Click on the first snapshot if you visit the link above to find Ziggy rock
I normally think tributes are either self promoting (like Gaga) or trite, but this was very moving and heartfelt indeed. Thank you.
so beautiful speech
Mr. Gary Oldman you read my mind and spoke from the heart... incredible
:')
these two dear friends of David brought tears to my eyes as they spoke of their regard for him. I did not know him personally but felt he knew ME. I am beyond sad. this tribute was beautiful and heartfelt.
Thank you, Annie, for sharing your real emotions. That's exactly what I feel.
A moving tribute to the late "David Bowie" by Gary and Annie two of the worlds best icons from the world of film & music love to you both you did David and his family proud.❤👍
New respect for Lennox and Oldman after this. Spot on ~ love the reference to Quicksand at the end too xx
Beautiful tribute to an incomparable icon!
Being of the 70's generation and a fan of David Bowie, I think the Brit Awards chose two of the BEST of OUR (MY) generation to salute David Bowie, Annie Lennox and Gary Oldman! VERY TOUCHING! PERFECT!
Nowww...This is how it should be done. Ms. Lennox represents just the kind of artistic gravitas appropriate for sharing the true cultural impact of Bowie's genius.
I thought I cried all my tears for Bowie...
Now I cry again.
Thank You Annie, thank You Gary, and thank You David Bowie...
That thing about the cheek bones was funny and depressing at the same time. David Bowie did what few can, accept fate and bring light to dark situations.
this is just too powerful but none other tribute would be worth him
Gary nearly losing it towards the end there... must have been such a hard thing to do.
Thank you for posting this...I will miss you dearly David.
tears, and a heavy heart, we miss you David
"I've got my cheekbones back"... Omg I can't help crying :(
Not a circus à la lady gaga but love.
this puts Lady Gaga to shame
God! Just when I thought my crash on Gary Oldman coulnd´t get any bigger... I´m dying here!!
I still can't believe it he's gone. I remember when I was 12 or 13 years I used to pretend that I would meet him and marry him. I still love him for his talent, his music and of course those cheekbones.
Wow. Just seen this for the first time and oh man, you can really feel Annie and Gary's emotions so strongly.
Not to mention that hug that I'm sure they both needed.
I can feel them both battlin to get through their speeches smoothly and resepctfully without getting too upset or losing momentum. And given the length and passion of what they both had to memorise and then later deliver in front of such a huge crowd - and especially as this was so soon after David's death: it;s blody impressive.
Congrats to them both and the awards could hardly have chosen a more perfect pair to present this.
"The legacy of his extraordinary sound and vision will be loved and revered for as long as the earth still spins." So true.
I love love love bowie, I’m also very impressed with mr oldman!
Thanks for the ride David it was awesome!!!
Someone's cutting onions around here...
Bowie meant so much to me as an artist-from a young age, his music captivated me. I didn't always like or agree with his musical direction (it's a matter of taste, obviously), but he was an incredible chameleon, able to change and adapt with the times, and provide some truly unforgettable sound, and vision.
RIP Starman. Thank you.
La música es atemporal y afortunadamente nos seguirá recordando y manteniendo cerca a David Bowie 🙏🎸🎶🎤👏
This is exactly what the public needed to hear, I only wish Annie would've performed so she could erase that shitty drunk Elvis impersonation Gaga forced down our throats during the Grammys, RIP BOWIE ★
I always thought Gary and David looked so alike they could be brothers.
That was indeed, BEAUTIFUL.
c'etait notre Mozart de notre siecle , unique et formidable ; une vrai légende qyi m'a suyivi toute ma vie et durant mes etudes ; j'ai 58 ans et david ete dans ma vie une inspiration; hij ga hem verschriklijk missen; listen to his music ;;;;;;;;;great
Oh Annie. I've always loved you. You said so much in so few words. I'll never forget the two of you performing _Under_ _Pressure_ in the tribute concert. It was a highlight to me in a career full of incredible performances for both of you.
Annie Lennox performed "Under Pressure" with David Bowie in the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. Annie wore a black/silver dress to symbolise death/Aids, David Wore a green suit to symbolise life. In the end of the song annie hugged him. Showing when freddie died. I would love that annie would perform a version of that for bowie
That really was a tribute, not the Lady Gaga one, ot was very good how Gary and Annie gave it, David is an icon and a legend, and in the real music, his legacy would never die, I'm so proud to this tribute
+Omar Garibay check out steven wilsons tribute at hammersmith appollo on yt ,good
David Bowie's soul must have been in such a happy place when he saw this and no one could have paid such a humble tribute to David bowie as him..
Gary is right, he had a potential of superhuman, for he was like not just a human, he was otherworldly, Gracious and dangerous, diverse just everything about him. ❤️
This woman is surely one of the most irritating people on the planet. Nauseating, sanctimonious, pretentious. The irony of awarding an Icon honour to Bowie is lost on some people. Bowie was an iconoclast and would surely have considered this precious, self-reverential drivel worthy of ridicule. Oldman nearly saves the show.
Greatest singer/songwriter of all time. Bar none.
Wonderful Tribute to a Legend !
So much better than Gaga's tribute
To all of the lexicographers out there in the world: include Gary Oldman and Annie Lennox in your latest dictionaries as examples of class. To anyone at NASA, ESA, and JPL: be the first to discover a new heavenly body in the universe and name it after David Bowie. To any mathematicians out there: take the five symbols under the black star under his latest album and see how many combinations can you make by placing each symbol around the large star. It almost seems like a Divine Proportion or Golden Segment. To everyone else touched by his music: find comfort in his songs and may they lift your spirit whenever you feel alone.
Heartbreaking and fitting tribute
My heart hurts
Those speeches have left me speechless.
damn, great speech by Gary Oldman....RIP DB
Perfect, deep respect for David.
It's incredible an actor pays tribute to his famous artist who is David Bowie. I'm not a fan of Bowie but, I can imagine how shocked the music industry was because of his death.
hey gordan, gotham is under attack
Beautiful words
Beautiful! We miss you Mr Bowie... forever.
Marvelous tribute for a man words just simply cannot describe. David's legacy and spirit will live on forever. We'll see you soon, Ziggy. It's only forever-- not long at all.
+Dylan Melencion steven wilsons tribute at hammersmith appollo ,space oddity real good to
Oh gosh this is making me well up. This is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful man. May he forever be in our hearts, thank you and goodbye Starman.
I steady myself for the naysayers and haters:
But in my opinion, having known what I know from seeing past interviews and previous awards bestowed upon David Jones, that he saw himself as a artist, and always decried the term "ROCKSTAR", he hated awards and pomp and the cult of personality.
Of course something should have been done to mark his influence on people's lives, but imho, Mr Jones - who disappeared in ashes just hours later with no fuss - would have preferred we didn't troop out the tears and dramatics, albeit well intentioned, missing the point of his life/work by miles.
this is so touching
Tilda Swinton should have joined Gary Oldman to pay tribute to David Bowie
Miss David Bowie so much, his music always inspired, a great loss
gary and bowie were bros !!!!
Bowie didn't write Space Oddity in response to the moon landing. He wrote it as a prediction for what might happen. That's why Major Tom's fate is left unknown; so that the song would always be relevant.
There are only few men that I've cried for in my life. Actually I hardly cry. I did cry, but it was the cry of recognition and gratitude for everything David Bowie gave us.
I also cried during Lady Gaga's tribute at Grammys and I don't really get the hate or comparison she and Lorde and Gary Oldman and Annie Lennox get here. Can't you just accept that different people express their love/friendship/admiration/inspiration in different terms?
This is how a tribute is done! Not like the campy disgrace Lady Gaga did at the Grammy's this year. The Grammy's couldn't even honor him in life properly when they gave him the lifetime achievement award a few years back, simply mentioning him at a commercial break! Two missed opportunities, sadly.
Without doubt man he’s gonna live forever ♥️
Why did they cut the video post off here? Gary was about to announce the incredible musical tribute with the astonishing musicians that played throughout David's career........WTH? Regardless, excellent tribute from the Brits, Annie and Gary, in stark contrast to the shameful Grammy debacle that made NO MENTION whatsoever of David's passing or Iconic musical legacy, it was merely a deplorable corporate ad for Intel and The Grammys cashing in on increased viewership$$ from David's death. Now go see the musical performance that was cut our here, apparently it's on in full at Slate.com, see Bowiewonderworld, or Bowie's official site for links
Omg, I'm so touched with this! This is a REAL tribute to him.
+Gi Santos not as good as steven wilsons tribute at hammersmith appollo, on yt
I don't need no tribute. Know why? Cause I've got all of Bowie's magnificent discography a fingertip away. And who would possibly choose this over that? Bowie announced it way back in 1971: "I'm living on". You just have to press play.
